[mythtv-users] Newbie - Feeding mythtv back end with VLC-like network streams ?

2006-01-04 Thread Erik PROST

Hello there,

I am quite new to MythTV and
found no anwser to the following question, after doing a bunch of research on
Google.

Is there a way to run MythTV
with time shift, recording features, ...

- without any tuner card

- and with network streams
such as ones delivered by VLC/VLM from videolan ?

A few words about the
technical context might be useful : I already have a live TV streaming box,
named Freebox, that is able to feed a VLC client running on my computer (see http://adsl.free.fr/tv/multiposte/,
french language but screen dumps at the end should be self explanatory). A
Freebox can send up to 4 or 8 streams at the same time, depending on the box
version. Therefore, I do not see any interest in buying one or more tuner cards
if I can feed MythTV with network streams coming my Freebox, knowing that it
uses a fairly standard encoding (recognized by VLC).

Now the next steps would be
to :

- feed MythTV with up to 8
video streams coming from my Freebox;

- customize MythTV in order
to configure channels.

Is there any chance to
achieve this ? Thank you, Erik.

You either need a box sitting in front of the linksys or some sort of
caller-id modem that can also get the info. The original poster wrote an
app that would sniff for SIP traffic which is basically the voip caller
id info and send it out. the previous poster was using a caller-id modem
to read caller-id info off the analog line

[mythtv-users] MythTV on Itanium (IA-64)?

2005-11-26 Thread Erik Dooper
Hi,

maybe a weird question - I can get my hands on a dual Itanium 64-bit
box, w/ 4GB mem for little $$. I have been looking for a decent server,
since my PIII-933 is about to give up, and this came across my path.

Does somebody have any experiences running MythTV (backend only with a
PVR 250 and a PVR500MCE) on such an architecture (IA-64)? How dependent
is MythTV on the IA-32 architecture?

regards,

Erik

you could just hijack the channel change "script" functionality and
create a user job when the recording completes. The problem of
back-to-back recordings is still possible. maybe some clever file
locking scheme between a channel change (start) and user job (end) could
do the trick.

No, there is no parity in a raid 10 array. The resilence comes from the
raid1 parts(mirrors). Yes, it does require drives added in pairs, but
drives are relatively cheap. You can add raid1 arrays in degraded mode,
so in theory, you can create a raid10 array with only half the drives. I
used this to create my array with only 4 disks while I waited for the
drives to go on sale again. It's riskier, but there seem to be
"give-away" sales every couple of months.

So, presumably, you want to hook up a usb-to-serial cable from your PC
serial port to the usb port of the cable box. The issue is that the
cable box expects to be the usb host and so does a PC, whereas the
keyboard is the usb "client". I'm not sure how a usb-to-serial adapter
presents itself to another usb host, but if it's only designed to work
with usb clients, I'd guess that a driver would have to be written to
emulate a usb client through the serial port, if it's even possible.

That would be ideal, and would certainly be an inexpensive option. The
only box I came across that actually says it emulates a usb kbd from
either usb or serial connection to the PC host is a couple hundred
bucks.

I'll look into how it works, but a "port" converter may just connect the
wires correctly to allow communications.

are you talking about a USB IR xmit/rcv device? Wouldn't the cable box
itself already have an IR receiver?

My cable box has a usb port that will take a USB keyboard to control the
channel changes. I guessed that was what you were referring to.

I've used the www.irblaster.info connected to my serial port to try and
control my cable box. It sounds like that's what you're trying to do
over a USB connection on your PC? I figured you really wanted to go
USB-to-USB. My posts in the thread I linked above, along with the older
thread I posted there talk about usb<->usb problems.

[mythtv-users] Possible Hardware Configuration

2005-11-01 Thread Erik J. Soballe

Hey everyone,

Just wondering what you guys thought of this setup.

2 PVR-150 (low profile version)
512 mb pc 2700 ram
250 gb 7200 rpm ata 100 hard drive
Athlon 800 (soon to be replaced by an Athlon XP 1700+)
Antec Minuet case
Asus A7V-400 Mx micro-atx motherboard
Geforce 5200(low profile) (for tv out)

What do you guys think about this setup? Specifically, is it
ridiculously hard to configure the pvr-150s? Also will this CPU allow
me to watch live tv and encode at the same time? How about playback?
Is the 5200 a good card for TV out? Anyone have experiences with this
motherboard/chipset? Thanks in advance.

From what i can understand of the code the MainServer::endConnection
deletes

the PlaybackSock instance without checking any thread locks whatsoever.
Then the scheduler thread would naturally run into problems when it is
periodically checking

I've done exactly this, though I did do a raid1 for swap too.

Here's where I diverge, and haven't seen mentioned yet. I went the
raid10 route instead. with raid5, you can lose up to 1 drive in the
array. any more and you lose the array. With raid10 you can lose half,
in theory, as long as they're not in the same raid1 set. I've got 6x250g
disks as 3 raid1 mirrors and then raid0 the 3 raid1 arrays.

I have no desire to deal with failed disks. I want to minimize the
impact of any failures as much as possible.

haven't gone sata yet, but my mobo has 2 sata connectors. Right now I'm
using the onboard ide and two dual channel ide cards. All the drives are
masters

This works well, you can specify a disk called missing when you create
the array and it will run degraded. This is how I created a 6 disk
raid10 array with only 4 disks until the 250gb's went on sale again.
Granted I had a bigger risk if something failed, but it was only a few
months before drives drop in price again.

