Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-500 driving me nuts
I reliably get my PVR-500 (and my PVR-150) to work on my FC4 setup using the ATRPMs at-testing version of ivtv (currently ivtv 0.3.6w), then go back to an earlier version of firmware as recommended here: http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=FirmwareVersions . (Instructions for installing the firmware this way are here: http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=ExtractingTheFirmware) I am not convinced that the v0.2 versions of ivtv won't work, but I know the 0.3 versions work and I've had no problems with them yet. I am experimenting with configurations, so I've used this method to get my PVR-500 and PVR-150 working in separate boxes as well as all in one box. Also, the ivtv thread link above makes a lot of sense to me. I have to not just reboot, but shutdown my machine and restart to get the new firmware to work (it loads but I still have no sound and/or static). Finally, I only use my tuner 0's, so no promises that this makes the other inputs work. Hope this helps! Re: [mythtv-users] Windows Viewing Solutions?
I can't help you with Windows, but what is the problem when you try to run Knoppmyth (or Knoppix)? Do you have the BIOS set to boot from the CD? If you can get Knoppmyth to boot, you should be able to run a frontend with it. If it won't boot, check the BIOS. What are you trying to give MS users access to? You could could mount your storage as an SMB share which will allow MS users to use Myth as a network drive. I don't know if .nuv files will work (although if you're recording from a PVR card, .nuv is really .mpg, and a player like AllPlayer should be able to decode. AFAIK, DVB cards also dump raw mpeg2 streams that should be playable by just about anything. The problem with this is that the file names are less than descriptive, and this would not allow access to things like live TV, program guide, etc. This will work well, though, if you have shows and films transcoded into mp4 and with human-readable names. MythstreamTV might work to get live TV to the MS frontends, but I've never got it working. Another option, of course, is a impassioned harangue directed at your housemates on the relative merits of different *NIX OSs, the weakness of the OS they're currently running, a bit about the economic problem of giving MS so much cash and power, and an emphatic declaration that they have nothing to lose but their chains (or something like that). For what it's worth, I've had no problem setting up dual-boot systems with FC3. Just make sure the HDD is well and truly defragmented before you repartition the drive. RE: [mythtv-users] MythDora Won't Boot
Well, I don't know anything about MythDora but I had a similar problem with FC3. It was a conflict between the graphical boot loader ( Fedora uses 'rhgb' ) and my xorg.conf file. Here's how I fixed it: 1) Boot into a rescue distribution ( you can find them lots of places ) 2) mount your old file system ( dependant on rescue distro ) 3) Either: a) Fix your xorg.conf file and reboot or b) Remove the graphical boot loader option from the kernel line (e.g. in Grub boot loader). This might allow you to boot into a command line where you can find/fix your problems. After fixing you can change Grub back and reboot. This might also have nothing to do with your problem, but it might give you a place to start. -Tim -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of flim Sent: Sunday, July 31, 2005 10:23 AM To: mythtv-users@mythtv.org Subject: [mythtv-users] MythDora Won't Boot This is a long shot, but I'm hoping someone can help me with this one... [mythtv-users] Experiences with XvMC
Having been on the list for some time I was familiar with nvidia + xvmc combination and wanted to try it out. I picked up an evga GeForce FX 5200 PCI adapter and stuck it into my SIS based P4 Northwood 2.4GHz Pundit system. (Note: not the Pundit-R) Setup was done under Gentoo 2005.0 using all stable packages with kernel 2.6.12- r4. I wanted to put down some notes for others who might be considering the same. My goal was to evaluate the xvmc + nvidia playback quality for future HDTV use. For playback I used xine-lib 1.1.0 and xine-ui 0.99.4 along with a few 1920x1080i and 1280x720p clips. I also used some standard DVD video to compare xv with xvmc processing. My viewing was focused around deinterlacing and artifacts that might be seen from post processing. For a display I used DVI out at 1280 x 720 to my Panasonic PT-L500U projector. Setup