Re: [mythtv-users] Automatic shutdown not working

2005-06-12 Thread Fredrik Karlsson
Hi,

I posted on this subject yesterday. The problem for me was that there
was no shudown script defined and I had not put 'exit 0' on that line.
Apparently, there is no check in the code that checks whether there
is a script name or not.

Not without hacking the LiveTV code probably. It's certainly not a
user-configurable option I've seen. For quick browsing of TV it can be
annoying - but for that I use the program guide instead which avoids
the delays!

Set the *global* start early/finish late options to what you want
(this then applies to all recording schedules). Then, for each
individual recording, these settings will be used and don't need to be
specified on each schedule.

If two shows run back to back, you should still be able to record both
as MythTV will realise the global overlap will conflict (it only
applies it if it can safely). The global overlap is more 'intelligent'
than per-schedule settings, which will stop shows recording altogether
if no more tuners are available for the subsequent recording.

The PVR-350 card records and ouputs stereo analog audio. TV recorded
via either the tuner or the S-Video input on this card will also only
have analog sound (may contain Dolby Surround, but not DD5.1). I'm
99.9% sure that digital cable/satellite/terrestrial is required to
receive DD5.1, as the digital sound is transmitted as a DD5.1 stream
within the program/transport streams received (and video as MPEG2).

If you are not going to be using HDTV or DVB which has channels
broadcasting DD5.1 audio, you are not missing out. It is possible
though to connect your soundcard's SPDIF output to a DD receiver for
those times you wish use xine/mplayer to play DVDs, and the system
will also usefully convert the analog audio received from the output
of the PVR-350's decoder and send it out the SPDIF too, so you need
only 1 audio connection to the receiver..

[mythtv-users] Consecutive shows on same channel

2005-06-12 Thread Matthew Carle

I have a number of shows that are scheduled to record after
another on the same channel. The problem is that they have overlap due to
starting early and finishing late. MythTV doesn’t seem to be able to
record more than one item at a time from a single tuner.

Does anyone know of a way to avoid this problem apart from
cancelling the schedule and creating a new entry that spans both shows (which
is a pain)?

Thanks in advance,

Matthew.

Haven't tried this, but perhaps assigning an invalid source ID to the
channel(s) may stop MythTV trying to use it (after reducing its
priority to the lowest setting).

I'd suggest 'active', 'broadcasting_starts' and 'broadcasting_ends'
flags for the channels table would be ever so useful in this regard,
as it would mean particular channels can be dropped out of the lineup
on an ad-hoc basis, and channels which do not broadcast 24hrs can be
catered for by the scheduler.

Both sources and channels can have their priorities set, so it should
be possible to reduce the priority of the HD channel(s) to below those
of the SD channel(s) whilst keeping the HD source at a higher priority
overall until the work is finished. I don't know the exact logic
behind the scheduler, so am not sure if making sure the HD version of
the channel has a lower priority than its SD version is enough to
force recording of the SD channel. If the SD tuner is busy at this
time though, obviously the recording will fail.

It may be considered that using a direct cable connection is a
'cleaner' solution, but in my experience with a UK cable box (that
doesn't support serial connection), I don't have any issues using a
serial IR blaster device to control the box. The blaster was $12 from
irblaster.info and works a treat.

The only possible issues are:

i) if using direct connection, make sure the cable is completely
suitable for the machine, or you could irreparably damage it, and
ii) if using a serial IR blaster, you need a suitable config file for
the transmitter. It's likely one will already exist but if it doesn't,
you'll need to create one (normally by recording the box's remote
control using an IR receiver) and then use the channel-change script.

Either solution will work if you have the correct kit - I've had
absolutely no issues with my channel changing using the blaster. I
recently soldered the transmitter and receiver onto a single serial
connector which has meant I can use remotes other than the Hauppauge
that came with the capture card.

Is it being interrupted by any jobs? There was a post yesterday with
almost the same symptoms - seemd to jobs queue was interrupting every
time it looked as through the backend was about to become idle, which
then stopped the machine shutting down.

then use 5.1-channel output.

I put it in my .asoundrc, configured xine and... it works! :-)
It seems you were also right with channel numbering (6 and 7, not 7 and 8 )

Wow. That doesn't happen often. :)

You may like it better at 0.5/0.5, but I was afraid that
would completely wash out the position information

No, maybe 0.1/0.9 but my friends didn't even want to try... :-)

Sounds interesting...

It's also possible to copy only the rear channels at 75% volume instead
of 100% (i.e. replace the 1 with 0.75).

I want to try this next... however you first solution just sounded
_much better_ than before. Louder volume, better effects, even
dialogues were understandable.