I think for the purposes of the initial poster they are referring to
the PVR150 MCE (model 1042) which is pretty much an OEM white box
PVR150 with FM radio, RCA audio jacks, no IR chips/jack, and no
included remote/blaster.

The PVR150 retail edition (model 1045) comes with a remote/Ir blaster,
has a 1/8" stereo minijack for audio input (*sigh*), and a pretty
box/warranty.

There is, as Carl points out a new model 1062 retail "kit" which is a
PVR150MCE card with a MCE compatible/certified USB IR
remote/blaster/etc... designed for MCE 2005.

To the original poster... If you just need the card itself and have no
need for the remote control/blaster or have designs on other
remote/etc... the pvr150MCE is pretty much "driver compatible" with
the retail edition and you can save yourself a few bucks.

What version of mythtv, distro and xmame do you have?

When mythgame can't launch xmame it will throw up this message as well
as when the version is not actually supported. mythgame for 0.18.1 is
known to work with xmame from version > 0.36 through version < 0.100
(but it probably works with 0.100 too). The sweet spot is something like
version >= 0.87 through version < 0.100. So if you have one of these
versions I suggest jacking up the logging on mythfrontend and seeing
what it tried to use for an xmame command and then running that command
by hand as the user that is running mythfrontend and seeing what
happens.

Depends on what capture cards you want to use with it. The ivtv capture

my EPIA (via)

One thing you should look into is the powersafe funtion of the

The project switched to subversion last summer, you can get details
here: http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/ but you can't add or change anything
because only a few developers have that privilege. Instead, check out a
local copy, make your changes it it and then create a trac ticket with
your changes attached (use svn diff) and eventually one of the
developers will review and commit it.

There has been quite a bit of discussion on how to do translations over

They are "driver" compatible. The MCE version doesn't come with
remote/ir blaster and HAS an FM tuner. There's subtle audio jack
differences but it's pretty much made in the same factory with the

I'm assuming this is the difference between software encoding cards
(like Todd's 10 dollar job) and hardware encoding cards like the
pvr250.

You'll most definitely want to hook your DN's audio out to the
PVR250's audio inputs NOT the soundcard's input.

Forgive my ignorance I'm looking at:

http://www.copperbox.com/lite/fusion5.php

Which has a little table to describe the difference between the fusion
5 "lite" and "gold"

Fusion-HDTV-5 Gold Plus | Fusion-HDTV-5 Lite
ADC Conexant 2388x 10-bit | Conexant 878 8-bit
Demodulator 5th Gen. LG |5th Gen. LG

Does the ADC 10bit vs 8 bit Conexant chip even factor in if recording
OTA ATSC or QAM? I wouldn't think so, but i'm confused or only have a
very limited understanding.

In any case, I've been wondering about the Fusion 5 cards and linux
support and glad the original poster brought this up (and the
excellent responses that ensued, of course!)

random thought: If you have analog cable, and they didn't put a
filter specifically on your line, you *may* be getting digital QAM 256
signals (and therotically HDTV broadcast channels in the clear)
without specifically subscribing to digital cable. It really depends.
If you have cable internet in additiona to your analog cable this may
likely be the case. You're just missing digital cable set top box (or
QAM tuner for unencrypted stuff).

It's really a crapshoot, but if you ahve the HD3000 already it's worth
a shot, eh? I'm about to return my HD capable (no firewire) digital
cable box and cancel digital cable service because I dont' use it and
the HD line up is pathetic! (no FOX no ABC! gross, I'm rigging an uber
antenna darnit!) But I digress... give it a shot with the HD3000 and
the DVB drivers, maybe you'll get lucky.

BTW I have no idea re: the legality of what I'm proposing, you're on
your own/disclaimers apply... but it's the equivalent of having analog
cable and pluggin in your ATSC/QAM capable HDTV (like I have) and
having some unencrypted local broadcast HDTV stations being picked up
via the QAM tuner.

My vote is for door number #3... svideo and stereo RCA audio from the
Dish Network STB to the PVR250's corresponding inputs. (I assume you
already have the pvr250 as you reference it specifically?)

You'll want/need an IR blaster so that LIRC/MythTV can control the
Dish network receiver/STB automagically without your intervention ;)

re: #1b you can't really take the satellite signal directly (bypassing
the DN STB) with the pvr250... You could hypothetically do it with a
FTA DVB Satellite card like the Nova-S BUT (and it's a big but!)
there's no legal way for you to identify your DN subscription and
decode/descramble/decrypte the Dish network satellite HENCE the need
of the dish network receiver and re-encoding the analog output via
PVR250 inputs *phew*. (hopefuly that ramble doesn't confuse the issue
too much for you)

[mythtv-users] OT: Yet another Wiki->BYOPVR contest PVR150||MVP||Fusion 5 lite

2005-09-26 Thread Erik Pettersen
Hi all,

I've started yet another wiki/faq, because that's what the interweb
really needs, is another disparate/separate half baked store of random
bits of information, right? :) Mostly it's because the byopvr forum
get's innundated with the same questions ( can I use a PVR150MCE
without Windows MCE 2005? Is there a digital cable tuner card? How
do I hook up my PVR to Dish Network/DirecTV? Mommy, where do tv
listings come from? What software should I use?)

