[mythtv-users] Selecting DVB audio pids in 0.17

2005-04-09 Thread Ola Nilsson
Hello,

I've googled up a couple of threads regarding the DVB audio pids in
Myth 0.17 (both on this list and on dev), but I'm still not able to do
what I want. This thread on the developer list seems related, but I
think my problem is more ordenary:

http://www.mail-archive.com/mythtv-dev@mythtv.org/msg04850.html

I use a Pinaccle ShowCenter to play some of my recoded shows, and that
does not handle the audio on the recordings I've made with myth
0.17. On myth 0.16, where it all worked, I used an audio pid that when
recorded, and idetified using Xine, presented itself as "MPEG 2 audio
layer 2". When I record with 0.17, the same information is "A/52
2.0". I think what I need to do to get around this is to select
another auido PID for my recordings.

So, do I need to edit the code as described in the thread above, or
can I somehow change the priorities amongst the audio pids so that
Myth again uses the "MPEG 2 audio layer 2" pid?

Hope this wasn't to unclear...

[mythtv-users] Video card importance for HD playback

2005-04-09 Thread Andy Alsup
I just put in my order for an Athlon64 3500+ Abit AV8 mobo w/ 1G pc3200.

The box is going to be a HD frontend/backend with 2 Air2pc cards, and
maybe firewire from Comcast.

In an effort to stay on budget, the rest of the hardware will come
from stuff lying around the house. Which leads to my question:

I have a Radeon 7000 (AGP 2x / 64 MB) that is not being used. I also
have a Radeon 9550 (AGP 8x / 128 MB) thats in my main workstation. Is
it worth the trouble of reconfiguring my workstation with the 7000 so
I can have the 9550 in the myth box?

>From what I've read, the display card isn't that important unless XvMC
is used, which I understand might be supported by the Radeon hardware,
but not supported by the available drivers. At any rate, I'm planning
on doing straight software HD decoding -- and I expect a 64/3500+
should do fine with that.

Does it make a difference which card I use? Should I get a different card?

My local cable company only offers one(!) HD unencrypted QAM channel.
(It's an NBC affiliate.) I have nearly maxed out signal strength using
my HD3000 with DVB drivers and no continuity errors that I can recall.
I can't say the same for my OTA 8VSB channels I tune with the Air2PC
card however.

I wonder, what signal strength does azap or the mythbackend.log report?

Help!

Trying to get wife's notebook working as a mythtv client. My notebook
works fine with the same configuration (different model), but her
display is funky:

http://thefinleys.com/mythtv.jpg

What you are seeing: Family Guy episode on left (connected to the
backend machine successfully), blue band, then desktop showing on the right.

Misc. system details:

XFree86 4.3
Debian Unstable
mythtv 0.17 (also happened w/0.16)
Graphics chipset is: i810

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Good job, I'll just add a note for those who don't know that minnie.tuhs.org
currently requires registration. When I was looking at their guide data last
year, I found it to be the equal of (at least) d1.com.au if not better.

Also you might add a pointer to http://www.icetv.com.au who are working on
MythTV support (ie, XMLTV grabber). (Melb/Syd FTA only)

I've never had problems with any of the Promise controllers under linux. Then
again, I do always compile my own kernels, and add in support for the promise
boards, if it's not already there. I'm not sure what FC has already compiled.

Yeah, I have this problem too. New 7174 NVidia drivers on a 5200, and
not on the CRT, just on the SVIDEO. Maybe we should log it as a bug.

I had to emerge -a xvattr to get xvattr. It's a pretty cool command
though. It tells you what Xv 'ports' (like feature layers e.g. overlay
etc) and features you have.

