Recording ATSC requires no CPU to speak of it's not software encoding.

My SerialATA flawlessly with Mandrake 10.1. I haven't tried Knoppmyth,
though.

Thanks again for your help. ANOTHER QUESTION: Does MythTV support the
WinTV-HD card and with multiple tuners? Their web site isn't clear about
decoding, Hardware vs software, either

Look at the OS issue this way. Start out by trying knopixMyth and if it
doesnt play give the system config howto maintained by Jarod a try and then
back to your existing distro. You will gain a lot of good experience. In a
couple of weeks we are expecting to see a new release so you will probably
want to wait until that arrives before settling on a final solution. The new
release should support your hardware better.

actually, i take back my previous post. :)
last night looking over the 'AutoInstall Instructions' on the
KnoppMythWiki (http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/) i saw this:
"If you get the error: /usr/local/bin/KnoppMyth-auto: line 608: /
100: syntax error: operand expected (error token is "/ 1000")
this is probably due to your harddisk not supporting DMA, or you are
using a serial-ATA (SATA) drive. In the latter case, your disk is not
/dev/hda as KnoppMyth expects it to be You may need to start again and
use knoppmyth ide=nodma from the boot: menu and in the case of an SATA
drive ide=reverse. If both fails, check whether your BIOS comes up
with a SATA legacy or SATA compatibility mode or similiar to turn your
serail ATA into a PATA drive. If nothing helps, get yourself a
parallel ATA drive and connect it as master to your IDE controller 0."
so Chris cleared up my misinformation that Linux may not support SATA
drives, and hopefully this clears up any KnoppMyth SATA misinformation
(and maybe SATA will have stronger support in the next version of
KnoppMyth ;)

I've had no problems with my SATA drive under FC3. Knoppmyth,

more than enough power for NTSC. i'm sure it's enough for at least
one ATSC stream, but i don't know enough to tell you if it can handle
two simultaneous ATSC streams.

plenty'o memory :)

you may want to google to find out how well linux supports SATA at the
moment. i don't think it's completely built in yet and may not be
that reliable. please search before taking my word though.

if you're new to linux you may want to consider KnoppMyth instead of
Mandrake (assuming you're setting this box up soley for a PVR).
Mandrake is a great distro and generally easy for noobs to learn on if
you plan on using it as a desktop. if you have no interest in linux
other than using it for a PVR then KnoppMyth comes with everything you
need for Myth pre-configured. just stick in the cd, run the auto
setup and walk through the configuration.
