[mythtv-users] X output to both TV and monitor

2005-01-02 Thread Carlos Fernandez Sanz
Hi,
Is it possible to use a PVR-350 in X to output to TV and, at the same
time, use a regular video card (an Nvidia FX 5200 to be exact) to output
to monitor? I'd like to use both at the same time... would be really
useful to me. Configuring myth using the TV can't be good for the eyes...

Thanks.

Re: [mythtv-users] X output to both TV and monitor

2005-01-02 Thread Carlos Fernandez Sanz
John,
What I want is both screens to display the same contents... I don't want
to have one virtual area with the TV being at the right or bottom of the
monitor.

The thing is, with the nVidia card (which has TV out too, even though I
believe the PVR-350 has better quality) it works this way from the BIOS
messages until the X server is started. As soon as this happens, the TV
goes black (until I have ConnectedMonitor TV in the config file, in
this case the monitor goes black).

Surely there is a way to tell the X server that there are two devices to
use for display?

Thanks.

Yes is the short answer. There are several ways
1) Run dual screen
Pros - relatively simple to make work
Cons - The 350's X display is tied to the desktop one so logging out
restarts the x server for the 350 as well as the desktop. The desktop mouse
can move off the side and onto the tv's display
2) Run 2 x servers
Pros - they are independent so the 350 one can run forever and
doesn't really need a window manager
Cons - You really need to disable the Virtual Terminal switching
since by default only the one connected to the active virtual terminal will
run. There are patches around for X to do this but that means that you have
to find them, apply them and then rebuild the server.

I do have the patches on my machine and I am hoping to write up how to make
the second option work since several people have asked how to do it.

John

Hi,
Thought about this, but this doesn't output video, plus I'd like my
setup not to assume that there's always a network available, or a
monitor, etc... so if I could make it work with a TV or a monitor
(whatever is available), that would be ideal.

Thanks.

How about this idea:
I have a second computer running win98. Useing the X forwarding of my
myth box I can configure it on Cygwin/X (with ssh) on the windows box.

[mythtv-users] Getting a new motherboard...

2004-12-29 Thread Carlos Fernandez Sanz
Hi,
After spending a few days trying to make my Asus P4P800S (Intel 848P
chipset) work with my PVR-350 I give up. The tuner just won't work. I'm
sure someone more skilled than I would be able to make it happen but ...

Anyway, I installed a XP in that box just to make sure the hardware
wasn't the problem. I wouldn't work either until I installed the
motherboard chipset drivers - everything started to work. Since I don't
know how to do the same thing in Linux, I have decided to replace the
mobo with one that is more tested.

So the question is simple: If you were to buy a motherboard for mythtv
(only use) to use with these cards:

PVR-350
DVB-S (Nesus)
I've searched the database but most people is using Shuttle's which are
no good for me since I need plenty of PCI lots (plus I already have a
nice HTPC case).

Athlon or P4 is no problem.
I'm sorry my frustration is evident in this email.
Thanks.