Think, the speakers were carefully positioned in the room
in a 7.1 arrangement, and this arrangement does not correspond

to the position information recorded in a 5.1 movie.

Please let me know how (if :) this works for you and what you think of
the different configs compared to the untouched 5.1 output and the
hardware-upmixed output you describe below.

See above... also, seemed me even better than the hardware upmix
(I'm referring to the amplifier upmix and not the soundcard CMSS,
not available under Linux) but we didn't do direct test on this.

I'll do next time... :-)

Now you have me wondering how Creative implemented the amp's hardware
upmix... I really assumed they'd be computing the values, but maybe
they assumed that since you have the sound card it wasn't worth the
extra expense to put the electronics in the amp, too.

Thanks for reporting back. Since I couldn't test it myself, I was
really interested in hearing how it works (and how close I was :). I
have to admit that I'm surprised it's better than the 5.1 untouched--I
thought the speakers that were used for 5.1 were close enough to their
"5.1 positions," but it sounds like the difference is big enough to
degrade the quality.

Now I'm wondering what would happen if you used the rear channels to all
4 back speakers but reduced the volumes on them (to maybe 0.5 or 0.75)...

Anyway, enjoy.

[mythtv-users] Temporarily disable a channel [aka, ABC15_1-HD off-air in PHX]

2005-06-12 Thread Blammo
Thanks to HD work taking place on the PHX market over the next few
weeks on the ABC channel, their HD OTA is offair. However, Myth tries
to record it anyway, and I end up with empty recordings.

What I'd LIKE to have happen, is for the recording to fail, and fail
over to the non-HD tuners I have. So here's the question:

How do I make a channel temporarily unavailable for scheduled
recordings, without having to delete it completely from the database?
I have a pile of things that are tied to that channel so I'd rather
not kill it completely.

As a note, unmarking "visible" only removes it from the channel list,
but "scheduled recordings" still shows the tuner in use.

2nd note: For most recordings, I already have (2) entries, one with a
-10 priority on a NON-HD Tuner, and one with a 10 priority on an HD
tuner. Because the HD tuner tries, it never "fails over" to the other
entry.

Any ideas??

(I'm including the article for others who might be in the PHX area,
and have been pulling their hair out, like I have been, as to why ABC
has been so "flakey" lately.)

ABC15 to upgrade the Digital / High Definition Broadcast Signal

Friday June 10, 2005:

ABC15, the leader in High Definition programming, is pleased to
announce a significant upgrade in the "over the air" Digital / High
Definition services in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

These installations will double the digital / high definition signal
output power while creating a dual backup system to significantly
avoid outages. The DTV / HD broadcast transmitter installation will be
begin Friday, June 10, 2005 and will last over the next few weeks.
Unfortunately, during this installation period the DTV / High
Definition signal will not unavailable. Due to the nature of this
installation the exact return date also is unavailable; however ABC15
has put full resources behind this effort to complete the upgrades as
quickly as possible.

In order to make these major state of the art upgrades, ABC15 must
remove most of the existing transmission path, add new components to
the current system and then complete a reinstallation of all the
equipment. Before the system can return to the air, it must also
receive proof of performance testing and meet Federal guidelines.
This overall process is expected to take several weeks.

ABC15 realizes this will cause DT / HD outages during some of the ABC
television network NBA Finals coverage. We apologize in advance for
the outage during such an important sporting event, as we are required
to complete the installation at this time.

ABC15 is committed to providing the highest quality digital / high
definition signal available to Arizona's television viewers. Again,
we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to
restoring the digital / HD service as soon as possible.

digital cable required to receive 5.1? I have seen the how-to on
getting the S/PDIF working on the sound card, but there seems to be some
indication that with the 350 out/sound card in it wouldn't truly be
digital audio. Thanks.

When you only have S-Video plugged in, is the machine actually
hanging, or is there just no output on the TV? Depending on X, it may
be looking for a VGA monitor to be present to successfully launch the
X server. If this is the case, it is usually possible to edit the
xorg.conf file to tell X that you are using on S-Video output.
Alternatively, if you are using a clone mode, then it is likely it
will try and detect the presence of the VGA card first (which may
explain why it works and you get cloned displays with both VGA and
S-Video connected)

On my Pundit-R (ATI based) machine, I use only S-Video output
connected to the TV. I changed the BIOS to reflect this, and also
edited my xorg.conf file to tell it I am using only display via
S-Video.