of nvidia + xvmc on Gentoo is well documented and went off without a hitch using nvidia-kernel 1.0.7667. Over all I was impressed with the results. Using xvmc I was able to easily playback 1080i clips with about 35% cpu use. Considering the low end PCI bus on the Pundit system board and the low end GPU on the FX 5200. I had two issues that for me are critical. When using xvmc with Xine none of the OSD overlays would work. This meant no on screen information, subtitles, or closed captions during playback. I didn't investigate this to much however I think it could be worked around. One possibility seems to be with the Xine xxmc support. XvMC appears to do very simple one-field deinterlacing in hardware. Xine 1.1.0 has experimental XvMC bob deinterlace support which I enabled and saw some improvements. I compared various DVD (480i content) scenes played via Xv with Xine deinterlace post processing and XvMC with hardware deinterlace. It was pretty clear to me that Xv with deinterlace post processing was producing a much better picture than XvMC using hardware deinterlacing. Based on my testing I think using nvidia + xvmc could be acceptable when dealing with HDTV streams but should be avoided for standard NTSC 480i content or where ever else it isn't absolutely needed. The best solution, from an image quality standpoint, would be to avoid XvMC and use a powerful system to handle the HDTV content decoding and playback. Obviously that solution brings with a host of other problems dealing with heat and noise. Right now I'm unsure of which direction I'll go in. I know I will be scraping my pundit and setting up a full FE/BE in a nice HTPC case like the ones Silverstone makes. The cheap solution, for me, is to get a socket 478 ATX board that supports my existing P4, memory, and other hardware then add in a quality Nvidia AGP based adapter. Considering the prices of nice looking HTPC cases and silent power supplies this might be the way to go as an interim step. -- Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] AIM: BlueCame1 ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Make sure you disabled ARTS in KDE. Download gnome-alsamixer. Run gnome-alsamixer. Make sure the IEC958 box is checked. Adjust the volume control all the way up or all the way down for the IEC958 mixer. Test with aplay. Test with xine using the -aALSA and -HWAC3, flags (thats probably not the exact syntax read the man page). If you are using HDTV enable AC3 out in the mythfrontend setup screen. If you want to get more advanced follow the Mythtv WIKI howto for digital sound. When IEC958 is enabled you should see the port on the card light up. Re: [mythtv-users] ALSA Sound
I'm not familiar with the Chaintech AV710 - but I'm assuming it has alsa drivers? There are two ways to get alsa sound out your digital SPDIG plug in MythTV.1) If you have OSS compatibility turned on change your myth output device to /dev/adsp - this will use the OSS mixer to output PCM sound via the SPDIF Plug (this has worked for me on two via motherboards, a SIS based board and a PCI based MIDI/Sound Card)2. If you don't want OSS (pure alsa) change your Myth audio device to ALSA: iec958. This will not have a mixer (myth audio controls won't work), but you will get audio - change your volume on the receiver.DavidOn 31-Jul-05, at 1:41 PM, Brandon Rogers wrote: All, I know this has probably been talked about before, but since after 2 days of searching Google and trying “solutions” others have posted, I will come back and ask a question (which has probably already been asked 1000 times). [mythtv-users] Looking for MythFM or equivilant
I've been a Myth user for about a year - I've got a wonderful setup that I'm extremely happy with. It includes (for those interested) 6 different tuners (some HDTV, some ivtv, some saa7134) SPDIF Audio, 2 terrabytes of diskspace, 2xfrontends, 2xbackends - the list goes on. I'm looking to add Radio recording to my setup, there are two radio shows in my area I want to record one is Comedy, one is news. I've googled and found references to two radio plugins for Myth, MythFM and MythRadio - but I'm unable to access/download either of them. MythRadio doesn't seem to have a homepage, and MythFM's homepage is gone. So, my question: Has anyone gotten radio plugin to work with Myth V18.1, and if so which one? Thanks! Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-500 driving me nuts
