[mythtv-users] Changing the schedule

How do I change my information, if my channel line-up in incorrect? I seem to

[mythtv-users] Program Guide is overlaid on Live Video

2005-09-27 Thread Anil Gupte

Ihave an interesting
problem. When I select "Watch TV" I see a Program Guide which is
ghosted/overlaid on the live TV. After a few seconds, the PG disappears
and I can see the video clearly. However, when I try to change the
channel, the program guide appears and I can scroll through it - as if it is in
the record programs menu. If I choose a program it appears to switch to
that menu.

Earlier, before I had rebooted the system, I could not change the channel
at all. I have not yet configured my remote - I am just using my
keyboard.

Any suggestions, please?

It sounds like you have the "Show the program guide when starting

You might want to check out a VNC program and connect that

To navigate the pull-downs you use right and left arrow which takes
you to the next or previous item. They don't actually pull down.

1. Use a mouse in the MythTV user and setup menus?

Yes, it's possible. Install the vnc-server package. In xorg.conf add
this line to the Section Module part:
Load vnc

That will let you connect from another box running a vnc client.

2. Use a dual screen setup, where I can do the stuff on the monitor and

You could press Alt-F1 to switch to a console. Or Alt-F2 to Alt-F6 to
get more consoles up. Or, I think some video drivers (such as nVidia)
allow you to do that. Have a look at
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-6106/README.txt which
may explain how to do it if you have an nVidia card.

3. Can I set up a telnet server on the myth box? If so, how.

Yes - better to use openssh-server. Google to find out how to do that.

Mythfilldatabase inserts your program details into the MySQL database.
You need to first run a separate grabber (usually called tv_grab_xx
where xx is your country) to download the data in XML format which
mythfilldatabase uploads. As it has to log onto MySQL then, yes, you
do need a username password.

I think this is usually maintained in a file called mysql.txt in your
.mythtv directory. You need to make sure the username and password are
correct in there, I think. For example, mine says:

DBHostName=localhost
DBUserName=mythtv
DBPassword=
DBName=mythconverg
DBType=QMYSQL3

I just started to install MythTV using the Knoppix distro. It fails with
the error message

No such device or address when trying to determine file system size.

I know knoppix will fail if the hard drive is not /dev/hda and methinks that
is the problem. My CD-Rom is connected as IDE1 (the only choice) and my
hard drive as SATA1. How can I make my hard drive recognizable?

I don't think you can. Knoppix is not a 'real' distribution. It's a cut down
version of Debian I believe, and it makes it very easy to try it out, and get
a quick install up and running for most people. The problem of expecting
/dev/hda is due to one of the shortcuts/assumptions it makes. Someone may
know of a workaround, but if they don't, I'd suggest getting a recent copy of
a full distribution, like Debian itself, or, what I am using, Mandriva
2005LE. Mandriva has no problems whatsoever using /dev/sda (the SCSI/SATA
device name) for installation.

I think there are a couple of issues here...

1) I think you mean KnoppMyth not Knoppix. Knoppix is a live Linux CD. I.e. it
allows you to run a full version of Linux on any PC booting straight from a
CD, no install on the harddisk is needed. This is useful to try out Linux
without wreaking your Windows install and also useful for rescuing PC's that
have been damaged by viruses, user error, harddisk failure etc. Knoppix is
indeed based on Debian Linux, but is far from cut down, it has better hardware
detection/drivers and has over 2GB of software compressed onto the CD.
KnoppMyth is version of Knoppix which has had MythTV (and a whole bunch of
other stuff) added to it. You boot with the CD and it will wipes the harddrive
on the PC, installs a Debian Linux operating system and then installs all of
MythTV. In many cases it will leave a 100% working MythTV box when it's
finished. In others it will need a small amount of tweaking, but nothing like
the work that has to be done with the likes of FedoraCore using Jarod Wilsons
excellent guide.

2) The current version of KnoppMyth R5A16, assumes that you have large
harddisk as your IDE Primary Master device and a CD/DVD/DVDR as your IDE
Secondary Master. The partitioning and setup is specifically geared to this.
As you have a SATA drive, the automatic install cannot work. End of story.
There is a expert mode available in the menu, and there are people who have
managed to use this, check the forums at http://mysettopbox.tv

In fact most DVRs nowadays, especially TiVo are Linux based. MS is just not
robust enough - can you imagine a DVR that needs to be rebooted everyday?

By the way, speaking of GPL, what constitutes changes to pre-existing GPL

In fact the problem I have is that I cannot find an older P3 or P2 chip or even

because I am convinced anything more is overkill. It is interesting how Intel

not to let it affect the prices of the new chips.

For DVB (records stream directly to disk) and ivtv (PVR card encodes
video and audio) it'll be more than fine, as these cards work with
minimal CPU power. The only problem I can see is perhaps 1080i HDTV or
if you're doing excessive CPU-based tasks at the same time.

(Like Phill, I'm also running a 2.4 CelD with DVB and ivtv cards)

For less heat and noise a Celeron Northwood would be better. Starmicro has
Celeron 2.6 Northwoods for $65. Granted, it's a socket 478 chip so if you've
already purchased your motherboard my suggestion is useless.

This info is definitely worth taking heed of. I couldn't easily source
a Northwood for my system, but they have a significantly lower thermal
rating than the newer Prescott chips, meaning you can run a noticeably
cooler and quieter system. After modding my Pundit-R system though
with new fans for the CPU and PSU though, it's still very quiet.

fine into the case, but I cannot put in my Hauppauge PVR-350 into it, because
the card is too large to fit under the shelf that carries the hard drive.

Any suggestions on either buying a riser card so I can put the Hauppauge
card in sideways, or buying a motherboard that provides a cleaner solution (i.e.
a motherboard with a sideways slot that will accommodate the Hauppauge card
sideways?

[mythtv-users] New Country

2005-07-03 Thread Anil Gupte
Looking for expertise in MythTV and XMLTV setup for a new country. We are
setting up MythTV in India and having a heck of a time. Initially, we are
setting it up using Knoppix, although we will recompile from scratch eventually.
We just want to get it up and running first. If someone (some team) has set up
a new country, including writing a grabber, discovering frequencies and all
that, we sure could use your help and/or advice. We have lots of Linux and C
expertise and we can probably find Perl skills (for XMLTV). If you know of
someone and they are not on this list or not on this list anymore, please
forward this request to them.

We will really, really appreciate it.

/lib/modules/2.6.11.7-chw-4/ivtv/tveeprom.ko

Where can I get tveeprom?

[mythtv-users] Knoppmyth Files

2005-06-20 Thread Anil Gupte
We are installing using KnoppMyth on a standard Pentium machine with a Hauppauge
PVR350 and have not had much luck. We tried following Jarod's guide but it is
designed for RedHat, and the files are not the same. For example, we don't have
a /etc/modprobe.conf What resources are there to try to translate Jarod for
KnoppMyth? Any advice appreciated.

2005-05-13 Thread Anil Gupte
I thought the opposite was true. I read from people's posts that they dropped
$800-1000 on building a system. I can get pre-built PCs (from Dell for example)
for $300. Only, I cannot find anything that is aesthetically living room
oriented. However, I know there is stuff out there that is $600 - I just don't
know who the manufacturer is (I got quotes for a system with a prorieatary PVR
software already on it).

Since the expensive, readymade route is where you want to go, have you
considered any of these:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/generic_category.do?storeName=computer_storelanding=desktopscategory=hp_deccatLevel=1
I understand (from your first post) you haven't built a computer in
ten years. Well things are different now and alot easier, and any one
of the cases people on this thread have mentioned are perfect
foundations for an awesome, high WAF system. I would at least consider
building your own system before dropping the cash on a prebuilt model.
Just my $0.02...

Compaq has always sucked and they have always bee a
little proprietary. I gave up on them in 1987. Only when I was
forced to support Compaq for a client did I even touch one after that. If

Important question: Is it necessary to
configure the BIOS in some cases for Myth?

I think one of the Compaq high-end machines uses a Silverstone
case.It shouldn't be surprising that readymade PCs generally have the
cheapest available motherboard, case, PSU etc.I actually briefly
capitulated and bought a Compaq Presario Desktop. It was decent value, but the
machine is not real fast. The BIOS is not configurable, the memory runs with
way too many waits (slow), the motherboard graphics (VIA Unichrome) are very
slow (esp. compared with the Intel Extreme Mobo graphics) and suck at running
the X screensaver GL stuff.I think I'm back to putting my own stuff
  together again.

Is heat a big issue? Since everything else is standard, I would think the TV
Tuner cards are causing heat problems - is this so? I would have thought noise
would be more of a problem.

Also, was it not possible to install heat sinks in the Silverstone LC02?
P.S. What is WAF?

I have given myself the challenge of fitting a fully self-contained myth
box (mini-itx board, tuner card, HDD, optical drive, etc.) into the form
factor of my mini separates (8.5 width, no taller than 3.5). I wanted
something completely fanless, and that would not look out of place in
the living room.
I looked long and hard at the Silverstone LC02 as a compromise (not
half-width, but definately WAF), but in the end have embarked on
building a case from scratch, using a couple of hefty heatsinks as the
side panels, using heatpipes salvaged from a passive VGA cooler kit to
direct the heat away from the CPU/northbridge. Maybe I should start
selling them commercially if the first model works well :)

Thanx everyone for your advice. Sounds like Knoppmyth is the way to go. Does
it have everything one might need for development as well? We want to
eventually write modules for custom applications on it.

BTW, I assume MythTV is GPL. Does that mean anything we write as an add-on have
to be under GPL?

i'll second this. KnoppMyth is an excellent distro for someone
starting out with Myth. you should feel fairly at home with this

easy install, great support and resources (mysettopbox.com).