[mythtv-users] Connecting Myth box to cable box - 8-pin/9-pin serial vs. LIRC

2005-06-12 Thread Steve Pugh

Hello all,

After ordering components in November of last year and going through a
cycle of alternating short bursts of frustration and long bouts of
non-activity, I am the proud papa of a Myth system (dual 2.4GHz
backend/frontend, one PVR-250 and one PVR-350 for input and TV out,
Pioneer DVD-R). Have been playing music and videos for about a week,
and once I installed the latest 0.3.6g drivers for ivtv and fixed my
system clock (I was an infuriating five minutes off, which made every
recorded show a cliffhanger for me ;-) I have been watching live
television and recorded programs with glee.

Another week or so of testing and hacking on the 'black screen when
exiting Program Guide' bug, and I might even disconnect my lovely wife's
ReplayTV and pronounce Myth the ruler of the household's media domain.

Enough of that, on to the question. So far, I've been sticking to the
bare cable input for the Myth. Looks great, but it's limited to
channels 1-99. I would rather use it to control the cable settop box,
which means either LIRC or finding a suitable 9-pin to 8-pin serial cable.

Does the collective group of Those Who Have Gone Before Me have a
preference? Seems that direct control via serial would be more
reliable, and I've seen cables online for $10-15. Is there a specific
pinout I need to worry about for a Pioneer V1100 box, or will this
off-the-shelf cable do the trick? Or, if there is a standard pinout,
I'm not afraid of a little solder, as long as I'm just attaching
cables. What are your thoughts?

Many thanks and best regards,
   Steve

[mythtv-users] Status Request: XvMC OSD Flicker

2005-06-12 Thread John Freer
Hey All:

I'm running an MX440 card with the 7174 drivers. I'm really happy
with the XvMC performance with the exception of the jerkyness /
flickering that happens when any OSD stuff is on the screen.

I'm just curious if the problem has been identified and if anyone is
considering working on it.

I remember a post where DTK said that there was an issue with the
number of available buffers, but I'm not sure that's on point.

XvMC makes a huge difference for me in watching 1080i content. I can
watch on my XP2600 with 50% free, compared to 0-5% free with no XvMC.

Thanks,

[mythtv-users] Automatic shutdown not working

I have setup automatic shutdown to perform the command "sudo /sbin/halt

correct. Nothing appears in syslog either. Any ideas?

Re: [mythtv-users] import DVD using Debian unstable packages?

2005-06-12 Thread Taylor Ralph
The mythdvd package I created was for the 0.18.0
sources. I wouldn't think 0.18.1 would have any
issues. One thing to check for is if you have the
'transcode' package installed. Or maybe there is a
problem building 0.18.0 mythplugins sources against
0.18.1 mythtv packages.

On a side note to Matt. I see you have 0.18.1
mythplugin binaries built, but there are no sources
available yet. Could you please upload so we can look
into this issue? Thanks for all the hard work on these
packages!

Re: [mythtv-users] edit custom record rules

Hello,

The SQL string is stored in the description field of the record
rule and is shown on the options page when it does not refer to
a specific showing. This happens on the priorities page. Go to
"Recording Priorities", highlight the title and press SELECT (Enter
or Space) or "I"NFO. You will see the rule but it may be truncated
if it is several lines long. The surefire way to see all your power
search rules is;

$ mysql -u mythtv -pmythtv mythconverg
mysql> select title,description from record where search=1\G

To delete a rule, simply go to the recording options page and change
the record type option to "Do not record this program". This will
remove the rule from anywhere you can get to the options page not
just the priorities page.

I'd originally planned to allow editing existing rules but never
got around to it. The few times I've needed to make a change I've
removed the current rule and created a new version but I agree that
this is more work than necessary. Maybe there should be a way to

bring up the custom page with a current rule pre-loaded. I'll look
into it.

it scrolls very very slow. You can actually see it count up the

I thought I broke something, so I reinstalled the OS, drivers, and
mythtv, but the problem persists. I've attached the console output
from mythfrontend while doing the following:

- start mythfrontend

Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+
VIA KT266a mobo

mythtv-0.18

I'm not positive about what is indicated by the log records, but I've
seen these symptoms (slow seek, timer "countup" when doing so) when my
commflag markup table was messed up.

Least invasively, try:

% mythcommflag --rebuild

Then try watching something and seeking around. If that doesn't work,
you could try repairing your database (read the whole thing and note
the notes about backing up your database, shutting down mysql, etc.):

Then restart mysql and run mythcommflag as above.

Yes, it is. My friends were there when I was testing
so I have multiple opinions on that... they all had
no hesitation in stating the first solution was sounding
better. The effects are more clear in the first case,
transitions are sharper. In the second case when there
is some sound moving in the room, it's blended, blurred,
how to say, not so clear and sharply posizioned in space.

