Haven't seen anyone reply to this yet so I will. Notice he said 'lossless'.
The MPEG2->MPEG2 transcoding in SVN is for cutting only, it does not
re-encode the frames (except around the cutpoints I believe). So, the
space savings from using it are because you get to cut out those 20 minutes
of commercials out of every hour of show and if you're using TS files,
you may save space since the output format is PS.

Are you sure? When I run tzap like this:

I get output like this:

This is both when accessed on tv and mythweb.
I can see in the database (program table) that most shows are categorized

So how come there's no color?

Re: [mythtv-users] Odds of Linux CableCARD support?

2006-01-11 Thread Ross Campbell
The whole HD thing is really starting to stink.

US government forcing adoption of HDTV due to all of the egg on their
face because of the lack of interest around their non-open standard.

US governemnt forced to subsidize TV upgrades for the masses so that
we can get this "superior" TV that is being mandated by the
government. Cost to taxpayers? 1.5 billion.

New TV buyers dissatisfied by the lack of HD programming.

Cable companies moving channels from basic cable or extended basic to
digital cable just to force people to rent their underpowered cable
boxes and pay more per month.

Eventually there will be a "CableCARD Jon" and we'll be in an awkward
position of having *hardware* that is legal to use under Windows and
illegal to use under Linux!

Then, I'm sure a new standard will be proposed and we'll need to buy
new TVs all over again.

When will this madness stop???

I think I'll stick with SDTV and use my government HDTV subsidy money
to buy another hard drive.

No, I still use udev (plextor's driver can use hotplug (USE_UDEV=n) or
udev (USE_UDEV=y) to initiate to device), and /dev/dsp is my
soundcard...

Remembered this error from the logs:

If you're not using udev couldn't you just link /dev/dsp to /dev/

[mythtv-users] plextor convertx audio trouble

2006-01-11 Thread Jason
I received my Plextor ConvertX PX-TV402U this afternoon. Other than
needing to force hotplug with 'make install USE_UDEV=n', the install
went smoothly. :)

Recording with gorecord went well, I can see and hear the file.
gorecord reports using /dev/video and /dev/dsp1.

I've used mythtv for over two years (well, since 0.7-8ish), never saw
anything like this.

No matter what I try, mythbackend will only open /dev/sound/dsp. I set
it everywhere to /dev/dsp1, and when I enter setup again, it's changed to
/dev/dsp... wtf? So I went into mythconverg and changed the only
value='AudioDevice' I have in settings to /dev/dsp1. That sticks.
Unfortunately, when mythfrontend is running remotely (the only way I
ever run it), I get no audio. An 'lsof | grep myth | grep dsp' yields
only one line with mythbackend opening /dev/sound/dsp

So I search the source (0.18.1), I can see some default values set to
'/dev/dsp', but I don't see any hard-coded lines.

Right now, I'm re-merging (gentoo) mythtv with debugging support. In
the meantime, any ideas?

thx,

Jason.

btw - I checked permissions and symlinks on /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1, both
appear correct.

For the archives... I can confirm that this fix works (finally got

Unfortunately no, but I have a HD-3000 card that I haven't got around
to setting up yet, so I am very interested in this matter. I just
remembered seeing that portion of the HT.

I'm not sure what version of the kernel the HowTo was written for,
things seem to be changing even now with the video devices support.
I'm not looking forward to the upcoming "merge", although I guess in
the long run it will help.

Isn't "Customize DVB frontends" under DVB and not v4l? This would
seem to mean that it should not be selected if you chose v4l conexant
support. But I'm not anywhere near certain of this.

Unfortunately it will be a few days before I can play with my 3000
card, but I'll certainly pass along anything I figure out.

The only thing I can think of is if something is calling require instead
of require_once. I've checked my tree, and utils.php is called only
from init.php and db.php, both via require_once.

From your error message, yours is obviously pulling it twice, which
means that your version of php is broken and not doing require_once
properly, or something's messed up in your code.

I don't remember, have you done a complete clean install?

Unfortunately, I didn't look much into it. I launched it and it
immediately stopped. I've just install svn backend, so I'm afraid I
won't be able to see the error message any more.

