[Nagios-users] trouble with statusmap.cgi

2006-05-22 Thread Mark Duffy
Hi people,

No doubt you have seen this many times before, for some reason statusmap.cgi
was not in the sbin folder when I first installed Nagios, I have since
installed gdlib & its pre-requisites and overlaid Nagios but I still don't
have a statusmap.cgi

The only thing that shows about Gdlibs in config.log is:
GDLIBS='-lgd -lz -lm -lpng'

And the only warnings I receive in Config.log are:
conftest.c:26: warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in
function 'exit'
conftest.c:75: warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in
function 'exit'
conftest.c:82: warning: conflicting types for built-in function 'strdup'
conftest.c:83: warning: conflicting types for built-in function 'strstr'
conftest.c:104: warning: conflicting types for built-in function 'snprintf'

Has anyone any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Mark Duffy

Re: [Nagios-users] usb gsm modems for linux

2006-05-22 Thread Az

Hi Geoff,

I used to get my serial based units from OzTrak, but they seem to have
gone belly up. I did find another place in Aus that apparently carries
these sorts of items.

http://www.esis.com.au/Modems-industrial/Modems-industrial.htm#GSM_Modems

Scroll down to the section 'Twist GSM Desktop Modem - Dual Band - RS232
or USB'.

I've never used a USB one, but if you get it working let us know. :)

Cheers.

Yes thats right.

That's not correct, host checks are performed as soon as a service check
returns some non-OK status.

True, the `max_check_attempts' and `retry_check_interval' settings for
the service won't affect your problem.

Using `check_interval' within a host definition would activate regularly
scheduled checks of the host as opposed to checking the host on-demand
only. The directive you'd want is `retry_check_interval', but such a
thing doesn't exist for host checks.

> Is this my only option or is there a better way?

With Nagios 2.x, there is no "real" solution, you can only use
workarounds such as defining host escalations in order to suppress the
first notification. AFAICS, this will be solved with Nagios 3.x.

This might be another useful workaround, haven't looked at it yet.

It depends on the task. If the request was "wouldn't it be nice if there
was a VMware-player compatible configuration such that someone could
drop this in and be able to try a very basic Nagios installation,
assuming they had basic UNIX skills" then it would be possible. If the
request is "Please give me a Nagios installation that I will never have
to think about, has space-shuttle level documentation, and is compatible
with every system and configuration I have without fail and can totally
configure itself without any human intervention" then its a totally
different deal.

Can anyone help us with installing Nagios?

At first glance it seems that there was no C compiler to
build the program install, but I double checked and the packages are there.
When running the configure script per the Installation Directions we get the

Re: [Nagios-users] check_megaraid fails in Nagios 2.0 on Debian 3.1

2006-05-22 Thread Gary Danko

I got the plugin here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/john/megaraid/

Nagios was installed via apt-get. I guess I could recompile it from
source though I'd like to not do that since I have a number of Nagios
servers in use.

I did try adding the line "$my runtimedir;" before the first use of
the variable but the error persisted. I will try some other things.
Any other suggestons are welcome. :-)

Always perform your tests as the nagios user. The nagios user won't have
the same access rights as the root user so tests that work as root may
not work for the nagios user. It wouldn't have mattered in this
particular case but it's good practice.

2.0?

I don't use it but have some suggestions. Since this is a non-standard
plugin you should provide pointers to download the specific version you
are using when asking for help. There are a couple of check_megaraid
plugins that I've found but none use the variable $runtimedir.

It would appear that this plugin is not written to be compatible with
the Nagios embedded Perl interpreter. I would hazard a guess that your
1.3 installations were compiled without the ePN but your nagios-2
installation was. This should have been a problem for 1.3 as well since
the plugin requirements are the same. You can either --

1) recompile your nagios-2 installations without the ePN.
2) modify the plugin to be compatible with the ePN
- This may be as simple as adding 'my $runtimedir;' somewhere
before the first use of that variable.
- other guidelines to make perl plugins compatible with the ePN
are available here --

So what are the requirements again? Install a stock Linux
distribution, install Nagios, install plugins, install a stock web
config gui tool, and install the client portion of the windows
agents?

Re: [Nagios-users] Host retry interval

2006-05-22 Thread Eli Stair

HOST check mode is initiated once the service reaches the HARD state, which
comes on the last allowed check as defined by max_check_attempts for that
service. Ergo, if you set your service checks max to 15, after 15 minutes
(assuming your delay is 60 seconds) your service will hit a HARD CRITICAL,
and host checks will fire.

I didn't put a ceiling on it, I just wanted to aim him at the correct
ballpark.

I figure 7 (* $10K) is a bare-minimum. *I* wouldn't take it, but
someone might.

Get up over $100K, and I would at least think about it.

