Josh,
This tip works like a charm! In my case, ripping cd's froze in approx. one third of all attempts. Ergo: searching the archives works. I think this tip is worth including in troubleshooting sections about getting mythtv up and running...

I havenow set it tot low quality (indeed, that's good enough). There is some improvement but not spectacular. I would prefer that the raw ripping stepping is done as fast as possible and the compression is done later in the background so that I can continue using myth. A possible answer to that is of course Well, go ahead and code it yourself but since i'm not that good at programming I guess I just have to wait (or live with it)...

If that's the case, wouldn't ripping the raw data first and converting at an appropriate time (and priority) be a smarter approach?

[mythtv-users] cd ripping slow? - What's to be expected.

Dear all,
I've recently put together a setup with fairly decent specifications, see below. As far as I can judge right now everything works ok. However, ripping CDs (to mp3) takes quite a while, about 10 minutes. I would say that at 48x speed this could be done much faster. SinceI can't do much else with mythtv during the ripping process I would like to configure things as much as possible for optimum speed. 


Could someone please enlighten me how long riping an average CD would take?

I had a similar problem. In my case, entering the frequencies (in Khz!!!) rather than the channel numbers did the trick.

I fixed it by entering the frequencies (in KHz!) directly rather than the channel numbers.

I've been trying to get MythTV to work for the past few days but
somehow I don't get it to tune to channels. I'm using a single machine
with a PVR-150 non-MCE.

I'm fairly new to linux, guess that doesn't help much...

What I've done so far is:
Installed MyhthTV using Jarods FC4 guide. I've stayed as close to the
instructions as possible. I have filled the database using
myhtfilldatabase --manual using tv_grab_nl_pdb with the information of
two channels.

When I choose WatchTV I get a non-tuned image. I can faintly see a TV image so I know 
'something' is happening... Selecting channel 1 or 2 results in the image freezing for a second or two but that's it. 
I tried 
# /usr/lib/ivtv/ptune-ui.pl 
# mplayer -vo xv /dev/video0

but apparently ptune-ui.pl is not included in the package I installed (?!). Now when I use 


ivtv-tune -f715.75
I get
/dev/video0: 715.750 MHz (Signal Detected)

here's yet another n00b: is buying the non-MCE version worth the approx. 17 euro's ( USD 20)difference in price? I guess the alternative would be buying/building a Remote control unit with a receiver which seems to be hard to accomplish for that kind of money...