No, maybe 0.1/0.9 but my friends didn't even want to try... :-)

I want to try this next... however you first solution just sounded
_much better_ than before. Louder volume, better effects, even
dialogues were understandable.

Think, the speakers were carefully positioned in the room
in a 7.1 arrangement, and this arrangement does not correspond
to the position information recorded in a 5.1 movie.

See above... also, seemed me even better than the hardware upmix
(I'm referring to the amplifier upmix and not the soundcard CMSS,
not available under Linux) but we didn't do direct test on this.

I'll do next time... :-)

You could do it from the SQL command line if using the mythconverg database:

DELETE from `videometadata`;

Alternatively, you could use something like phpMyAdmin (which I really
recommend for editing the Myth DB easily) and then just delete those

I have a ECS motherboard working with nvram-wakeup, although not the model you
have.

I remember that ECS motherboards have the same parameters for nvram as the
Chaintech motherboards (mine was recognised as a Chaintech). See if there's a
corresponding Chaintech mobo with the same chipset, it may work.

What makes you think that it needs to be changed? My mythweb is
working fine, and my conf.php looks exactly as you describe above.

What problem are you trying to solve?

The above line says:

Define the constant 'server_domain' as the value of
$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] if it exists, otherwise use
$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'].

It is used to form the domain for which cookies should be set, unless
you're proxying or otherwise using voodoo, you shouldn't need to
change it.
You could also just set it to the hostname you use to access your mythweb, eg:

define('server_domain', 'mythweb.yourhost.com');

When you go to the video-management menu you'll be asked if you want to
keep the entries in the database or delete them (in v 0.18-1 at least)
So that's how you can delete the entries, deleting files directly from

[mythtv-users] mythweb conf.php example, please

2005-06-12 Thread Mercury Morris
Here is a line from the mythweb package's file, conf.php:

define('server_domain', $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] ?
$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] : $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']);

The above is supposed to be all on one line, it's folded on my screen as I
compose this message.

Would anyone who has actually changed this line successfully, please
post their version of this line? Even better, perhaps one of the authors
and/or contributors of mythweb would care to provide a filled-out example
of either this single line of the entire conf.php file.

I have searched the archives and found requests for this same information,
as recently as March 2005. But none of the responses includes actual
examples. The line above is so, so confusing. I know it's not the
'server_domain' string that gets changed, so it must be one or more of the
other strings. Please. Would anyone who knows which strings to change
kindly show us a real-world example.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Playing the list is easy: you go into "select music" or press "3" from
playing music screen, select whatever you want from the tree view,
back out of the tree view and your selection will replace whatever you
had before. You can also save the playlist: from the same screen where
you can select "all music" and "cd", you can also edit "active queue",
bringing up the info popup ("i" key) lets you name and save playlist
(You name it first, then click down and save it).

>
> What I want to do is simple:

> Or browse by genre then album directly.

First, you need to define a sort order for play list (in setup of the
frontend, go to setup->music->general). There you can tell it to use
ID3 tags or ignore tags and parse filenames (which must match a
specified pattern then), and the sort order which applies to
playlists. So you can enter "artist album title track" in the sort
order (I found out that if you don't enter "track" it actually sorts
by both track and title at once and does it wrong).

As you go down the tree in "select music", you can select everything
below your current tree view, for example, if you sort by artist album
title, you can select entire album. Then in "play music" screen you
can select "shuffle" and specify random order.

For home networks, just mount partitions. For streaming, you need to
look at mythstream, if you set up a server you can stream to it
yourself.

Hi Paul et al,

I'm still stuck and would be grateful for any suggestiongs.

First, I picked up a new video card and processor.
Video Card: Nvidia FX5200
Processor: P4 3.06Mhz 533FSB

Regarding your checklist, here's what I've done so far.

> a) Right drivers for card with your kernel

Presently, I've got nvidia drivers version 7174. I tried the 7664
drivers first, but XvMC didn't seem to work, so I went back to my 7174
drivers after reading more posts on the list that said 7664 didn't
have a great XvMC track record. However, I still couldn't get any
XvMC stuff to work on 7174 under Myth (thought it does work with
mplayer).

> b) Proper AGP bus speed and AGP interface driver in use

I'm using agpart and I in /proc/drivers/nvidia/agp/status I see

Status : Enabled
Driver : AGPART
AGP Rate : 4x
Fast Writes : Enabled
SBA : Disabled

If I enable SBA, I get no video and can't get back to console when I start X.

> c) Proper user of openGL sync for retrace

I recompiled with --enable-opengl-vsync, but I've still got
Video Timing method: RTC

Where do I change that?

> d) Proper settings for deinterlace and, if used, xvmc

I'm not even attempting deinterlaced playback yet.
As I mentioned, if I enable XvMC in myth, it segfaults when I try to
play back a capture.

