[Nagios-users] Theme / website

2006-10-25 Thread Kyle Vorster
Hi Guys,

Does any one know of a webend for Nagios that supports Themes, or to
customize the pages.

I am growing tired of the boring tables, and wish to spice it up a little.

If any one can help, i would be great full.

Kind Regards,

[Nagios-users] Debugging plugins

2006-10-25 Thread Tobias Klausmann
Hi!

While debugging it would sometimes be nice to be able to run a
plugin/check from the commandline in exactly the same fashion as
Nagios does.

What I'm after is a way of running (for example):

simulate -c /etc/nagios/nagios.conf -p 'check_http!80!http://somewhere.com'

The macros (like %HOSTADDRESS%) might come from the environment
or additional cmdline options to simulate. This program should
then show all the intermediate steps of unquoting, macro
expansione etc. just like it happens in Nagios and finally
showing the actual command executed (i.e. what's sent to exec()).

That way, finding out you've got a % somewhere or missed
something else would be nice. Also, you'd be able to test drive
check_commands before using them in your configuration.

Is there any such beast? If not, is anyone willing to code it?
I'm no expert at C and I hardly know Nagios' internals, so I
can't write it myself (or rather: I'd shoot off several of my
appendages while doing so).

Regards,
Tobias

Judging by what you said, you're already one :) Feel free to share
all your plugins on the Exchange, so all Nagios users can benefit
from them. That's all there is to it :)

If you want to get involved with the core plugin dev team, speak to
Ton Voon... See if he needs more hands on his team.

Cheers!

Hi,

Oreon seems to be a decent frontend (http://www.oreon.org/). I don't
know about it supporting templates, but it looks good. A colleague of

Only problem is that the project is very frech-oriented, and the english

though).
Hope this helps,

[Nagios-users] check_mailq plugin

2006-10-25 Thread Paul Houselander
Hi

Ive just started using nagios and have it set up on a Cent 0S 4.3 box.

Seems to be working ok but ive ran into a problem where I want to check the
size of the mail queue on another server. Ive installed nrpe on the remote
server and checked its working by running on the nagios server:-

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H remote_server_name -c check_load

I get back the load average from the remote machine.

If I run

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H remote_server_name -c check_mailq

I always get back

OK: mailq is empty

Ive installed the plugin on the remote server and if I run locally I get

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_mailq -w 100 -c 200
CRITICAL: mailq is 221 (threshold c = 200)|unsent=221;100;200;0

So I know the plugin is working. If I do check_mailq -h it mentions
something about the mailq command can only be accessed by root or a
TrustedUser - nrpe is running as nagios - does anyone know what I need to do
to the mailq command to allow it to work? I tried added nagios to the
/etc/mail/trusted-users file but this doesnt seem to have done the trick.

Any help appreciated.

Kind regards

Paul

[Nagios-users] Viewing a subset of systems checked by Nagios

2006-10-25 Thread Wheeler, JF (Jonathan)
I have a Nagios installation with ~700 hosts and ~11000 services. What
we would like to do is to allow some users to view (via the web
interface) only a subset of the systems being monitored; in the current
instance this is just one host, but there could be other instances
requiring a number of hosts . Is this possible ? I suspect not, but
any comments would be useful. I am aware of the possibility that most
users who have access to the web view should not have the ability to run
commands.

Re: [Nagios-users] Viewing a subset of systems checked by Nagios

2006-10-25 Thread Donnell Lewis
Yes this is possible. You would need to add the client(person) to the
contacts.cfg file and then either to an existing contact group in
contactgroups.cfg or make a new contactgroup specifically for that
client. Unless given ALL privs in cgi.cfg every each user that has been
added to the authentication mechanism will only be allowed to see
hosts/services for which they are contacts for.

So remember to add the contactgroup you create to the host the
services for that host ( in services.cfg ) and they will then be able to
see the host and associated services for it. By adding this new contact
and contactgroup you can even specifically send them alerts of their own
at intervals they want them at, and when they log in through the web
interface they will only be able to see the hosts/services you have
given them access to, and when they look at the status map they will
only see the hosts/services you have assigned them, the rest will be ?
marks on the map, everywhere else they will just see theirs.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Nagios-users] check_mailq plugin

2006-10-25 Thread Sjaak Nabuurs
Hello Paul

check_nrpe will running as nagios user.
To check the mailq you need to be root.

add this line with visudo:

nagios ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_mailq

I'm running on Fedoracore4

Good luck

Hi

Ive just started using nagios and have it set up on a Cent 0S 4.3 box.

Seems to be working ok but ive ran into a problem where I want to check the
size of the mail queue on another server. Ive installed nrpe on the remote
server and checked its working by running on the nagios server:-

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H remote_server_name -c check_load

I get back the load average from the remote machine.

If I run

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H remote_server_name -c check_mailq

I always get back

OK: mailq is empty

Ive installed the plugin on the remote server and if I run locally I get

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_mailq -w 100 -c 200
CRITICAL: mailq is 221 (threshold c = 200)|unsent=221;100;200;0

So I know the plugin is working. If I do check_mailq -h it mentions
something about the mailq command can only be accessed by root or a
TrustedUser - nrpe is running as nagios - does anyone know what I need to do
to the mailq command to allow it to work? I tried added nagios to the
/etc/mail/trusted-users file but this doesnt seem to have done the trick.

Any help appreciated.

