Hi all,I have just read the release notes for 0.19 and all i can say is,oh boy, gooodie, gdie.I was wondering when the new release was due. Now i can see why it has taken so long.
I am not able to post answers very often, as i grew up in a Windoz world and work in a Windo world. So Linux hurts my brain. But i would like to thank all of you that help us (sometimes) annoying people.

A . Q. Does the upgrade keep the current recording schedules? IE the wife has set Myth to record all of the 'days of our lives' or something. Will all of those be kept. if not how do we save them.A.

[mythtv-users] [Mythtv-users] - Mythbackend stopping randomly

2006-01-22 Thread Chris Henderson
Hi all,First thanks to all on this list that give your time so freely.I have had my mythtv setup up and running for quite a while now. I am running my setup with Dvico lite cards. With some help form the forum here i got them going. And it seems to be working perfectly.
But then i started to run into a, seemingly random, problem. Myth would say that it is recording the program but not actually do it. After checking all the logs i could find, i still couldn't find the problem. So i checked that the backend was running and it was most of the time it was. it seems that even though the backend crashes the mythbackend status command doesn't show or know that the backend has crashed. so i just restart it and it works.
So off to the list I go. After a bit of searching i find that there is a
known bug when the recordings screen is left open and the log files
tries to do something it crashes the mythbackend service. Here is the rub, i found somewhere off this list a person that documents how to use a program that tracks certain process to see if they are still running. (cant find it now. off course) but if the status command says that it is still running, will that work? From memory it says it says that it uses the PID
The thread in the forum says that it is fixed in the SVN and therefore in 0.19 should not have that problem anymore. Now i am not anywhere near good enough to try a snapshot of the CVS, even if i knew what that meant ;-)
So my questions are; Will the program (that i cant find now) work if the status command says that it is still running?Would it be better to just restart the service at a set time say 1pm everyday? - i would assume that you could use a cron job to do this. can somebody help me with this?
Is there something simple to fix this problem? (please don't say, don't leave it in the watch recordings screen. The wife does this every day no matter what i tell her she is the one that complains that it didn't record her show!!! )
Any help would be great..Chris.

[Mythtv-users] Playing recording kills frontend

2005-09-07 Thread Chris Henderson
Hi all,

I have been fully enjoying the mythtv experience after 2 years for
trying to get it working (part time with VERY wrong hardware). the Wife
forked over some money for a new computer for me and mine (P3 1gig)
became the BE along with a dvico fusion dvbt card.

Once it was all going with a lot of help from people Off list (thanks
again guys) the WAF is very high. high enough to get a second dvbt card
so she doesnt miss any shows due to confection.

I have installed the machine to Jarrod Wilsons FC3 guide (thanks Jarrod
for the guide) and i am now using a HP e-vectra as a front end, again
using JW FC3 guide.

Now come the problem, which is more annoying than anything.
Occasionally when watching a program on the frontend that had been
recorded previously, it seems to fault somehow.

I have searched the list and it was said that the commercial marking
jobs can do this. So i turned off the jobs for all recordings. (we
don't keep the recordings anyway). this didn't seem to fix it.

Again i went back to the forum and another suggestion was when the free
space in recording drive was low this would happen. But it has happened
again the other night while recording Startgate Atlantis (of all
things). the recording wok great up till a point then it ands and sits
there for ages and then myth craps its self and goes back to the FC
desktop.

SO i didn't get shitty with it and delete it i ave keep the recording
and now on a day off i have killed the automatic start of the backend
and frontend and started them up in terminal sessions. (again a
suggestion off the list)

here is what i got:

Re: [mythtv-users] lirc not working in X using FC 3 and DVICO remote.irxevent does not exist!

2005-07-05 Thread Chris Henderson
Thanks for the help - it worked!

For the record: I'm now using latest version of lirc (version 0.7.1
with built-in support for the DVICO remote - no patches required) and
I downloaded Chris Pascoe's lircrc file
 (http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~chrisp/Linux-DVB/DVICO/mythtv-lircrc) and
copied it to /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc (as you suggested). Jani's
lircrc is configured for irxevent so this doesn't work.

Now all I need to do is sort out some channel setup issues and I'm away!

 Thanks again for the help.

 Cheers

Just for the record, with a lot of help from another person on this
list we got the dvico remote working as well.

The native lirc that comes with standard mythtv distro supports the
dvico remote.

After a lot of stuff ing around it was as simple as adding the
following line to the rc.local startup file.