No. It's way too expensive; http://www.d1.com.au/hmc/HMC_orders.html
quotes $1799 AUD ($1389 USD) for a model with a single digital tuner
card and 80Gb disk. If you're willing to do it yourself you can buy the

I'm having similar problems outside of Philadelphia (north of
Pottstown), and I *AM* a digital subscriber VLC is reporting
continuity errors on data piped in from the test_dvr app in dvb-apps.
Things will be clear for maybe 30 seconds at a time, max, followed by
burst of MPEG artifacts. I think Comcast's streams in this area might be
hokie. That, or you have to be an HD subscriber for them to get it
right :)

Suggestions for a ATA/133 controller, was: [mythtv-users] Is xfs flaky or is it my drive. Fedora Core 2, XFS, Myth .16 and .17

2005-04-09 Thread Tom Dixon
The good news is I have solved the mystery of my flaky XFS. I went a got a
new drive, assuming the 200GB drive was failing. I read the book this
time.. Learned that if you don't have an ATA/133 controller, then anything
over 137 GB is too big, and when you access the space on the drive over
137GB unpredictable things happen mystery solved. Course it's never as
easy as you might think.

Went to Compusa, got a generic ATA/133 controller, Compusa Brand (they had
that and one other off brand). Its an 8212 controller. Put it in, boom,
nothing works. Round and Round, but the net is this is seems to be a not
linux friendly ATA/133 controller.

So - I ask the intelligent collective, what ATA/133 controllers you have
found to work out of the box with Fedora core 2 and 3 and/or any good driver
solutions to the 8212?

To Discussion about mythtv mythtv-users@mythtv.org

I have a myth box about 6 months old. Fedora Core 2, new 200GB drive myth
.16 and .17.

I have the 200GB drive in a volume group for expansion, and its setup XFS
for /video. I run ok for a few days, then I'm watching something and it
stops in the middle, check the logs and I'm getting XFS errors. Stop myth,
unmount, xfs_check.. problems get fixed and I run ok for a few days. Then
the problem reoccur.

So my questions to the great users of myth..

- Are people using XFS and finding it generally stable or flaky like I find
it?
- What are people using as the file system for /video and are you
happy/unhappy?
- Do I need to pull this thing apart and do a surface test on the drive?
- Could there be some things I need to check if you had similiar issues and
resolved them?

Thank you in advance!

You're right but I didn't notice this until last week -- when daylight

So it seems to get some settings from settings.pro. but just doesn't

[mythtv-users] Australian XMLTV grabbers

2005-04-09 Thread William Uther
Hi all,
I've just put up a web page describing the various Australian XMLTV
grabbers (that I know about) here:

http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~willu/xmltv/
Comments are welcome. The reason for this page is that I've just
finished a new grabber (WARNING: untested as yet). It is available
from that page.

The new grabber uses the Australian Community-based TV Guide data at
minnie.tuhs.org. More information is available at the page above.
Basically, this is hand-collected guide data put together by the
Australian TiVo community. I don't yet know how reliable this guide is
compared with d1, but if it hasn't been entered, you're encouraged to
fix that yourself :). This guide doesn't have the copyright issues
associated with the ninemsn grabber.

Cheers,
Will:-}

I can go in and out of xine, myth, HD recordings, standard-def recordings,
files with 2-channel stereo only, reboot, etc., etc., never have to touch a
thing on the sound config. :-)

> how different are asoundrc files for the Audigy and SBLive! Value 1024?

Not very, I believe. I've heard of at least on SBLive user using my
Audigy .asoundrc successfully. Really, the files aren't that different for
*any* sound card with similar features (i.e., digital output), you just need
to change a parameter or two here and there to match where certain things
are. I based all my stuff off Mike Dean's work, which you can read here:

http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/DigitalSoundHowTo

He goes over how to set up pretty much everything, and the .asoundrc file is
pretty well commented.

[mythtv-users] playback problems after cvs update

2005-04-09 Thread James Armstrong
I have been running cvs for some time now and just updated from end of
march to cvs as of April 8th. Now playback is not working well at all.
When I first start a show the total time of the recording is something
like 318:00:00, and if I pause it then unpause it shows 58:00, then it
keeps changing even though it has finished recording. The other problem
is fast forward does not work. It pauses playback for about 5 - 10
seconds then starts playing again, only skipping a few seconds. I have
gone back to cvs as of March 25th and it is still broke. Could it be a
backend thing? I haven't gone back that far on the backend yet.

