I've googled high and low and found every answer from yes, with a

Does anyone know (maybe with a working configuration :) if it is
possible, or conversely if it's currently impossible at least I'll
know and stop bashing my head against the wall... Everything else
works the the script looks great, it just hangs on the playback :(

Save your head - it doesn't work. I even downloaded and compiled the
latest version of mplayer from CVS which was supposed to fix this
but it didn't. I also have had trouble with RTJPEG format. It seems to
 be MPEG2 or nothing.

Is anyone successfully compiling recent revisions of MythTV with GCC4?

Use the stable svn branch, there are some gcc4 fixes in there.

What about GCC4 on an X86_64 machine?

That's twice the trouble. Couldn't get mythplugins running on FC4, but
it wasn't gcc4, it was a 32 vs 64 bit issue.

Are GCC4 compile problems considered bugs with MythTV or with GCC4?

P.S. I'm not looking to downgrade - That would mean recompiling the kernel

a dozen other apps - it isn't worthwhile.

Mandriva will have some gcc 3.x compatibility package. I would start
with this one for building mythtv. Also do you want to check out the

[mythtv-users] Audio Setup

2005-07-31 Thread Marty Ravell

Well, Ive finally gotten around to trying to finish
the setup of my MythTV box. (Such a pity when work gets in the way of personal
projects).

This may be a silly question but I am wondering about the
setup of audio in my particular rig. I have a straight combined front and back
end box based on Jarods Guide with FC3, a Hauppage 350 in an Intel motherboard
that has a basic sound card in it.

So my question is, if the 350 has audio input and output do
I use these or do I go with the motherboards onboard audio?

Do I need to route the 350s audio back through the
embedded audio perhaps?

Can someone please explain the way that a rig based on a 350
should work?

BTW. Im doing X over the 350 and this at lest seems
to work OK. Havent got the tuner to work properly yet but plan to post
another email to this list shortly.

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-500 driving me nuts

2005-07-31 Thread Rob Bongiovi
I reliably get my PVR-500 (and my PVR-150) to work on
my FC4 setup using the ATRPMs at-testing version of
ivtv (currently ivtv 0.3.6w), then go back to an
earlier version of firmware as recommended here:
http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=FirmwareVersions
. (Instructions for installing the firmware this way
are here:
http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=ExtractingTheFirmware)
I am not convinced that the v0.2 versions of ivtv
won't work, but I know the 0.3 versions work and I've
had no problems with them yet.

I am experimenting with configurations, so I've used
this method to get my PVR-500 and PVR-150 working in
separate boxes as well as all in one box.

Also, the ivtv thread link above makes a lot of sense
to me. I have to not just reboot, but shutdown my
machine and restart to get the new firmware to work
(it loads but I still have no sound and/or static).

Finally, I only use my tuner 0's, so no promises that
this makes the other inputs work.

Hope this helps!

[mythtv-users] Ripping excellent DVDs in latest ATRPMs

2005-07-31 Thread Rob Bongiovi
I see this has been asked a few time before, but no
answers, so I'll try again. Now that the transcode was
turned back on in mtd in the ATRPMs packages, I can't
get a DVD to rip in excellent quality. I can get a
perfect copy. Like the others have said, it does the
first step - ripping the file off the dvd, but it
doesn't seem to do the next - transcoding to perfect
quality. No files get left in the temporary directory
and nothing in the logs. Is there a fix to this? Doesn
anyone know what is going on?

[mythtv-users] Windows Viewing Solutions?

2005-07-31 Thread Dan Poltawski
Hello there,

I apologise for asking what must be a frequently asked question, but
are there any current options for viewing mytv streams on windows with
mythtv 0.18.1? I am in the UK and use a DVB setup which seems not to
love DSMyth, the windows front end seems to be broken, possibly tied
to the old protocol I am just frustrated that there seems to be no
solution to work with windows at the present time.

Does anyone have *any* kind of working windows setup?

