Mythfilldatabase inserts your program details into the MySQL database. You need to first run a separate grabber (usually called tv_grab_xx where xx is your country) to download the data in XML format which mythfilldatabase uploads. As it has to log onto MySQL then, yes, you do need a username password. I think this is usually maintained in a file called mysql.txt in your .mythtv directory. It fails with the error message No such device or address when trying to determine file system size. I know knoppix will fail if the hard drive is not /dev/hda and methinks that is the problem. My CD-Rom is connected as IDE1 (the only choice) and my hard drive as SATA1. How can I make my hard drive recognizable? I don't think you can. Knoppix is not a 'real' distribution. It's a cut down version of Debian I believe, and it makes it very easy to try it out, and get a quick install up and running for most people. The problem of expecting /dev/hda is due to one of the shortcuts/assumptions it makes. Someone may know of a workaround, but if they don't, I'd suggest getting a recent copy of a full distribution, like Debian itself, or, what I am using, Mandriva 2005LE. Mandriva has no problems whatsoever using /dev/sda (the SCSI/SATA device name) for installation. I think there are a couple of issues here... 1) I think you mean KnoppMyth not Knoppix. Knoppix is a live Linux CD. I.e. it allows you to run a full version of Linux on any PC booting straight from a CD, no install on the harddisk is needed. This is useful to try out Linux without wreaking your Windows install and also useful for rescuing PC's that have been damaged by viruses, user error, harddisk failure etc. Knoppix is indeed based on Debian Linux, but is far from cut down, it has better hardware detection/drivers and has over 2GB of software compressed onto the CD. KnoppMyth is version of Knoppix which has had MythTV (and a whole bunch of other stuff) added to it. You boot with the CD and it will wipes the harddrive on the PC, installs a Debian Linux operating system and then installs all of MythTV. In many cases it will leave a 100% working MythTV box when it's finished. In others it will need a small amount of tweaking, but nothing like the work that has to be done with the likes of FedoraCore using Jarod Wilsons excellent guide. 2) The current version of KnoppMyth R5A16, assumes that you have large harddisk as your IDE Primary Master device and a CD/DVD/DVDR as your IDE Secondary Master. The partitioning and setup is specifically geared to this. As you have a SATA drive, the automatic install cannot work. End of story. There is a expert mode available in the menu, and there are people who have managed to use this, check the forums at http://mysettopbox.tv ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] Hardware Platforms
Compaq has always sucked and they have always bee a little proprietary. I gave up on them in 1987. Only when I was forced to support Compaq for a client did I even touch one after that. If only Carly had talked to me... :-) Important question: Is it necessary to configure the BIOS in some cases for Myth? It was decent value, but the machine is not real fast. The BIOS is not configurable, the memory runs with way too many waits (slow), the motherboard graphics (VIA Unichrome) are very slow (esp. compared with the Intel Extreme Mobo graphics) and suck at running the X screensaver GL stuff.I think I'm back to putting my own stuff together again. Re: [mythtv-users] Hardware Platforms
Is heat a big issue? Since everything else is standard, I would think the TV Tuner cards are causing heat problems - is this so? I would have thought noise would be more of a problem. Also, was it not possible to install heat sinks in the Silverstone LC02? P.S. What is WAF? I wanted something completely fanless, and that would not look out of place in the living room. I looked long and hard at the Silverstone LC02 as a compromise (not half-width, but definately WAF), but in the end have embarked on building a case from scratch, using a couple of hefty heatsinks as the side panels, using heatpipes salvaged from a passive VGA cooler kit to direct the heat away from the CPU/northbridge. Maybe I should start selling them commercially if the first model works well :) Richard On Tue, 2005-05-10 at 18:23, Anil Gupte wrote: My project to create my own MythTV box has run into some trouble from the boss. Re: [mythtv-users] Best O/S
Thanx everyone for your advice. Sounds like Knoppmyth is the way to go. Does it have everything one might need for development as well? We want to eventually write modules for custom applications on it. BTW, I assume MythTV is GPL. Does that mean anything we write as an add-on have to be under GPL? There is nothing to compile/recompile. You just put a CD into the computer you want to install it on and let it do the rest. It will not install anything that myth doesn't need, thus saving alot of space and memory. www.mysettopbox.tv i'll second this. KnoppMyth is an excellent distro for someone starting out with Myth. you should feel fairly at home with this distro since you've used Debian; KnoppMyth is based on Knoppix, which is based on Debian. easy install, great support and resources (mysettopbox.com). if you're using fairly standard hardware it's a no muss, no fuss solution. ;) --- Anil Gupte [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi: I am a newbie at MythTV. Where can I get it? And do I have to piece it to gether or can I buy a complete system?