Your video card's drivers--like all of them I've ever seen--only
supports Xv on one display. The other display shows the Xv color key.
To put the video on the TV (and the color key on your CRT), you need to
rearrange your displays. If you don't want the color key on the CRT,
you need to re-think your configuration.

[mythtv-users] PCI Express video card with picture controls

2006-01-11 Thread Mike Morrison
Hi all. I'm looking for advice on a video card.

I recently purchased a new motherboard/processor that I'd hoped to use to
upgrade my mythtv system. The new machine does everything I want it to
performance-wise -- i.e. playback HDTV video smoothly. It has one major
flaw, though. The video card is a PCI-e nvidia 6200-based card. In their
infinite wisdom, nvidia removed some of the Xv hardware support that was
in all previous video cards. Most importantly to me, it's no longer
possible to adjust color saturation and hue. Since I'm connected to my
display through an RGB DVI connection, it's not possible to adjust these
controls on the display either. The saturation setting the card uses has
the colors so blown out that it's unwatchable.

I posted to nvidia's forum and the reponse was that video overlay support
is gone and I should try using an application that has an opengl video
output driver. Since that's not a practical solution, I'm looking for
other suggestions. Does anyone know of a PCI-express video card that can
handle HDTV resolutions and has video overlay support? Nvidia used to sell
5300PCX cards, but those are no longer available.

Thanks,

-- Mike

If you're using SVN it is *your* responsibility to keep up with the dev
list...

SVN records LiveTV as regular recordings. People got all bent out of
shape over seeing the LiveTV recordings in the "All Recordings" list, so
an option to hide LiveTV recordings from "All Recordings" was made. You
have the option set to hide LiveTV recordings.

Also, it doesn't matter if your disk fills up. That's what autoexpire
is for. Ah, ah, ah. Don't say, "But I turned off autoexpire," because
autoexpire is no longer an option--it's always turned on.

Now, please go read the last 4 months of posts on the dev list (
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/ )--especially before
you post why you need the option to turn off autoexpire.

(Many of the "you's" in this message are not necessarily directed at the
OP.)

I assume you mean this "How To"?

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Setup_MythTV

I chose the same options for my kernel as shown under th "pcHDTV HD-3000
Card" heading. The menuconfig automatically includes DVB_CX22702=m and
DVB_OR51132=m in your config file when you select:

Multimedia devices --->
 Video For Linux
Video For Linux --->
 Conexant 2388x (bt878 successor) support
DVB Support for cx2388x based TV cards

If you enter "Customize DVB Frontends --->" after selecting the above,
you will see that you can not set options for

[-] Conexant cx22702 demodulator (OFDM)

Or

[-] OR51132 based (pcHDTV HD3000 card)

So as far as I can tell, I'm missing something else. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Drew

[mythtv-users] Linux newbie strikes again... PVR-150 not outputting to X300...

2006-01-11 Thread obscure information.
Hello,

I've been working on my mythtv install for a bit now, but I've
encountered an issue now that everything is more-or-less
configured.  I've got a PVR-150 that appears to be configured
properly, based on the fact that I can tune in channels and view them
on the monitor.  I can also view the output from my ATI X300 video
card using the proprietary fglrx driver on my TV without issue.

When I start the myth frontend, I can see my initial menu (i.e. watch
tv, setup, etc.) on the TV and the CRT at the same time.  As soon
as I select "Watch TV", I get a blue screen on my TV and the output
shifts solely to my CRT.  Going back to the previous menu,
bringing up the guide, and the like all result in the picture
reappearing on the TV.

I'm really not sure where to begin debugging this, but my modprobe.conf
and a snippet of my xorg.conf are pasted below for review.  If
anyone can assist me in shedding some light on what I've been doing
wrong here, I would greatly appreciate it.

For some reason, my recordings directory seems to to fill up my disk.  I emptied the folder but a few minutes late, it started to fill again.   None of the files show up under recordings, and I have not been recording anything so the folder should be empty.  I cannot figure out where the files are coming from, or why they are not being deleted automatically by mythtv.  Might somebody be able to shed some light on this?
The directory looks like the following (this is after I cleared it out once, the files had reach >2 gb each in size sometimes):[EMAIL PROTECTED] /media/recordings $ ls -alhtotal 2.5Gdrwxrwxrwx  2 mythtv users

It adds a new one everytime I change the channel, and the longer I leave it there the larger the file gets.  It is as if mythtv is always recording, but never adds anything to the database.  This is becoming a major problem as it is filling my disk every couple days or so.