/usr/local/sbin/lircd --driver=dvico --device=/dev/hiddev0

just do 'locate lircd' and it will tell you where it is. (change path
to lircd if necessary)

then all you need is the lircd.conf file (tells the deamond what the
key presses are) and the lircrc file (tells myth what the outputs from
the deamon do)

Put them into the following dir's
/home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc
/etc/lircd.conf

there is no need to install lirc pre 074 or what ever. The dvico
remote works out of the box. So much so that i had a backend /frontend
setup in the study and the wife wanted it in the loung. So i built a
frontend (E-vetrca) as per jarrods guide and then unplugged the
remote off the backend, plugged it into the front end, did what i said
above and it worked.

Just my 2 cents

Thanks guys,

No i didn't install the development stuff at install time. i will have
look at getting it done via FC menu some how. will have to investigate
further on that one. there is properly a way to install more programs

Looks like to me you don't have any development tools installed on your

If you just run 'cc' - you should get:

 Cc: no input files

 if you get

 -bash cc: command not found

Then you don't have a compiler installed.

If that's the case - you'll need to install all the development tools.
I've never installed them onto an already running system - always at
 build time.

You should be able to install them via the GUI (programs or something
 ??).

[mythtv-users] MythLCD?? is there a config file

2005-06-29 Thread Chris Henderson
Hi all,

I have been busy working on the mythtv system. the backend/frontend is
downstairs and the Wife Approval Factor is at an all time high. :-)

I had the idea to use a Xbox as a frontend (she says its a bit noisy,
boy she doesn't ask much.) the money was a approved for the xbox, but
i remembered that i had a e-vetra sitting in a cupboard somewhere, and
while lurking on the forum i remembered that someone had got one of
these working. figuring that i could use the xbox funding to get
another DVB card (to make 2) and 200 gb HDD for storage.

Off to the mad scientist room and pull out the e-vectra. after a
little weirdness with the screen card not refreshing, a apt-get dist
upgrade fixed that. (apt-get is great, thanks to the ppl that maintain
it) I followed Jarods guide to the letter (great work Jarod, please
keep it up for newbi's like me) and low and behold i have the e-vectra
playing a recording i made.
A little shopping around and i found a gadget at jaycar (aus) called
grand Hand View by grandtec. (stock code XC4870) $89 (79 on special)
the quality is not bad, but i have nothing to compare it to.

The question i have is, i am using 0.18.1 and i have enabled MythLCD
in the appearance section of setup. But there does not seem to be a
'setup' section. From all the searching on the Gossamer threads
archive and googling i was able to find out that it runs a lcdproc
backend and myth just feeds it info. Cool.
the archive has nothing recent on it. it all seems to be info on the
CVS version before it made it into the 0.18.1 release. I also googled
to see if any one had a home page regarding this. no luck there.

The bit of info i was able to find was something about a
'settings.pro' file and then edit your mythconverge db. but a quick
locate on settings.pro only found
/usr/share/services/settings.protocol and it had nothing about an LCD
or LCDPROC.

I did some reading on the LCDPROC home page but it doesn't seem to
relate to myth or i cant make anything of it. I am guessing that
somewhere you will have to tell lcdproc that i am using a HD447780
20X4 line Parallel display.

SO could anyone help me get this thing to work.

As a mythtv user i think that LxM is a great idea.
BUT ( there is always a BUT ) as a person that lives in Australia the
tv listings hook is useless. Maybe they could come up with separate
pricing for some of there content, like the themes.
A lot of people seem to like the Midnight theme (time to put our money

that there would be several people that would buy the Syth or Midnight
theme just to help the developers on this list that give there time
freely and if you guys can get behind a 'paid' product and get
something out of it great, you deserve it.
From a purely selfish point of view, it would properly mean that the
content and ideas that spawned mythtv would get a great boost.

But if the LxM people just want a subscription each month, for me
there would be no point.

There are two buttons on a stock Xbox - power and eject. The way the

Powering on with the power button starts the box with the

i went and read the mythtv-box website posts, thanks (i didn't find
that one :-) )

But i am a little confused still. in the posts there is says that

 quote snip ---

Powering it on via the eject button uses the ms bios (ie unmodded) and
power button boots up the modchip bios and boots to evox. (great)

The only problem that I have with it is that Xebian doesn't always
start properly from the dashboard. ( ??? ) I'd say it's about 50/50 -
it'll hang with that dreaded green pixel requiring a reboot/retry.
Otherwise it's all good.

 end quote ---

the thing that confuses me is the ' Xebian doesnt always start from
the dashboard' part.