I'm hoping for something a little more holistic and encompassing of
all HTPC/PVR topics, regardless of platform, but I could really use a
hand as I clearly don't know everything and can't document
*everything*. I'm really more of a cook book linux user (gasp!) so
that's one area that really needs a lot of help.

So... I'm running a little contest on BYOPVR to reward/entice the
"best" contributor the FAQ/Wiki. I've got a pretty broad sense of
what constitutes participation and the winner could either contribute
one or two really awesome article on explaining everything there is to
know about IR Blasters with links to every brand/resource and pretty
demonstrative graphics OR simply the person who makes several small
refinements/improvements to existing pages. Vanity project pages are
welcome to (i.e. if you needed a place to describe your setup and
catalog your experience but never bothered to setup your own
webhost/blog/project page)

Any ways I rambling again... basically I'll give away your choice of
PVR150 (retail), MediaMVP, or Dvico Fusion 5 lite to the person who
makes the best/most contributions to the FAQ/Wiki between now and the
end of October. I'll ship the prize to USA, Canada, & the UK.

Here's the forum post with more details:
http://forum.byopvr.com/dvr/index.php/topic,3554.0.html

Here's the Wiki/Faq itself
http://www.diy-pvr-dvr-htpc.com/index.php/Main_Page

Small but hopefully growing list of current topics:
http://www.diy-pvr-dvr-htpc.com/index.php/Special:Allpages

The linux and mythTV pages could really use some of your guys touch ;)
http://www.diy-pvr-dvr-htpc.com/index.php/Linux
http://www.diy-pvr-dvr-htpc.com/index.php/MythTV

I'm more interested in content than style, so if you aren't familiar
with wiki's conventions just shlop the text in there and someone else
will pretty it up. Oh and the wiki does require a login (sorry).

I hope this isn't too off topic and not too self promotional in
nature. I'm ready for my textual smack down if it is, just thought
i'd open the "contest" to the MythTV user community *shrug*

Re: [mythtv-users] Slightly OT: Media MVP - $40 at Radio Shack - YMMV

2005-09-26 Thread Erik Pettersen
http://www.byopvr.com/displayarticle461.html

My understanding is that it is nationwide. Although the mediaMVP
isn't being discontinued I get the sense that Radio Shack is making
room for the forthcoming MediaMVP wireless version.

Fat Wallet Thread:
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=518804

Although it's probably best to run the CAT5 if you can, you can use a
wireless gaming adapter/wireless bridge to do the same thing. Or
firmware mod a linksys wrt54g to be an uber wireless bridge for much
cheaper than those xbox wireless adapters or the like. :)

Re: [mythtv-users] Question on viewing digital signals on non-digital TV

2005-09-24 Thread Erik Pettersen
There are ATSC/DTV set top boxes on the market (to service those "HD
Ready" Tv's that don't have a tuner...)

Sidenote: I also hear people are snatching up old VOOM satellite boxes
(since VOOM the service is defunct now, right?) and just using the
ATSC tuner part for a relatively cheap solution... but that's kinda a
tangent...

So, yeah.. hypothetically if you just get an OTA HDTV/ATSC set top box
AND it has svideo output you could hook it up to a normal TV...
although I don't entirely see why you'd want to :)

After I basically did it the hard/painful manual way... I found
Christiaan Lutzers excellent little utility...

found via this discussion

It scan through all the pids and stuff and when it found a valid one
(I believe) it would record a 30 second sample. IIRC it was pretty
easy to figure out from there ;)

I usually just SD vs HD by size of the file... *shrug*

Re: [mythtv-users] Can not get my HD-3000 to work

2005-09-24 Thread Erik Pettersen
I think we need more information.. I assume you want to tune ATSC OTA
HDTV (hows that for acronym soup!) and not analog/NTSC.

I assume you've been to a resource like http://www.antennaweb.org
and found out whether or not there are HDTV stations broadcasting in
your area, and have a sufficient antenna attached to the HD3000 and
have it oriented correctly...

When I was playing with my HD-3000 card with the latest Knoppmyth It
loaded the DVB drivers *automagically* for me =P I didn't have much
luck with MythTV proper (for multitude of reasons, and when I get back
on the horse I'll be in better shape to tackle that) BUT I was able to
succesfully test both OTA HDTV and QAM 256 via cable by following the
command line tests in these posts on the HD3000 forum:

http://www.pchdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=693

http://www.xmission.com/~pchdtv/forum/viewtopic.php?t=688

If I opened up multiple shells/terminals and set it up like they
described I could tune stations and cat the results to a .ts or mpeg
file which I could view via xine or mplayer

There is a little bit of a steep learning curve at first, but
eventually I got the hang of it and maybe learned a thing or two...
(or not...) and at least proved my card worked and got to poke around
to see what QAM channels my cable co had in the clear...

Re: [mythtv-users] 1st Myth Box Setup

2005-09-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
One thought/suggestion:

I'm of the opinion that if you want to record BOTH ATSC/HDTV and
NTSC/regular cable you'll probably be best of, IMHO, with a separate
HDTV card (like the HD-3000) from the analog tuner card... maybe a
PVR150 AND a HD3000 if budget allows?