Minor success!

If I make the window wider than my desktop, the video plays back
normally.  Of course, it has also crashed x once and hard frozen
the computer another time.  Perhaps the -panscan option will help
me out.On 1/11/06, Chris Ribe <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Yeah, it's the 0.18-fixes that were put in.. For some reason it

[mythtv-users] Slightly OT: receiver input buzzing/humming

...except, perhaps, in my days doing live audio work for theaters. :)
[Aha!  I think you said this because I was careless in my phrasing;
see a few paragraphs below. No hard feelings. :) ]

[I note that going into excruciatingly correct theory on audio signal
handling is -way- beyond the scope of this list. So I'm simplifying.
(Ditto for how to design the grounds on sub-microvolt lab instruments.)
There are actually some interestingly controversial theories about it
in the audio field, too, some of which seem like total voodoo, and a
lot of religious arguments over it; I prefer the lab-instrument people,
who tend to be less argumentative as a rule. And I'm especially glad
that I no longer have to nail other peoples' hum problems, particularly
during live events.]

I never said it wouldn't. ---oh wait, I see (now) how you read my
reply. I was answering the coax-bit-flipping case for the "shield
missing" hypothesis, and you were thinking along the lines of "intact
coax shield enables ground loops" hypothesis, which I didn't get into
until the -next- paragraph about tying grounds together. But I got
careless and typed "ground hum" there instead of "signal hum". Oops.
Total change in meaning due to a braino on my part. Sorry for the
confusion.

But my suspicion (as I said before) is that all this talk of ground
loops is probably bogus. I think he's got a bad signal shield
somewhere, or a bad cap, or a bad design.

Yeah, but I'll bet his TV and his computer don't, unfortunately.
And frankly, they shouldn't need it---the vast majority of stereos
get along just fine with no more attention to grounding than "make
sure you plug all the cables in all the way".

> Yes, connecting both peices of equipment to a good filtered power strip
> (Panamax, Belkin PureAV, NOT Monster) will be the best way to solve the

Maybe if it's powerline-induced ground hum, which I doubt. I've
typically found that concentrating on (and chasing) loops in powerline
grounds is counterproductive; it's usually some screwup in the signal
paths. Everybody instantly leaps to "oh, it's a ground loop!" but it
turns out to be pretty difficult to really get nailed by that sort of
thing in audio work. (I could tell you stories of truly bizarre
all-analog line-level (thank god, not mic-level) whole-building
distribution systems that, amazingly enough, functioned despite
looking like the entire thing would be one giant hairball of loops,
but nonetheless were fine if signal grounds were done right. But
I digress... :)

> problem, but may not always work, if the hum is coming from, say, a cable
> line, or failing capacitor...

My current theories. (Or just a crappy soundcard that -always- hums,
but was only noticed because he's suddenly turning things up really
load to hear unexpectedly faint output---it'd be good to know if he's
really maxed out his soundcard outputs and mixers all along the way.
Sure, they may distort, but he can back off from that and then see
if he still has to turn up the amp so far that he hears hum.)

I really think that the most productive next step in this discussion
is not to have either one of us keep talking, but to have him start
swapping cables (first), then soundcards (second), then maybe what
outlets things are plugged into (distant third), but I think that
without some experimental evidence, we've reached the end of what
anyone can sensibly say might be wrong. So I'll bow out now. :)

2006-01-11 Thread Hans Hvelplund Odborg
After resetting my Program list and seting everything up again in the
channeleditor of mythsetup I've now lost the colors in the epg.

This is both when accessed on tv and mythweb.
I can see in the database (program table) that most shows are categorized
(such as news, kids, comedy, drama, etc.)

So how come there's no color?
I'm using 0.18.1

which GPU card?
whats your xorg.conf have for loading the nvidia driver?
does the issue occur when you playback 1080i content at 1/2 size?

I thought I read somewhere that you couldn't have the v4l and the dvb
stuff at the same time. I think it's OK to have the "DVB for Linux"
and "DVB Core" as modules but the frontends will conflict, because
you have DVB from the cx2388x and from the DVB section.

