Re: [mythtv-users] RAID suggestions
I'm sort of looking at a 3ware 7506-4LP but I hear the performance isn't all that and its more for redudancy. I have one of these cards installed, and it works fine in a 4x250GB configuration. Things to be aware of: each drive is a master; there are 4 IDE cables coming off of the card, which presents challenges. I have it in slot 6 of my motherboard, so it's at the bottom of the case, and it's tight down there. Putting it in any of the other slots on the motherboard will eat at least one PCI slot just because of how much space the IDE cables take. Even with rounded IDE, it's still not easy. The card doesn't support online capacity expansion, so if you (I) ever decide that you want to go from 250GB to 400GB IDE drives I'd have to copy everything off first to external storage, build the array with the new drives, then copy everything back. The speed of the card is perfectly fine for SD; I have 7 PVR-x50's writing to a central NFS mount. Good things: the card does everything in onboard hardware, so it doesn't task the host CPU with parity calculation. It's configurable as a bootable device, so even my /boot partition is on the RAID-5. Driver support from 3ware is good, and it has some nice web page-based administration software. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Yes, you need: alias char-major-81 videodev alias char-major-81-0 ivtv alias char-major-81-1 ivtv (assuming your first two capture cards are ivtv) and nothing else for the PVR-x50's. Or does ivtv insert this for you? And what about the Avermedia M179, is this autodetected as well? You have to manually configure the M179. See Jarod Wilson's guide for details: http://www.wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php . I would consider the ivtv mailing list and wiki the authoritative source on ivtv questions rather than Jarod's FC guide, or even the MythTV HOWTO. If you check the ivtv resources you'll see that as of 0.4.0 the M179 is autodetected. Re: [mythtv-users] Slighty OT: Pundit PSU about to die.
Has anyone had any luck replacing the Pundit PSU fan? I've seen some posts where an external PSU has been used but I'd rather keep things inside the case. I tried finding a replacement powersupply and wasn't successful, so I opened up the existing powersupply and replaced the fan. It just _barely_ was larger than the exising powersupply fan, so it was a tight squeeze. The fan also had a 4 wire drive connector, so I had to connect it externally. You could probably cut the existing wires and just splice in if you'd like. Also, am I in any danger of getting instantly spikey hair by poking around inside the PSU (once it's switched off, obviously) "No user serviceable parts inside", so if you fry yourself it's all your own fault. However, if you are going to open it I'd leave it unplugged from the mains for a while to let any capacitors discharge first. Finally, even after all that, the Pundit ran for another few months before a power even killed the powersupply all-together. I'll probably end up with an external powersupply that has those plug-style connectors so I only use the cables that I need instead of having 60 wires coming out of it. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

And when a frontend requests to view that program the slave will stream the file to the client. Re: [mythtv-users] Pundit-R / PVR-150/250 - it doesn't fit...
The Pundit-R already has the riser card so the PVRs are parallel to the motherboard. The 150 low profile looks like a very reasonable solution. Not, I think, as well tested as the other PVR cards but worth a shot. The 150-LP has a low profile PCI bracket, so you're not going to be able to secure the card in the slot. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I've looked at the HW MPEG2 encoders but MPEG2 seems to take up too much room. I tried using the SW MPEG2 encoding in MythTV and within one day my 160GB disk was filled. Even though I turned on automatic transcoding to MPEG4, the recordings just seemed to get ahead of the transcoding. Once the disk was full, it couldn't transcode any more. Do the HW encoders produce smaller video files? I don't remember the exact file size but I think a 2.5 hour program was something like 26GB! (640x480) There is no "software MPEG2 encoding" in MythTV. Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-150 status?
What if you have two pvr-150's? will the second video be real then? or will there be /dev/video0-3? You'll have /dev/video0 with Tuner 0 and 1, /dev/video1 with Tuner 0 and 1, etc. Ask over on the ivtv list why there are multiple tuner, composite and s-video devices created for each device. You should really only use the lowest numbered one in each category though, especially with the Tuner inputs. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-150 status?