I strongly think for most PVR'ing a hardware encoding tuner card for
NTSC is preferred way to go... (the NTSC part of the HD-3000 or most
HDTV cards relies on the main cpu for encoding SDTV)

This won't work... you'd want the split BEFORE the cable box for analog cable.

that actually scrambles analog and requires cable box to view anythign

Re: [mythtv-users] Beginners question

2005-09-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
You'd need two cable boxes... if you split the cable after the cable
box you'll just get two versions of the same channel =P

I think what I'd do is confirm what cable I have or didn't have, if I
were you... I'd run (temporarily) coax straight from the wall to the
TV (assuming your TV has a TV tuner most standard definition TV sets
do) and use the TV's tuner/autoscan to see what "analog" cable
stations you get.

I have the lowest tier digital cable, and it's not even worth it for
me (for the shows I record) to bother slaving the cable box... I just
tape stations under 80 (for my cable system, yours may vary) via
analog cable, which is happily split within reason multiple times
BEFORE the cable box.

So, I'd figure out what was available via straight coax/analog... and
then decide what you want to do. But if you want to record one show
via cable box, while concurrently watching another show that requires
a cable box, you'll need 2 cable boxes...

I started working on a FAQ re: that topic but didn't get too far

What tuner card (if any) are you using, as that might be a consideration.

I know this will probably get me boo'd off the list... but are you
sure your stability problems stem from the software/OS? Although I
think you'll find knoppmyth/MythTV to be very cool, but if you're

something of that ilk... the symptom *may* follow you to linux/mythtv.

Then again, for stability linux may be "the cure" you're looking for ;)

Re: [mythtv-users] directv d10-300 ... impossible?

2005-09-21 Thread Erik Pettersen
There's been some discussion about the D10-300 on byopvr, and the
DTVcontrol site (previously linked to re: home media cables) lists the
D10-300 as NOT compatible

http://www.dtvcontrol.com/index.aspx?content=compat

Now is that because the serial port is hidden and the DTVcontrol
maintainer hasn't noted the "behind the sticker" issue? Or is it
further disabled than that?

Furthermore, has the whole D10 (regardless of 100/200/300) fixed the
"unable to use serial cable for channels under 100" issue brought upon
by a recent DirecTV firmware update still an issue? (it even snared
the series 2 TiVo STB owners with that snafu/issue)

I too suggest getting a used known good serial controllable DirecTV
receiver off ebay or the like... BUT am intersted in peoples
experiences with the D10-300 and serial control and/or if they found a
code/setting for IR blasting... as the question keeps resurfacing in
general.

Thanks! (hope I didn't confuse the issue or aren't too OT)

BTW, re: the USBUIRT, I don't think you "train" the usb-uirt in the
manner you're thinking -- I don't know how it works as I don't own
one... Also, if you didn't get the 56khz receiving version of the
usbuirt, that could also be why it's not "seeing" your direcTV remote,
but that's just a not-so-educated guess on my part!

It's no joke. For me, I had one 250g disk fail w/out raid and it was a
complete hassle. I wasted tons of time worrying about how to save my
data, research, etc. I now know a bit about LVM2 and RAID, but I still
lost 60% of my recorded programs.

I decided at that point that my time is worth more than anything. I run
a raid10 system currently with 6 250g disks. They are raid1 (mirrored)
pairs of disks, and then the three raid1 mirrors are stuck together with
raid0 to form a PV for LVM. After taking out space for root/swap, I've
got a 693g PV.

For a while I ran two of the raid1 devices degraded until the drives
went on sale. At $99/drive it's far cheaper than wasting days/weeks
trying to salvage and restore and reshuffle.

I chose LVM on top of the raid10 device so I can add another pair of
disks and create another PV. Not quite the performance boost of raid0,
but I'll worry about that when I get there. As it is now, I've still got
285g free in the PV.

BTW - heat and space are an issue. I've only got room for two more
drives and I've got fans blowing over each pair. My temps are:

# hddtemp /dev/hda /dev/hdc /dev/hdi /dev/hdk /dev/hdm /dev/hdo
/dev/hda: Maxtor 6Y250P0: 28 C
/dev/hdc: Maxtor 6Y250P0: 24 C
/dev/hdi: Maxtor 6B250R0: 38 C
/dev/hdk: Maxtor 6B250R0: 37 C
/dev/hdm: Maxtor 6B250R0: 28 C
/dev/hdo: Maxtor 6B250R0: 28 C

The two in the 30's are in my 4-in-3 kit. I'll have to work out why it's
so hot on the top of my case.

Well, I already have an IR receiver and an IR blaster and an IR
keyboard. I'm trying to cut out the IR altogether.

I've kept this thread in my "inbox" for a while, which originally
started my investigation, unfortunately it seemed to just die out.

Along these lines, does anyone know how to control a cable box via
direct USB connections? I know my cable box has a USB port, and if I
hook up a USB keyboard to it, I can change the channels by hitting the
number keys.

I dug a little into it, and it would seem that I'd need a USB
host-to-host cable, but researching linux that for linux, I really only
came up with drivers that I use for my linux ipaq.

Does anyone have any other pointers? It would hugely cut down on my
channel changing time.

This'll probably garner boos and hisses but... I use

with MythTV generated files but I don't see how it would be any
different.

I also hear good things about womble's MPEG2VCR

I believe both have trial periods.