This may resolve when the v4l and DVB stuff is all merged into the
kernel but I'm sure you don't want to wait that long.

 From the Gentoo MythTV HowTo:

"You can only load either the DVB or Video 4 Linux drivers, but not
both".

which would be why it wouldn't let me use it... and the Debian mdadm package
comes with a init.d script for mdadm monitoring which makes all that stuff
easy.

one thing I will note, is to remember to make the partition type "Linux raid
autodetec" in cfdisk for the partitions you will use in the array.

and I logged my lessons to a RAID writeup on the wiki,
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/RAID

please look over it and make any corrections/changes that need to be done.

I've tried again and finally figured out that by selecting this:

Device-drivers ->

  Multimedia devices ->

[-] Video for Linux ->
  Video for Linux ->
Video Adapters
[-] Conexant 2388x (bt878 successor) support (CONFIG_VIDEO_CX88=m)
[-] DVB support for cx2388x based TV Cards
(CONFIG_VIDEO_CX88_DVB=m)

Digital Video Broadcasting Devices ->
  [-] DVB for Linux(DVB=m)
[-] DVB Core Support (DVB_CORE=m)

This is selected automatically:

  Customize DVB Frontends ->
[-] Conexant cx22702 demodulator (OFDM)(DVB_CX22702=m)
[-] OR51132 based (pcHDTV HD3000 card) (DVB_OR51132=m)

Now I finally have a cx88-dvb module to load. However when I try using
'modprobe -v', I get a bunch of this:

insmod
/lib/modules/2.6.13-gentoo-r5/kernel/drivers/media/dvb/frontends/dvb-pll.ko
WARNING: Error inserting dvb_pll

So what am I missing now?

Neither of them worked, unfortunately.

Using the nv driver resulted in a slightly different version of the same problem.

Perhaps it is a peculiarity in the transport stream from the cable box,
perhaps a newer video card would help.  I guess I'll just keep

you've obvously not deallt much with audio equipment ground problems. A ground
loop hum/buzz will work its way from the input ground to the output ground to
the amp ground, etc, etc. causing hum in the output. Usually the hum will
increase in volume as the preamp volume is turned up, depending on the
topology, and can be a good way to tell if its a ground hum or powerline hum.

All good home theatre equipment will have at least 1 screw that is an external
ground point for helping to solve ground loop problems, though really they
are (or "were") there to ground record player arms back when people knew what
vinyl was.

Yes, connecting both peices of equipment to a good filtered power strip
(Panamax, Belkin PureAV, NOT Monster) will be the best way to solve the
problem, but may not always work, if the hum is coming from, say, a cable
line, or failing capacitor...

Hi all,

I've managed to get my Gentoo box (new Myth box in process of being
built) to be able to see my DCT-6412. Recently, I recorded a PPV and
would like to x-fer it to my PC to offload some PVR content (to make
space for my series recordings). Until now, I've been able to play
back the content and use test-mpeg2 to record it. With this PPV, I
get a 0 length file. For fun, I stoped playback of my PPV recording
and changed channel. The file size started increasing. Is there a
way for me to tell if my recording is protected and therefore will not
play over the firewire port?

On the same note, could I record a PPV when I order it with Myth
instead of on my 6412?

Thanks,

What I've noticed is that it either works or it doesn't. There's not
stopping in mid-capture unless I try to play back the PPV in question.
I've started verifying the oPCR setting and I'll be keeping track of
them to see when it captures and doesn't capture.

I tried to capture again with the test-mpeg2 from libiec61883 0.1.0
tarball and I ran into the same "File size limit exceeded" issue. I'm
now thinking it's not a filesystem issue but a header file definition
setting the file size limit to 32 bits. I did some digging around and I
may need to enable largefile via a CFLAG option.

Yes, normally, but I have heard tell of nVidia setups where it still
loads nVidia even if you do that. The actual X server is an
executable usually linked to "X" (note the cap) someplace like /usr/
X11R6/bin (seems like everybody puts it in a different place.

That should be "nv" not "xv", I'm assuming that was a typo. "xv" is
something completely different.

My guess is that if commenting out "load glx" does not work then
loading "nv" instead of nvidia will not work either, but you never know.