Its mainly a bonus point for me because we have the network setup with
2 mac frontends and an xbox running xebian in the living room doing
the communal viewing just fine. But it'd be nice to allow my windows
housemates to view things too. Sadly knopmyth seems not to boot on
their pc's (which is very odd).

thanks for any help (and great job hardworking devs!)

Re: [mythtv-users] Windows Viewing Solutions?

2005-07-31 Thread Dewey Smolka
I can't help you with Windows, but what is the problem when you try to
run Knoppmyth (or Knoppix)? Do you have the BIOS set to boot from the
CD? If you can get Knoppmyth to boot, you should be able to run a
frontend with it. If it won't boot, check the BIOS.

What are you trying to give MS users access to? You could could mount
your storage as an SMB share which will allow MS users to use Myth as
a network drive. I don't know if .nuv files will work (although if
you're recording from a PVR card, .nuv is really .mpg, and a player
like AllPlayer should be able to decode. AFAIK, DVB cards also dump
raw mpeg2 streams that should be playable by just about anything.

The problem with this is that the file names are less than
descriptive, and this would not allow access to things like live TV,
program guide, etc. This will work well, though, if you have shows and
films transcoded into mp4 and with human-readable names. MythstreamTV
might work to get live TV to the MS frontends, but I've never got it
working.

Another option, of course, is a impassioned harangue directed at your
housemates on the relative merits of different *NIX OSs, the weakness
of the OS they're currently running, a bit about the economic problem
of giving MS so much cash and power, and an emphatic declaration that
they have nothing to lose but their chains (or something like that).

For what it's worth, I've had no problem setting up dual-boot systems
with FC3. Just make sure the HDD is well and truly defragmented before
you repartition the drive.

Good luck

[mythtv-users] MythDora Won't Boot

I was impressed it had my display listed. It then restarted again and
gets as far as 'Configuring kernel parameters:' and will remain blank

RE: [mythtv-users] MythDora Won't Boot

2005-07-31 Thread Timothy McFadden
Well, I don't know anything about MythDora but I had a similar problem with
FC3.

It was a conflict between the graphical boot loader ( Fedora uses 'rhgb' )
and my xorg.conf file.

Here's how I fixed it:
1) Boot into a rescue distribution ( you can find them lots of
places )
2) mount your old file system ( dependant on rescue distro )
3) Either:
a) Fix your xorg.conf file and reboot
or
b) Remove the graphical boot loader option from the kernel
line (e.g. in Grub boot loader). This might allow you to boot into a
command line where you can find/fix your problems. After fixing you can
change Grub back and reboot.

This might also have nothing to do with your problem, but it might give you
a place to start.

You can assign the same button to multiple programs,
 that is not a problem.

The command line I'm using for xine is:
 xine -D -pfhq --auto-scan dvd

Unfortunately, the man page for the version of xine I

 problem.

-H is wanted because my video driver is dxr3, a holly-
wood plus card. i don't want to see an empty video window
when playback is via dxr3 on my tv.

-I is (i think) for switching on deinterlace. but the lirc
problem also happens without -I

i also had this config working on my heavily patched
mandrake 10.0 before but the update to mdk 10.2 made
this issue pop up...

in my last config i compiled almost everything myself
(at least kernel, lirc, dxr3, xine, mplayer, myth).
and i am quite sure that i had lirc 0.7.0, but i deleted
the sources unfortunately so i am not sure :(

i think i will give it a try and update the lirc stuff
by hand and see if it behaves the same way. just wanted to
avoid it ;)

i will give feedback if this helps.

many thanks so far

Also, are you using a window manager when running
MythTV? If not, it could cause some focus issues that
might contribute to what you're seeing.

kde 3.3 as it comes with mdk 10.2

i thought these focus problems are only related to

[mythtv-users] Experiences with XvMC

2005-07-31 Thread Scott
Having been on the list for some time I was familiar with nvidia +
xvmc combination and wanted to try it out. I picked up an evga
GeForce FX 5200 PCI adapter and stuck it into my SIS based P4
Northwood 2.4GHz Pundit system. (Note: not the Pundit-R) Setup was
done under Gentoo 2005.0 using all stable packages with kernel 2.6.12-
r4. I wanted to put down some notes for others who might be
considering the same.