I had the same problem as the original poster: PVR-500, all dark static, no sound. The solution seems to be loading the ivtv module with the tda9887=0,0 parameter. I (temporarily) solved it by removing all of the IVTV-related modules: rmmod bttv wm8775 cx25840 tuner tveeprom ivtv videodev video_buf v4l2_common ...and then loading with the right parameter: modprobe ivtv tda9887=0,0 It should be possible to make that permanent by adding this line to /etc/modules.conf: options ivtv tda9887=0,0 ...but it didn't work for me. Hi Scott, I've been doingh the same analysis on HD playback . I've been doing XvMC with an FX5200 AGP card. When it's working well, it's very good. But, I get the prebuffering pause issues, which causes choppy playback. I'm surprised that you were able to do HD playback via the PCI bus. I didn't think the bandwidth was sufficient for [EMAIL PROTECTED] Maybe XvMC changes the equation a bit.. Can you still get decent HD playback without XvMC? Another thing I'm interested in is the 'Unichrome' display adapters. This S3/VIA video chips do full MPEG decoding, not just the iDCT+MC done with XvMC. I don't know if it is any more/less capable with things like de-interlacing. Also, the 'Unichrome' version is integrated into the motherboard, I don't know if they have the same capabilities in their add-in cards. Prior to moving to MythTV, I used a 'MyHD' card in Windows. It had a hardware MPEG decoder, which did a nice job of scaling and de-interlacing, which almost no CPU requirements. I would love to find something similar for MythTV. On 7/31/05, Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Having been on the list for some time I was familiar with nvidia + xvmc combination and wanted to try it out. -- Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] AIM: BlueCame1 ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Even after you fix the corrupted table, the problem will persist until you rebuild the seektable entries using mythcommflag. If you deleted the database and recreated it, it may or may not help: if you recreated it from a backup of a bad database, it will still be broken; if you recreated it with a partial backup (i.e. recorded, oldrecorded, and maybe a couple others, you'll have a clean database, but you would still get the problem without the recordedmarkup table entries. Regardless, you probably have missing or bad entries in recordedmarkup. You can rebuild the seektable entries file by file with something like: mythcommflag --rebuild -f filename or, if you'd prefer to just punt (note that this could take several days of CPU time to rebuild everything depending on quantity) delete the rows from recordedmarkup (i.e. truncate table recordedmarkup) when you're not recording anything, then mythcommflag --all I would recommend testing one program--verify that it shows the macro blocks when you seek forward, then use mythcommflag to rebuild only that file's seektable entries, and test to see if it clears up the problem. Sure it has to be that way in case of a single tuner, but with multiple tuners it does not make sense (to me atleast). I guess it should be optional behavior. If I'm watching livetv, I want to watch what I've tuned, not what I've scheduled for recording. General note--I'm pretty sure Isaac and the other devs don't want the trac system to be used for discussions about why Myth works the way it does. That's what the mythtv-user's list is for... I'm almost willing to guarantee that if Isaac marks a ticket as closed/invalid, he doesn't want people to mark it reopened/valid. As for your question, the logic is that Myth has first choice on which tuner to use, and it will use high-priority tuners in preference to low-priority tuners. That way, recordings--which you're infinitely more likely to keep than LiveTV (which Myth currently doesn't provide a means of saving)--are more likely to be good quality recordings. So, how do you make it work the way you want? If you have multiple tuner cards, you can select the option, Avoid conflicts between live TV and scheduled shows. If you choose this option, LiveTV will use the lowest-priority tuner so recordings--which start with the highest-priority and work down to lowest-priority tuner--will not boot you from LiveTV until your LiveTV tuner is the only one not being used for a recording. [mythtv-users] Invisible Myth Box