This didn't work for me. I'm running a straight-up 0.18.1 backend. It
looks like this was compiled with some other branch. Version claims
"0.18.2, MythTV project, www.mythtv.org"

However, your 0.18.1 without plugins works ok for me.

This is a timely thread for me.

I've monitored this list for a while, and the two conflicting, generally
prevailing, opinions I've picked up are summarized neatly in this thread as:

- The 150/250/500 exhibit indistinguishable picture quality
- The 250 has noticeably better picture quality than the 150

I've just deployed my first myth (FE/BE) box, with much joy,
congratulations and success. Two things have become immediately obvious
to us:

- We need a second tuner
- Out of the box, the picture quality from my PVR-150 system doesn't
equal broadcast quality (of my SD analog cable system) for "fast moving"
TV, most notably sports. Emphasis on "out of the box", since I've done
almost nothing to try to improve the quality.

So I'm trying to learn more than I ever thought I'd need to know about
how to tune the picture. I've got a lot to learn: interlacing, filters,
and a slew of other knobs and buttons to tweak.

In the meantime, I'm anxious to order a second tuner, since we suddenly
have all kinds of conflicts between live TV and programs we want to
record, that we never had before.

Sorry for the long-winded background.

Bottom line, I too would be very glad to hear more input on the quality
of the various cards available, and keenly interested in comments
relative to "fast moving" scenes.

I'd also be very happy to discover the definitive "How to tune your
PVR-150 based MythTV system for Dummies" reference! As usual with this
stuff (and it *is* both the allure and the curse), it seems like you've
got to dig down to bedrock before you can work your way back up to the
surface and figure out which settings to tweak. I sure wish there were
"recipes" with cross referenced background material.

Cheers,
john

Yes. You also need to have dev-util/subversion installed to fetch the files
(but that should be obvious).

Another consideration is that once you upgrade, you won't be able to downgrade
to 0.18 without dumping the database and restoring it from a backup made before
the upgrade. (Doing this, of course, will lose any activity since the
upgrade.) The behind-the-scenes tools that upgrade the database schema from
one version to the next are one-way.

I've also made another change to the ebuilds. The MythTV ebuild had an
override with which you could download and build a particular revision, but the
various plugins didn't have this capability. I've pushed that override into
the mythtv-svn eclass, so your add-ons will come from the same revision. Add
MYTHTV_SVN_REVISION=$num to /etc/make.conf and all of the ebuilds will pull
revision $num. Leave it out and you'll get whatever is most recent.

Most likely.

I don't know what the fees are for CableCARD (I
couldn't find them in the price list), but I would
guess somewhere between $50,000 to $100,000 based on
the other prices (which have come down from previous
years).

Check out the application fees yourself (no

I'm fairly certain the problem isn't with my display. (480i content

[mythtv-users] 1080i content and xv

2006-01-11 Thread Chris Ribe
Can anybody out there playback 1080i content (captured over Firewire
from a DCT-62xx) to a VGA monitor using xv?  I have tried three
different NVidia driver versions, (7667,7676, and 8174) and all three
exhibit slightly different versions of the same problem.  When
playing back 1080i content, the image is split into two - like having
double vision.  It is almost as if one field is being played on
the left side of the frame while the next plays on the right
side.

The problem is duplicated whether I use VLC, mplayer, or MythTV for
playback.  I can get normal playback if I use the " -vo x11"
option with mplayer, but then my CPU can't keep up.

My specs:

- P4 630
- FC4 w/  smp kernel.
- DCT-620x Firewire capture
- old 32MB GeForce3 video card

If anybody has had experience with this problem, any feedback would be
greatly appreciated.  Searching has so far yeilded few results.

Thank You,
Chris

[mythtv-users] Slightly OT: receiver input buzzing/humming

How bad is "bad"? :) I mean, there's definately noise between the
computer and the receiver. Will I hear random bits being flipped (I
assume that noise will cause SOME flippage)? Although I suppose
there's some kind of parity or error correction built in to the
protocol...

If the hum is enough to flip bits (and I doubt it would be), you'd
either hear nothing at all (if the protocol suppresses packets with
errors) or perhaps fuzz (like clipped square waves or a fuzzbox on a
guitar) or perhaps white noise (hiss). Or all kinds of other things.
But it's very unlikely to sound like hum. If you take a random MP3
(say) or WAV file and start flipping 1% of the bits, what do you hear?

