Hey,

In the past couple of days mythtv-frontend-0.18.1-116.rhfc4.at has
locked up on me 3 or 4 times during playback of recorded shows.
This is the first time I have seen this behaviour and each time I was
attempting to playback recorded movies at least 2 hours in length..
The shows were recorded with ivtv4.0

The only recent change is starting mythfronted from an init script at

restarted it as my regular user and the bahaviour persisted.

Re: [mythtv-users] I'm getting TV-Out Flicker

2006-01-01 Thread Allan McIntosh

Jim Duda wrote:

When you say flicker, do you mean the playback stutters or pauses?

The playback doesn't stutter or pause. What I see are white lines
shooting across the image. The lines are broken up. Best I can
describe it as small white checker boxes randomly shooting across the
screen. You can see the image clearly, the white checkerboxes are
just very distracting. It's almost like what one would call "static"
on an analog TV signal.

What resolution are you recording at? I found since ivtv 3.8 when
recording at 640x480 I would occasionally see a mangled frame.

There are links to an example mpeg and screen capture here:

http://ivtvdriver.org/pipermail/ivtv-devel/2005-December/001432.html

I strictly use 720x480 and have not seen any mangled frames since. I
am currently running ivtv 4.0, I have not upgraded to 4.1 to see if
there is any change.

Hmm, does this describe the behaviour you're seeing?

Re: [mythtv-users] I'm getting TV-Out Flicker

2005-12-31 Thread Allan McIntosh

Jim Duda wrote:

I have a box which I use to run freevo. Fedora-core 4 running a
2.6.14 kernel. Freevo works fine. I've been playing with Mythtv
because it's so sexy looking and I'm thinking about switching. I'm
using the SIS driver (sis_drv.o).

When I play videos from freevo, using mplayer, or xine, the videos
play just fine using the XV video overlay. I can play them from
within freevo or outside freevo and the video is clear.

However, when I'm not running freevo on the box, the videos from
mplayer introduce flicker on the tv-out display..
mplayer -fs -vo xv -ao oss .mpg; created by pvr-350 with
ivtv drivers.

I only get flicker when:

a) I use the -fs option
b) freevo is not running

If I run mplayer -fs when freevo is not running, I get flicker.

So, it appears that freevo does something to X? or the video driver
(I'm using sis_drv.o) to resolve the flicker on the tv-out?

Does anyone have any ideas which might explain the flicker? I realize
that "flicker" is hard to describe.

When you say flicker, do you mean the playback stutters or pauses?

I'm not able to cut-over to mythtv until I figure out the flicker issue.

I know the Titles are the same I was just commenting on the fact that
they are different as one is House Type "movie" Catagory Drama and one
House type "Series" (SH688359) category Mystery.

Doesn't sound false to me. You asked to record "House" on any time,
any channel. That's exactly what it did. :)

Actually, when I looked at the code I realized a -DNEW_LIB_EXIF=1 would
force the use of the newer libexif.

So the fix:
mythplugins]$ ./configure --enable-all --enable-exif

Would someone that can successfully build the current
release-0-18-fixes svn tell me what version of

libexif they have installed?

I build it with libexif 0.5.12.

Cool thanks. I am using FC4 and 0.5.12 is the version in atrpms.
However, I ended up with a newer version from release repository.

I hope downgrading doesn't break anything else.

Re: [mythtv-users] Multiple time zone scheduling question

2005-12-11 Thread Allan McIntosh

A few responses place inline

I see. This is an entirely different topic than your first post
even hints at. You're not getting 3 episodes per day for "Grey's
Anatomy" are you?

I agree, the Simpson's situation was different from the Grey's Anatomy
but it only became apparent through our discussion.

So now on to this new topic:

Perhaps what I am looking for is "Find and record an origional
airing" or something.

That's a duplicate matching option rather than a recording type.
In the recording options "Scheduling Options", the item for where
to look for dups has "Record new episodes only" which is normally
in the first 14 days from the original air date.

Okay, but I would like to include other showings at other times or
from other stations but only today when the new episodes come out.

But "today" isn't significant, "new episodes" is.

A, where  a == paradigm shift.

For example, we
know that Survivor has new episodes on Thursday, right? So if you
made a rule to just record Survivor on Thursday's only, depending
on when you read this, you may have already missed the one time only
season finale Sunday night.

Yes, yes, I have been nipped by this situation before. Who would have
known a grown female could get so upset because America's Next top model
didn't record

http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-12.html#ss12.5

program.title LIKE 'Survivor: %'
AND DAYNAME(program.starttime) = 'Thursday'

This would record any time or channel on Thursday but it's the
wrong solution. We could also create a rule to only record on
the originalairdate and that may catch a new MythBusters at 9pm
for it's first airing but if there were a conflict, it couldn't
choose the 2am rebroadcast (next day's date) or any other showing
ever.

Ahhh, thank you Bruce. I feel so much better. Thank you for the
discussion this was very enlightening. This makes absolute sense.

Re: [mythtv-users] Multiple time zone scheduling question

2005-12-11 Thread Allan McIntosh

I have a satallite (ExpressVu) which offers many channels in many
time zones too choose from when recording. For example, typically I
record Grey's Anatomy every sunday at 7pm using "Record this program
in this time slot every week."

Why? To what end? Record anytime on any channel and it will grab
the first convenient showing of each episode.