Re: [mythtv-users] Opinion on philips 32" hdtv..

2005-09-12 Thread Erik Pettersen
It's really a personal preference and viewing habit decision (4:3 vs 16:9)

Of course if you have a large enough of 4:3 the effective screen size
letterboxed can be comprable to a smaller widescreen TV... I think
my wife would have been happier if I got a 4:3 as most of the content
is still SDTV... and the stretch modes either give people mishapen
heads or highlight the flaws in my analog cable signal or mpeg2
compression from PVR (but it still beats the pants off watching on the
old SDTV set! It's still the same flaws just more noticeable on a
clearer/non-interlaced set)

Although all the conflicting opinions and impressions of picture
quality drove me slowly insane, I researched my CRT direct view
"budget" HDTV in the AVS forum

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=64

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=564537

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=533115

Re: the phillips: regular walmart has the black widescreen version of
this, best buy the silver widescreen version. I realize you aren't
supposed to go by how the sets look in the store (although I have no
idea how you're supposed to shop for an HDTV then...), but the
phillips just looked awful to me and I *really* wanted to like it as
it's priced right and has a QAM/ATSC tuner! YMMV.

I ended up spending almost twice as much on an 30" LG widescreen CRT
(which has a bit of a dubious reputation in same forum).

2005-09-12 Thread Erik Pettersen
While I'm sure there are some die hard folks out there who prefer all
things analog, a DVI ->HDMI cable is probably "best" IMHO. Assuming
that connection on your TV isn't already taken up by somethign else,
of course. Of course the VGA input is probably the "easiest". I'm a
little confused though, is your TV not widescreen or is it just that
the VGA input on the TV doesn't accept anything higher than 1024x768?

There's no such thing as a native PC video card with HDMI output
(yet?). There'd need to be some sort of marriage between the video
card and audio folks / Specs to make this happen if I understand
correctly. DVI just carries video, HDMI carries both audio and video.

*shrug* At least I'm pretty sure the above is correct ;) YMMV

I hate to point out the obvious (ok, but i secretly love to)... but
isn't that more of a personal decision? What's more important to
YOU?!

Is it the capability to record two concurrent programs or to have
"better" TV out quality but have this alleged spectre of heat issues?
It's really an apples and clementines thing.

The previous model epia mini-itx boards (the M-series) had very
mediocre, I'm personally interested in knowing if it's better/improved
in the SP series.

*shrug* I dunno maybe someone will reply and say they have the pvr350
and an SP board and love it. Then someone else will say the same
about the 500 (speaking of which: another wrinkle: haven't the
pvr500's been a little cranky in general with some VIA chipsets?)

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: HD-3000 QAM working for anyone?

2005-08-30 Thread Erik Pettersen
Well, It was kind of a dry run with spare hardware not totally
suitable to the task. Plus my interest diminished in pursuing QAM
when it only netted me 1 or 2 channels in the clear that I couldn't
get OTA ... (stupid adelphia *shakes fist* no LOST no MNF in HD for me
via cable!)

I'm no expert but the fact that you don't have a consistent FE lock is
most definitely an important part of the symptom/issue. It is
possible that the HD-3000 is more sensitive to noise/lower strength
signal than the QAM/ATSC tuner in your TV. In general with
analog/NTSC cards I've found that to be true *shrug*.

You could try running the cable directly from the wall to your HD-3000
(i.e. no splits/etc) temporarily as a test. If that improves your
situation you may be a candidate for some sort of high quality RF
amplifier or better grade coax or something... Although it sounds like
you've sorta tried this. I have no idea if Dvico or other cards are
more or less "sensitive" re: QAM/etc...

My QAM tuner on my LG 30" widescreent CRT pulled in the exact same
channels as the HD-3000.

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: HD-3000 QAM working for anyone?

2005-08-30 Thread Erik Pettersen
I had QAM working with my HD-3000 for unencrypted local HD cable channels.

I assume you're using the dvb drivers? Do you have a way to determine
if the drops are in the recording, and not just symptoms of a
system/configuration struggling to playback these large/intense HD
files?

I suggest (for the sake of troubleshooting) recording something
without watching it preferrably outside of myth via command line, and
playing it back later outside of myth.

FWIW I used dvb-apps from http://www.linuxtv.org/cvs.php on a
knoppmyth install and found the following links/posts helpful for
testing:

IIRC there is a Male/Male 1/8" stereo minijack (walkman headphone
style plug) that will take the sound cards line out and run it to the
PVR350's line-in as a passthrough. In that you'll be able to hear
"system" sounds via the PVR350's RCA plugs audio out on the dongle
thingie.

It's possible I've got that completely backwards =)

Re: [mythtv-users] Methods for perfecting NVidia TV Output (was 350 Tv Out vs. Nvidia 5200)

2005-08-26 Thread Erik Pettersen
You lucky folks in the UK with your SCART connectors and tons of
freeview digital channels!

Is there any tips (besides using a better connection method) for
tweaking svideo output?

Forgive my constant apples and oranges comparison here... but in the
windows world, you can do a lot to improve picture quality by using a
better MPEG2 software decoder, like the nvidia pure video one. Is
there something analogous to "installing a better mpeg2 decoder" for
linux playback?

