Launch Kmix and set everything up as you like. Then minimize it. Then log out of KDE, which will cause KDE to remember your settings, and log back in. Worked for me. Relative paths are not guaranteed to work from system shell scripts. Also, if your alsa layer isn't initialized yet it won't work either. Try adding a modprobe snd-card-driver before the alsactl.
