What I want is both screens to display the same contents... I
don't want to have one virtual area with the TV being at the right
 or bottom of the monitor.

A few possibilities:

It's possible to run the Myth frontend from the monitor and
direct the TV output to the PVR350.

It's possible to run Myth frontend on both the TV and monitor.
Just don't try to watch anything from the monitor. Using the
setup menus would be no problem.

You could try using the Relative screen positioning option in
the X config file to make the two screens overlap. I don't know
what would actually happen - I never tried it.

[mythtv-users] X output to both TV and monitor

2005-01-02 Thread Carlos Fernandez Sanz
Hi,
Is it possible to use a PVR-350 in X to output to TV and, at the same
time, use a regular video card (an Nvidia FX 5200 to be exact) to output
to monitor? I'd like to use both at the same time... would be really
useful to me. Configuring myth using the TV can't be good for the eyes...

Thanks.

Yes is the short answer. There are several ways

1) Run dual screen
Pros - relatively simple to make work
Cons - The 350's X display is tied to the desktop one so logging out
restarts the x server for the 350 as well as the desktop. The desktop mouse
can move off the side and onto the tv's display

2) Run 2 x servers
Pros - they are independent so the 350 one can run forever and
doesn't really need a window manager
Cons - You really need to disable the Virtual Terminal switching
since by default only the one connected to the active virtual terminal will
run. There are patches around for X to do this but that means that you have
to find them, apply them and then rebuild the server.

I do have the patches on my machine and I am hoping to write up how to make
the second option work since several people have asked how to do it.

John,
What I want is both screens to display the same contents... I don't want
to have one virtual area with the TV being at the right or bottom of the
monitor.

The thing is, with the nVidia card (which has TV out too, even though I
believe the PVR-350 has better quality) it works this way from the BIOS
messages until the X server is started. As soon as this happens, the TV
goes black (until I have ConnectedMonitor TV in the config file, in
this case the monitor goes black).

Surely there is a way to tell the X server that there are two devices to
use for display?

Thanks.

How about this idea:
I have a second computer running win98. Useing the X forwarding of my
myth box I can configure it on Cygwin/X (with ssh) on the windows box.

Hi,
Thought about this, but this doesn't output video, plus I'd like my
setup not to assume that there's always a network available, or a
monitor, etc... so if I could make it work with a TV or a monitor
(whatever is available), that would be ideal.

Thanks.

RE: [mythtv-users] X output to both TV and monitor

2005-01-02 Thread John Harvey
Not sure how to display the same content to 2 different cards in one
session. The nvidia driver is talking to 1 card so its easier.
However why do that. You can always just run up a new mythfrontend to do the
configuration stuff you need talking to the nvidia xserver when you need to
do something and you don't have to worry about whatever may be happening on
the tv output.
One way to achieve a similar result is to use vnc to redisplay the 350's
output onto the nvidias xserver.