I mean, if someone has an Nvidia FX5200 with noisey substandard tv out
components/cables nothing is going to help short of replacment. But
if the problem is more of the GIGO variety, it think there's room for
some tips/tricks/configuration help.

Is you're point that most of the tuner card drivers are reverse
engineered and come from community/OSS development?

There is the plextor convertX *shrug* that has manufacturer supplied
linux drivers IIRC

ATI already has his money and telling him to not buy ATI (after the

Re: [mythtv-users] what cpu is required for hdtv playback

2005-08-25 Thread Erik Pettersen
I've got a slightly dumb question:

Is the performance gain from using AMD64 on a 64bit OS more
signifigant than if you ran it on a regular 32 bit flavor of linux but
used more stable nvidia drivers to take advantage of XvMC (at least
till the 64bit driver situation is ironed out)?

Re: [mythtv-users] 350 Tv Out vs. Nvidia 5200

2005-08-24 Thread Erik Pettersen
I don't have any concrete facts to dispute it, but i'm not sure if
that assumption is an absolute.

What I "know" annecdotally is that budget and cheaper manufacturer
cards tend to "cheat" or skimp on the TV out section/components as a
way to cut corners/costs.

Example: back in the day... it seemed that "built by ATI" cards had
superior TV out than "powered by ATI" cards... even if they were both
radeon 7000s or what have you.

I believe that reputable "brand" name manufacturers of nvidia or ati
reference cards do a better job with the TV out, especially the ones
that have models or market towards media/cinema applications (I'm
thinking EVGA for example).

I was under the impression that newer nvidia cards with more media
functions (including tv out/processing) built into the GPU were
actually better than the older "external encoder" scan converter
types. *shrug*

I'd be interested in seeing if the people unhappy with their cards
have budget brand or name brand implementations of their "5200s" or
"mx420's" or the like... I'm sure there's a big component of the PQ
to the settings/decoder/input quality (GIGO)... but I bet there's a
correlation there.

Quality is "good"... not sure what your expectations are, but I
presume for analog cable as a source you'll be content with the
capture/encoding quality.

It does NOT come with a remote, so factor that in =)

Re: [mythtv-users] 350 Tv Out vs. Nvidia 5200

2005-08-23 Thread Erik Pettersen
Well, that might be so... and that's not promising to me considering I
wanted to keep the pvr350 in the via epia m10k mini-itx box.

Again on the windows side of things (forgive me, I have sinned), the
community tried to isolate the issue. At first it was intel chipsets
that it didn't work on, then it was via... then it was a heat issue,
then some claimed it was the ui, other says it would crash without the
ui, If you stood on one leg and faced NW and patted your head it would
stay rock solid, but if you moved it would crash. Ironically one
thing that made it more stable, was to concurrently have "local"
playback via software decoding (which defeats the advantage of using a
pvr350 on a slower system like a m10k) while using the hardware
decoder... for some reason the "touch" of the concurrent software
decoding helped in some instances with EOF lock up and overall
stability. *shrug*

I guess my point, besides dragging the o.p. thread further out to
drift (sorry!) is that I doubt it's any one thing... more that it's a
combination of the driver itself and the way one forces a ui
over/through the mpeg decoder... at least that's my feeling.

And again, maybe everything is roses using IVTV and linux and I should
shut my pie hole and setup a test box and find out first hand =P

Re: [mythtv-users] 350 Tv Out vs. Nvidia 5200

2005-08-23 Thread Erik Pettersen
Forgive the slight threadjack, but...

Does the PVR350 suffer the same EOF lockups in mythtv/linux that
happen in the windows world?

To the original poster:
In my opinion; the pvr350 and it's hardware decoder/svideo output
looks better than most software decoding / video card's svideo out (
out of the box/stock )

That's not to say a name brand fx5200 or higher will look bad, just
that you have to give the nod to pvr350. I believe with tweaking,
proper settings, and a good software decoder you can get very
close/equal to PVR350's output.

>From the windows side of things, instability when using the PVR350
while forcing a gui "overlay" through the mpeg decoder/tv out drove me
to madness after some initial success/happiness.

I'm of the opinion (unless ivtv and this xv patch mentioned
previously, which has piqued my interest) that what little the FX5200
or the like lacks in PQ via svideo out makes up for in flexibility and
stability. Anything you can see on your monitor you can see on your
TV (mame, other applications, etc) with a regular video card, without
question. Plus you've got the option of DVI/HDTV.

Of course, if you already have a pvr350 I'd consider trying to get it
to work, but if you were considering buying one or the other at the
start of a project IMHO video card + hw encoding tuner card is the
safer/easier route.

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-150 purchasing questions.

2005-08-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
The MCE version of the pvr150 is pretty much driver compatible with
the "retail" flavor.

Obviously you won't get a remote or IR blaster that comes with the
retail package, but you'll get RCA audio inputs as opposed to 1/8th
inch stereo mini jack and the inclusion of an FM tuner (mythtv guru's
is the pvr150MCE's FM tuner supported in linux/myth?) with the MCE
flavor (as well as the cheaper price.

Re: [mythtv-users] HOW CAN THIS BE THIS HARD!?!?!?! (adding 2 files to a bootable iso)

2005-08-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
There was a great discussion with a billion different ways ( which
doesn't always help, but hey) on slashdot a few months ago

"Why Do We Have to Use a Floppy to Flash BIOS?"
http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/06/29/2135208

I found a lot of neat howto/ideas command line nuggets in the comments
(in between the troll posts, and hot grits of course!)

