[mythtv-users] DVB-T and DVB-S on same box

2006-01-09 Thread James Pattinson

Hi All

I have been running a mythTV system using a DVB-S card for a many months
with great success. I can get all the free to air BBC channels.

I've now added a Freecom DVB-S adaptor, which is also working well.
However I thought I would be able to "integrate" the two systems as
there is a lot of channel overlap, but not all channels on -T are
available on -S and vice versa.

How can I tell MythTV that, for example, BBC ONE is available on both
cards, so it will let me record two things at once? It's channel 1 on
the -T card and channel 6301 on the -S card.

Is this even supported? I was suprised to find that to even watch the
new channels on my frontend, I had to switch tuners. I would have
thought it could be more abstract than that. Why should the frontend
care what tuner it users?

I get the feeling I'm missing something basic :D

Thanks
James

Why wouldn't you just look for an svideo->SCART adapter for the M10k?

Are there VGA->SCART adapters? I'm on the wrong side of the pond to
have any first hand experience with SCART so forgive my ignorance ;)

*shrug* If you have an otherwise working setup with the m10k, unless
you're enjoying yourself working on the modded xbox... why not a
simple solution?

I did buy an S-Video to SCART adaptor, but the quality isn't hot. It
seems to just convert the S-Video signal into the equivalent of a
composite signal that SCART understands, so not RGB.

I found a VGA to SCART adaptor but it was about £70, and that's a bit of
a risk without knowing what the quality is going to be like.

Also - running the FE on the Xbox will may end up being the more simple
solution if it lets me get rid of the m10k box. Less stuff to clutter up
the lounge :)

Thanks to everyone who replied so far - I am going to try Phill's
suggestion as I like the idea of not have to reboot into Linux to run
the front end. I already have a GentooX install on the Xbox that I could
use if I find xbmcmythtv doesn't fit the bill for some reason.

One of the big advantages of this solution is that you don't have to
boot into Linux so startup times are a _lot_ quicker, plus it's
probably a bit easier to configure as it's just a few settings screens
- you don't have to worry about setting up a whole linux OS etc.
Downside is that the functionality is not as rich and you have to
download a patched mplayer to play files transcoded to MPEG4.

I don't think I'm using MPEG4 - it's the stream from the DVB transponder
which I think is MPEG2 though I could be wrong!

[mythtv-users] Xbox as FE

2005-09-27 Thread James Pattinson

Hi All

I am currently using minimyth on an EPIA-M as my frontend, and it
generally works really well. However the connection to my TV is only
Composite-out so the quality is not too hot (my TV doesn't do S-Video).

I do have an Xbox running XBMC connected to my TV via SCART and the
quality when playing videos is great so I'd like to investigate the
possibility of using it as my front end. Of course another benefit of
this would be that I get remote control functionality for free, as I'm
using a wireless keyboard at the moment.

However, most of the information I've found on the web is out of date,
and the instructions at http://bit.blkbk.com/ refer to Xebian 1.0.3
which I cannot locate at all.

So with this in mind, can anyone share their experiences of setting this
up? Can the xbox hardware handle the load? My back end is saving the DVB
transport stream straight to disk and i'm not transcoding anything.

Pros / Cons?

Cheers!

I run the uk_rt grabber from cron with any problems (grabber version
1.77 I think , MythTV 0.18.1). Here is a snippet of my script:

#-
{
perl /usr/bin/tv_grab_uk_rt --config-file
/home/mythtv/.mythtv/analogue.xmltv --output
/home/mythtv/.mythtv/analogue.xml --quiet
/usr/bin/mythfilldatabase --file 2 -1
/home/mythtv/.mythtv/analogue.xml

sleep 5
rm -f /home/mythtv/.mythtv/analogue.xml

} >/dev/null 2>&1
#-

I send all output to /dev/null and run the grabber with the quiet
option. Maybe this will help you.

Hi James,

Two things - try turning off the setting 'wait for seq start header'
in your dvb card setup in the mythtv-setup app. There is possibly a
bug in the TS SEQ detection code that manifests this way.
Either that, or you are having a descrambling issue. I'm almost done
with a patch against current svn that will restart the cam if you get
a scrambling issue which has resolved this with an irdeto cam. I was
experiencing a descrambling problem probably 3 days after a restart
which is fixed by this patch.

Hi Phil

Thanks for the response. I made the change you requested, and rebooted
the box but the issue is still there. I actually had to reboot for an
unrelated reason - it's not my preferred troubleshooting method!

I've captured the full log where the recording is attempted, and it's
about 100 lines so I have put it up here:

http://web.hisser.org/logs/myth-dvb-1.txt

I'm not sure about the descrambling - I'm not using a CAM as all my
channels are FTA. Please let me know if you would like any other info -
would like to get to the bottom of this so I can finally replace my sat
provider's box!

[mythtv-users] Epia 10K advice

2005-06-22 Thread James Pattinson

Hi All

I have a backend box that's been working for about a month recording
things for me to watch on my computer screen. I now have an EPIA 10k
machine that I'd like to configure as a proper frontend for connection
to a TV.

However I am getting very confused by things like CLE266, Unichrome, and
via drivers, closed or open source, xfree or xorg. I am not new to Linux
but haven't had to do much with X11 in the past.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get this set up as a front end? I
am currently running gentoo on there, but if there's an easier way I
could go fedora or something. What I'm really after is a quick HOWTO to
get it working in the best possible way.

I've also heard that the OSD is only in black and white for EPIA - is
this sorted now?

Thanks

[mythtv-users] Suddenly unable to Tune

I have set up MythTV a couple of months ago and it seems to have been

The only (perhaps) thing that isn't working now is the EPG. I want to

press "i" . Just an empty box.

Also - mythweb shows no channel information.
What can I check for this?

Hi All
I have installed MythTV 0.18 on my gentoo system. My DVB-S card is a
Technisat SkyStar 2 which has been verified working with linux dvb
tools.
It is detected by MythTV but I am unable to scan for channels. It is
unclear what units to use for the frequency and symbol rate - I have
tried various combinations of Hz kHz and MHz with no effect. I just
get Tuning - no lock until it times out.
I use mythtv 0.17 and it works fine, presumably it should also work in
0.18. The units I use are as follows:
- Frequency is in Khz, so for eg 10773MHz is entered as 10773000
- Symbol rate in kSym/sec, so 27500 is entered as 2750
These work very well for me on three different satellites.

If I try and configure channels manually, using the channel editor, I
get no options regarding DVB stuff - I enter the channel number (is
this number important?) and the name, and the video source. Pressing
next however gives me Video 4 Linux options like frequency ID which
doesn't seem relevant at all.
I don't think you can manually specify DVB options - you have to
use the
automatic scanning utilities.

Ben,
Thanks. It's progressing now, hopefully all will be well when I
finish the scan. I put in the figures you suggested, but had to
explicitly set the FEC and Polarisation also.

Cheers again!

[mythtv-users] Trouble setting up DVB
