Ken Mink wrote: A slower cooler CPU would have probably been a better choice. You can still fix that. Just underclock the CPU down to, say, 1600XP, then turn the voltage down as far as you can without losing stability. Lowering the clock speed helps quite a bit with temperature, and it allows you to run at a lower voltage, which lowers the operating temperature even more. In my (limited) experience, I've found that buying a really fast but hot CPU and running it at low speed gives you a cooler CPU than buying a slower -- and usually older -- one to begin with. My MythTV box is a Sempron 2800+ running as though it were a 2000+. Even in the tight confines of a Shuttle case, shut up in an enclosed cabinet, the CPU never breaks 40C even after hours of continuous 100% CPU usage (transcoding DVDs). Of course, it would transcode faster at full speed, but saving 30 minutes on a four-hour transcoding job doesn't mean much. I tend to just pop in a half dozen DVDs at 15-minute intervals (that's how long the rip takes) and expect it to be ready for some more the next day. Re: [mythtv-users] the ultimate setup
Hey Dan, The motherboard is an Asus A7N8X-VM/400. I picked up the s-video/composite add-on for it. I'm using the on-board video and sound. The processor is an AMD 2600XP(Barton). That may be a little overkill. I'm using an Artic Cooling heatsink/fan. It's damn quiet as well. I don't remember the exact model. The tuner is a PVR-250. It's the only card in the machine. I am walking the line on heat. The powersupply fan doesn't move enough air. There is a fan that came with the case, but it's loud. If I leave it disconnected, the machine will sometimes overheat and shutdown. I'm planning on replacing it with a larger diameter, slower and quieter fan. A slower cooler CPU would have probably been a better choice. Good luck, Ken On Fri, 04 Mar 2005 23:12:03 -0500, Daniel Wellman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Ken, > > What motherboard, chip, and TV encoder did you end up using for this box? > > I'm also sitting on the line here deciding what to build -- I need to build > a front end/back end combo for space reasons, and would sure love to make > this as quiet as possible for my studio apartment. > > I can highly recommend the Zalman CPNS-7000A-Cu heatsink for 'bigger' > machines -- so quiet I didn't know it was on when I first turned on the > machine! > Thanks, > Dan > > > Date: Fri, 4 Mar 2005 11:15:08 -0500 > From: Ken Mink <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: [mythtv-users] the ultimate setup > To: Sarah Roberts <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,Discussion about mythtv > > Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII > > I went with a FE/BE combo that would sit in my entertainment center. Ken, What motherboard, chip, and TV encoder did you end up using for this box? I'm also sitting on the line here deciding what to build -- I need to build a front end/back end combo for space reasons, and would sure love to make this as quiet as possible for my studio apartment. I can highly recommend the Zalman CPNS-7000A-Cu heatsink for 'bigger' machines -- so quiet I didn't know it was on when I first turned on the machine! This is like the Ferrari Moderna of cases... Beautiful work though. I'm guessing you dropped about $1K on your case alone. Do tell :D If memory serves, I got the case, along with the VFD, Powermate, slot load DVD and IRMan to go in it, for something like $900, maybe a bit more. Then add the motherboard, RAM, CPU, Radeon 9600Pro and 250G hard drive, and I think the whole thing was under $1,800. I've since ditched the Radeon for an nVidia card (I was originally going to run a Windows based system, then I got over that!) and added a firewire card. I will also need to ditch the 2.4Ghz processor in favor of a 3.0 or 3.2Ghz model, as the 2.4 isn't quite up to decoding HD. Oh, and add a AA transcoder to that. I paid over $2,000 for my first 10Mhz XT with 15Meg of hard drive, in 1985 dollars, so I don't consider this too much to spend. The case sits in my cabinet with all my other gear, so it had to look good, plus being solid aluminum rather than sheet steel means it dampens sound wonderfully and dissipates heat very well. I still need to slow my case fans down a tad, as when I'm not watching anything I can hear them, but I tend to watch TV at insane volumes, so it isn't that much of a bother. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] the ultimate setup
Hi Sarah -- I don't if it's the "ultimate" set-up, but, FWIW, here's what I bought last week: The Cooler Master 620 case: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=11-119-024&depa=0 A Coolmax 300w power supply, which is nice and quiet: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=17-159-021&depa=0 A Samsung SP1614N HDD, 160GB is enough for me, not doing any HD stuff. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=22-152-014&depa=0 This HDD needs to be set to "quiet mode" using Samsung's "hutil" utility which you can download from Samsung: http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/utilities/hutil.htm You can also find this handily included in the Ultimate Boot CD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ I used hutil on the Ultimate Boot CD to config the HDD into "quiet mode" before installing Linux (FC3) I also purchased an Asus DVDE616P2BLACK 16X DVD-Rom (no burning for me) which is also nice and quiet. I bought this from an Amazon Merchant. Finally, I'm using an Athlon XP cpu and bought a Thermaltake Silent Boost fan for it: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-037&depa=0 I have built the unit and have just installed FC3, but have not yet had the time to configure it and install MythTV. I can say that it is certainly quiet enough for me and I'll have no problem placing it in the entertainment center when it's all done. HTH -Rei. I have an old accent case and the vfd is a hd44780 compatible. Maybe you'll find more trouble with the IR receiver. With the old one, you need to patch lirc to get it to work. Yeah, but MicroTX means less PCI slots. I have the CoolerMaster ACTS620 http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=ATC-620C-BX1&other_title=+ATC-620C-BX1+ATC-620 which is an awesome case, but its MicroATX as well and my slots are full with wireless ethernet, video, soundblaster, and pvr-250. If I had my time (and money) back, I'd go for the CoolerMaster Cavalier4 (in black): http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=CAV-T04&other_title=+CAV-T04+Cavalier%204 Full ATX board support and basically the same dimensions.
