For me at least, it's when it fails to generate a thumbnail. It seems to try for about 10-20 seconds, then I just don't get a thumbnail for that show. It also seems to cause problems for the backend. Are you getting log messages for mythbackend? Sorry that's not much help, but I guess it's not just you. It takes bloody forever to get to recorded programs, though CPU usage is negligible, there's plenty of RAM, and everything else accesses just fine. You sure it's not just mythweb regenerating preview thumbnails?
