I THOUGHT I was running 0.18... but you are right David, I have version 0.17.
apt-cache show mythtv shows that the amd64 repositories are using
0.17. So I guess I have to either wait until they do a 0.18 or
hand-roll it myself.

My the way, is my set up going to break EVERY time there is an
incremental release (where I have it on one system but not on the
other)? Why isn't this backwards compatible to the previous release?

[mythtv-users] Network protocol problem: what does this mean?

2005-09-28 Thread Craig Hagerman
I have a wierd problem. I have mythtv set up and working OK. Now I
want to use another machine as a front end, in a remote location. I
set up mythtv on that frontend, entered the relevant IP address... and
it tells me this:

The server uses network protocol version 14, but this client only
understands version 15. Make sure you are running compatible versions
of the backend and frontend.

Have any of you seen this? What is it referring to. I think that both
versions of mythtv are 0.18. I think the frontend version of mySQL is
newer but would that matter? What IS the "network protocol" version 14
or 15 that it is referring to and what can I do about it.

The backend is running ubuntu 5.04 amd64. The frontend machine is
running debian sid amd64. The former was a breeze to install, while
the latter was a total bitch. I couldn't get mythtv to install vi
apt-get (turns out it is the 32 bit version), it wouldn't install from
deb-src, and I couldn't get it to install from the tar ball. (Later
found out I have to change the version of gcc for this.) but someone
DID point me to a new 64bit deb file here:

deb http://pure64.org/debian ./

Got that installed, then ran into set up problems. I eventually
tracked that down to a problem with mySQL. I use version 4.1 which
uses different password authentication. After telling it to use the
old-style, mythtv got set up OK. Now if only I can figure out this
"network protocol" version thing maybe my setup will be complete.

Ahh I see. I don't remember seeing the Hardware Recording Profile
option. Do you remember off-hand where I can find it? Maybe I don't
have it set.

Is that the ONLY thing that is necessary to set up Rob? Like Michael I
have had no luck with automatic transcoding (on a fairly new mythtv
install). That "automatically transcode" box IS checked, but there is
no transcoding and no mention of transcoding in mythbackend.log.

How do I "load the commercial skip list"? I used ffmpeg to
manually transcode a couple programs. Is there a way to skip
commercials with ffmpeg? (I don't think so.) I tried nuvexport but it
stopped with an error and it was easier to use what I know (ffmpeg)
rather than trying to figure out what is wrong with nuvexport.

Anyway, I thought that mythtv was supposed to be doing this (transcode
and cut commercials) automatically after it finished recording. Am I
wrong about this? Does everyone have to run nuvexport manually?

Excellent tip Adam. (I am using Ubuntu AMD64 actually and the logs are
there.) I just checked out the log. (Pasted the last bit below). It
seems that commercials ARE being flagged, but there is some strange
error:
[mpeg2video @ 0x2a96567aa0]invalid cbp at 28 11

I wonder what "MVs" are and why they are not available. Any ideas?
Also, I don't seem to have the DB (database?) connections that you
show in your logs. Problem?

Thanks Rob, but -c and -s are the flags for transcoding on the fly
aren't they? I have a file that has already been recorded and want to
transcode that. I don't need to tell it a channel or starttime, but
rather an input file. And it fails. (Also, I am doing this all from
the commandline or through mythweb - backend is in a remote location
so I don't watch / transcode through the front end)

Craig

mythtranscode --help gives this information:

Thanks Kevin, I am embarrassed that I missed that.
If I understand things correctly, mythtv calls mythtranscode after it
finishes recording. I tried using mythtranscode from the command line
to see what is happening and it failed:

%mythtranscode -i 1058_20050921163000_2005092117.nuv -f foo.avi

Stream: 0 Type: 0
Stream: 1 Type: 1

  Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg2video, 480x480, 29.97 fps, 6000 kb/s
  Stream #0.1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s
mythtranscode: mpeg2trans.cpp:668: bool
MPEG2trans::process_video(AVPacket*, bool): Assertion `0' failed.
Aborted

So perhaps my problems are with mythtranscode and NOT incorrect
settings. Any one have any idea on what this error message means and
how to fix it?