My goal was to evaluate the xvmc + nvidia playback quality for future
HDTV use. For playback I used xine-lib 1.1.0 and xine-ui 0.99.4 along
with a few 1920x1080i and 1280x720p clips. I also used some standard
DVD video to compare xv with xvmc processing. My viewing was focused
around deinterlacing and artifacts that might be seen from post
processing. For a display I used DVI out at 1280 x 720 to my
Panasonic PT-L500U projector.

Setup of nvidia + xvmc on Gentoo is well documented and went off
without a hitch using nvidia-kernel 1.0.7667. Over all I was
impressed with the results. Using xvmc I was able to easily playback
1080i clips with about 35% cpu use. Considering the low end PCI bus
on the Pundit system board and the low end GPU on the FX 5200.

I had two issues that for me are critical.

When using xvmc with Xine none of the OSD overlays would work. This
meant no on screen information, subtitles, or closed captions during
playback. I didn't investigate this to much however I think it could
be worked around. One possibility seems to be with the Xine xxmc
support.

XvMC appears to do very simple one-field deinterlacing in hardware.
Xine 1.1.0 has experimental XvMC bob deinterlace support which I
enabled and saw some improvements. I compared various DVD (480i
content) scenes played via Xv with Xine deinterlace post processing
and XvMC with hardware deinterlace. It was pretty clear to me that Xv
with deinterlace post processing was producing a much better picture
than XvMC using hardware deinterlacing.

Based on my testing I think using nvidia + xvmc could be acceptable
when dealing with HDTV streams but should be avoided for standard
NTSC 480i content or where ever else it isn't absolutely needed. The
best solution, from an image quality standpoint, would be to avoid
XvMC and use a powerful system to handle the HDTV content decoding
and playback. Obviously that solution brings with a host of other
problems dealing with heat and noise.

Right now I'm unsure of which direction I'll go in. I know I will be
scraping my pundit and setting up a full FE/BE in a nice HTPC case
like the ones Silverstone makes. The cheap solution, for me, is to
get a socket 478 ATX board that supports my existing P4, memory, and
other hardware then add in a quality Nvidia AGP based adapter.
Considering the prices of nice looking HTPC cases and silent power
supplies this might be the way to go as an interim step.

Almost... You're right about the no ALSA: in the mixer device, but
its name should be default (no quotes). However, there is currently a

If you've already tried ALSA:default and it didn't work, that would

 Nvidia .7667
 Gentoo Linux with gentoo-sources 2.6.12-r4

I can get acceptable HD playback with real time threads - but real
time threads crashes the program guide if I try and change a channel.
XVMC will work (sometimes) - but it is really random.

Nvidia has a open bug for this (it is a driver bug) - but .7667 was
 supposed to be the fix.

Anyone who has this working - What Video card are you using? (maybe I
 could just upgrade/downgrade the video).

I finally got it running with the latest drivers (7667). I did have

Well, I’ve finally gotten around to trying to finish the setup of my

This may be a silly question but I am wondering about the setup of
audio in my particular rig. I have a straight combined front and back
end box based on Jarod’s Guide with FC3, a Hauppage 350 in an Intel
motherboard that has a basic sound card in it.

So my question is, if the 350 has audio input and output do I use
these or do I go with the motherboard’s onboard audio?

All MPEG-2 playback using the PVR-350's onboard decoder will result in
sound output only through the PVR-350 audio out. All other playback
(MPEG-4, anything in MythVideo, MythDVD, MythMusic, etc.) will result in
sound output only through the soundcard audio out.

