[mythtv-users] DirecTV Receiver Recommendations?

2005-05-14 Thread Matt D. Robinson
Hi, all. I've been using my MythTV setup off and on, but now I'm
looking for a better DirecTV receiver. The original one I have from
the first DirecTV installation is extremely old. I'd like to get
something that can handle channel changer signal inputs from my
computer/PVR-350 for my U.S. (NTSC) configuration, but also be
reasonably inexpensive if possible.

The most important reason why I'm asking is because of all the ivtv
tuner= types out there. It would be great if someone can recommend a
brand/version that matches a specific tuner type which I can cable up
and get working without a bunch of excess testing.

Any advice anyone can offer would be great. Thanks!

Awesome, thanks, David! I didn't find this page in the Google searches.
I've been alternating the audio/s-video use of my PVR-350, so I've
been using tuner inputs in the near term, but you're right, I don't need it.

Thanks again!

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Jarod's HOWTO for FC3/PVR-350/X - Please Keep Online

2004-12-30 Thread Matt D. Robinson
Actually, I went back last night and verified that 2.6.8-1.521 resolves
the ivtv-fb crashes for TV-Out with PVR-350s, but it doesn't fix the
X through TV-Out problems. So something definitely changed to correct
things. I'd imagine all the fbcon changes had something to do
with it, but I haven't gone through the diffs yet (there are a few
there in doing a brief viewing of the tree).

I also re-built the 2.6.9-1.681 kernel with
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE (in fact, all CONFIG_*_CONSOLE parameters)
set to 'm'. I then tried 0.2.0-rc3b and the current ck100zz drivers,
and also tried ivtvdev_drv.o at 0.6 and 0.7. Nothing's worked so far
as far as the X problem is concerned.

I'm going to work forward on the X revision lists between FC2 and
FC3 (last known) and see if there's something there now.

Re: [mythtv-users] Jarod's HOWTO for FC3/PVR-350/X - Please Take Offline

2004-12-29 Thread Matt D. Robinson
As I said before, I'm trying to help figure out what's broken.
If it can be fixed, then I'm all for it (and I'm doing rebuilds
now to try and see what happened).

I don't believe in put up or shut up -- if it's broken, someone
should say something, and people (including me) should try and help
fix it. If open source and/or open project work revolved around
put up or shut up perspectives, much less would get done and
people would be afraid to give any feedback whatsoever.

Thanks for your enthusiastic response, however.

It was me. My E-mail _should_ have instead asked that there be a
disclaimer, warning, something in the HOWTO instead of being taken
off-line. When I upgraded from a working FC2 configuration to FC3 and
everything broke, I was very, very surprised. At the time, being taken
off-line was my first thought and I ran with it. ** My apologies to
who were offended at the off-line suggestion. **

Jarod has updated his HOWTO to indicate there is a problem. That's really
the best thing until someone (myself or others) figures out what's up.

I've E-mailed Axel and Jarod privately to discuss some of these issues,
what I'm testing, and I'll post as soon as I know more.

Thanks,

[mythtv-users] Jarod's HOWTO for FC3/PVR-350/X - Please Take Offline

2004-12-28 Thread Matt D. Robinson

I've reviewed Jarod's MythTV FC3 HOWTO, using a single PVR-350 in
my TV box (and I had a working base FC2 configuration), and I'm at
a point now where I believe I can say that it just doesn't work yet.
Jarod should take his HOWTO off-line until he's had a chance to fully
walk through it with a PVR-350 so that those of us out there who
are following it don't end up upgrading into a broken configuration
(which we're all doing now).

There are three main problems:

- The ivtv-fb driver isn't up to rc3b yet to fix the problems with
  the module crashes (and even then doesn't work fully);

- X with TV Out is definitely broken; I've tried both the xorg.conf
pointed at from his site, as well as tuning. Modifying the
ivtvdev_drv.o doesn't fix it; changing the firmware doesn't
work; Using either ivtvdev, fbdev, or any other combination is
broken. Changing vga= and video= options doesn't help.

- The new 2.6.9 kernels are breaking in conjunction with ivtv, and
the ck100zz drivers aren't useful anymore.

Until these major problems are fixed, people should be pointed to the
base FC2 instructions (without downloading the FC2 updates, since
you can break your configuration with newer FC2 kernels as well)
until these problems are fixed.

All the previous work is really appreciated from both Jarod, Axel,
John, and everyone else, but this is clearly a time drain so long as
the base FC3/guide configuration doesn't work. This is just my $0.02
from doing this over the past three days and not making much forward
progress (and seeing a few mythtv mailing list E-mails from people
following Jarod's HOWTO and not seeing answers to their questions).

When there's something really working enough to beta test and/or use,
then I'm totally ready to help out. :) Thanks,

Re: [mythtv-users] Jarod's HOWTO for FC3/PVR-350/X - Please Take Offline

2004-12-28 Thread Matt D. Robinson
I definitely tried that (just tried it again with the base as well as
0.2.0-rc3b)
and it doesn't work.

Again, I think this is a fundamental problem right now that needs to be tested
and fixed. I'm willing to test and try things out, build drivers, kernels,
etc.,
but I've had a few private E-mails that reinforce the comments I've made here
saying that yes, there is a problem and it needs to be corrected.

I'm willing to help out, try stuff, tweak code, etc.

Thanks,

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-350 TV-Out - Having Limited Success

2004-12-27 Thread Matt D. Robinson
I tried building and using rc3b and rc3c, but neither worked for me.
Are you sure this fixes the problem?

If there's a vga=whatever option that someone knows (I've tried
vga=normal and vga=extended and neither work) or a video= option,
please let the group know (there are a few of us suffering with this
FC3/Axel's RPMs/Jarod's Guide nightmare with ivtv/ivtv-fb.

|
|I'm running FC3 (2.6.9-1.681_FC3) and have used Jarod's HOWTO to get
| this
|far. My PVR-350 is fairly new and boasts the Type 47 tuner.
|
|Last night I finally was able to successfully get SOMETHING on my
| TV.
|I
|went through the steps in Jarod's guide. I was able to record a
| signal
|off
|of /dev/video and play it back in mplayer...and also view it live
| and
| tune
|to different channels using the ptune-ui applet. I never got a
| clear
|signal
|though. I could see colors and see the picture shifting when
| something
|changed on the screen, but it was all in thin diagonal strips going
|from
|the
|upper left side to the lower right side...with lots of black
| interlaced
|between and around the colored diagonals.
|
|So I stopped messing with that and went on to trying to get it onto
| my
| TV.
|When I start '/sbin/modprobe ivtv' my TV screen goes all green.
| Then
| when
|I
|start '/sbin/modprobe ivtv-fb' my TV gets alternating green/pink or
|green/white snowyish stripes going diagonally down from upper left
| to
|lower
|right. Then I attempted to feed the PVR-350 input straight through
| to
| the
|TV-OUT using 'dd if=/dev/video0 of=/dev/video16 bs=64k'. As soon as
| I
| did
|that I got a ghost image of the TV feed coming through behind the
|green/pink/white stripes. I could see outlines of people and
| objects
| but
|definitely no details. The audio was coming through just fine.
|
|So now...that's where I'm at. Has anyone seen similar issues to
| this
| that
|might help me figure out the problem so I can get this going?
|
|Thanks,
