If you would rather track stable/testing/unstable directly, you can also
use the symlinks he has put in place so that his site follows the Debian
convention. These sources go to the same place as yours but don't need
to be updated every time a new release name is assigned (assuming he
changes his symlinks).

I got my main mythtv install off debs at

deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
deb-src http://dijkstra.csh.rit.edu/~mdz/debian unstable mythtv

but apt-cache search couldn't find mythplugins there, so I just
downloaded the tarball off mythtv.org, built according to the
instructions in the FAQ, and copied the mythtv directories under
/usr/local to the corresponding locations under /usr and it worked
just fine. (Well, worked just fine until I pressed 'M' in the
mythweather setup screen, at which point it segfaulted and now
continues to segfault on startup if I have any plugins other than
mythweather in /usr/lib/mythtv/plugins/, but that seems unlikely to
be a Debian-related issue.)

How hard were you looking? :)
http://dijkstra.csh.rit.edu/~mdz/debian/dists/unstable/mythtv/source/
does contain the plugins source package which can be recompiled
without any real problems. If you're using Debian testing (possibly
unstable too), feel free not to bother and use my recompiled packages
instead. Replace your mythtv binary apt source with ...
deb http://alexfisher.me.uk/debian testing main
Then again, I've only got 256kbit upload so it might be quicker to
recompile yourself!

...it will be up to you to get the build dependencies (fairly easy). Also,

add:
deb-src ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sid main

and then ' apt-get build-dep mythtv' again.

Don't even bother, your stopping on a qt version problem, not on
anything nerim.net has.

Somebody should take the deb packages down from the mythtv
documentation. They are clearly abandoned and no longer maintained.

The last update was 5 weeks ago. I'd hardly call that abandoned.
All the binary packages except for the plugins worked for me (on sid).
I had to build my own plugins, but using the mdz sources made that
a snap.

Just around 4 months shy for a partially working repository right? Just
like you said, 'building using the mdz sources made that a snap'. I call
that 'abandoned'.

If they aren't going for inclusion into debian proper, and they can't
keep up with the nosebleed changes. The solution is simple. Don't target
sid otherwise its all in vain. But putting it into the documentation is
just going to trip everybody up. A good example is this very thread.