> supposedly the -only- source of ground interconnection, then going
> to an optical interconnect might help, but that's a fragile
> solution.

What makes it fragile? Is it because of the point above, that I
might be close to enough bit flipping that I hear garbage?

It's fragile because if the only thing keeping the system working is
keeping two dissimilar grounds separate, then all it takes is one wire
between two components that didn't used to be connected to possibly
connect those grounds and give you your hum back. That might amount
to adding hardware, or changing what outlet something's plugged into,
or even someone touching the cases of both components simultaneously.
There are loads of sneak paths, and it only takes one. Better to
eliminate the problem at the source than depend on isolating grounds.

> problem is new, or he's just started noticing it. My guess, if

> something was recently changed in the hardware configuration

I *think* it's new. If it's not, then it's definately worse than it
used to be. And yes, there were *major* changes---I got a new TV,
and got rid of the VCR and DVD (mythtv makes them obsolete).

Then lots of things might have changed in your cabling, and maybe a
bad shield that was papered-over by some -other-, good shield (hence
good ground) being connected between two things isn't connected any
more---so maybe the problem is that you used to have a better ground
connection between one place and another, and now you don't.

Or maybe the physical strain of unplugging a cable or plugging it back
in broke a marginal solder joint in a shield somewhere. You see the
point---you're going to have to start swapping cables & so forth
around and see if you can get the hum to move around or vanish.

(You might also try turning off the TV and seeing if you still hear
hum from the stereo. Instead of being induced ambient powerline hum,
you -could- be getting hum from the flyback transformer or something
else coupling into a signal line somewhere that runs too close to the
TV (and has a bad shield). This used to be an issue with power supply
transformers, but modern electronics doesn't use transformers in its
power supplies any more. And if this TV is in fact not a CRT, there's
no flyback, so that's not it either...)

Hmmm... it seems like my sound card is unusually quiet. Part of the
reason I even noticed this problem is that I have to turn up the
receiver louder than I do for anything else when using my HTPC
(mythtv, xmms, whatever). Even with PCM cranked, I still have to
turn the volume more than I usually do.

It's possible you're just hearing hum from the soundcard that no
amount of cabling can get rid of---the card itself just might be
hummy, and you never noticed it at lower volumes. I'd try swapping
cables first, then any other sound output your machine can generate,
including perhaps a different soundcard if you don't have any other
audio outputs available. (You might also make sure that aslamixer
claims that all your masters are up, and so forth.)

> Here here! I second that.,.. can -F be added after an array is created?

The -F option isn't "added" to the array. It's a mdadm run-time
argument that tells it to check the array for errors. The -F option
isn't useful (and may even be illegal) during the array creation phase.

You would typically either create a cron job that does
/sbin/mdadm -F -s -1
periodically, or more typically you would have a system start-up script
that runs
/sbin/mdadm -F -s -f -i /var/run/mdadm.pid -m root

The first version tells mdadm to check the array only once, and output
the status on stdout (which cron then emails to the crontab owner). The
second version tells mdadm to daemonize (-f) using the specified pidfile
(-i /path/to/pidfile) and explicity provides an email address (-m root)
for the resulting status messages.

In both cases, the -s option tells mdadm to look for *all* RAID devices
even if they aren't in the config file.

In addition to which, many generic cases have more PCI blanks than the
mobo will need, and you can put the extra connections in those empty
slots. The newer AGP design has also moved the AGP slot farther away
from PCI slot #1, so most cases now have a usable blank between them.

website which sell you modified dish boxes. There is a firewire output
port which you can use for recording purposes.

QAM tuning for Fusion lite works fine with
Myth.  You most likely will not pull ESPNHD from it though as that is not a
broadcast channel and is encrypted.    Only way that is happening is with a
CableCARD tuner and that will probably be so DRMified that Myth support seems
unlikely.

In my embedded systems class in college, my professor had this great
analogy of why you ground signal and power separately: think of
indoor plumbing, and how the toilet output is generally routed
separately from every other drain. In the case of a backup, you
DON'T want stuff from the toilet coming up!