Re: [mythtv-users] How do I get decent quality SVideo output? (Using PVR-150 and Geforce4 MX)

2005-08-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
well granted it would be different, but you complained about what I
presume to be pixelation/blockiness type artifacts, which *could* be
your processor struggling to keep up with decoding or there could be
some horrible recording artifact from snowy analog cable.

I'm trying to eliminate possibilities to narrow down the issue. Even
if you drag the file over to another more robust machine on your
network, and play it back on a PC monitor hopefully you can
tell/verify (less the interlacing) if it exhibits the same undesirable
features you're seeing on your TV via myth.

If you do that you'll know it's not the encoding/recording.

Next, (and here you'll have to forgive me lords of the myth as I know
precious little about how mythtv handles playback or how to tweak it)
I'd close down myth front end and fire up mplayer or xine or vlc on
the 1ghz box and try the different playback options to see if it
helps.

I'm not sure what to do after you've found a combination that works for you...

I have a geforce4mx 420 in my test knoppmyth box (XP 1700) and was
playing around with playing back HD streams from the HD-3000 card
outside of mythtv. Unfortunately I'm not sure what settings worked
best for me (although increasing buffers helped alot)... because it
was like -vo xv worked in one (mplayer?) and -vo xvmc worked in the
other (xine?) but not vice versa... I picked up a geforce fx5200 to
play with as it has more robust media accelleration than the geforce4,
and want to see how that goes =) One OT question: with the 7174
nvidia drivers if you close out from X to terminal single user mode do
you get all black with green random ANSI looking blocks, or is that
just me?

Sorry for the slightly half baked advice, I think the basic approach
is right to narrow things down, but I start to lose it when you'd need
to be specific about how to adjust playback settings in mythtv/linux.
In windows world, I'd just say "install the nvidia pure video decoder
trial" and see how that goes =P

Re: [mythtv-users] How do I get decent quality SVideo output? (Using PVR-150 and Geforce4 MX)

2005-08-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
What speed machine? Usually I suggest trying to play back a recorded
file in another player (or on another system) to verify that it's a
playback/decoding only issue.

I'm not sure of the linux or mythtv terminology for this, but what's
your video renderer?

i.e. overlay, vs xv/Xvmc ?

*shrug* maybe that's a start?

Yes, but we're talking about svideo input (2 qty) which would be
preferred video input for capturing digital cable STB video output.

Re: [mythtv-users] Happauge PVR-500 Linux Support Feedback

2005-08-19 Thread Erik Pettersen
I may have misread the original poster, but... The PVR500 MCE doesn't
have any IR blasting action built in. So, you'd be using a 3rd party
IR blaster regardless in that scenario. But what I don't understand
is why you think you couldn't control two cable boxes with a PVR 500
(especially since the 500 has little to say in that regard/department
it's more LIRC/mythtv config than anything). You'd probably want the
additional svideo/audio header for the 500 if you went that route
though I imagine.

Someone correct me if i'm off base on my assumptions here =)

Re: [mythtv-users] Multiple Video Streams Out

2005-08-19 Thread Erik Pettersen
Would it be rude of me to ask why, or more to the point, what's your
end goal/setup here?

What are the destinations of the 3 streams for? Are they different
programs/content on these streams (and their not really streams in the
way you're describing them, i don't think)

Maybe someone else has a definitive answer but I think if I had more
information I could give a more informed and holistic answer... off
hand I see nothing wrong with the specs of that machine *shrug*

2005-08-19 Thread Erik Pettersen
I 2nd the use svideo/composite over coax line of thinking (even if it
means swapping back and forth with your DTV STB cables each time)

I've got think you'll have an easier time doing this with some sort of
simple command line capture tool to the desired directory than trying
to do it within MythTV (as a manual recording), but i'm not trying to
promote hereasy =P It's probably 6 to one 1/2 dozen to the other

Well, in general I think you *normally* just grab one stream to cat
to disk at a time, but http://www.promise.tv/ has kinda put that
thinking on it's ear a little bit, but that's a bit of a digression me
thinks.

Anyways for the o.p. it sounds like it's immently doable.

So what's a 'reasonable' number, can I get away with 3xDVB-T + 1xPVR-250 ?

[mythtv-users] remote wonder 2 II

Hi-
After my smooth experience with the remote wonder 1, I bought a
rw2 over e-bay. I am unable to get the ati_remote kernel module to
work with it. I have seen the pages about making it work through LIRC
, but that seems a lot more complicated than the regular kernel module.
Has anyone gotten the ati_remote kernel module to work with the
rw2 ? Or is this a lost cause?

thanks,
Erik

No, never tried the proprietary driver. Didn't seem worth it, this box

[mythtv-users] Radeon 9000 TV Out S-Video Fedora Core 4

2005-07-29 Thread Erik Dykema
Hi All-
Have been having lots of troubles trying to get TV-out working on
a radeon 9000 card, through the s-video connector. I tried all sorts
of tricks with the xorg.conf file (using FC4). Ultimately, I got it
working.
The fix was, changing the driver line in xorg.conf from radeon
to
vesa, ala:
  Driver "vesa"

Now tv-out works fine. Hope this might help someone else.

good luck,
Erik

[mythtv-users] Front-end, back-end, how about IR control?

