Hi,

VLC opens the .nuv files from my PVR250 just fine. Of course you get just
the recording, no commercial skipping and other Myth goodies.

And VLC also has all codecs included :-)

 Yes, kind of.
The only part of the filters that coud be usefull to persons with mpeg2 nuv

But that part is currently not working well for mpeg2 due to some problems

Once it is done with all the work MythHelper does are you burning to

have to delete files every once in a while just to clear space for
newer recordings. Some of which I'd like to archive to DVD.

Are you burning VCDs?

OK... I'll bite. G!
You need an MPEG2 codec. Nothing more.

Then what's this? http://dsmyth.sourceforge.net/
Common misconception with Mythtv. The *original* captures were
from bttv-based cards and were compressed in a slightly modified
nupplevideo format... the .nuv. The dsmyth filters allow Winders to play
those files.
When using a PVR-350 or equivalent, the *card* does the
compression into MPEG-2 format, but MythTV still names them as .nuv.

Compared to the original, what else? Plays back fine in Mythtv as a .nuv.
Change the extension and try to play back through the mpg-2 codec and it
looks like crap. I don't know what more information I can give unless you
want to come over and look at it yourself.

Ummm... NO. Changing a filename extension does not a different
file make. If the playback quality is different while playing the same
file, then the playback decoder is the difference... not the flippin'
filename extension!

Possible explanations between different playback utilities
include, but are not limited to:
- Different MPEG2 decoding engines (ffmpeg vs. libmpeg2 vs. some
broke-dick Winders player, etc)
- Different Hue/Sat/Brightness/Gamma between players. Maybe the card has
a borked setting for the recording that you've adjusted out with MythTV.
- Realtime filtering (denoising, deinterlacing, etc)

Again, that sentence makes very little sense. Recording a PVR-350
capture onto DVD requires at most remultiplexing... not another encode.
The quality of the MPEG does not change when you rename the file. The
quality of the *playback* depends on the player and its associated codecs.
I thought Winders was so broken out of the box that it was unable to play
MPEG-2 (i.e. DVD) and had to buy some other doodad to make DVD playing
functional?... or does media player come less brain-dead now?

No, I'm saying playing a .nuv file back through the mpeg codex
results in color correction problems and pixelation.

Compared to what? You're going to need to provide more information.

Compared to the original, what else? Plays back fine in Mythtv as a
.nuv. Change the extension and try to play back through the mpg-2

codec

and it looks like crap. I don't know what more information I can give
unless you want to come over and look at it yourself.

There are different MPEG2 codecs for Windows. F.ex the one that come
with Nero Reloaded do a better job but require 3 times more CPU time
than others that I am using. So maybe you should be more explicit on
which codec you are using.

Just the stock codecs. My goal was to copy the .nuv's, rename to mpeg and
then encode into dvd format but the quality of the mpg's is terrible. Maybe
the stock codecs are what my problem is. I'll investigate that further.

I've written a little VB program that does exactly what you want to do.
It get's the shows name from the database, connects via samba. Copies
and renames the files so I can watch them on my laptop. It's a straight
copy, no fiddlin' at all. I think that you just have a second rate mpeg
2 codec. Of all the bolt on's windows comes with, you would think a
mpeg 2 codec would have come along by now...

There is no stock MPEG-2 decoder on a Windows box. It's typically provided
by DVD player software, such as PowerDVD or WinDVD. Which one you're using
could make a difference. (I usually have PowerDVD installed and haven't run
into trouble.)

There are also a couple of MPEG-2 decoders built into ffmpeg, but IME they
tend to be much more processor-hungry than PowerDVD. They're not enabled by
default.

RE: [mythtv-users] Hauppage 350 .nuv to mpeg-2

2005-02-27 Thread William
In theory the 350 records in a native mpeg-2 format. I
 should be able
to just rename the nuv to mpg and everything work. Sadly,
 this is not
the case. The video quality playing back as an mpeg is
 terrible. Yes,
it does play but very poorly. I've also tried to create a
 DVD from the
files with the same results (using Mythdvdburn). Is there a setting
 somewhere I am missing?

I am not an expert by any means. The standard dvd bitrate is 10800 at
720x480 resolution so the closer you can get to those standards the better
your picture will be. I record my material at 720x480 with a 6000/8000peak
capture setting and the results are great.

You're saying that the quality drops by changing the file extension??

The fact that you are supposed to install a special codex to play them

You need an MPEG2 codec. Nothing more.