This might be slightly OT but I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a utility to monitor the temp of my CPU? In an effort to obtain high WAF I have relocated my amps, the cable box and a new (almost installed) MythTV box to a purpose built plywood cabinet that now lives in the crawl space under my house. It is maybe a little less convenient in some ways but I figure once the Myth box is completely setup there isnt much need to get at the thing physically. To get the IR to work (cable box as well as PVR-350) I built an Infra-red Extender kit (Jaycar KC-5209) and put the receiver in a standard wall plate on the skirting board. Kinda cool really (if I do say so myself), the idea is that the only things you see in the living room are the TV and the speakers. Ive vented the box and am about to install some fans but would like to get an idea of how hot the Myth box is running. I can VNC in to run this tool of course. With tuner priority you probably mean the Input preference setting of Video Sources / mythtv-setup? I have it 0 for both of the cards, thus they should have equal priorities, right? Does the first card (device number) have automatically higher priority even though the cards are physically equal? Yes. In the event of a tie, lowest card number wins. If so, it seems to be a bug to me as it should not matter which one the recorder picks in my case. It's not considered a bug because the Avoid conflicts option allows you to get the behavior you would get otherwise, but with a lot less complex logic involved in making the decision. No ties means there's always one right answer. Anyways, I'm glad if the option you mentioned changes the behavior to I'm preferring. The MythStreamTV plugin will allow you to do this (using VLC). My current way around that is using mythlink.sh to create a better name for the file . Then I find the file using file explorer and dobule click. That's probably the easiest way. Basically, if you play it from the filesystem, it's just a file, so there's no downloading involved. RE: [mythtv-users] MythDora Won't Boot
This is a long shot, but I'm hoping someone can help me with this one... I've just installed MythDora (1.3.1) and was very impressed with the ease and speed at which I managed to install it. The initial install went fine, then it came up after the reboot and asked about my display - again, I was impressed it had my display listed. It then restarted again and gets as far as 'Configuring kernel parameters:' and will remain blank forever more. I'm hoping someone's going to tell me I'm being stupid and have been spoiled by Fisher Price - My First Linux distros like SuSE and that all I have to do is type 'go'... I think I'm being a little naive, though. Yours hopefully, flim I'm glad you found the install relatively easy. You don't mention what video card your using. If you happen to be using any of the various video card drivers, did you leave all the boxes checked when you chose a card in setup? If not, especially using an Nvidia card, this would have left out a needed package. And like some had just said, it may very well be a problem with rhgb even though I have never experienced this. Version 1.4 will be out soon and rhgb will be removed from bootup in this version. Dennis ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

However on my studio machine, where I have an HDSP 9652 26-in/26-out all digital sound card that has an internal hardware mixer I only get full volume from mythfrontend no matter how I adjust the volume within the program. Is there a way to have mythfrontend itself handle the volume of the audio stream internally so taht it doesn't depend on external Alsa mixers? The HDSP 9652 does not use alsamixer and does not support whatever API is used for that stuff. Further, if possible, I'd like to be able to tell mythfrontend to connect to specific alsa_pcm ports. My surround sound receiver isn't recognizing the signal unfortunately. I guess the only three possible problems is that the sound is being encoded in a way that the receiver doesn't understand, the light isn't actually carrying any sound and I still have a configuration problem, or the receiver has a broken optical in (which has never been used before, so who knows...). I think (hope) it is probably the second or first one, but I'll keep playing with it. If you have ANY suggestions, I'm pleased to receive them. Also, at first, I thought the clarity of the 1080i (540p in some cases) is actually better than the NTSC output. However, after playing with things, I'm not sure this is the case. Most of the clarity seems to come from simply having such a low resolution (the text is huge). Sure, there is *some* clarity enhancements, but seeing as the resolution is so low, I wonder if it is really worth it. I can crank my resolution up, modulate it to NTSC, and I get more screen real estate, the picture quality (for an average video user) are very close (admittedly, the 1080i/540p is better), but by how much and is it really worth it? [mythtv-users] atrpms mplayer audio issue