> e) Proper sound settings and handling of 5.1 sound and multiple streams

I'm using ALSA:default and I'm getting sound. I don't know what else
to check here.

> f) Real time scheduling of playback thread

When I run it sudo'd I get "Using Realtime Priority" but that has no
effect on my playback issues.

> g) Making sure disk or network speed is adequate

I'm working off a local disk.
hdparm tells me that I've got 51 MB/sec on buffered disk reads.

> h) Nothing else sucking up CPU on the machine

I'm not running anything else that is CPU intensive.

I'm now scoring like 3600 on glxgears.

Playback of my 1080i test stream is still impossible and I'm seeing

That are the correct commands as far as I know. Only one last possibility

Ok. yes the commands seems to be correct. When looking at the
diseqc.conf from vdr and reading about the Diseqc 1.o commands the
commands sent by my myth box seems to be correct. Hmm. You have a point
about the frequencies and a possible mixup. I have to investigate so
that the frequencies is correctly associated with the right LNB and
satellite.

Maybe it also could be that Myth does not send the right frequency, 22
khz, for selecting LNB. I'm under the impression that this freq. can be
22 khz,33 khz,44 khz depending on which country you are in. Where do I

Paul,
Thanks. So I'll order a StreamZap this evening and try it out next
week when it arrives. I've not found anywhere to purchase it locally
in San Jose although I'm sure someone must sell them. Guess I'll go
Amazon for now.

So there's a difference between an 'IrDA dongle' and an 'IR
receiver'? I know absolutely nothing of this technology.

Yes, there's a big difference. IrDA is a data communications protocol
that uses infrared. The IR receivers being talked about here are for
CIR (short for consumer infrared), which is a catchall term for the
sort of IR used by remote controls. It's just happens that a few IrDA
transceivers can be coaxed into handling CIR as well (the Actisys
IR-200L, for example.) I don't think any of the USB ones are capable
of this. The Actisys I mentioned is a serial model, and I don't
really recommend it; the range is pretty lousy.

Here's what I'm wondering: I've got a Hauppauge PVR-250, which came
with an IR receiver and remote. However, then I decided to stick the
tuner in the backend (different room) and have a play-only frontend
based on an EPIA motherboard. That means using the PVR-250 remote is
a bit of a problem, but I hate for it to go to waste and buy another
remote.

The EPIA has a CIR header on the board. Is it possible to somehow
wire the Hauppauge IR receiver to this block and use it without having
the PVR-250 in that box?

I've googled a bit to try to figure this out, but haven't found
anything.

Could this be why I can't get any streams to work? Everything else
seems to be working just fine and this is the 1st time I've seen any
mplayer errors.

That would definitely cause problems. MythStream simply passes the URL
off to MPlayer and MPlayer does the work. MythStream is an interface
for managing stream lists. So, once you fix MPlayer, it should work.

My system acts the same however if you allow it to set there for a minute or
two the next screen comes up. Its doing alot of mysql requests in the
background. You do have mysql running don't you? Another thing to try would
be to back up your database, drop the table and recreate from the template
that comes with the release.

You're mistaken. The HD3000 with the V4L driver can tune regular
cable and, with the DVB drivers, can tune QAM (digital cable) where
you'll find some number of HD channels. I myself, and many others,
are doing this right now. I get roughly 8 HD channels. What's more,
my rig had multiple tuner cards so I can record several simultaneous
shows (which tivo cannot). And, finally, commercial skip, though
seemingly trivial, is very very nice (and not available on tivo).

Thanks, that's what I had, but it wouldn't do what I wanted. I resetup
the slave to use the same directory (nfs-shared from the master backend)
for the recordings and now it works, I'll recheck if it will still work
with the recording directory set to seperate directories.

Sure, just go into the backend setup program on your master and turn
OFF the setting that allows the master to run commflagging jobs. Then
all commflagging jobs will run on your slave. The setting is called
"Allow Commercial Detection jobs" and there are equivalent settings for
the User Jobs as well. Make sure that you have the "Run Jobs

the recordings that recorded on your master would never get flagged.

[mythtv-users] confused by MythMusic - alternatives?

2005-06-12 Thread Hamish Moffatt
Hi,

I'm confused by the MythMusic interface. By default it seems to list
every track I have in one big list, and starts playing the very first
each time. Going into the play list editors allows to me to browse
artists but then you have to select individual tracks; then I'm not sure
how to actually PLAY the list. I don't think my remote mapping is very
suitable.

What I want to do is simple:
Browse by genre, then artist, then album. Then play a whole album.
Or browse by genre then album directly.