You are not looking at directory permission problems, but permissions on the

Try this :

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

type this at the mysql> prompt.
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO [EMAIL PROTECTED] IDENTIFIED BY 'mythtv';
then :

Now try it :)

Yes, that's the often mouthed platitudes, but actual tests do
not indicate there is that much of a difference. Samba 3 can
hold its own with nfs.

Both are wire-speed limited, meaning ones choice of Nics and switches
can have a huge effect. However the underlying technology of either
is capable of exceeding your disk read speed, so what's the big
discussion about?

Re: [mythtv-users] Which Distro?

2005-04-09 Thread Howard Cokl
OK, ran a test the past couple of days between slack 9.1 and FC3 installed on
a combo frontend/backend; MSI K7N2GM-L w/Athlon 2700+, 512MB, using onboard
video and audio, 1 pvr250, 1 pchdtv3K. First the install and then the
performance:

Slackware: installation was trivial (I've installed slack alot of times) d/l
kernel and built everything from source including xorg (everything being
kernel 2.6.11.6, mythtv and dependencies, mplayer, etc)

FC3: installation was trivial, had to uninstall a few packages, probably my
fault since I don't use RPM based systems, followed Jarod's guide and only
really deviated as far as pcHDTV 3K and window manager (wm over KDE)

Winner is: slackware but that is just me, for a newb I think FC3 and Jarod's
guide would get them up and running easier than slack.

PERFORMANCE: This kills me (I'm not trying to pick a fight) I hate rpm based
systems but FC3 kicked slack's butt. All settings are the same, use opengl
vsync, no render accell, no xvmc, suid, etc.
slack watching livetv svideo from directv pvr250 mythfrontend 33% X 3%
watching hdtv is impossible except if you are extremely drunk and lose
consciencenous in time to the jerkiness
FC3 watching livetv svideo from directv pvr250 mythfrontend 15% X 3%
watching hdtv live (PBS HDTV dunno the format) mythfrontend 55% X 22%
mythbackend 3%

Winner is FC3 with at-rpms and Jarod's guide, well done guys

A little Googling led me to the sources for mythFM, and I started making a
stab at getting it compiled, if not working. The compile bombs out with
the following message...

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mythFM]$ make

Now, I've got qt-devel installed, and qdir is in...

./usr/lib/qt-3.3/include/qdir.h

...but the Makefile doesn't seem to be finding it. Anyone got any
experience with making mythTV modules? Can someone tell me where I'm going
awry here?

PS: Wouldn't it be great to have some sort of python interface to the
MythTV system. I'll admit to knowing nothing (yet) about the internals,
but it seems that for low requirements things like this, and the weather
pluging that's going to require recompilation everytime a web address
changes, it would be ideal.

The problem here isn't so much the samba/nfs decision as the wireless.
In my experience, nfs handles the packet loss you see in wireless
connections much more poorly than SMB does.

If you had a wired connection between then two machines, I'd say go for
NFS, but I think you'd see poor performance and strange lockup issues
with a wireless connection...

Well, srrryyy.

Encryption does not have to be cpu-heavy... it's usually
when it's combined with compression that you see any real
issues, and there's no point (attempting) compression on
video streams.

WEP is not secure, in spite of its name.

I'm not up on WPA, so I'll take your word on it.

But no, I wasn't saying cfs is a better performer than
samba, just that if you're going to go to nfs over wireless
and you pgp-sign your e-mail...

At the moment (In 0.17), XvMC is broken. We're doing some work (and
testing) on the dev list to get it back stable again, but for now it's
unstable and likely to crash the frontend

For the record... it is now working, by commenting out the "RenderAccel".
It was an Nvidia MX4000 running at AGP 2X.