I built my first mythbox this fall, therefore practically every episode
of everyshow has never been recorded.
I tried that with the Simpson's today and myth planned to record a 3
year old episode at 5pm instead of the episode at 8pm with today as the
origional air date. Not mention 3 episodes a day from here on. I really
only want to record one episode a week, but chosing " Find and record
one showing of this title each week." may end up recording an old show
on tuesday or today for that matter. Not sunday's new episode.

Perhaps what I am looking for is "Find and record an origional airing"
or something.

Is "Record this program in this time slot every week." actually
"Record this program in this time slot on this channel every week."
or will myth find and record on any channel this time slot ?

Actually, it's on this station so any channel with the same
callsign. IOW if I had a Weekslot for "The Apprentice" on KVBC,
it could use analog 3 KVBC or digital 123 KVBC.

For most shows, new episodes appear on certain days of the week.

So what? There is no reason to use undue restraint. The only
reason to use a timeslot is to avoid considering other showings
at other time or from other stations (The Simpsons at 8pm Sunday's
on FOX for example).

Okay, but I would like to include other showings at other times or from
other stations but only today when the new episodes come out.

it be hard to add record option like "Find and record one showing of
this title this day each week."? This would also be nice because

kFindDaily and kFindWeekly were implemented long ago and are most
useful for shows with multiple broadcasts but no descriptions or
inconsistent descriptive info.

[mythtv-users] Multiple time zone scheduling question

2005-12-11 Thread Allan McIntosh

Hey,

I have a satallite (ExpressVu) which offers many channels in many
time zones too choose from when recording. For example, typically I
record Grey's Anatomy every sunday at 7pm using "Record this program in
this time slot every week." This way we may watch it earlier than 10pm.
Tonight however the 7pm showing is not on and I had to manually record
the 10pm showing. " At times, some shows air on as many as 4 channels as
much 3 or 4 times in a 5 hour time slot.

Is "Record this program in this time slot every week." actually "Record
this program in this time slot on this channel every week." or will myth
find and record on any channel this time slot ?

For most shows, new episodes appear on certain days of the week. Would
it be hard to add record option like "Find and record one showing of
this title this day each week."? This would also be nice because
sometimes shows air at 2am on the same day which would be mean this
option could capture the shows much sooner for me.

I would like to avoid creating many recording schedules for the same
show if possible.

Are recording options based in the code or are they database entries?

Thanks,

Re: [mythtv-users] OverScan / Vertical alignment

2005-11-08 Thread Allan McIntosh

There's also possibly a need for a setup screen to enable people to properly set their
TV's brightness/contrast controls (or TV output).. This would include signals like
PLUGE (for correct brightness & contrast) & colour bars (for correct colour
temperature/saturation). This would be very simple to add into a setup menu, although
calling external screen setup programs (e.g. nvidia-settings) might give rise to other
issues (such as which program to call since not everybody uses the same graphics
hardware).

That would be really cool integrated tv calibration tools. mpeg-2 test
patterns for white level, blackness, sharpness. That would be slick.

I use Avia's DVD for this.

Re: [mythtv-users] OverScan / Vertical alignment

2005-11-07 Thread Allan Mcintosh

Can any one suggest a way to move projected image down on TV-Out for
playback of recordings and videos?

I think the crop/zoom/displace stuff in Myth only applies to what
portion of the recording Myth will play, not where on the TV it will be
played. To move the actual output around on your TV you'd need to fuss
with the modelines. If I ever get my frontends working again (they're
both borked) I'll try using the "use separate resolution for playback"
switch and specify slightly different modelines so that the X gui
shrinks a bit (the current modeline pushes the display too far to the
right) and the playback window expands a bit.

I record and playback via SVideo. I have noticed that play back of
recordings and videos don't fill the entire screen as mythfrontend
does. OverScan is full throttle. I have driver overscan at *max* in
xorg.conf and in ~/.nvidia-settings-rc=TVOverScan[TV-0]=21. Many of
mythfronted tabs and buttons are off the screen but Video and recording
playback could still use overscan increase to hide the edges. I have not
touched MythFrontend overscan.

[mythtv-users] OverScan / Vertical alignment

2005-11-05 Thread Allan McIntosh

Hey,

Can any one suggest a way to move projected image down on TV-Out for
playback of recordings and videos?

I am using nvidia driver with my FX5200 TV-Out. I have raised the
OverScan value of the Nvidia driver in xorg.conf and
~/.nvidia-settings-rc. I still have about a 1.5 - 2.0 cm strip across
the bottom of the screen I could hide by raising the over scan.
However, I have raised it so much I feel if I keep going I will be
missing some of the intended image. I tried adjusting the Scan
displacement (Y)
in play back settings but it does not seem to move the played back
images at all.

I really only care about play back of videos and recordings, I only use
tv playback for making adjustments, debugging and soforth.

What about xorg.conf:"ViewPortx y" ?

I solved it on my setup by editing /etc/sysconfig/lircd:
# Options to lircd
LIRCD_OPTIONS="-d /dev/lirc0"

This then gets lircd to look at the already existing /dev/lirc0 rather
than the missing /dev/lirc

I built myth 0.18.1.20050510-1 by hand from scratch

Also, what are the exact crashing symptoms? Entire box locks up?

It's always a silent backend crash. The majority of the crashes
occured right when myth was about to begin recording...

I would see something along the lines of :

cardid: 1, sourceid 1

Today, however backend crashed while my girlfriend was watching a
recording and I was scheduling a recording through mythweb. The pvr
was not running at all...