Anybody else on FC3 using atrpms having mplayer issues? I recently did a full system update and now mplayer had developed the annoying problem of the audio running slightly behind the video (probably 0.25 - 0.5 seconds). I have a very bare bones audio setup -- no ALSA or anything. Playing native myth recordings work fine - it's only mplayer. I started using avidemux2 for step 1. but I had audio sync issues that I could not correct with a static audio skew. ProjectX seems to do some kind of correction, and in fact it says it is fixing frame ordering when I use it in the logs. Total time from transfer of the MPEG2 to my Linux box to a burned DVD is about 45 minutes. I even have a little shell script that takes care of most of the brain dead steps (mplex, dvdauthor, mkisofs, not the editing!). I can crank my resolution up, modulate it to NTSC, and I get more screen real estate, the picture quality (for an average video user) are very close (admittedly, the 1080i/540p is better), but by how much and is it really worth it? Text that should just be white on black is magenta in the middle. Weird, but readable. X looks fine. I can get 480p and 540p working fine. 1080i jitters up-down (like the interlace timing is wrong) on both DVI and component. I can't test 720p on my HDTV. I haven't been able to compensate for the overscan of the monitor at HDTV resolutions. Nvidia has a control for this, but it doesn't seem to have any effect in the HDTV modes. In text mode, the component output does correct for overscan but DVI doesn't. I think I have seen a posting from someone claiming that their 6800GT card with component out works fine. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] Problems with mythweb
I don't think that's my problem (could be wrong though) - as per the README file, I checked my php.ini and it contains allow_url_fopen = On. Is there another setting that I need to change that would be preventing the php script from having permission to connect to the backend? Backend could be firewalled... -Chris ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] OT: Reset Overscan after fullscreen apps
This is kind of off topic but I thought it was worth the asking. I am running .18 on Ubuntu with a PVR-350 and a Nvidia GF440MX for video output (should have gone with the 250, oh well) I like to play stepmania on my tv (this game rocks www.stepmania.com). I added it to my pc games list and it works just fine but when it switches full screen it clears any and all overscan settings i have made with nvidia-settings. It does the same with my NES emulator. Is there any way, after a program exits to restore these settings? ThanksNathan HessonI have gmail invites. [mythtv-users] question on tuner activation
If a slave backend server starts up, but can't use its tuner, why is it still counted as a working tuner? As an example, I've been having problems with ivtv on a box - it seems that between udev and kernel errors, this box won't get a working recording backend running on it when it boots up. Some manual intervention on my end is needed. So knowing that I have to *fix* the problem at that point is my burden to bear, granted. The question is whether this log snippet: 2005-07-31 22:17:03.787 Channel(/dev/video0)::Open(): Can't open video device, error Permission denied 2005-07-31 22:17:03.874 Channel(/dev/video0)::Open(): Can't open video device, error Permission denied 2005-07-31 22:17:03.882 ChannelBase: Could not find input: Tuner 0 on card when setting channel 3 and this log snippet: 2005-07-31 22:17:03.944 mythbackend version: 0.19.20050712-1 www.mythtv.org 2005-07-31 22:17:03.962 Enabled verbose msgs : important general 2005-07-31 22:17:03.994 AutoExpire: Found 1 recorders w/max rate of 72 MiB/min 2005-07-31 22:17:03.999 AutoExpire: space: 1.1 GB w/freq: 10 min 2005-07-31 22:17:05.103 Connecting to master server: 10.1.0.55:6543 2005-07-31 22:17:05.164 Connected successfully 2005-07-31 22:17:10.278 AutoExpire: Found 1 recorders w/max rate of 72 MiB/min 2005-07-31 22:17:10.297 AutoExpire: space: 1.1 GB w/freq: 10 min 2005-07-31 22:17:14.004 New DB connection, total: 3 really make sense... since the backend knows it can't use the tuner, it shouldn't allow it to be used for recording... Just an observation... -Ian signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