I don't need to queue up multiple albums but it would be useful.
I don't want to select each track individually.

It would be nice to play random albums, or random with a genre.

Is there a way to do these tasks easily, at least selecting a whole
album to play? I'd also consider alternatives to MythMusic that integrate
with LIRC.

It would be useful also to either

1. access the music collection remotely via UPnP (though I'm
   happy to mount via NFS or CIFS/Samba);

2. select tracks on a remote computer and have them streamed to
the Myth PC - like "remote speakers" in iTunes-speak.
However this isn't my preferred option as the machine
acting as remote speakers couldn't pause the stream,
   skip tracks etc.

Most of my collection is OGG Vorbis, otherwise MP3. No AAC,
some FLAC.

I'd even consider other hardware, though that seems wasteful with
MythTV right there.

Suggestions? Or tutorials on how to make MythMusic make sense to me?

Thanks,
Hamish

[mythtv-users] MPEG-2 vs. MPEG-4 in .nuv file

2005-06-12 Thread Greg Woods
This time I am quite certain that I did what I thought would disable
automatic transcoding, but I still get the same result. What I did was
to go in to

Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> TV Settings -> Recordings -> Software
Encodings (V4L-based) -> Default

and uncheck the "Automatically transcode after recording" box. If I go
into "Transcoders" instead of "Software Encodings", there doesn't appear
to be any "Automatically transcode" box to check.

After unchecking the box, I scheduled and made another recording, and
tried both mplex methods on it, with the same results: the m2v file
comes out looking like MPEG-4 and mplex won't read it.

Is there something else I need to do to disable automatic transcoding?
Is there anything I can do once I have the .nuv file to determine
whether or not it is in the proper form? "file" just shows .nuv files as
"data".

I'm sure this has to be something I can set in the configuration, but
the number of twisty little passages through the setup menus is a bit
overwhelming to me and I understand very little of what they all do.

[mythtv-users] Trouble booting a system with S-video plugged in

2005-06-12 Thread Larry Taub
I put together a second machine to be a frontend only system playing my
recordings to a second tv. I had a red hat 9.2 installation on the
machine originally that I upgraded to FC3 and then followed Jarod's
howto document. I got pretty much everything working but there is an
odd problem that might be really simple for somebody to pick out.

When I boot with S-Video plugged in, the BIOS shows up fine and the tv
displays that the grub bootloader stage 2 is beginning and then it
never continues. If I plug in a VGA monitor or nothing, it boots fine
and when it gets to the X login screen, I can hook in my S-Video cable
and see everything just fine and it works fine on the tv after this
point.

Obviously, I don't intend on rebooting this machine often but it would
be nice to figure out what is causing this problem and perhaps fix it
especially since my backend/frontend machine boots fine with just the
S-Video cable (on the same TV and S-Video cable right now).

The specs are: K7S5A Pro with SDRAM, Athlon 800, Nvidia GF4 MX420 (pull from a Dell, possibly XFX brand), SB Live Value,

I believe you have a choice of running (a) a full-fledged backend and
configure it as a slave (I don't know the details), or (b)
"mythjobqueue" on the slave (essentially a stripped-down executable
that just polls the database looking for
commflagging/transcoding/userjob work).

I don't think the bitrate numbers for ABC and ABC2 are correct there.
It's claiming 15Mbit/sec each for those two, plus another 8.5Mbit/sec
for ABC HD. However total DVB-T bandwidth in our 7MHz channels is only
19-23Mbit/sec (depending on the FEC parameters).

I think the HD number might be correct but the others wrong.
Try using dvbsnoop to get bandwidth data for each.

Also the SDTV streams often have both MPEG and AC3 audio streams, while
the HD streams have AC3 only.

If you have digital cable and are trying to get HD into myth, look
into using firewire. I believe at the moment that's the only way to do
it, since video capture can't get the kind of resolution HD puts out.

[mythtv-users] HDTV cards w/o antenna

2005-06-12 Thread David Fitzgerald
I'm researching making my own MythTV box, and my primary motivation is
because TiVo doesn't currently support HDTV. In looking at the HDTV
cards that are supported, I find two, but am a tad confused by
something I read concerning their specifications. I also looked at
some of the recent archives and came up empty.

The HD-3000 specs or FAQs claim that you need to have an antenna and
that it is incompatible with a cable company's HDTV feed (I use RCN,
or Comcast is also available to me). Depending upon how you read it,
it may be talking about the older HD-2000 or maybe both the HD-2000
and the HD-3000. I'm not sure if it is a typo or a "feature".