2006-05-22 Thread Kyle Tucker
Thanks Eli,

According to the docs, "Nagios checks the status of a host is when a service
check results in a non-OK status.". Is that when it reaches a HARD state
after all iterations of max_check_attempts are done or as soon as it goes to
non-OK (SOFT) state? If the latter, which seems to be when it's kicking off
host checks, I don't see how increasing the service checks will help.

Wow, you running a discount week or something? That seems a tad cheap

2006-05-22 Thread Eli Stair

I'd suggest NOT taking this action at the host level; reason being that all
service checks are halted for the duration of this non-parallelized
action... You want to avoid doing a host check until absolutely necessary.
Suggest increasing the max_check_attempts on the SERVICE to a larger number,
this will avoid impacting the monitoring system as a whole.

[Nagios-users] Host retry interval

Hi,
I have many hosts that are constantly giving me DOWN/UP state as they
are unreachable for certain periods. In an attempt to give the system more
time to become available, I increased the max_check_attempts from 2 to 5. At

I'm using the version of Nagios that is in Debian/Stable (which I think is a modified 1.3).I'm trying to sort out escalations a little bit. I can see how hostgroup escalations work, if there is a host-level problem. If I've got, say, "smtp" service definitions for three hosts, do I really have to have three different serviceescalation declarations -- one for each service definition -- to escalate each one? Is there no way whatsoever to simply say anything with service_description "SMTP" and host_name of "*" or something?Seems really ... well ... sucky, that for every host/service declaration I'd have to explicitly have an independent escalation declaration as well.Cheers,D --Derek J. Always perform your tests as the nagios user. The nagios user won't have
the same access rights as the root user so tests that work as root may
not work for the nagios user. It wouldn't have mattered in this
particular case but it's good practice.

If you're using embedded Perl (and it appears you are), the requirement
for plugins in Nagios 2 are fairly stringent, and they'll fail if not
coded properly.

http://nagiosplug.sourceforge.net/developer-guidelines.html#PERLPLUGIN

This plugin probably fails requireent #4. The good news is that it's
probably an easy fix.

Negates the status of a plugin (returns OK for CRITICAL, and
vice-versa).

Usage: negate [-t timeout]
negate (-h | --help) for detailed help
negate (-V | --version) for version information

Options:
 -h, --help
Print detailed help screen
 -V, --version
Print version information
 -t, --timeout=INTEGER
Seconds before connection times out (default: 9)
[keep timeout than the plugin timeout to retain CRITICAL status]
  negate "/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ping -H host"
Run check_ping and invert result. Must use full path to plugin
  negate "/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_procs -a 'vi negate.c'"
Use single quotes if you need to retain spaces
This plugin is a wrapper to take the output of another plugin and invert
it.
If the wrapped plugin returns STATE_OK, the wrapper will return
STATE_CRITICAL.
If the wrapped plugin returns STATE_CRITICAL, the wrapper will return
STATE_OK.
Otherwise, the output state of the wrapped plugin is unchanged.

Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring Windows servers

On Mon, 22 May 2006, Oliver Marshall wrote:

I have spent the last week looking for a monitoring solution. I have
been assessing Nagios, Zabbix, and Servers Alive for Windows.

Servers Alive may seem perfect, though its clearly more expensive than
the rest. I think it may have an issue monitoring clients servers on
other domains etc as it lacks some form of remote authentication.

Zabbix I will admit is my preference as it's all web based. It's windows
agent means that I can get local info and, more importantly, run a
script on the client server and get the results. However, the
documentation is truly terrible and the Windows side is even worse. The
last thing I need is someone to cock-up a monitoring setup and then
never get informed of any issues.

Nagios is clearly the daddy when it comes to network monitoring, though
it does require a level of linux knowledge that we just don't have here
(ssh access to setup the config for starters). I know that there is a
web based tool for setting up the monitoring config (Nagat or something)
but that's now not being supported or added to, and it's policy to not
use out-of-support products. I know there is also a 3rd party Windows
Agent that can run on the servers and monitor local events, though it
doesn't have scripting support, and it's not part of the main build, and
hasn't been updated for sometime.

Does anyone have anything useful I should consider when looking at
Nagios ? Any other web based config tools that can be used? Any other
windows agents etc ? Any comments on my opinions so far ?

When looking at Nagios and specially the plugins world, there are a couple
place to look. There is the main nagios-plugins distribution which covers
a core set of functionality and there are a host of additional plugins
that have been contributed and are available via nagios-exchange.

Both have active support on the mailing lists.

For Windows - you have a couple of choices: NSClient/NSClient++/NC_Net and
NRPE_NT. NRPE_NT allows you to write Windows scripts and extend the
pluging capability. A number for wmi scripts are hosted on
nagios-exchange.

In the linux world - server reboot is a rare requirement.