XvMc DOES work now, but it isn't completely stable. In sections where
there were a lot of pixels changing, it would jitter. I'll try it
again once .18 comes out... but its possible its also a hardware
limitation I have right now.

Re: [mythtv-users] Question about multiple tuner cards

2005-04-09 Thread Bruce Markey
J wrote:
Ok,
In order to record multiple programs at once, do you need a separate
cable/sat box for each tuner card? Or will one suffice?
Joe is correct that if the box only outputs one signal, you can
only record one thing from the box at a time. However, many
digital cable services offer the analog channels over the coax
cable. Also some cable boxes have a VCR "bypass" coax output
where the box is sort of a splitter for it self and passes
along the analog feed to another tuner device while the box is
in use.
A common configuration is that people often have one digital
cable box and two (or more) tuner cards. The digital cable box
s-video is connected to an s-video on one card and analog coax
is connected to the tuner input on the same card and all others.
This way, with two cards you can record one digital and one analog
at the same time or two analog at the same time. Myth knows that
it can only use one input per card at a time and the scheduler
will figure out the best thing to do to record your shows.

Not quite a mute point, the patent would still need to be over turned.
Last I heard the average cost to over turn a patent was somewhere

Perhaps cfs? It's encrypted nfs, and security is a concern
if on wireless even more than wired because it does not

The fact that you pgp-sign would seem to indicate you are

[mythtv-users] PVR-350 unable to tune any channel...

2005-04-09 Thread Christian Borchmann
Hallo,
i am working for some days now to get my PVR-350 working on my Debian
"Sarge" box. I managed to use TV-Out with cat somevideo.mpg >
/dev/video16 and to watch pictures from my digital camera via S-Video input.

When i try to tune chanels i only get grey/black noise on screen. I am
in Berlin, Germany an have analog cable tv.

Can someone post his configuration, modprobe.conf ect. because i am

Maybe the problem is to set the right tuner (Type 38 i think) and input

Yes, ATrpms ivtv, rev.3.2q, IIRC.
Tried the alias line above, it didn't seem to work, so I gave the box
a reboot. I've seen some posts stating that PVR 500s need a reboot
after some changes in order for them to take effect. That's exactly
what it needed, both tuners on the 500 (/dev/video2 & 3) now work
great, video and sound.

However, my PVR 250 on /dev/video1 has lost it's audio. The 250 on
/dev/video0 still works great. So, I'm going to troubleshoot that
before adding the 500 to my Myth setup. I think I'll remove the tuner
line and reload the ivtv module, reboot if necessary, just to be sure
that something else is not clobbering my audio.

I was hoping not to have to join another list, I have enough trouble
keeping up with this one, even in gmail. However, I will if necessary.
I've been searching the archives of that list looking for a solution.

How do you go about detecting a signal? I had a tough time with my

while and look for oddities. It seems to work but feels like a hack.

About the subject line, I was thinking about submitting a patch to add
a "post-record" script to each input similar to the channel change
script. For me it would be to shut off the settop box after recordings
but it would also work for moving back to a neutral channel. I've been
busy lately so it's fallen to the bottom of the todo list.

For the benefit of others, I'll post here:

Essentially, while build quality is a small factor, you'll find that
the chipset design is mainly responsible for the quality of a card.
This means that all bt8x8's are uniformly mediocre -- the cx88's are
better.

The point is; buy the cheapest "WATCH TV ON YOUR PC1" card you can
find at a store with a good return policy -- chances are it is
probably a bt8x8.

Only thing to watch for is that the cheap ones only have mono tuners
-- if you are recording off of analog cable directly through the tuner
you'll want one with stereo. It makes no difference for composite-in,
because audio goes through the soundcard.

Yes you would need *either* an analog card or an MPEG encoder card. I'm
using a WinTV Go (BT878 chipset) with its composite input and its okay,

the recordings take a lot of space.

