Re: [mythtv-users] digital sound output

2006-01-16 Thread Mike Schiller
Thanks for your help on this one. I've decided to switch to an older
motherboard I have, and that fixed (nearly) everything. I found (on
this list and others) that I'm not the only one to have had problems
getting alsa to work right on the Asus K8N-E deluxe, and unless anyone
out there can contradict me, I'd recommend to everyone to stay away
from that board for now. My audio problems may stem from the fact
that my kernel and alsa drivers weren't up to date. Unfortunately,
when I update my kernel (via yum upgrade), everything stops working,
and I get the error:

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 4 of device :00:06.0
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 1 of device :00:00.0
PCI: Error while updating region :00:06.0/4 (1001 != f001)
PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #1:[EMAIL PROTECTED] for :01:00.0

>From what I gather, it's an IDE and IDE DMA problem. So you may not
have a problem if you use a SATA drive, but I can't say for sure on
this.

I hope my frustration helps someone else out there.

2006-01-13 Thread Mike Schiller
Thanks for the offer of help. I'm going to do a fresh install today,
and will get back to you tomorrow with all the details of my problem
(I want to make some notes as I go so that I don't misstate anything).
 I do have a couple of quick questions about your setup if you get a
chance..

Are you running Fedora 4?
What kernel are you using?
What version of the alsa-lib rpm do you have installed?
What motherboard do you have -- is it NV4 based with CK804 (alsamixer
will tell you if it is a CK804)?

Thanks again,
Mike

[mythtv-users] digital sound output

2006-01-12 Thread Mike Schiller
I've had substantial problems configuring my motherboard's (Asus k8n-e
deluxe with the nvidia ck804 + rt alc850) sound output to work
properly. I see others have had problems with this setup, and I'm
torn as to whether I should invest even more time to document the
problem and make a proper post requesting help, or if I should simply
move on to another sound card. To test the waters, I was hoping some
folks out there could let me know if they had trouble configuring any
of the following 7.1 channel spdif capable sound cards:

1st Choice
--
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Sound Card
Model: SB0610< Is this a new model?  I couldn't
   find much info on it
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7293822&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01053&id=1118841165481

Montego DDL Sound Card - Retail

Please note, that specifically, I'm looking to have xine or mplayer
pass the surround sound from a dvd (or a dvd imported by mythtv) to my
stereo over the optical (or coax for the soundblaster) spdif output,
and I want the stereo output from recorded programs to go to my stereo
over the same optical cable.

Thanks in advance for all of your help. Also, any .asoundrc files or
tips would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [mythtv-users] ide controller advice

2005-12-25 Thread Mike Schiller
OK, but can anyone recommend a cheap IDE controller, or does anyone
have experience with the two IDE controllers I mentioned, for non-RAID
use, since I'm simply using LVM to get a large volume size and don't
care if I have the redundancy of raid. I'm especially interested to
know if any of the two models (or other cheap ones) have SMART support
and will power down my drives after a period of inactivity (my
IT/ITE8212 --sorry for mislabeling it 82812 earlier -- doesn't seem to
do this).

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [mythtv-users] ide controller advice

2005-12-25 Thread Mike Schiller
I've been contemplating buying one of the following two IDE cards to
replace my IT/ITE82812 controller in an LVM (no raid, just extra
space) setup. The things I don't like about the IT/ITE82812, are its
lack of SMART support, and the fact that my disks are always on. I'd
like for the disks to automatically power down when not in use to
reduce the heat generation (unless, someone has a reason for me not to
-- disks don't do this by themselves, do they?).

I was wondering if anyone has tried the ...

$14.40 Koutech IO-PIR133 PCI IDE Controller Card
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16815104214

...or the ...

PROMISE ULTRA133 TX2 PCI IDE Controller Card
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16816102007

... ?

Do these support support SMART, or powering down the disks?

Thanks,
Mike

[mythtv-users] ide controller advice

2005-12-14 Thread Mike Schiller
I'm looking for some advice in purchasing a new PCI IDE controller.
In my current backend setup, I have a pci IDE raid controller
(IT/ITE82812 based) with 4 hard disks attached. I picked up the IDE
card for ~$30 at a computer show a couple of years ago. The drives
are of differing size, and are configured as an LVM group -- I'm not
actually using the raid features of the board. Unfortunately, the IDE
controller doesn't support SMART, nor is it capable of powering down
my hard disks when they're not in use.

I'd like to replace my IDE controller with a new one (I use the one on
my motherboard for the OS disk, and a couple of optical drives), and
am wondering what has worked well for others in the mythtv community.
My basic requirements are:

- cheap. Definitely under $100, preferably under $60.
- can power down my disks when they've been idle for a while.
- SMART capability
- stock Fedora 4 kernel compatibility.
- RAID -- OK, not a requirement because I don't currently use it, but
it might be nice in the future.