Do I need to route the 350’s audio back through the embedded audio
perhaps?

Yep. PVR-350 audio out to soundcard line in.

Can someone please explain the way that a rig based on a 350 should work?

You just did. ;)

BTW. I’m doing X over the 350 and this at lest seems to work OK.
Haven’t got the tuner to work properly yet but plan to post another
email to this list shortly.

Don't set any tuner parameters and it should work. (I.e. if you have a
line options tuner type=XX or options ivtv tuner=XX in your
mod{ules, probe}.conf, take it out. As a matter of fact, you should not
specify any options relating to ivtv.) If it still doesn't work, you
almost definitely have some other place where some script is setting
it... IvyTV ML is probably more appropriate, though...

[mythtv-users] ALSA Sound

2005-07-31 Thread Brandon Rogers

All,

I know this has probably been talked about
before, but since after 2 days of searching Google and trying solutions
others have posted, I will come back and ask a question (which has probably
already been asked 1000 times). I have the Chaintech AV710 soundcard which
seems like a popular card due to its price/performance. How do I get this cards
optical out to work with my Surround Sound Amplifier? Does it output 5.1
Surround? If so, what do I need to do to get it to work? Ive read the
MythTV Fedora HowTO and the links off that page in attempt to get the sound to
work. Ive replaced a zillion alsa sound files, but still doesnt
work. If I route the sound to PCM out, I can hear it off the Line Out port.

Thanks for your help!

Funny, that was one of the least painless parts for me. I got it
working quickly and it worked great when I used that card. Look in
Jarod's guide for some tips. But here are some rough tips. Make sure
you disabled ARTS in KDE. Download gnome-alsamixer. Run
gnome-alsamixer. Make sure the IEC958 box is checked. Adjust the
volume control all the way up or all the way down for the IEC958
mixer. Test with aplay. Test with xine using the -aALSA and -HWAC3,
flags (thats probably not the exact syntax read the man page). If you
are using HDTV enable AC3 out in the mythfrontend setup screen. If
you want to get more advanced follow the Mythtv WIKI howto for digital
sound. When IEC958 is enabled you should see the port on the card
light up.

I'm not familiar with the Chaintech AV710 - but I'm assuming it has alsa drivers? There are two ways to get alsa sound out your digital SPDIG plug in MythTV.1) If you have OSS compatibility turned on change your myth output device to /dev/adsp - this will use the OSS mixer to output PCM sound via the SPDIF Plug (this has worked for me on two via motherboards, a SIS based board and a PCI based MIDI/Sound Card)2. If you don't want OSS (pure alsa) change your Myth audio device to ALSA: iec958. This will not have a mixer (myth audio controls won't work), but you will get audio - change your volume on the receiver.DavidOn 31-Jul-05, at 1:41 PM, Brandon Rogers wrote: All,    I know this has probably been talked about before, but since after 2 days of searching Google and trying “solutions” others have posted, I will come back and ask a question (which has probably already been asked 1000 times).  I have the Chaintech AV710 soundcard which seems like a popular card due to its price/performance.  How do I get this card’s optical out to work with my Surround Sound Amplifier?  Does it output 5.1 Surround?  If so, what do I need to do to get it to work?  I’ve read the MythTV Fedora HowTO and the links off that page in attempt to get the sound to work.  I’ve replaced a zillion alsa sound files, but still doesn’t work.  If I route the sound to PCM out, I can hear it off the Line Out port. Thanks for your help!Brandon   ___mythtv-users mailing listmythtv-users@mythtv.orghttp://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___

I've been a Myth user for about a year - I've got a wonderful setup

different tuners (some HDTV, some ivtv, some saa7134) SPDIF Audio, 2
terrabytes of diskspace, 2xfrontends, 2xbackends - the list goes on.

I've googled and found references to two radio plugins for Myth,
MythFM and MythRadio - but I'm unable to access/download either of
them. MythRadio doesn't seem to have a homepage, and MythFM's
homepage is gone.