That said it could all be smoke and mirrors. Maybe there is only a single tuner and maybe software is remembering which channel to show me. I don't know. The important issue would be setting it up to use both and then seeing if the MPEG encoder will encode both at the same time. Even with two tuners if the hardware encoder only works with one then it's not of as much value. I'll bet that you're just seeing an artifact from the ivtv driver. There really is only one tuner, and you'll only be able to record one program. Setup a recording, then while it's running go into Live TV mode and see what happens. Unless something has radically changed that PVR-150 will only be able to use one input at a time, either composite, svideo or tuner. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-150 status?
Not sure. the most obvious good feature about the 150 is contrary to the Hauppage site which says the '150 is the priced reduced version of the 250' it appears that the 150 with the 0.3.3k driver is actually dual tuner. However I haven't tried recording from the second tuner yet. And you won't be able to record anything from the second tuner, because the 150 is _not_ a dual-tuner device, unlike the PVR-500, which is. Any "Tuner 1" you find on a PVR device isn't really there, in the same way that my PVR-250's don't have 4 S-Video inputs. As stated in the HOWTO, only the lowest numbered device in each class is actually there. So on a PVR-500, you get /dev/video0 and /dev/video1 and you'd use the Tuner 0 on each one. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-250 is hot! hot! hot!
In my experience, PVR cards work when very hot, but not forever. I see the tuner become unstable and noisy, then I start getting zero length recordings until I reload ivtv, and eventually it won't encode at all. I have four cards, some are first generation designs because they have heatsinks on them. What I've done is to take a 8CM case fan and have it sitting on the motherboard blowing air onto the cards. I used to have the fan sitting on top of the cards, but there was no good way to secure it there, and it would start vibrating. After a few days it would vibrate itself almost off of the cards. Next plan is to do a field-expedient case mod and just cut a hole into the side of the case and put a 12CM fan in there so I don't need to run with the cover off. The newer cards, like the PVR-150 don't have a heatsink or a fan (unlike the M179's that I have), and I don't know how hot they run. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I do mean software raid (md). Reading the archives I've come to understand that hardware (real or fake) raid 5 is a waste of time for most mythtv applications. My personal opinion is that RAID5 _is_ useful, if you consider the tradeoff of money vs. time. How long would it take you to re-encode 200 DVD's or 500 CD's? While not everyone has such a large library of content, not having to recreate it in case of a disk failure is a big win for me. So, it's really a matter of personal choice. Re: [mythtv-users] LVM RAID 5 partition schemes
You really, really want to split into a backend / frontend configuration once you start throwing drives into a case due to heat and noise. If you do end up using a larger case, I'm pretty happy with this: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=370698 It's a Coolermaster 4-in-3 hard drive module. It lets you install 4 hard drives in the space of 3 full-height drive bays, and it has a big 12cm fan on the front, so the fan spins fairly slowly. It fits into a standard ATX case, not just the coolermaster series. My existing case has a bunch of 3.5" internal drive bays, but only two of them end up in front of the 8cm fans that you can install on the front of the case, so this is a better solution for me, and it makes it easier to route the cables. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Now, how can I tell what card and/or tuner is linked to which device? The cards are usually loaded closest to the AGP slot down, but that isn't universal. The third and fourth "cards" initialized are your PVR-500 (shows up as a pair of 150s), the first and second are you PVR-250s, couldn't tell you which is which though. I've also found that writing down the serial number that's on a sticker on the card is helpful; when ivtv initializes it displays the serial number, and the ivtv initialization order will end up being the same as the /dev/videoX order. At least for individual cards like the PVR-250's. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] Mythtv on FC3
the nfslockfile is a file put in there by nfs. leave it alone. Yes, leave it alone, but no, the lockfile isn't put there by nfs. It's used by the backends to determine whether or not they're using a shared directory structure. You might be using samba, for example. When I implemented it I assumed that everyone would be using NFS, which is why it's called that. Everyone will have a nfslockfile in their directory, even if they only have one system. from the error message it looks like you have a / duplicated before the buffer file. That doesn't matter.