The other option, the Air2PC card, claims to optimally "receive 8VSB
(ATSC) digital broadcast signals", and appears to have only an RF
interface. Is this two different ways of saying that you simply
cannot capture any HTDV signal on either of these two cards w/o having
an antenna?

If so, I'm extremely underwhelmed. The last thing I want to do is
deal with an antenna on a MythTV box. I'm hoping I'm mistaken.

[mythtv-users] Run Mythcommflag on slave?

2005-06-12 Thread Torsten Schenkel
Hi there,

my master backend/frontend combo is running on a small epia machine.
Therefore commflagging takes quite long and uses valuable cpu cycles.

My workstation is running a slave backend, which would be much faster
and less critical with cpu cycle usage.

Is there a possibility to get the slave do the commfalgging or
transcoding? Recording will be done mostly on the master.

To be honest, I'm not at all sure what format the pcHDTV-3000 captures
in; I am still learning the lower-level technical stuff. I did have
automatic transcoding turned on, because without it, a single 3+ hour
City Council meeting took up half of my 70GB /video partition.
Transcoding took this down to about 8GB. I was pretty sure I had already
tried doing a recording with automatic transcoding turned off though,
but I'm going to try it again to be certain. Is there any way to examine
a .nuv file and tell if it's already been transcoded or not?

I'll try these things. In the meantime I tried the mplayer command and
got an error:

mplayer: symbol lookup error:

Could this be why I can't get any streams to work? Everything else

Well, all of the above - plus the fact that I don't have cx88-atsc on
my stsrem -
just goes to show that there are many way to get the HD-3000 card to work !

Over-the-air TV from the antenna on the roof is the only input for my HD-3000.
It might be worth a try to install xawtv and see if it will use my
HD-3000 without
the firmware being uploaded. But before I get to that, I still have
to solve the
problem of Scanned Channels getting Guide Data associated with them.

Hi
Simon, I'm also using 2.6.11 kernel drivers on my gentoo system. I have
compiled mythtv from source instead of getting it from an ebuild.
Anyway, I have also ompiled the linuxtv-apps from linuxtv.org. In this
bundling of test utilitys there is a scan utility useful for scanning
transponders and getting an output of channels that can be used in vdr.

When using the scan utility I can scan both my satellites without any
problems and therefore switching between the LNB:s work. An example
"./scan -s 1 dvb-s/THor-1.0W" where the "-s 1" tells the scan utility to
use the second LNB and this works without any problems.

So what I'm trying to say in a long way is that I do not think it is the
kernel drivers that are the issue.

No probs simon ;-).. What linux os are you running? Have you tried the
linuxtv package and compiled the drivers from their source?!

Anyway, there have to be someone out there who have successfully
installed and setup diseqc switching (1.0, 2-way). I've read somewhere
on these lists that the problems with Diseqc was encountered with the
0.17 release or I may be wrong in this case?!

I've checked the ouput from mythtv-setup and when I'm using the first
LNB to scan the transponders I see this command is sent:

"DiSEqC 1.0 Switch - Port 0
DiSEqC Sending 1.0 Command: e0 10 38 f1"

Shortly thereafter I get a lock on the signal. But when i use the second
videosource, the one that is connected to LNB2, i get the following command:

"DiSEqC 1.0 Switch - Port 1
DiSEqC Sending 1.0 Command: e0 10 38 f4"

and after this I get No Lock. So from this I see that the commands sent
to the switch may is only different by the last piece "f1" and "f4". Is
this correct?! I only have two LNB's.

I'm not positive about what is indicated by the log records, but I've
seen these symptoms (slow seek, timer "countup" when doing so) when my
commflag markup table was messed up.

Least invasively, try:

% mythcommflag --rebuild

Then try watching something and seeking around. If that doesn't work,
you could try repairing your database (read the whole thing and note
the notes about backing up your database, shutting down mysql, etc.):

http://builder.com.com/5100-6375_14-5193721.html

Then restart mysql and run mythcommflag as above.

[mythtv-users] Mythfrontend wont run (was: upgrade problems)

2005-06-12 Thread John Williams
I have just upgraded from .17 to .18.1 using atrpms. When I rebooted.
I can't get mythfrontend to run. I also can't get mythtv-setup to run.
It opens the background and freezes in mythfrontend. In mythtv-setup
it gives me the first 2 questions about clearing the channels and the
card data once i ghave answered those it freezes. There are no
underlying windows or anything else.

I'm running FC3 I installed via atrpms and Jarrod's guide when myth
was still .16. I upgraded to .17 by manually compiling and now the
upgrade to .18.1 was via atrpms again.