So, my question:

Has anyone gotten radio plugin to work with Myth V18.1, and if so
which one?

Thanks!

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-500 driving me nuts

2005-07-31 Thread Greg Baker
I had the same problem as the original poster: PVR-500, all dark static,
no sound. The solution seems to be loading the ivtv module with the
tda9887=0,0 parameter.

I (temporarily) solved it by removing all of the IVTV-related modules:
rmmod bttv wm8775 cx25840 tuner tveeprom ivtv videodev video_buf v4l2_common
...and then loading with the right parameter:
  modprobe ivtv tda9887=0,0

It should be possible to make that permanent by adding this line
to /etc/modules.conf:
  options ivtv tda9887=0,0
...but it didn't work for me. I'm probably missing something about the
way modules are loaded.

Hi Scott,

I've been doingh the same analysis on HD playback . I've been doing
XvMC with an FX5200 AGP card. When it's working well, it's very good.
But, I get the prebuffering pause issues, which causes choppy
playback.

I'm surprised that you were able to do HD playback via the PCI bus. I
didn't think the bandwidth was sufficient for [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Maybe XvMC changes the equation a bit.. Can you still get decent HD
playback without XvMC?

Another thing I'm interested in is the 'Unichrome' display adapters.
This S3/VIA video chips do full MPEG decoding, not just the iDCT+MC
done with XvMC. I don't know if it is any more/less capable with
things like de-interlacing. Also, the 'Unichrome' version is
integrated into the motherboard, I don't know if they have the same
capabilities in their add-in cards. Prior to moving to MythTV, I
used a 'MyHD' card in Windows. It had a hardware MPEG decoder, which
did a nice job of scaling and de-interlacing, which almost no CPU
requirements. I would love to find something similar for MythTV.

Even after you fix the corrupted table, the problem will persist until
you rebuild the seektable entries using mythcommflag.

If you deleted the database and recreated it, it may or may not help:
if you recreated it from a backup of a bad database, it will still be
broken; if you recreated it with a partial backup (i.e. recorded,
oldrecorded, and maybe a couple others, you'll have a clean database,
but you would still get the problem without the recordedmarkup table
entries.

Regardless, you probably have missing or bad entries in recordedmarkup.
You can rebuild the seektable entries file by file with something like:

mythcommflag --rebuild -f filename

or, if you'd prefer to just punt (note that this could take several
days of CPU time to rebuild everything depending on quantity) delete the
rows from recordedmarkup (i.e. truncate table recordedmarkup) when
you're not recording anything, then

mythcommflag --all

I would recommend testing one program--verify that it shows the macro
blocks when you seek forward, then use mythcommflag to rebuild only that
file's seektable entries, and test to see if it clears up the problem.

If not, do you by any chance have Seek to exact frame enabled? I
could see that causing a problem like this, but it's possible the devs
have programmed around that possibility (depending on how much slower
seek to exact frame is).

Comment:

What's the logic in that? Sure it has to be that way in case of a single
tuner, but with multiple tuners it does not make sense (to me atleast). I
guess it should be optional behavior. If I'm watching livetv, I want to
watch what I've tuned, not what I've scheduled for recording.

General note--I'm pretty sure Isaac and the other devs don't want the
trac system to be used for discussions about why Myth works the way it
does. That's what the mythtv-user's list is for...

I'm almost willing to guarantee that if Isaac marks a ticket as
closed/invalid, he doesn't want people to mark it reopened/valid.

As for your question, the logic is that Myth has first choice on which
tuner to use, and it will use high-priority tuners in preference to
low-priority tuners. That way, recordings--which you're infinitely more
likely to keep than LiveTV (which Myth currently doesn't provide a means
of saving)--are more likely to be good quality recordings.

So, how do you make it work the way you want?

