I found it a lot easier to burn a CD-RW that makes the xbox boot
straight into Xebian (you can get it from the xebian distro). If I
want to play games, I just take the CD out and it boots to my
dashboard.

For some reason, if I started my xbox with the above mentioned boot CD
it just booted into the evolution dashboard. I would then have to eject
and reclose the DVD drive, then evolution would recognize the DVD as a
game which allowed me to lauch it. I believed this was due to the fact
that I have an old v1.0 xbox with one of the crappy first DVD drives and
not one of the better samsung ones.

I've hacked a couple of xboxes (one 1.6 one earlier model) without
having to use any soldering.
Key to this is already having a hacked xbox, so that you can create a
correctly formatted memory card (find the savegames at xbins). Or you
could download one (I have it here somewhere...), and use 'dd', to get
it onto a USB memory stick, and use a converter cable to connect that
to the Xbox.
You can easily make those cables yourself (xbox-linux, or one of the
forums will probably have an explanation) or do as I did, and buy one
for 7.95 EUR...

You can google 'ltools xbox' to get more info.

As I posted earlier in this thread, the SW-Mod instructions on the
xbox-linux site refer to a method which does require an earlier MS
dashboard version. This was the problem that I had. After finding a
v1.0 xbox on ebay, I bought it and found out it had the latest dashboard
due to being connected to the internet (MS will auto upgrade the dashboard).

Luckily if you follow the instructions at:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/203285
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php
You will use the ltools SW-mod zip which I believe can handle all
dashboards.

I just had the same problem when upgrading to the latest Xebian.

The sound device in the X-box has no mixer, so in order to make ALSA
work you have to disable internal mixing in myth.
You also need a good .asoundrc and instead of selecting /dev/dsp in
audio you have to write ALSA:(device from asoundrc)

Good luck!

Ok, disabling the internal mixed fixed it. I swear I tried this

Anyway, I've got sound with: MixerControl=PCM (this is probably

I basically had the same issue. I installed myth 0.18.1 using install
help from http://bit.blkbk.com/ (0.4.5-beta) on a xebian 1.1.0 xbox. I
followed a previous post's instructions where the only change I had to
make was setting Audio Output Device to /dev/dsp. No volume control in
mythtv, but I have sound.

Concerning some of the posts about HW vs. SW mod. I found the info on
www.xbox-linux.org a little dated in regards to the SW mod
instructions. I actually bought a mod chip after unsuccessfully
attempting a SW mod using the www.xbox-linux.org instructions. By the
time my mod chip arrived, I found other more up to date instructions to
accomplish the SW mod on almost any xbox no matter what HW version or
Dashboard version.

I basically followed the instructions on the following links to SW-mod
the xbox:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=STf=44t=257509
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/203285
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php

I did purchase the an action replay kit from ebay for $20 and rented the
ORIGINAL MechAssault Game in order to perform the SW mod.

I then followed the http://bit.blkbk.com/ instructions.

Then I used some evolutions dashboard tutorial instructions on
xbox-scene.com on how to start the linux install w/o needing the boot CD.

Now I have a stable and cheap frontend.

Hope that helps.

I don't know if my Xebian is 1.1 or not. What I did was I installed
Xebian from an ISO that I downloaded about a month ago. Then I added
the apt sources to get MythTV .18.1 from the usual places. I had to
also add sources for the Debian/unstable collection in order to satisfy
dependencies. Rather than doing a dist-upgrade (which would have
replaced almost every package on the box) I used apt-get to manually
install Myth and the minimum number of required prerequisites. After
that, the unstable dist can be commented out of the sources file.

I didn't have to do anything to get sound working. It just did. The
volume control in Myth doesn't work, but I get sound.

I swear I tried this
yesterday after reading about the XBox not having a hardware
mixer.
Anyway, I've got sound with: MixerControl=PCM (this is probably
ignored since internal mixing is off), AudioDevice and
AudioOutputDevice=ALSA:cards.pcm.dmix

Thanks for the help suggestions!

I probably should have asked this question already, MythTV 0.18.1 is
working on the XBox right? I mean, its just the debian packages isn't
it (assuming I use Xebian). I hope so, I don't like hard work :P

Yeah, it works - I've had it working with Xebian 1.0.2/Myth 16 and and
now Xebian 1.1/ Myth 18.1
FYI, I didn't solder anything, I just used the software mod and use
Evox as my boot loader.

Have fun!

Mike,

Good information. Nice informative post.

I don't want to hijack this thread but did you get MythGame/Xmame
working on your Xbox?

AJM,