2005-05-24 Thread Erik Terpstra
Hi,

I don't have a MythBox yet, but I am planning to build one.

One thing I don't understand. If I want MythTV divided over a front-end
and a back-end.
I would expect the back-end to have the TV card(s), because that machine
has to do the recording.
But the TV card has a IR remote control, and the remote control is what
you would like to use in the living room where the front-end is.

How does this work, or am I missing something?

TIA,

Erik.

[mythtv-users] Re: PVR-350 tuning problems

2005-02-23 Thread Erik Barton
This is occuring because your ivtv and lirc modules are not being loaded at
the appropriate time during boot, due to missing udev entries. Jared has
posted a patch for this on his How-To (just two days ago). See the first
paragraph of the How-To and also the section below "Get and Install
Lirc". Apply the patch he has posted, remove any other modprobe.conf or
rc.local or init.d entries you've implemented to try to fix this, and
reboot. The modules will load correctly and all of your problems will go
away (or at least the ones you describe).

At 08:04 PM 2/23/2005, you wrote:
Hi everyone. I decided to upgrade to .17 using Jarod's guide last week.
After sorting out some little problems here and there, the biggest
problem I still have left to resolve is related to tuning.
I'm not sure what started the problem, but I started getting this
message in the mythbackendlog:
ChannelBase: Could not find input: Tuner 0 on card when setting channel
Once this starts happening, things record, but it won't change off of
the default channel.
I've seen a couple of messages bouncing back and forth on the list where
there was a second entry in the db for tuners, but there is only the one
entry in mine. I can resolve the problem by shutting down the backend,
running mythtvsetup and then restarting the backend. Right now this
solves the problem, until I restart the box.
Now of course that's easy enough to do when I'm sitting here in front of
my box, but a bit of a pain if I need to restart the box and I'm not around.
I've checked out the db before and after a reboot, and the data doesn't
seem to change. Anyone have any thoughts on how to resolve this?
Here's what I'm running:

Hi,
I believe you are using an old version of mythtvsetup. Remove the old
one in /usr/bin (or /usr/local/bin), and copy the new compiled one
called "setup" from ~/mythtv-0.16/setup/ (or wherever you compiled
it).

ie:
cp ~/mythtv-0.16/setup/setup /usr/local/bin/mythtvsetup
chown root.root /usr/local/bin/mythtvsetup

Hope this helps

Hello!
My mythweb version is "0.16-63-at", so I don't think this will be a
problem..

Allso I couldn't find file includes/translate.php, so I just drop
Slovenian.php to languages directory and now I can choose Slovenian language
in "Settings/MythWeb/Language".

But when I click any other link on page Language goes back to English and so
on... So only page that I can read in SLovenian language is this
"Settings/Mythweb"..

Any Ideea???

Does anybody know where/what to change in x.php files to make
Slovenian.php running???
You should just be able to drop it into the languages directory, and add
it to $Languages in includes/translate.php (guess I need to add that to
the translations howto).
Make sure that your translation is against cvs -- it's totally different
from .16 mythweb.

I have patched my local nuvexport that fills in the date of the
recording as a subtitle if the subtitle isn't there, instead of
'Untitled'. I needed this so I could export more than one [EMAIL PROTECTED]
episodes at a time. From your example above, it looks like you are
putting the channel, startime and endtime into the filename too. I
haven't seen a need for that myself, but I guess that could be done too.
I record lots of shows that don't have subtitles, so this is quite necessary.

I also have two more modifications...one restores the space after the
minus sign between title and subtitle as it's supposed to be, and the
other adds a cmd arg to save the description of the show into a .txt
file so when I finally get mythburn going, I'll be all set. I used to
export the show to vcd, then export the nuv/sql, and delete the nuv
file, but all I was interested in was the description.

Dunno if anyone is interested in patches.

Re: [mythtv-users] lircd troubles

2004-12-18 Thread eRik
Try to reload lircd
/sbin/service lircd restart
'Couse I have to reload this service twice to work for me, so I add upper
line to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local twice. I have FlyView tuner.

I hope this will work

Subject: [mythtv-users] lircd troubles

Sorry, forgot to include the kernel versions in the last post!
I am having some major issues with getting lircd to work. I know this
is not an lirc list, but maybe some guru can help me. I have a Lola
X-10 remote, and have had it working in the past using a different
kernel (2.4.22-1.2179.nptl_47.rhfc1.at) but upgraded to
(2.4.22-1.2199.nptl_52.rhfc1.at) from axel's repository. Now when I
start
up lircd and do irw to try and get test keystokes, irw will close
after one keystroke and say connection refused when I attempt irw
again. I see this in my /var/log/messages:

Does anybody know where/what to change in x.php files to make
Slovenian.php running???
You should just be able to drop it into the languages directory, and add
it to $Languages in includes/translate.php (guess I need to add that to
the translations howto).
Make sure that your translation is against cvs -- it's totally different
from .16 mythweb.

Re: [mythtv-users] Remote is a no go.

2004-12-11 Thread Erik
Hi,

Please check which device the lirc kernel modules create. On my Gentoo box
(Kernel 2.6.9) this is /dev/lirc/0 and thus the lircd should be started with
-d /dev/lirc/0 and not /dev/lirc.

Regards,

Erik