If you have multiple tuner cards, you can select the option, Avoid
conflicts between live TV and scheduled shows. If you choose this
option, LiveTV will use the lowest-priority tuner so recordings--which
start with the highest-priority and work down to lowest-priority
tuner--will not boot you from LiveTV until your LiveTV tuner is the only
one not being used for a recording.

you're trying to hook your unichrome based board to a HDTV that wants
to accept either 720p or 1080i input sources.

I went looking for where I might have read this can couldn't find it.
Take this with a grain of salt and consider it something to follow up
on before purchasing a unichrome based board for use with HDTV displays.

Re: [mythtv-users] Ripping excellent DVDs in latest ATRPMs

2005-07-31 Thread Pat Vaughan
Whew! I thought I was alone! I don't know what the transcode command
line that mtd runs is, but running transcode by hand against a perfect
ripped file creates a perfectly usable MPEG file.

 Thanks,

[mythtv-users] Any way to make the DVB-EIT more reliable?

2005-07-31 Thread Johan Kihlström

Greetings all!

I've finally set up my MythTV network at home and it works like a charm,
except for one little annoying thing.
Some of the channels I'm grabbing with the excellent tv_swedb grabber
and that works flawlessly, unfortunately they do not carry all channels
that I have available, so I thought I'd rely on the DVB-EIT thing for
the remaining 5 or so channels that I have no data for.

Running mythbackend -v siparser says that there is eit-information
available and once every 2 months or so it actually works and I get data
for upcoming shows through that as well.

Is there any way to make this a bit more reliable? So that I'll get data
when there is data available.

Any ideas, tips or tricks more than welcome.

Thanks in advance

Yes, I get that too. Do you happen to be running Fedora Core 4 (or

The std::bad_alloc problem seems to be related to the aspect ratio

Interestingly, they can be played back successfully using mplayer
manually. Also, they playback just fine in the small preview window
in Myth on the recorded shows screen. After searching the mailing

Anyway, I too am searching for solutions to both of these problems as

[mythtv-users] Invisible Myth Box

2005-07-31 Thread Marty Ravell

This might be slightly OT but I was wondering if anyone
could direct me to a utility to monitor the temp of my CPU?

In an effort to obtain high WAF I have relocated my amps,
the cable box and a new (almost installed) MythTV box to a purpose built
plywood cabinet that now lives in the crawl space under my house. It is maybe a
little less convenient in some ways but I figure once the Myth box is
completely setup there isnt much need to get at the thing physically. To
get the IR to work (cable box as well as PVR-350) I built an Infra-red Extender
kit (Jaycar KC-5209) and put the receiver in a standard wall plate on the
skirting board.

Kinda cool really (if I do say so myself), the idea is that
the only things you see in the living room are the TV and the speakers.

Ive vented the box and am about to install some fans
but would like to get an idea of how hot the Myth box is running. I can VNC in
to run this tool of course. No need to have something pretty integrated into
the UI.

Any ideas?

With tuner priority you probably mean the Input preference setting of
Video Sources / mythtv-setup? I have it 0 for both of the cards, thus they

should have equal priorities, right? Does the first card (device
number) have automatically
higher priority even though the cards are physically equal?

Yes. In the event of a tie, lowest card number wins.

If so, it seems
to be a bug to me as it should not matter which one the recorder picks
in my case.

It's not considered a bug because the Avoid conflicts option allows
you to get the behavior you would get otherwise, but with a lot less
complex logic involved in making the decision. No ties means there's
always one right answer.

Anyways, I'm glad if the option you mentioned changes the behavior to
I'm preferring.

That's what it's there for... ;)

The only way to get the browser plug-ins to start playing it immediately
is to stream the file from the webserver. This requires some extra
software--something like VLC. The MythStreamTV plugin will allow you to

My current way around that is using mythlink.sh to create a better

That's probably the easiest way. Basically, if you play it from the

RE: [mythtv-users] MythDora Won't Boot

2005-07-31 Thread Dennis Hand
This is a long shot, but I'm hoping someone can help me with this one...