Pre-FC4 I ended up doing the custom nfsroot capable kernel compile
thing because the RH/FC stuff was pretty much useless, but makes a lot
of extra work overall. Recently I did have success using
system-config-netboot on FC4, so they seem to have fixed at least the
major issues. Sorry I don't have any config stuff left, had to scrap
it to rearrange some hardware, but at least there is hope!

Can't get xawtv to run, but tvtime (FC#3) works like a charm.

Truly it seems as if my capture card is not receiving a signal.
Everything else seems to be great: listing are fine, channels change,
etc. Oddly I even occasionally get a picture if I run tvtime prior to
running Mythtv. The picture is only of the last station viewed with
Tvtime.

You must not have small children. My power and reset button just make a
clicking sound - cause I disconnected the wires to it! Even my littlest figured
out
how to hold the button for 4 seconds to power it off.

It turns on by IR remote, and shuts down cleanly by IR remote. If I have to
force
it off, I pull the plug.

Also, mythfrontend runs from a script which starts it in a loop. So if it ever
crashes
(which it rarely ever does), or if someone accidentally exits out of it (more
likely), it
starts right back up.

This really may not be complete. I'm doing this mostly off the top of
my head and this is my experience with mythburn CVS installing on
Fedora Core 3 as of about 3 weeks ago.
This is the howto I loosely followed when installing.

http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=MythTVBurn_Scripts_HowTo

1) ProjectX .82 ( You may be able to use .90 but youll have to muck
around with the mythburn scripts.
2) Xvfb
3) dvdauthor
4) mjpegtools
5) ImageMagic

For projectx, I made a shell script called /usr/local/bin/projectx
containing the following:
#!/bin/bash
java -jar /usr/local/bin/projectx_dir/ProjectX.jar $@

The projectx_dir above is just a directory where I untarred projectx .82 into.

I followed the instructions on pulling down the latest from CVS, but
instead of mkdir /myth/mythburn, I just did mkdir /myth because I had
trouble with the install script looking for files it couldnt find.

Thats all I remember now.

Not an answer but another question, I'm afraid. From what you say am I
right in thinking that the mythtranscode planned for 0.19 allows you
to transcode large MPEG2 --> small MPEG2? That would be great as
0.18.1 doesn't let you do that.

I have had very recent build of Ubuntu booting diskless with an NFS

post it to the list. I cant see why Fedora would be much different. If
I recall correctly, I did have to build a custom kernel with a certain

[mythtv-users] SVN mythtranscode

2006-01-11 Thread Robin Gilks
Greetings

Does Mythtranscode from SVN still support mpeg2 -> mpeg4 (xvid)
compression or is it mpeg2 -> mpeg2 lossless only now. I ask as using the
-m switch (which should turn ON lossless) creates a file the same size as
without it. I'd expect a larger file with it.

I STILL can't find a way of setting the profile of an EXISTING recording
to determine how it gets transcoded using the 'x' command from the
playback edit screen.

Thanks...

As

Eh? If he's sending digital information down the coax, then no amount
of ground hum will be audible at the receiver, until the hum is so bad
it starts flipping bits in the data stream (at which point, he'll hear
either silence or godawful artifacts, depending on the protocol---but
it sure won't be 60 Hz hum).

Sure, if the problem is ground loops, then anything which can
spuriously tie grounds together is a problem. But given the
randomly-interconnected nature of computer hardware (much less stereo
hardware), trying for a true single-point ground as it done in, e.g.,
lab instrumentation amps is infeasible. If the coax is supposedly the
-only- source of ground interconnection, then going to an optical
interconnect might help, but that's a fragile solution.

It's ambiguous from the original poster's comment whether the problem
is new, or he's just started noticing it. My guess, if the latter, is
that the shield on some cable got damaged, or something was recently
changed in the hardware configuration elsewhere (new component? new
cable?), and certainly replacing cables is the easier & quickest way
to debug that. If he has another way of producing audio, I'd also try
substituting that at the end of the cable, once the cable is known
good. (After all, it -could- be that some filter cap in the sound
board on the computer blew or is getting leaky; such things do
happen.)

While experimenting with tying chassis grounds together might be
interesting, not all components use that as their signal-ground
reference (though most do). It might make more sense to try, just as
an experiment, putting all components on a single outlet strip, so you
know they're on the same phase and circuit. (I've seen strange currents
induced on so-called power grounds when different phases meet through
equipment, especially in older structures with poor wiring [which is
one reason why certain lab and audio gear keep chassis ("power") and
signal grounds rigorously separate], and it's always possible that a
ground or connection somewhere has gotten ohmic and therefore there's
a voltage difference around that, in theory, can't exist.)

