Is there any way for one complete Myth system to talk to another and transfer the requested movies or music in the background fr later viewing..? Does someone have a good way to set this up..? First, I would probably suggest a VPN between your locations. This would allow you to have both networks connected and even sharing an IP subnet so pointing the boxes at each other is very simple. Your best option might be creating a post-processing job for your recordings that launches a DB query and insert from one site to the other (depending on which site the file was recorded at) and then either run or schedule via cron an rsync of the file. This way, each Myth system would have the DB entries for the recordings and once the rsync was finished, each would have a copy of the file. You could also "re-execute" mythcommflag on the recording at the receiving site once received using ssh to build the markup table and flag commercials. I would think your music might be small enough to handle being shared from one site to the other on demand. As for movies, a scheduled rsync of the video folder and export/import of the video database tables should be enough to keep those in sysnc. The same would apply for music if you found the on demand sharing to be unworkable. Kevin ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] Two Different Backend systems talking together
I like the Rsync idea or some such solution, but duplicating the database is overkill and will do exactly what you are saying here. I'd suggest creating a custom SQL script that only duplicates the needed tables or one that runs and deletes the scheduled recordings information from the scheduled recordings table (I don't know the real name for that table). This would allow you to have the same data and access to the data on both systems without having to have the schedule and even the hardware config the same (if you didn't copy the hardware data). The first questionthat comes to mind (it is a small concern) though is what happens when you delete a viewed file form the second house (slave system). It will reappear the next time things are sync'd because it was not deleted on the master. It would take a pretty significant change to make that sort of thing go away, and probably not worth it. Other than that you could duplicate the whole database and then run a "delete from ScheduledPrograms" script to clear that table. All would be well with the scheduled progs on the slave then. I was thinking the same thing yesterday when I finished setting up MythTV at my office. I really only wanted one way communication so I don't think it would be too difficult. I am only interested in recordings, although I don't think music, video, or pictures would pose too much of a problem. Anybody see something I am missing in copying the files overnight then dumping the 'recorded' & 'recorded markup' table to the other box? ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Yep, and then you'd be sliding down the slippery slope on your way to implementing a media replication scheme between the backends with priorities and scheduling changes until they become aware and create Skynet. :-) Don't get me wrong, I'd see this functionality (well, not the Skynet part) as a Godsend, but I'm not really sure anyone of us has the time nor the resources to pull it off in a reasonable amount of time. Re: [mythtv-users] Two Different Backend systems talking together
Hi Richard, I would assume since Myth can rip dvd's and place them on the system for viewing at anytime that I could build one of the myth systems with no cable or channel access and have it simply see all of the rsync'd content as recorded content..? I would think that the ability to send files from one unit to another (much like I do with my replay TV units) or to 'buffer' a certain amount of the program for playing back on another unit would be very helpful thing to have, at least in my case :-) On Fri, 25 Mar 2005 15:28:07 +0100 Rickard Olsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Richard J. AFAIK there's no mechanism in place for 'requesting' movies and music like that and the DSL is too slow for on-demand viewing over the network, especially if you're doing HDTV... I've been thinking about something similar between home (10mbps fiber) and work (3mbps fiber) where I have DVB-T access at home but no TV reception at all at work, 500GB storage in the home server and 1.2TB at work. I'm leaning towards just having a frontend at work and the backend at home and replicating some of the smaller media files like music between the sites with rsync or unison.