I was under the impression that Xebian was a full linux install. does
that me it reboots the xbox and then loads the Xebian/mythtv setup.

Also where did this install of xebian/mythtv go? like i said before i
know that the tool 'xbtool' will make a new partition did you put it
there?
You didnt say if you had replaced the hdd but i got the impression
that you didnt. so how do you get the versions of evox and xebian to
coexsist?

It is sounding like you can play the standard M$ xbox by pressing the
eject button. (great the wife will love the simplicity of that)

then if you press the power button it starts the 'modded version' of
the xbox called evox.
from there you can do all of the fun extra bits that the chip allows
AND start the liunx version of mythtv. (not the XBox Media Center)

Did i get it right.

Re: [mythtv-users] Mythtv on xbox

2005-06-20 Thread Chris Henderson
There are a couple of install options - one of which is to create the root
filesystem as a loopback file on the xbox filesystem - no need to run
fdisk. The entire system is contained in a half dozen files on the E:
 drive.

That sound interesting.

When I boot with the modchip, the evox dashboard comes up, and I added the
option to boot Xebian to a menu. When I choose that option, Xebian
starts up (most of the time - it's probably closer to 3:1 now) Supposedly
this is an issue with Xebian 1.12 on v1.6 xboxes. I haven't tried 1.13
yet to see if it fixes the problem.

Ok this is sounding good. So that sounds like that you don't need to
use a new BIOS. and the wife can use it simply. Cool.
How did you get it to boot to Xebian. did you have to configure the
chip to boot to the right files? Did the install of Xebian do this for
you or did you have to edit the mod chip to allow the booting of linux
for this menu.

Really i don't know of the use for the xecuter3 then. it sounds as if
you can boot linux/mythtv from the dashboard of evox. If that is the
case and it can be done by a simpleton like me, i am going out to by
one.

I have only had the briefest look at the xbox. but the start up time
on the thing is really quick. too quick for a computer. I don't know
how it works. might be worth reading up on that.

  Did i get it right.

Yup. I also have XBox Media Center installed on my evox menu, and the
myth scripts installed there, but I never use it anymore.

I have taken so long to get this ruddy mythbox going i would prefer to
use mythtv app so the wife see the money that i have spent. ;-)

Since I got my myth frontend working and configured the way I like, I
haven't spent much time in the dashboard, or doing other stuff.
Supposedly I'd be able to play on xBox Live, but I have my suspicions - it
would be easy enough to detect that the box has been modded even if the
modchip is disabled (just by the presence of unauthorized files on the HD)

well i was wondering that, if they use a worm to do the checking, then
i would be a simple task to just look for an f: drive. if there is one
it has a mod. -banned-

I suppose that you could all ways use XBCONNECT.com which is free
(ATM) and they don't care if it has been modded or not.

Not that it matters much to me - I don't get to use the XBox for anything
other than TV anymore ;) It's a 24 hour Blues Clues machine it seems
 like.

Now that is cruel. very cruel. you are a better man than i
Not starting to collect guns and plans for buildings are you??
haha - just kidding - i couldn't put up with that. (can you tell i
have no kids?)

Greg would you mind if i emailed you off list for some more details?

PS thanks for the info re the software mod. - i will have look at that too

[mythtv-users] Mythtv on xbox

2005-06-19 Thread Chris Henderson
Well i have finally got mythtv going with the help of Carl (off list
help) thanks carl.

I have working version of mythtv ver0.18 with 1dvb card ATM. the wife
approval factor has sored since i got it to work in the study. I see
extra money coming my way for upgrades (2 3rd tuners as she misses
some of her shows). Get the tv out working on the computer and it can
go into the lounge.

But that is not why i am emailing the list. The other day we were over
at a friends place and she started to play the xbox, lord of the rings
i think, and liked it. so i casually mention that i can make the xbox
be frontend for myth and be the xbox as well.

there was quite pause and she said, really, how much?. COOL.

Not one to knock back money for toys when it thrown at me, i started
to cost it out.
i would prefer a beemer in the lounge and use a normal computer to
play games on, but that is never going to happen. neither is a HDTV in
the near future so this seems a great solution. Also this is just
going into 68cm Sony tv. 5 or so years old. (it doesnt even have a
s-video in, just to make life fun) so as much as the dvico is HD i
aint going to be using HD for a long time.
as i have yet to get tv out of the mx 440 going though the TV i am not
sure of the quality i will get from the GF4 mx440. But it sould be as
good as normal free to air analog. And from the posts i have read re
the xbox this is all i can expect from it. (maybe even better SD???)

Any feedback???

