[mythtv-users] Help with pcHDTV

2005-12-09 Thread E. Mike Durbin

Hi. I've been using MythTV for over a year now with a
PVR-250.

However, I can't get my new pcHDTV 3000 to work.

I compile with the DVB modules.

Sorry, but I'm baffled.

Any help? Suggestions?

Just to be sure, I took the PVR-250 out of the box.

Also, I ran the atscscan as root.

I too didn't see it loading the firmware --- but I don't get any error
messages either. The messages in /var/log/message stop at:

The atscscan doesn't generate any more messages, including any
possible errors loading the firmware.

Thanks!

That is a little strange. Hopefully your PVR-250 is now on
/dev/video1 (set the first minor option to move it), since the HD3000
is grabbing video0. Here's my /dev/dvb for my HD3000 (which I run
with a PVR500):

# find /dev/dvb
/dev/dvb
/dev/dvb/adapter0
/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0
/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0
/dev/dvb/adapter0/ca0
/dev/dvb/adapter0/osd0
/dev/dvb/adapter0/net0
/dev/dvb/adapter0/audio0
/dev/dvb/adapter0/video0
/dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0
/dev/dvb/adapter1
/dev/dvb/adapter2
/dev/dvb/adapter3

It might be a permissions issue on the devices, but your error says no
such device, so probably not.

I'll go with the datadirect.cpp hack for the summer

I use Zap2It, and I'm (now) in CDT.
Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know
how to fix it??

I can't even buy my own STB to use. Shocker.

- can I just request one of these motorola dct6200's?

I picked up a Motorola DCT6200 digital cable box from Comcast. Connected it to my Myth
box via FireWire and it works great. By compiling 6200ch.c located in the
contrib directory Myth is able to change channels on the 6200. You of course
need to compile Myth with ieee1394 support which is dependent on several ieee1394
libraries. libraw1394 and libiec61883 are two libraries you need that I can think of off
the top of my head but there may be more. Anyone know any more? Also, you need ieee1394
support compiled into the kernel. Once I got all the libraries compiled and installed and
the kernel compiled with ieee1394 support it was a simple matter of plugging in the 6200.
Amazingly it just worked! Your milage will of course vary depending on which distro of
Linux you're running as to the ease of getting dependencies installed. I use Gentoo and
because of their Portage package manager found it fairly easy to get things compiled,
installed, configured, and running.
The nice thing I've found about running FireWire from the digital cable box is
that since there's no need for an analog to digital conversion the hit of the
CPU is very small. On the p3 733 I run Myth on capturing video uses roughly 3%
of the CPU. I assume the same is true for capture cards but having never used
one I can't say for sure.
I can run MythFrontend on Mac OS X and watch live or recorded TV over my
network as well as change channels by typing them on the keyboard. I also
created a Samba share for the directory Myth save the video to whick allows me
to copy recorded progams to other computers. Very slick.

Having just gotten my myth box running using analog cable and a pvr
350, I'd like to now bring my digital cable box into the fold. But, I
don't want to deal with lirc if at all possible. So I'm wondering
about the viability of using firewire. How easy is this and what's
the prognosis for supporting channel changing over firewire via myth
in the near future?

Re: [mythtv-users] Is mythTV ready for prime time?

2005-03-14 Thread E. Mike Durbin
The problem isn't with Suse directly. It's with QT.
QT on Suse is not compiled with database support
or threads.
Simply download QT 3.3.4, configure, compile, install.
Then link /usr/lib/qt3 to /usr/local/qt (from the QT install)
and you're good to go.
This is what it took to get MythTV running on Java Desktop
3.0 (which is based on Suse 9.1)

Kevin Saenz wrote:
After fighting with database issues on Suse 9.1, I switched to
KnoppMyth, which supposedly auto-installs all the prereqs and sets up
the database. Yet it cannot connect to the master backend

I'm throwing in the towel. Looking at the archives of this list, it
appears that this tool is still packed with gotchas, one complication
after another. Does anyone else share the same thoughts, or am I just
having unusual difficulties?

I threw in the towel with Suse9.0 and 9.1 (I was testing Suse as place
of employment is a Novell house). There are a few people who have had
success with using mythtv on suse.
I was thinking of using knoppMyth the only question that I has was
does it support dvb? So far I have not found an answer to that.
I used Mandrake because I moved away from RH, and I read that it has a
little more support for most codecs. I am not entirely happy with
Mandrake but at least it works.

Appently this must be a new problem.
I've had MythTV 0.16 and 0.17 working
for many months at 1024x768. See:

so I can get native 1366x768 on my display.
See: http://www.emike.org/mythtv/bad.jpg

I just hooked my frontend box up to my very old Sony CRT Video Projector (Circa 1986) via VGA and a special modeline to generate 15khz output (768x483 @ 59.94Hz Interlaced). I had to use an old Matrox video card that would sync down to 15khz and generate Composite sync. Here's the modeline I'm currently using that works pretty well (other than having the left and right sides of the display chopped of by roughly 10 pixels):
  ModeLine NTSCspec-59.94i 14.318 768 784 848 910 483 484 492 525 Interlace -CSYNC

Again, it's working fine, but this modeline is 14.318Khz, and my projector is
capable of scanning up to 26Khz. I'd like to optimize the display mode to take
advantage of this, and hopefully eliminate most of the interlace flicker.
So I tried different Modeline settings, and it was a real pain to test
different modes as restarting X didn't seem to take the new modeline, so I
would have to re-boot inbetween changes. And if the modeline wasn't right,
then X would fail to load and I would have to connect a standard 'vga' monitor
to display the text mode display (which is 31khz scan rate) so I can edit the
config file to try a different modeline. Then I re-boot again with the
projector connected to try it out... After about 20 attempts at different mode
lines and having very limited success, I decided I'd just have to live with the
15khz mode for now. (Note: I was using a couple of online modeline calculators
on my Laptop to generate modelines that I was trying on the Linux box, not just
randomly trying different settings!)
So as my subject line asks... Is there a 'realtime' modeline tool (similar to
PowerStrip for the PC) for Linux? You know, something that you can select
different resolutions and adjust things dynamically, and hit 'esc' to revert to a
'working' display if you end up with an unusable display? Or do I have to use a PC and
PowerStrip to determine what works best with my projector, and then generate a modeline
from PowerStrip?
If it makes any difference, the frontend box is a P4 @ 800Mhz running FC3, and the Projector is a Sony VPH-1030Q1 with the following specs:
 VPH-1030Q (Low serial# 50x - only up to 26KHz)
 Lumens: 500
 Contrast Ratio: 15,000:1
 Horizontal Scanrate: 15-26KHz
 Vertical Scanrate: 50-100Hz
 RGB Bandwidth: 15MHz
 Composite Sync

Thanks in advance...

Jeff