I've just installed MythDora (1.3.1) and was very impressed with the ease
and speed at which I managed to install it. The initial install went
fine, then it came up after the reboot and asked about my display - again,
I was impressed it had my display listed. It then restarted again and
gets as far as 'Configuring kernel parameters:' and will remain blank
forever more.

I'm hoping someone's going to tell me I'm being stupid and have been
spoiled by Fisher Price - My First Linux distros like SuSE and that all I
have to do is type 'go'... I think I'm being a little naive, though.

Yours hopefully,

flim

I'm glad you found the install relatively easy. You don't mention what video
card your using. If you happen to be using any of the various video card
drivers,
did you leave all the boxes checked when you chose a card in setup? If not,
especially using an Nvidia card, this would have left out a needed package.
And like some had just said, it may very well be a problem with rhgb even
though I have never experienced this. Version 1.4 will be out soon and rhgb
will be removed from bootup in this version.

Anybody know a way around that.

The only way to get the browser plug-ins to start playing it

some extra software--something like VLC. The MythStreamTV plugin will

[mythtv-users] Control volume within MythTV?

2005-07-31 Thread Mark Knecht
Hi,
mythfrontend works fine on all my standard hardware machines.
(laptop, backend server 2 Pundit-R machines.) However on my studio
machine, where I have an HDSP 9652 26-in/26-out all digital sound card
that has an internal hardware mixer I only get full volume from
mythfrontend no matter how I adjust the volume within the program.

Is there a way to have mythfrontend itself handle the volume of the
audio stream internally so taht it doesn't depend on external Alsa
mixers? The HDSP 9652 does not use alsamixer and does not support
whatever API is used for that stuff.

Further, if possible, I'd like to be able to tell mythfrontend to
connect to specific alsa_pcm ports. Can this be done?

Thanks,
Mark

RE: [mythtv-users] ALSA Sound and Video Modes

2005-07-31 Thread Brandon Rogers
Thanks everyone who replied on this and helped out. The sound is still not
working, but holding my finger next to the optical out on the back of the
card shows light, so I suppose that it is working from the point of view of
my computer, anyway. My surround sound receiver isn't recognizing the
signal unfortunately. I guess the only three possible problems is that the
sound is being encoded in a way that the receiver doesn't understand, the
light isn't actually carrying any sound and I still have a configuration
problem, or the receiver has a broken optical in (which has never been used
before, so who knows...). I think (hope) it is probably the second or first
one, but I'll keep playing with it. If you have ANY suggestions, I'm
pleased to receive them.

Also, at first, I thought the clarity of the 1080i (540p in some cases) is
actually better than the NTSC output. However, after playing with things,
I'm not sure this is the case. Most of the clarity seems to come from
simply having such a low resolution (the text is huge). Sure, there is
*some* clarity enhancements, but seeing as the resolution is so low, I
wonder if it is really worth it. I can crank my resolution up, modulate it
to NTSC, and I get more screen real estate, the picture quality (for an
average video user) are very close (admittedly, the 1080i/540p is better),
but by how much and is it really worth it? What does everyone think?

Thanks,
Brandon

PS. I am piping the video to an HDTV over DVI-HDMI.

Not quite CPU temp (But is that really necessary?)
What about a cheap outdoor temp sensor in the box?
(They usualy have a fairly long lead to the sensor)
(And only $10 at your local electronics shop)

I have my server under a staircase, And the temp sensor sits in a little
 nook nicely.
Whenever I go past the stairs, I can see the operating temp.

Yeah, I though about building it into Myth somehow. (Actual CPU/MB temp)

3. Create DVD structures with dvdauthor

if you get sick of doing that, dvdstyler is good front end, and will
make the iso (with a pause to test in xine) as well.