So here i am searching the mythtv posts regarding the xbox. i have
found several sites etc regarding the mythtv on the xbox.

it seems it needs to run under linux, (really i never would of thought :-0 )
It seems fairly straight forward, So did myth and carl know how long
it took me. :-)

but there is several things i cant seems to find answers for

I have googled from here to lower Bombay and back via every web server
it seems and i can find a clear picture of what needs to be done to
use the xbox as an xbox and as a pvr.
(also it could be that i am a bit dense)

there are a couple of possibilities.

Chip the xbox with a OS based chip like the ICE or the Executer and
install a big arse HDD. use the buttons that can be brought to make
switching between xbox -orig, PVR xbox modified. ( this seems to be
the most wife friendly option. also the LCD available for this
? can it be utilised for the mythtv frontend )

OR

One of the cheaper mods called the aladin and the etxender so that i
can have 2 or 3 hdd in the box. Just push the button for PVR and start
it on a completely separate hdd.

then there is something about the different bois's needed. the guy
that i talked to down at the local swap meet here in AUS said that you
need a special bois 'cromwell' i think. and that you can load this
into the aladin.

The thing i can get straight ATM is if you can run the STD xbox (for
xbox live), the Improved xbox and the -linux-mythtv app on the same
drive. I understand that the orig xbox only comes with a 10gb hdd so i
know that i will have to get a bigger one 160-200gb are cheap.

While searching i found www.xboxscene.com and that has a lot of links
and info on it. in there somewhere i found mention of the ability to
create and f: drive when you put the bigger hdd in.
I would assume (and i know what assume means) i could install the
linux app in there?.
But isnt that space for the game to be loaded?

From what i can figure out the Xectuor3 comes with a switch bank that
allows you to use different bios's and to turn off the chip to use
xbox live. the switch bank is what decide it for me if it behaves the
way i hope it does. this way i can get more upgrade money from the
wife.

Any info you can give me would be a great help. please feel free to
email off list if this is to far out there.
I would like to take the time to thank all the people on the list that
put up with the newbies like me. this is a great product and i hope to
be able to contribute back soon.

Also there is a selection in the settings part of the front end, in
the themes part, that allows you to change the menu style. look for
that and switch it to classic.

That should give you the menu style youare looking for, i think.

just my 2cents.

PS i use the theme as well under classic.

You will have to edit the mainmenu.xml file in /usr/share/mythtv

You can edit other menus by browsing through the other XML files in that

 Chris

Thank to the people that have replied off list to help me get this going.

But i have a couple of problems that i though i would ask the list about.

(1) the 2.6.10.77.fc3 kernal supports dvb and with some help off list
i got the dvico card to work by manually starting some modules
dvb-core, bt878, dvb-bt8xx, bttv card=0x80. (thanks Jason) in that
order.
it seemed to work the first time. then i screwed the system with a
format command (whoops was that hd1 or 2) time for a reinstall. the
second time i tried to put them in the rc.local. but the card would
not work. Again off to the list and with a lot of searching i found a
post about the same problem except for the module was the cx88 ( for
the conextant chipset of the plus version my card). Again (in Jarrod
comes charging in on his great white steed) comes Jarrod with a post
saying that he plugs it into line 157 or something of the rc.sysinit.
following the advise i removed that modprobe line from the rc.local
and placed it in the rc.sysinit. bang up it comes.
Excellent. (keep reading the questions are linked, i think)

(2) I too have been bitten by the latest QT bug, the buttons in the
setup don't seem to work, but after following good list practice a
used the search function and low and behold there is the answer
(thanks Jarrod for the ctrl-enter answer and the excellent guide.
Please keep up the great work.)

(2.1) this maybe related to the above problem i am not sure. But
mythtvsetup does not seem to save any of the settings that i select.
for example when i change the locations of the recordings to
/video/recordings (as per guide) and carry on. (still with the QT
issue. ctrl-enter to proceed) when i got to the selecting the card i
had some initial trouble (see q1) then i found the card and set what i
needed to. ctrl-enter. back to the list but there is no card. do it
again, ctrl-enter. no card. once more just for the slow (me) off to
the list.

Oh yea after i could not find anything related to this i started to
gather the info for this post and realised that mythtvsetup is not
saving anything. this seems to be a permissions issue to my MS$
trained brain. but could that be it? as it was install from the mythtv
user. and i tried to run setup in the terminal in both $ and #

SO is the QT issue related to the saving problem?
is the dvb card, that is now working not related?
and can anyone help me with the saving issue in setup.

thanks for your time.