[mythtv-users] Auto transcode and commercial cutting not happening

2005-09-21 Thread Craig Hagerman
HI,

I am not sure if I have overlooked something or it is just ignorance,
but mythtv doesn't seem to be either flagging commercials or doing
automatic transcoding.

On the mythfrontend settings I have the appropriate checkboxes checked
to allow for automatic transcoding and commercial detection. On
mythweb when I set it to record a program the checkboxes for
"Auto-flag commercials" is checked. However, the shows are not
transcoded (they are left in .nuv format), and the commercials are
still present. But then it HAS to be transcoded in order for
commercials to be cut, right? But Mythweb also has "has cutlist: no"
... and I thought this SHOULD be "yes" since it is set to auto-flag
commercials. Have I misunderstood this?

Can anyone show me where I might have gone wrong here?

[mythtv-users] mythTV settings from the command line?

2005-09-19 Thread Craig Hagerman
Hi,

I recently set up a mythTV backend using Ubuntu 5 AMD64, and it seems
to be working OK. Bit of background - the backend is in Canada. I am
on the other side of the world in Japan, and I want to be able to see
Canadian hockey and maybe some local programming.

The problem is that I can't use mythTV via the frontend (since I don't
have physical access to the machine) and I would like to manipulate it
via the command line if possible. I have mythweb set up, but it only
allows me to schedule recordings and not alter settings.

(Note - I DID set up a vnc server, and it worked when I was home
recently, but I can't get in now for some reason, so that isn't an
option.) Does anyone else do this kind of thing? I can't find any
information online about how mythtv is set up behind the scenes.

I had assumed that settings would be stored in some config files
but I can't find any. ARE there config files or not? I have come to
the conclusion that all of the settings must be stored in a mySQL
database. Is that correct? I checked out the mythconverg database
using phpmyadmin last night, but don't yet have a good handle on it.

Specifically, I am trying to figure out how to change settings
concerned with commercial detection and deletion, automatic
transcoding after recording and perhaps video card settings. (I have a
Hauppauge PVR-150 and thought I read somewhere it could record
directly to MPEG4 rather than MPEG2.) Also, my aspect ration seems to
be off. The picture is tall, but narrow relative to a normal TV
screen. Can anyone tell me how to view and adjust these settings
without using mythtv-frontend?

[mythtv-users] CPU recommendation instead of EPIA?

2005-08-01 Thread Craig Hagerman
I am planning on building a mythTV box and need a recommendation
regarding CPU. My original plan was to build around a mini-itx EPIA
system (EPIA M-1 or M-12000). However, after reading through this
board (and having a previous question answered) I think that I should
consider another system. I am concerned about transcoding performance
with the EPIA CPUs.

I plan to use this box only as a back end to record TV and transcode.
I understand that with EPIA CPUs performance for transcoding is
terrible. What kind of CPU would you recommend? I don't want to spend
too much (otherwise, I wouldn't ask here - I would just go buy the
lastest from AMD or Intel). Also, I would prefer to build a system
that is:
- less power-hungry (uses less electricity)
- is fairly quiet
- has a smaller form factor

This is why I originally planned a mini-itx system. I know it is a
subjective question, but what kind of (AMD / INTEL) CPU provides the
'sweet spot' for price vs. performance (vis. a vis. transcoding)?

Thanks,

Craig

Re: [mythtv-users] Via M10000

2005-06-20 Thread Craig Hagerman
I too am interested in the Epia M1000. Is anyone here using this, and
can you answer a couple questions?

 A bit of background:
I want to build a box to record and transcode TV ONLY. I don't care
about playback etc. I will move the files on my network to another
machine for playback so none of those related issues are relevant. The
reason I am interested in the M1000 is that I want a very small form
factor and I want a silent or almost-silent box. (I am thinking about
using the Otonashi case with a heatpipe rather than CPU fan.)

What I am wondering is how the Epia performs at transcoding. I know
this can take up a lot of CPU power. How long does it take to (remove
commercials and)transcode an hour of video down to something smaller?
Can anyone recommend any other small form factor, relatively cool CPU
/ motherboard for my project?