4. Create DVD ISO with mkisofs (not sure why others are using
growisofs, mkisofs works fine for me).

5. Copy DVD ISO to my Mac for burning (My Mac has the only DVD burner
 in the house.)

I started using avidemux2 for step 1. but I had audio sync issues that
I could not correct with a static audio skew. ProjectX seems to do some
kind of correction, and in fact it says it is fixing frame ordering
when I use it in the logs. Total time from transfer of the MPEG2 to my
Linux box to a burned DVD is about 45 minutes. I even have a little
shell script that takes care of most of the brain dead steps (mplex,
dvdauthor, mkisofs, not the editing!). Currently with a max variable
bit rate of 4.4Mbit (on my PVR-250), I get a little over two hours of
content on one single layer DVD-R which plays on every settop DVD
player I have tried so far (including some xboxes) with zero audio sync
issues. This means three one hour episodes minus commercials on each
DVD-R! Excellent! I started with the following HOW-TO and adapted as I
 stated above:
 http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/ArchiveRecordingsToDvdHowTo . If you
want all the gory tech details, then I will put together an HTML based
 HOW-TO and post it someplace.

I have an alternate approach for handling LiveTV on my TODO list. The

I almost never use LiveTV myself, so it's pretty low priority.

2005-07-31 Thread Brian Donaldson
Ok, I should've looked a little closer. I'm running FC4, but I've been using Jarod's FC3 install guide (which is great by the way). I missed that there was a 3 in the path in the freshrpms entry into sources.list
.

I was doing the following:

# echo rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net/ fedora/linux/3/i386 freshrpms /etc/apt/sources.list# apt-get update# apt-get install xine

I replaced that with:

# echo rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net/ fedora/linux/4/i386 freshrpms /etc/apt/sources.list# apt-get update# apt-get install xine

...and now it works. I love simple fixes. Thanks.

RE: [mythtv-users] FC4 - Xine Install Problem - Unmet Dependencies

2005-07-31 Thread Darren Coleman

(sorry for top posting, blame Outlook L )

Youre probably having problems
because you seem to be using the wrong repo for FC4. http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/3/i386/freshrpms/
is for Fedora Core 3.

Also, youre probably better off
using yum. A simple yum install xine with the
correct repos would do the job.

Im using the following, albeit on kernel-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4:

xine.i386
0.99.4-1.2.fc4 installed

xine-lib.i386
1.1.0-1.2.fc4 installed

Both came from freshrpms and installed
without any dependency issues.

I think (hope) it is probably the second or
first one, but I'll keep playing with it.

Re: [mythtv-users] YPrPb component out for MythTV

2005-07-31 Thread Dan Christian
I have a 6600GT from BFG Tech (model 6600 GTOC). It outputs component fine
(mostly).

I do have a bug that the VGA text output on DVI (dual screen mode), has funny
colors when I'm also using the component (cloned dual screen). Text that
should just be white on black is magenta in the middle. Weird, but readable.
X looks fine.

I can get 480p and 540p working fine. 1080i jitters up-down (like the
interlace timing is wrong) on both DVI and component. I can't test 720p on
my HDTV.

I haven't been able to compensate for the overscan of the monitor at HDTV
resolutions. Nvidia has a control for this, but it doesn't seem to have any
effect in the HDTV modes. In text mode, the component output does correct
for overscan but DVI doesn't. It's always nice to see the line you are
typing. :-)

If anyone has a working 1080i or a way to properly compensate for overscan,
I'd love to hear it.

[mythtv-users] question on tuner activation

2005-07-31 Thread Ian Forde
If a slave backend server starts up, but can't use its tuner, why is it
still counted as a working tuner? As an example, I've been having
problems with ivtv on a box - it seems that between udev and kernel
errors, this box won't get a working recording backend running on it
when it boots up. Some manual intervention on my end is needed. So
knowing that I have to *fix* the problem at that point is my burden to
bear, granted.

The question is whether this log snippet:
