[mythtv-users] Some Suggestions for MythTV

2005-08-04 Thread Brandon Rogers

All,

    Since,
for my budget, I was unable to make MythTV “wife-proof,” as it has
been called here, (actually, I was unable even to make it work at all), I
thought I would give some suggestions that will help others looking to make a
MythBox more successful.  So, here it goes…

First, if you want your computer to
be next to a TV, then you have a few options:

a)
Don’t care about the noise and
the look of a computer outside of your Entertainment Center
(any spot in an entertainment center with less than the front and back removed
will make the computer heat up too much.

b)
Be ready to modify your
entertainment center to allow for plenty of air circulation.

c)
Get a VERY cool box with VERY quiet
fans with VERY quiet hard drives.  It would be very difficult to spend too
much money on quiet hardware for the Myth box.

Secondly, you should probably not
try to use your Myth box for standard computing, UNLESS,

a)   You don’t
care about actually reading text.  This goes for both HDTVs and Standard
Television sets.  Normally, you can read the text if you have standard
out, but this is simply because the text is so big and the resolution so bad.  Keep
in mind that Standard TVs only have around 525 scanlines (something like a 480
visible vertical pixel dimension).  This is probably unacceptable for most
people trying to double the Myth box with standard computing.  The only
way to actually get a decent resolution is to modulate the high resolution to a
NTSC signal.  This can be done using a standard RF Modulator (usually used
for changing video inputs from digital [svideo, composite, etc] to analog [coax
RF]).  However, if you do this, you will not be able to read the text on
screen (unless it is scaled larger like Myth does in its frontend).  With
HDTV, while much sharper, many TVs only support 720p which is also much lower
resolution than most people are used to.  This lets you use the HDTV to do
standard computing (like word processing, etc), but you are very limited on
screen real estate.  Just don’t be surprised if you can’t
double the Myth box as a computing station.

b)  You have
something like VNC that you can use to remote into the box.  However, this
requires another computer, so it kind of defeats the purpose.

c)   You set up
the computer, connect it to a Monitor (Variable sync rates) and keyboard and
make the primary setup be used for standard computing.  You can still hook
up your cable or antenna to it and use it to record video.  The recorded
video / live tv could then be watched on the monitor or over a network to a computer
that can be hooked up to a TV.

With that said, if you are
dedicating the box to be *just* a
Myth box (and nothing else), you’ll probably be alright, but be prepared
for some work.  If you aren’t using KnoppMyth, or something similar
(which is curious, because KnoppMyth didn’t set up the pcHDTV 3000 card
correctly either), then expect some work ahead of you.  Most of the hardware
that I got seemed to work well and without problems.  I did struggle with
the Chaintech AV-710 7.1 Surround Sound card, but most people on this list
seemed to have an easy time with it.  Also, I was using the pcHDTV card to
capture TV.  A few suggestions…  Fedora Core 3 compiled and
loaded the pcHDTV V4L drivers without a problem.  This was also true for
Suse 9.2 and Suse 9.3.  However, for whatever reason, while I could record
video with the bundled command line utility for the pcHDTV, I could not get
MythTV to recognize the device correctly.  With Fedora Core 4, the DVB
drivers were included with the distro and were much easier to get working the
the V4L drivers, mostly due to the fact that MythTV actually recognized them.
Also, I was using the ndiswrapper package with a D-LINK Extreme G PCI Wireless
card (and the latest D-LINK driver) and I was able to 108 Mbps wireless.  This
was great, because I could basically watch LiveTV, DVD, even some HDTV over the
wireless network (but not in Myth).

Anyway, my plans for my Myth box is
still to keep Myth running but set it up as a standard computer that runs the
Myth backend so that video can record, but if I want to watch Live TV it will
have to be on the monitor not my 32” HDTV.  If I want to watch a
recorded video, I can watch it on the monitor, or I can copy the recording to a
USB 2.0 external harddrive (2.5”), plug it in to my laptop, connect my
laptop to the HDTV and be ready to watch.  So, while I am not decommissioning
my Myth box, I am changing it’s place in the house… away from the
entertainment center and into the office.

Sorry about the long email, but I’ve
seen a number of people asking about building Myth boxen lately and I thought
that these suggestions would be helpful.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Brandon

[mythtv-users] HDTV Video Modes with MythTV

2005-08-01 Thread Brandon Rogers
At first, I thought the clarity of the 1080i (540p in
some cases) is actually better than the NTSC output.
However, after playing with things, I'm not sure this
is the case. Most of the clarity seems to come from
simply having such a low resolution (the text is
huge). Sure, there are quite a bit of clarity
enhancements, but seeing as the resolution is so low,
I wonder if it is really worth it. I can crank my
resolution up, modulate it to NTSC, and I get more
screen real estate, the picture quality (for an
average video user) are very close (admittedly, the
1080i/540p is better), but by how much and is it
really worth it? What does everyone think?

Thanks,
Brandon

Do you have 'IEC958 Output' turned on in Alsamixer?

If this helps on the sound question, if I switch over to the standard audio
out jack, then I get sound as well. Seems like the sound is being routed
correctly over the SPDIF

[mythtv-users] ALSA Sound

2005-07-31 Thread Brandon Rogers

All,

I know this has probably been talked about
before, but since after 2 days of searching Google and trying “solutions”
others have posted, I will come back and ask a question (which has probably
already been asked 1000 times).  I have the Chaintech AV710 soundcard which
seems like a popular card due to its price/performance.  How do I get this card’s
optical out to work with my Surround Sound Amplifier?  Does it output 5.1
Surround?  If so, what do I need to do to get it to work?  I’ve read the
MythTV Fedora HowTO and the links off that page in attempt to get the sound to
work.  I’ve replaced a zillion alsa sound files, but still doesn’t
work.  If I route the sound to PCM out, I can hear it off the Line Out port.

Thanks for your help!

Brandon

Thanks for all your feedback.  I
guess I should have been more specific.  The ChainTech nVidia FX 5200 card

can be output using the RCA jack or should I get a DVI-HDMI cable for the
connection?

RE: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV 3000: Questions from a MythTV newbie

2005-07-29 Thread Brandon Rogers
Thanks, David for you comments. I found out that I had a bad firmware file.
I replaced it and the scan started working as it should. I do have another
question, though... Do the DVB drivers need a stronger signal than the v4l
drivers? I've noticed that when I use the v4l drivers with xine, I get
several (about 10) HD channels) in the area. My HDTV also receives about
that many. However, when I do a scan with the DVB drivers, I only get one
channel locked and tuned. Does that sound strange? Also, I do have a
pretty cheesy antenna, but it seems to work well enough for me right now.
What kind of antenna setups (rotating attic setups, outdoor stationary
mounts, etc) does everyone have?

Thanks,
Brandon

I've got the HD3000 going on MythTV.

Typically if you do a scan for channels - it will find some. If its
not - sounds like an Antenna issue.

Do you have an /dev/dvb/adapter0 directory with lots of devices in
it? (frontend etc)
Are the permissions appropriate for the account your running myth under?

You mention tuning with xine previously - I'm assuming you mean
before you switched to DVB?

Can you post your dmesg output? Maybe your tuner is bombing out.

As I said - I've got two of these cards running well in the Toronto
Area - and I'm pulling channels from 40km away (From Buffalo) so the
cards do work with Myth. Just need to do some tweaking.

find any signals to lock on to, but I know there is an OTA HD signal in my
area that I have viewing previous with xine. I remember a message somewhere
about needing to modify the channel frequencies to get it to work, because
Zap2it doesn't include the right ones. I just can't seem to find the note.
Anyone have any tips for tuning to the right channels on the pcHDTV 3000?

Thanks,
Brandon

Installed FC4, followed Jarod Wilsons guide, even tho its for FC3.
Since FC4 is using a 2.12 kernel, all I needed to do as root was:

modprobe cx88-dvb

Checked dmesg and saw:
cx2388x dvb driver version 0.0.4 loaded
ACPI: PCI Interrupt :01:07.2[A] -> Link [LNK1] -> GSI 3 (level, low)
-> IRQ 3
cx88[0]/2: found at :01:07.2, rev: 5, irq: 3, latency: 32, mmio:
0xe300
cx88[0]/2: cx2388x based dvb card
DVB: registering new adapter (cx88[0]).
DVB: registering frontend 1 (pcHDTV HD3000 HDTV)...

Checked the permissions on /dev/dvb/adapter1 (as adapter0 is my air2pc
card) :
 ll -h /dev/dvb/adapter1/
total 0
crwxrwxrwx 1 root root 212, 68 Jul 23 11:44 demux0
crwxrwxrwx 1 root root 212, 69 Jul 23 11:44 dvr0
crwxrwxrwx 1 root root 212, 67 Jul 23 11:44 frontend0
crwxrwxrwx 1 root root 212, 71 Jul 23 11:44 net0

All was good on the permissions (note, you may need to modify the
permissions on the dev if you dont have rw access to it, and it may not
survive a reboot, so youll have to add it to your init scripts)

Fired up mythtv-setup and was able to config the pchdtv3k card with no
issues.

YEAH!!! I downloaded and installed FC4 and Myth liked my card with the DVB
drivers!! (Thanks, Tom!) However, I still can't watch TV and I think it is
because of the channel settings. I download only the "DT" channel listings
from zap2it. They show up in the program guide, but don't show up in
MythTVSetup's Channel Editor. I tried the Channel Scan, but it couldn't
find any signals to lock on to, but I know there is an OTA HD signal in my

RE: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV 3000: Questions from a MythTV newbie

2005-07-25 Thread Brandon Rogers
All,
So, I am starting to wonder if MythTV has support
for HD broadcasts on a pcHDTV. Here's what I've
done...
I've tried to get it to say that it was trying to
tune to channel 3.1 again, but I can't figure out what
I did. I used the DVB drivers, the atsc drivers, you
name it. MythTV doesn't recognize the HD side of the
card. I decided to jump ship from FC3 and installed
KnoppMyth hoping that it would just work. No again.
This time, luckily, it detected the card and set it up
correctly in the Card setup. However, when I try to
add an input connection to the card, there is no card
listed. If I were to add the NTSC side of the card,
then I am able to match my listings to the inputs on
the NTSC card, but not when I am using the DVB drivers
or the ATSC drivers.
I have tried almost every major Linux distro
(Debian, FC, SuSE, KnoppMyth, Ubuntu) and I can't get
MythTV to care about the card. I am positive that
this is because I am missing some paradigm that
everyone else seems to get. I've followed every HOWTO
with the pcHDTV in it and Myth still won't run HD.
Like I said earlier in this thread, I can tune with
xine, so I know it works and it isn't a hardware
problem.
Can anyone PLEASE tell me if they have an OTA
pcHDTV setup working at all and if they are actually
viewing HDTV output? (If so, please describe what you
did, not just a "Mine works!" Also, I am just stuck
on how to configure MythTV to work with the pcHDTV
3000. So telling me how to get the packages with apt
or yum, won't help). I guess what I am asking is what
Myth is looking for because it is obviously something
different than either the pcHDTV drivers are making
available, or an inability of Myth to correctly read
the card.

I'm really stuck, so if anyone has any suggestions,
I'm all ears.

Thanks,
Brandon

RE: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV 3000: Questions from a MythTV newbie

2005-07-22 Thread Brandon Rogers
Thanks. It seems like I've done this, but I'll try
this when I get a chance. By the way,
can anyone post what device nodes are created for a
working pcHDTV 3000 DVB driver (one that you are
actually capturing OTA HD broadcasts on). Maybe some
specs as well? Also, maybe exactly which options you
chose in mythtvsetup? (ie Video Device is
/dev/dvb0.frontend0 or dvr0 or whatever).
I also adding in the DVB drivers earlier today and
selected pcHDTV in the capture card setup, but I
DIDN'T mention a device (just left it blank) and the
Television input showed up. Myth seemed to like it,
but mythfrontend freezes when I "Watch TV". The
message on the backend is that it was tuning to
channel 3 subchannel 1 (which no one is broadcasting
on, possibly explaining the freeze and if I can figure
out how to change to a known working frequency, I
might have a good DVB setup). It was early this
morning, however, so I'll double check all this just
in case.
Anyway, is this correct? Seems strange that I
*don't* have to specify a device for it to work.
Maybe it's just a problem with me not understanding
the UI. Then again, maybe it's FC3 that isn't playing
nicely with the DVB drivers. It could be that Myth is
not looking at the correct device (and just thinks
that it is), which is causing the freeze up.

Any thoughts?

RE: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV 3000: Questions from a MythTV newbie

2005-07-22 Thread Brandon Rogers
Using FC3, upgrading to the 2.6.12 kernel, kills the
boot process (bad errors about not being able to load
up the ext3 drivers). After rebuilding the initrd
image, the boot works fine, but the DVB stuff doesn't
insert correctly (errors about the device in the dmesg
log). This is one of the reasons that I was staying
with the 2.6.9 kernel. It's more stable for me, at
least.
I've already been through the pcHDTV stuff and still
no dice. MythTV just read the DVB drivers. (An error
something like: "Could not open DVB driver!").
I've actually recompiled the kernel (2.6.9 and
2.6.12) in various different ways to try to get it to
work...
  Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Brandon

RE: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV 3000: Questions from a MythTV newbie

2005-07-21 Thread Brandon Rogers
David,
Thanks for the reply. I think my question was HOW
to use the DVB drivers in Myth. When I install the
DVB drivers, several DVB device nodes appear, but when
I tell Myth that I have a DVB card installed it tells
me that it couldn't open the card. I believe the
reason for this is simply that Myth is looking for
certain device nodes set up in a certain way and I
have no idea how Myth is trying to read the card. Any
ideas?

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV 3000: Questions from a MythTV newbie

2005-07-21 Thread Brandon Rogers
Could you explain how you got your HD working on your
mythtv setup? Are you getting the same device nodes
created as I am? Did Myth recognize them and know how
to use them or are you just using NTSC signals from
your digital cable set top box? Could you run me
through how you set up MythTV? Like I said, Myth is
working fine with v4l NTSC, but can't get the OTA HDTV
channels working.

Thanks,

2005-07-21 Thread Brandon Rogers
I am receiving OTA HDTV, so just an antenna with a
coax cable (not s-video/composite), so I suppose the
answer is analog?

Thanks!