Is there something I may have done wrong? Could it be that I use the
titivillus theme and maybe it isn't being found or painted properly.
Mythbackend is running fine (or so it appears). I've been looking at
teh database and it appears to even to coninue to record. I just can't
see it through the frontend.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John Willaims

Drew,

Have you tried controlling your receiver? I couldn't see the flashes from my blaster in a digital camera, some cameras have stronger IR filters than others.
I hooked it up to my receiver and it worked.

connect the two together, and then send and receive to ensure the portis working consistently. Alternatively, if the other machine isrunning linux you could try the blaster on that machine too (or use alive CD to test it).
If there is a single COM port, it is likely set as COM1 with address0x3f8, and IRQ 4. (Check the BIOS on messages on boot to confirm this)When I had a machine using a receiver on the Hauppauge card and a
blaster on the serial port, I had to build 2 separate instances ofLIRC to control them. The details are explained here:
http://losdos.dyndns.org:8080/public/mythtv-info/MythTV_DISH_IR_LED_TX_via_Modified_LIRC.htmlThe second instance has its own config, own remotes definitions, andown running modified LIRC instance. You need to remove the kernel
serial driver from using the device before you modprobe lirc_serialwhich will control the device. Assuming the correct device nodes existfor the second instance, and that the physical device actually works,
you should be up and running. If you've followed the instructions on lircsetup and still gotnowhere, I'd try to see if you can tell if the device works beforespending a lot more time trying to configure it. It's pretty much a
case of installing LIRC, supplying the correct remotes definition filefor the blaster, and starting it up. It may be easier to firststop/remove the LIRC process using the Hauppauge card whilst you aretrying to verify the blaster is working, as you only need to worry
about having a single working instance of LIRC for the blaster. Whenit's up and running, you can then add back the IR receiver LIRCinstance and should then have both running.HTH,Nick___

[mythtv-users] can't enter edit mode

2005-06-12 Thread Eugene

Hi all,

I am having a really bizzarre problem with mythtv. When I watch a
recording and try to enter the edit mode by pressing e, nothing happens.
Nothing. This used to work perfectly.

Also, (this may be related) when I use a 30 sec skip or 10 min jump, it
scrolls very very slow. You can actually see it count up the timer.
Again, this used to work -- previously it would jump to the new position
immediately.

I thought I broke something, so I reinstalled the OS, drivers, and
mythtv, but the problem persists. I've attached the console output from
mythfrontend while doing the following:

- start mythfrontend
- play a recording
- try to edit it
- exit

Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+
VIA KT266a mobo
Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 LE
Hauppauge PVR-250
on-board sound
200GB HD

running Debian Testing (3.1)
kernel 2.6.8-2-k7 (stock kernel, it's probably 2.6.8.1 with Debian patches)
NVIDIA driver 1.0-7174
ivtv-0.2.0-rc3j
lirc-0.7.1
mythtv-0.18

Any ideas?

thanks in advance,

Eugene

What might be the reason is that in mythtv-setup, after you defined your card,
you have to define 2 video-sources. DVBS-1 and DVBS-2 of Thor and Sirius.
Then at Input-Connections you attach teh 'video-sources' to each channel.

This is what solved my problem. Sounded logical after having it done but
didn't sound obvious to me in the first place.

Hi again
Thx for replying Henk. I have already defined the video sources and
connected them to the corresponding LNB:s in the Input-Connection setup.
In my setup right now I've got Sirius on LNB1 and Thor on LNB2. I can
successfully scan the transponders I've added for the Sirius videosource
but I cannot get anything from LNB2, i.e. Thor? If i switch it all
around so that Thor is on LNB1 and Sirius is on LNB2 both in myth and on
my Diseqc i can scan the transponders of Thor and I get a signal locked.

I have also tried another Diseqc switch but the problem is still there.

What does the backend log give when the shutdown is attempting to run
when the backend becomes idle? Normally you can see output from nvram
when running and updating the RTC. Also make sure the nvram-wakeup is
in the location the DB is pointing to.

[mythtv-users] No wakeup anymore? Worked in 0.18

2005-06-12 Thread Fredrik Karlsson
Hi,

I had the automatic wakeup feature working in 0.16-0.18. After having
reinstalled everything and therefore installed 0.18.1 I cannot get it
to work.

blockSDWUwithoutClient 0 NULL
idleTimeoutSecs 60 NULL
idleWaitForRecordingTime30 NULL
StartupSecsBeforeRecording 120 NULL
WakeupTimeFormattime_t NULL
SetWakeuptimeCommand/usr/local/bin/nvram-wakeup -A -s $timeNULL
ServerHaltCommand /sbin/halt -p NULL
preSDWUCheckCommand NULL

The commands given by themselves at the command prompt gives the
decired results.
Any ideas what I should do?

/Fredrik
