RE: [mythtv-users] DirectTV external tuner help

2005-08-03 Thread Gavin Haslett
Be aware also that unless you request it from DirecTV, your serial port may not
even be enabled. I had to specify to them that I was planning to use a Tivo and
they enabled it for me over the phone.

I have a Sony Bat55 directv box. It is connected via a serial cable to
my mythbackend. The ports are enabled in bios.

I downloaded the script from tarek sony.pl. Then put it into
/usr/local/sony.pl. In mythtv-setup I set the command to reference
that location.

I tried to to have myth record and change channels but it did not work.

What does did not work mean? Did you get an error? What happens when
you try the script from the command line. Does the serial port in the
script match the one you have the receiver connected to? By default the
script uses /dev/ttyS0.

I then logged in as root su, when I did setserial dev/ttyS0 it gave me
correct information and listed irq4, dev/ttyS1 is irq3

It seems like it is a problem with the user not having access, but I
dont know how to troubleshoot.

Probably not, as you set the devices to 777. There are so many other
things it could be like: cable is wired wrong, script is not the right
one for that receiver, is the script set to the same device you have the
directv receiver plugged into. BTW, on some (most?) Linux distros the
dev entries are created dynamically and the permissions may be reset
after a reboot. So don't reboot (this isn't Winblows after all).

One note I am sharing IRQ's, I have 5 capture cards in the box, and
scsi, agp, etc..

In this case shouldn't be a problem.

I have a different receiver (RCA DRD-435) and use a different script
(rca_control.pl), but this link may help you:

Or just go to the AVS forums and search there. They know WAY to much
about HomeTheater stuff.

I use two Sat B55's Here are the scripts I use, in case yours are
different, try these out. The sony0.pl uses /dev/ttyS0, and the sony1.pl
uses /dev/ttyS1 (kinda obvious, no?).

Re: [mythtv-users] DirectTV external tuner help

2005-08-02 Thread Evil Barney
Alex,

I use the sony.pl to control my external directv box. its an older
RCA model. I had many of the same issues. of note, I'm using the
sony.pl file to control my RCA! do some reserach and make sure that
is the script for your model, or experiment with the ones you find. I
have lots if you need them, just email and I'll send them over.

David has some good points. the best way to trouble shoot is to be
root and try the script from the command line. do something like
sony.pl 200 does it change to channel 200? I had to chmod 777
/dev/ttyS0 to get it to work. also, edit (vi) the script and make
sure it calls the ttys0 port. some call other ports.

if all else fails in linux and you suspect your cable (did it ever
work?) then there is a window program that you can use to change
channels from a windows box (have to google it, forget name. ) that
works very well and can tell you if the basics are in place.
