Last weekend I tried an FX5700 and was hoping for better quality video than my
Matrox G550. I've been trying mythtv and xine (all possible output modes) and
was amazed that my old G550 has better image quality than this rather new
FX5700. I switched back to the G550 and take for granted that the maximum
resolution I can get is not as large as the FX5700 can do. Quality means more
to me than resolution and the Matrox card clearly won that in my case (CRT
projection with 2m*1.5m screen so you'll see all artefacts easily :-) ).
xvmc using the FX5700 seems to have best quality but I need gamma correction
(which I found was not possible so this option wasn't suitable for my setup).

I was actually surpriced by these results as I thought that the FX5700 would
win in quality over the G550. Unfortunately it didn't unless it needs some
serious tweaking. Both cards where compared with same resolutions and refresh
rates.

regards,
Marcel

OK, I can understand this. However, whenever I research information on
XVMC (which I assume you suggest when you mention the nVidia cards), I
see that it's current support sucks, that it crashes when doing ff or
rew and that no one is working on fixing it.

So, is is true that there's no way to make a MythTV front end machine
for HD that has low-end processor requirements along with hardware decode?

Thanks,

Yes, many of us have. A pvr-x50 will Not decode HD.

The PVR is very picky what format it decodes. Transcoding arbitrary
video sources to the PVR acceptable format is still somewhat of a holy
grail.Everybody knows it should be possible, but nobody has found it
yet.Boy, I wish I knew more about video formats...

Yes, many of us have. A pvr-x50 will Not decode HD. You'll have to get
an nvidia geforce FX series card, the most popular is the 5200

[mythtv-users] Will a PVR-[23]50 help HD playback?

2005-01-17 Thread Comments
In order to keep my hardware costs down as much as possible, I was
looking at a variety of possibilities in hardware configurations.

I was wondering if having a PVR-[23]50 along with one or more HD-3000
cards would work to decode the HD streams. A PVR-350 is a lot cheaper
than a new MB, processor and memory for a Myth box.

The goal would be to use the encoding (probably not used with an HD
stream) / decoding properties of the PVR card, and not it's tuner.

Is there a stand-alone hardware (en|de)coder card that would be better
suited for this configuration?

Anyone tried this? Is it possible?
