Re: [mythtv-users] Shuttle SB75S, SB65G2, or SB61G2V3
The soundcard listed on many Shuttles is the RealTek 650. Is this also known as the Intel 845 (uses the i8x0 kernel module)? --Brandon On Thu, Feb 03, 2005 at 03:33:33PM -0800, John Hannan wrote: > think i need to put a quieter fan in the box. i haven't spent too > much time trying to solve the noise problem. thanks for the tips. > > On the spdif question. i'm able to use the spdif output to connect > the box to my audio receiver. think i need to put a quieter fan in the box. i haven't spent too much time trying to solve the noise problem. thanks for the tips. On the spdif question. i'm able to use the spdif output to connect the box to my audio receiver. I've only tested stereo output though. i haven't used mythdvd to test the dd/dts capabilities but don't think there would be any problems. Re: [mythtv-users] Shuttle SB75S, SB65G2, or SB61G2V3
I have a shuttle but don't use it for myth. I need a system that has room for 2 tv tuners so I can record one thing and watch another. As far as the sound issue goeshow hot is the system running and what setting is the fan on in the bios. My system is near quiet except for when things start to get too hot and then the fan ramps up. Sudhian.com has a really good forum about shuttles and has a lot of good information about mods to reduce noise. Re: [mythtv-users] Shuttle SB75S, SB65G2, or SB61G2V3
The main fan connected to the heat pipe is a standard size. You might consider replacing it with one from http://www.directron.com/quietfans.html Take a look at the sound level ratings provided there. Also note if the CFM is way less than your original fan then you may have heat issues. I haven't bought a replacement for mine, but thats more a matter of not wanting to spend the money on it. One thing you can do that I won't go so far to recommend but that does work somewhat with the shuttle cubes is to cut out the aluminum back plate fan cover. I believe it has hex shaped holes in it. The reason this helps somewhat is that covering acts to disturb the normal flow of air and in so doing creates some noise. The again I didn't do any elaborate tests before and after so your mileage may vary. At the very least it does improve the air flow somewhat. Of course doing so will void your cases warranty and the procedure is not without some risk. It would probably be best to remove the motherboard and all the internal components before doing this, although I left the motherboard in when I did it and just very carefully cut out the outline with a dremel cut off wheel being sure to use a little compressed air to blow out any dust. I cleaned and reapplied heat sink compound to the cpu when done since I had the heat pipe out. I can email someone a picture if they want. Again its not a huge thing, but I think its quieter that way and maybe a little cooler. I have a shuttle (IC-VL67) p4 2.6 that I use as frontend/backend. only regrets i have are the noise level, (I can hear the box in the next room) and there's only 1 pci slot (i'd like to have a couple pvr cards in there). the noise level for me is really annoying.