When I use the fast forward, rewind, skip forward, or skip backward

this just a plain bug or is there some "technique" I need to learn in

bmayland (CC'ed) started a thread on 15 June 2005 showing dramatic
differences in sharpness between the two cards, with the 250 winning.
He also said he'd do some more experimentation; Bryan, did you come
up any any further results? (I'm particularly interested in RF-in,
but I also use composite-in.)

Also, ivtv can't do NTSC sliced VBI closed-captioning on the 150/500
yet, because Hans and the rest of the ivtv crew haven't been able to
reverse-engineer that part so far. The 250/350 do it just fine.

(If the sharpness and CC differences between the 250/350 series and
the 150/500 series get resolved, then my next purchase will be a 500,
but until then, I'm going to waste PCI slots and get 250's since
they'll work better for me. Assuming, of course, they're still being

I'm running a P3-500 for a backend. It can record both tuners of a
PVR-500 and stream a recording to a frontend all at the same time with
no problem. You should have no problem with a single PVR-150. The PVR

You've got the purpose of CableLabs confused. When
they're not accepting kickbacks, charging a fortune
for product certification, and constantly changing
their specifications without incrementing version
numbers, they are supposed to be the unified voice of
the cable operators. They have nothing to do with the
content producers.

IPTV is not subject to CableLabs approval, at least
not in it's current incarnation. In fact, nothing is
really subject to CableLabs approval (see the number
of uncertified DOCSIS 1.0 cable modems about five
years ago), but if you don't get your products
CableLabs certified, then you likely won't be allowed
to bid on contracts put forth by the cable operators.

(Yes, I dislike CableLabs, and I don't hide it. In my
view, they really are an incompetent and corrupt
organization.)

That said, open source hardware or software will never
get CableLabs approval. CableLabs reserves the right
to revoke encryption keys on devices if they are
compromised (and I'm surprised they didn't revoke
Motorola's keys when a bunch of their modems were
cracked - but, Motorola is one of the key players in
CableLabs).

CableLabs is now much more open than it used to be -
previously the submission documents required
membership to view, but they are now freely available
on the CableLabs website. These documents show some
of the requirements for security that CableCARD will
have to meet:
http://www.opencable.com/downloads/Host_2.0_DCAA.pdf
http://www.opencable.com/downloads/CHILA.pdf

>From the second document:
As to each of the Host Devices made under this
Agreement, Licensee covenants to CableLabs as follows:
(i) The Host Device, at the time manufactured,
contains no integrated circuit, ROM, RAM, software or
other device or functionality that:
  (1) enables copying or recording of Controlled
Content, other
than as permitted by the Compliance Rules or
  (2) interferes with or disables the ability of a
Cable Operator to communicate with or disable a
CableCARD or services being transmitted through a
CableCARD.
(ii) At the time of manufacture, it will maintain
control of content copies consistent with copy control
instructions or the encryption mode indicator bits
transmitted with digital signals as specified in the
OpenCable Specifications.
(iii) At the time of manufacture, it is designed to
effectively frustrate tampering and reverse
engineering directed towards defeating copy protection
requirements in accordance with the Robustness Rules.
(iv) At the time of manufacture, it will not transmit
or decode
Controlled Content received from the cable television
transmission without proper authorization from the
Cable Operator.
(v) As used in this section 9.2(c), “at the time of
manufacture” shall mean at the time of manufacture
of the Host Device and shall also include, but is not
limited to, any subsequent modifications, upgrades,
downloads, modules, plug-ins, or attachments to such
Host Device made by or at the direction of Licensee or
its Affiliates, or otherwise specifically promoted,
marketed, distributed by or at the direction of
Licensee or its Affiliates.
(vi) Licensee shall not service any licensed product
that it determines to have been modified after
manufacture to be non-Compliant.
<< End of CableLabs document>>

So, in short, Open Source will get the big red
"DENIED" stamp on CableCARD. Our only hope is reverse
engineering outside of North America where the patents
and DMCA don't apply.