Most conditions, send the Nagios daeom a HUP will cause it to re-read its
configuration file.

However if you are using features like state retention, and make changes
to those parameters, you wil want to stop and start the nagios daemon.

I will test this solution in the next 2 weeks.
In our test enviroment its still workring.

I have written an small howto in the german nagios-wiki. But still in

To me this is obviously a performance issue related to hardware.
Your machines have way too few RAM. It is totally not possible to
run 1800 checks on a 512MB machine in a timely manner.

Think about this:
Everytime Nagios starts a check, it forks a child, which forks the
check. Nagios usually uses up 26MB total memory per process, the check
another 5MB maybe. When running 1800 checks, we are speaking of spreading
out 55 GIGAbytes of needed Ram on 512 MB real Ram. Imagine how often
that works without having the machines doing a shitload of swapping and
io-wait. I really cannot imagine how such a machine can NOT swap when
running Nagios. Are you totally sure that you did not make a mistake
when checking the machine?

Here's a lineup of our dedicated Nagios server, which is a minimal install
of RHES4 with only Nagios/Apache running on it (and the HP Insightmanager
tools and TSM backup client, but that should not reall matter that much
;)) :

top - 11:48:52 up 69 days, 19:10, 1 user, load average: 0.75, 0.70, 0.67
Tasks: 53 total, 2 running, 51 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 9.3% us, 4.3% sy, 0.0% ni, 62.5% id, 23.9% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0%
si
Mem: 3116384k total, 2341696k used, 774688k free,55188k buffers
Swap: 6291448k total, 144k used, 6291304k free, 2148772k cached

This is a HP DL380, 3,6Ghz Xeon with 3GB of Ram and a Raid5. It is
currently
running "only" 120 hosts with around 500 checks, but those are in a high
frequency schedule - ~400 checks per minute - as those are the
company-critical
services. Therefor it is under real pressure as you can see from the 2.3GB
Mem usage and the 0.75 load with only 500 checks. But I think it is kinda
comparable to your triple amount of checks.

You should really, really upgrade the ram in the machines. In my opinion
that
would solve most of your problems, as I imagine you have a lot of io-wait
on
this machine (which you can check with an uptodate top by the way ;))

Sascha

This was only a quick example!
$SERVICESTATETYPE$ gets the state type ( HARD/SOFT )

So you can exit with a CRITICAL state if your service is CRITICAL/HARD.

This is not a "ready to run" solution but i think its a possible way.

This looks very clever and it would be mostly the right workaround, still...

Do you have it tested? I do not think it will work. The goal is to reflect the
field "last_hard_state", not the field "current_state". "SERVICESTATEID"
unfortunately corresponds to "current_state" while "last_hard_state" has no
corresponding macro.

If you think about the problem, its goal was to delay the host-status-change
after stabilizing the state in many attempts, this goal has no opportunity to
use the immediately changing "current_state" field. In fact my first version of
the Perl script was using "current_state" and IRL it just did not work.

It would be fine to provide macro for "last_hard_state" in the next release.

RE: Vedr.: [Nagios-users] Monitoring Windows servers

2006-05-22 Thread Oliver Marshall
Thanks Thomas,

Yep you are right about assessing the needs.

There is a careful balancing act between costs and features and
man-hours. I don't mind the people here learning more Linux skills, it's
certainly no bad thing, but my general belief is that the time spent
implementing a project shouldn't be more than the time gained by using
it ! :)

It would be good if Nagios released a pre-built virtual machine image,
or even better a pre-created nagios disti which can install in one go
and just start up, like IPCop or Smoothwall. I know there is a Nagios
"Live" cd which boots from the cd, but you can't save any changes
between reboots easily.

Vedr.:[Nagios-users] Monitoring Windows servers

Any comments on my opinions so far ?

been assessing Nagios, Zabbix, and Servers Alive for Windows.

Olly

[Nagios-users] large text in nagios.cmd

2006-05-22 Thread Stephane Le Grand

Hello,
I have a problem with nagios

I use a lot of passive services and I have some scripts that write a
process_service_check_result into the nagios.cmd file and also log
before writing into the cmd file.

The length of the written line is variable, and sometimes it can be
verry verry long.

All the passive services are volatile.

Usually after the line is written in the cmd file nagios logs an
external_command_process_service_check_result, then aservice_alert and
then a service_notification.

A few days ago something strange happened:

-For one specific passive service that has one specific script writing
Nagios stopped logging the external command, the service alert and the
service notification for one specific service only.
-The script keeps writing data into nagios.cmd and log files (as I did
a manual debug)
-All other passive services that have scripts writing lines into
nagios.cmd work fine.
-The status data is shown in the web interface but I receive no email alert.

I use Nagios 1.2

Thank you for your help

Stephane
