Re: [mythtv-users] Adding movies to MythTV

2005-12-04 Thread Trent Albright
From the mythTv-Howto:

Contributions to the HOWTO are welcome, especially if you find a
grammatical or spelling error, or if the wording of something is just
plain confusing.

If you'd like to make a new contribution, feel free to email it to me
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED], but as the maintainer I retain the
right to edit or choose not to use your submission.

If you would like to submit an update or contribution, please send it
as either SGML or as plain text. NO HTML. The source used to create
the HOWTO is in SGML / Linuxdoc. See the Linuxdoc HOWTO at
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Howtos-with-LinuxDoc.html for information on
the linuxdoc format itself, or look at the mythtv-HOWTO.sgml file as
an example.
Just a couple thoughts here:

(1) I wouldn't waste my time writing up a bunch of documentation
without talking to rkulagow first. Seems like it would really suck to
spend a ton of time writing up something only to find out there's no
interest. Maybe I'm misunderstanding here though, is he solely in
charge of all the documentation? Or are there other venues for
submitting docs?

(2) Are there any good SGML wysiwyg editors? IMO limiting the format
like this isn't helping move the documentation forward. If someone has
to learn SGML tags, its going to be less likely to find people to
help. Lots more people know HTML, and there are many good HTML editors
around. The easier it is to add documentation, the more that will get
written.

Maybe the documentation should be in wiki? Just some thoughts...

  For music you need to use the MythMusic application. For photos you

Re: [mythtv-users] Help with new Kernel

2005-12-01 Thread Trent Albright
Also, at least in my setup of FC4, if you log on as root and read your
email, you will see daily messages that describe which packages are
available for updates. You can also use /etc/yum.conf to automatically
exclude named packages, for example mine looks like this:

$ less /etc/yum.conf
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
pkgpolicy=newest
distroverpkg=redhat-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1
retries=20
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=0
exclude=urw-fonts* lftp* kernel*

When
I do a 'yum update' it will ask to confirm the update, I say N if I see
any major changes like new kernels or ivtv versions etc.
I do wait 3-4 WEEKS minimum before updating a kernel.
Unless I see something major in the changelog that I could benefit
from, what's the point of risking destabilizing a perfectly working
system by updating kernels or drivers? If it works, don't touch
it is my rule.

  /boot/grub/grub.conf and change the default= parameter to your older
  kernel. 0 is the first kernel listed in grub.conf , 1 is the 2nd,
  etc. So if your grub.conf looks like the

  infamous kernel version that destroyed ide drives and or damaged CPU.
  The latest is not really the greatest in Linux, the almost latest is the

[mythtv-users] mixer being mucked with

2005-11-30 Thread Trent Albright
When I launch MythTV, I execute the following command prior:

/usr/sbin/alsactl restore

If I then jump straight to using MythVideo, and watch a video with
mplayer, the sound level is fine. However, once I go back to live TV,
the mixer is lowered again.

If I jump straight to live TV, the mixer is also lowered again.

These seems to indicate to me that MythTv is mucking with my mixer, and
lower the volume? Anybody else experienced this, or have a suggestion
about how I could fix it?

Thanks...