Thanks for any advice you have to offer,
Mike

[mythtv-users] some atrpms packages for x86_64 actually built for i686?

2005-12-06 Thread Mike Schiller
I'm having a problem installing the mythtv-suite on an x86_64 machine
running Fedora 4.

After adding the atrpms.repo to my /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory
according to Jarod's guide, I run:

yum install mythtv-suite

Everything appears to install fine. as a normal user, I launch
mythfrontend, and am able to configure mythfrontend to access the
database running on my master back end. The setup window, exits, then
the normal mythfrontend screen appears, and immediately disappears. I
get the following errors printed to my console:

Conflict in /usr/lib/qt-3.3/plugins/inputmethods/libqimsw-multi.so:
  Plugin uses incompatible Qt library!
  expected build key "x86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config", got "i686
Linux g++-4.* full-config".
Conflict in /usr/lib/qt-3.3/plugins/inputmethods/libqimsw-none.so:
  Plugin uses incompatible Qt library!
  expected build key "x86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config", got "i686
Linux g++-4.* full-config".
Conflict in /usr/lib/qt-3.3/plugins/inputmethods/libqsimple.so:
  Plugin uses incompatible Qt library!
  expected build key "x86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config", got "i686
Linux g++-4.* full-config".
Conflict in /usr/lib/qt-3.3/plugins/inputmethods/libqxim.so:
  Plugin uses incompatible Qt library!
  expected build key "x86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config", got "i686
Linux g++-4.* full-config".

I then uninstall mythdvd (yum remove mythdvd), but still get the error:

Bus error

Then, I run:

yum remove mythgallery
yum remove mythphone
yum remove mythmusic

Now, I'm able to run the frontend and watch live tv, recordings, and
videos, but can't listen to music, play dvd's, or browse photos. Does
anyone know a (preferably RPM) way to get these features back?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [mythtv-users] yum difficulties FC4 mythtv i386

2005-12-06 Thread Mike Schiller
OK, I figured out the public key problem. The solution was at the top
of the same web page I mention in my last post. If you have the same
problem try:

rpm --import http://ATrpms.net/RPM-GPG-KEY.atrpms

Of course, for every problem I solve, another crops up. When I launch
the frontend on my x86_64 machine, it tries to connect to my i386
backend and segfaults. The error messages I see are:

mythtv: could not connect to socket
mythtv: No such file or directory
.
.
.
segfault or Bus Error

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: [mythtv-users] yum difficulties FC4 mythtv i386

2005-12-06 Thread Mike Schiller
I had the same problem on x86_64, even though the same installation
method worked for me on an i386 box just last week. It appears that
something has changed at atrpms, and that the atrpms.repo file on
Jarod's guide isn't yet updated.

Try deleting the contents of /etc/yum.repos.d/atrpms.repo and
replacing the text with:

[atrpms]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - ATrpms
baseurl=http://dl.atrpms.net/fc$releasever-$basearch/atrpms/stable

I found this answer at:
http://atrpms.net/install.html

I should mention that it still isn't quite working for me. After all
of the requisite packages have downloaded I get the error message:

Public key for ffmpeg-0.4.9-10_cvs20050612.rhfc4.at.x86_64.rpm is not installed

So, please let me know if you're able to install without similar
errors. Does anyone know if this is my problem, or a problem with the
repository?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: FC3 rpms, mythweb, apache, and 2G+ files

2005-03-10 Thread Mike Schiller
Is there any chance someone out there has had any luck getting Apache
on a 32 bit machine to serve up 2+GB files since this thread was last
updated?

Thanks,
Mike

[mythtv-users] PVR-350 audio during playback using mythtv %s

2005-01-10 Thread Mike Schiller
I've got MythTv up and running on a PVR-350 card (the one with the
new-new grey remote and the SAA7129,SAA7115,MSP4448,NTSC/NTSC-J 48132
Rev 268) under FC3 with X-Windows running on the PVR-350's TV out.
For watching TV and recorded TV, this setup works great. The video
looks good, and the audio sounds good (audio output comes from the
PVR-350 outputs). However, when running X on the PVR-350 output,
mplayer can not maintain an acceptable frame rate. Consequently, I
changed Setup->Media Settings->Video Settings->Player
Settings->Default Player from mplayer to:

mythtv %s

Now, I get great video when watching imported videos, but have no
audio from either the PVR-350 audio out, nor my sound card audio out.

My /etc/modprobe.conf, /etc/rc.local, and /etc/X11/xorg.conf are pasted below.

Does anyone have suggestions for getting the audio output working?

I don't think this is the problem as I did try one stereo mpeg, but
can the mythtv %s displaying to the PVR-350 play the 5.1 channel sound
of an imported DVD on the stereo output of the PVR-350?

Thanks for your help,
Mike