If you were starting out, I'd suggest getting a PVR-150 MCE.

Hi David,

I have an AthlonXP 1500 with 1 PVR250 and 1 PVR350, without any hard
disks at all, connected by a 100base switch to the main server.

I haven't had any problems caused by running out of network bandwidth -
even with both PVR's recording a program, and running a mythtranscode.
That is 2 x 4mbit/sec for the recordings, plus 1 x 4mbit/sec and 1 x
1mbit/sec for the transcode.

I am using NFS v3, over tcp, with tweaked network buffers (see the NFS
howto for performance tuning onfo), with a recent 2.6 kernel.

Considering the maximum bit rate from a 350 is ~ 12mbit/sec, and
doubling that for overhead - for a single PVR350 you would only be using
approx 75% of the theoretical maximum of a 100base switched network.

Another data point is that I have fairly successfully run a myth live-tv
3mbit/sec stream over an 802.11b network (about 5mbit/sec max in my
setup), albeit at a reduced resolution than my wired network.

HTH,

Mark

[mythtv-users] Re: Mythtv 0.17 on EPIA triying to output to /dev/nvidia0

2005-04-09 Thread Jonathan Thorpe
Hi Ivor,
Great to see your participation on the MythTV lists, I remember the
anticipation on the VIA Arena forum when you first developed the
reverse-engineered ddmpeg software - excellent work! :-) Up until recently,
my PVR was working great with the old ddmpeg library, but I decided to
upgrade my EPIA-M PVR and try the VIA XvMC software.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with Gentoo, kernel
2.6.10-gentoo-r8 and a configuration almost identical to Mark's. All other
programs I have which use the VIA XVMC work fine (mp2player, and Xine) and
my installation of MythTV is clean.

Just to confirm, is it normal for MythTV to attempt to use /dev/nvidia0
despite not being built with any form of explicit nVidia support?

I'll rebuild my MythTV shortly with the debug options - hopefully we can
find a resolve.

Regards,
Jonathan Thorpe

Nope, it was a init-scripts update from Fedora that killed it. After
reapplying the rc.sysinit patch manually it's all working dandy again.

Thanks though,

I believe this is something that is overcome by a properly tweaked
out .asoundrc. I never have to flip any switches, and everything under the
sun plays perfectly out the coax digital output on my Audigy to a Yamaha amp,
using the .asoundrc on my page.

That would be my first guess.

That's true for versions 0.3.2i(ish) and earlier compiled from source. Later
versions put them in /lib/modules//ivtv/.

Since he said he's using my doc, chances are he's using ivtv from ATrpms, in
which case a simple addition to modules.conf may fix the issue:

alias tuner tuner-ivtv

That, or installing v4l snapshot kernel modules, since I sent the tuner and
tveeprom patches for the PVR-500 upstream as well.

But definitely take this to the ivtv list with the tac output, its often
fairly obvious from your log output what's going on. (Though another 500 user
is having some issues that I can't see an explanation for in his logs)...

[mythtv-users] Re: edit cutlist on OS X

2005-04-09 Thread Todd Quessenberry
I haven't been able to get edit mode to work on my frontend either to be
able to edit cutlists. I was hoping it was an issue with 0.17 and
upgraded to cvs, but that didn't make any difference. If I run from the
command line and turn verbose messages on, it never says anything funny,
just consumes 50% cpu and never responds again. Does this work for
anyone? Is it a feature that just isn't available on the Mac frontend?
Or is something just bunched on my machine?

If someone was to make this sort of change I'd like to see the ability
to run my channel change script when entering LiveTV, why?

Sometime my satellite box might go into standby, or be set to standby
by me (I also have to switch my box to standby to get the firmware
upgraded), my channel change script checks to see if a signal is being
received and if not send the power on signal.

This is not a problem when a scheduled recording activates as that
always seems to execute the change channel script, just a problem when
switching to LiveTV