Double check your yum.conf file is ok. Check out the FAQ's on FC3.

http://www.fedorafaq.org/fc3/#installsoftware

They have a nice sample config file to check out.

Also, you want yum install net-snmp to get the latest package, unless
you want a specific version you don't need to specify the version after
the package.

Well I suppose in that sense I am a plugin developer but I was really
considering such things as: guidelines for interfacing with the
 Nagios host
Ah! I was thinking one step too far :)

While I was writing this reply I was called away for a few hours and
in the meantime Aaron linked to the official guidelines. That's
always a good place to start reading :)

In that case:
(i.e. standard plugin syntax?) How much output text is appropriate,
We usually restrict ourselves to one line, through STDOUT. And a
plugin should indeed limit itself to a certain number of exit codes
(0=ok, 1=warn, 2=crit, 3=unknown). The exit code stuff can also be
derived from utils.sh and utils.pm in $NAGIOS_LIBEXEC. See the
guidelines.

 performance considerations,
I'm sure there are loads of'em :) Just try to keep the runtime of
your plugin as short as possible. Naturally, also try to limit the
amount of resources you claim on the client. Monitoring shouldn't be
intrusive :)

 style considerations,
When it comes to coding style, choose what feels natural to you.
When it comes to code layout, please keep things as clean as
possible. I don't believe there's one standard for the contributed
Nagios plugins though. Search the web for a few examples and try to
stick to them. This should help keep your source clean and readable.

 documentation,
In general it is well appreciated if you include a semi-lengthy
description of your plugin at the top of the source. Describe its
function, and its behaviour depending on various situation. Describe
input and output. Describe on which platforms (OS. Nagios. Versions)
your plugin has been tested and proven to work. Also include a short
comment at crucial points in the code.

Basic programming best practices, really.

 versioning, revision control,
AFAIK there is no standardised versioning scheme that was agreed upon
for contributed Nagios plugins.

 licensing,
Most of us release our plugins under GPL license, or no license at
all. Most of the stuff I write I don't deem worthy of any licensing,
since it really isn't that complicated. I just see it as helping
people out by saving them the time of writing the same script.

On the other hand, I _could_ start GPLing my plugins since it'll help
in dick-waving contest :D (Lookit me! I have my name on a copyright!)...

anything else before unleashing my plugin onto someone else's
 production systems, etc.
I've got one word for you: testing. Testing. _TESTING_.

Okay, so that's one word, repeated thrice, but that's only to imprint
on you that _testing_ is important. Try running your plugin through
all its paces and all permutations of the environment it might
encounter. This will help you to get rid of most bugs. You won't
catch all of them, but you'll come a long way.

Also, for the more complicated plugins write a test script to help
you automate the testing. That way you'll be able to reproduce the
exact same testing routine every time. It'll also save you a lot of
time :p And if people run into problems with your plugin, you could
send them the script and ask for the returned output and/or logfile.

Speaking of... Build hooks into your more complex plugins for some
sort of debugging mode. In said debugging mode the plugin will
generate loads of status information so you can check exactly where
things are going wrong.

As far as becoming a core developer, I don't think I have the C
 behind me
Me either :3

Cheers!

Thomas

The easiest way, for you and for those active on the list, is if you
publish your plugins here, in separate emails, writing a short and

[Nagios-users] Service Check Timeouts

2006-10-25 Thread Malcolm Frazier
Hi,

I've been using Nagios for a while and I love it, but recently I
switched my gateway in the office from old FreeBSD 4 machine to IPcop.
This seems to have had an effect on my Nagios monitoring, most of the
time and most of my service checks time out. The host checks are always
find and the latency is always low, but like I said my service checks
seem to time out all the time ever since I changed my Internet Gateway.
I use plugins and check_by_ssh for my service checks, if anyone has had
this problem and maybe could help me out a bit I'd really appreciate it,
thank you.

Re: [Nagios-users] Net-SNMP and SNMP4Nagios

2006-10-25 Thread frank
It seems that RedHat broke their Fedora HTTP servers with the recent
release of Fedora Core 6. My yum setup has been solid for a long time but
now I'm getting errors as well. Trying going to any URL other than / on
fedora.redhat.com (like http://fedora.redhat.com/download/) will get a 404
with a redirect to a page that says:

Fedora Core 6
We are working hard to bring fedora.redhat.com back up to its fully operational
state.

Until then, please visit our BitTorrent tracker or list of mirrors if you are
trying to download Fedora Core 6.

I hate to turn you to another mailing list, but see what you can dig up
on the Fedora forums. If you have a good yum.conf file things should be
a go, unless they are having issues with the yum mirrors for FC3.

I don't have any FC instances up at the moment or I could try to see if
I get any errors either. You don't have any proxy in the way do you? I'd
perhaps look at that, if you do. Sorry I can't help you more!

After you get that figured out, though, installing snmp is a snap. ;)

[Nagios-users] Charts and Graphs and Nagios Oh My!

2006-10-25 Thread Maxwell,Brady

Hello Nagios Users,

I have a need to setup some performance and trending graphing

question to the group is what approach have others taken to provide similar functionality
in their own environments? I have already done some research on some of these

SORRY, Hugo. Please chill. If when you click Reply it would actually
reply to only nagios-users, then this wouldn't be a problem. For
example, on most mailing lists, if I click Reply or Reply All I get the
appropriate reply to filled in correctly to only the mailing list and no
other addresses.

I don't respond much on this list, and so I'm very used to my other
lists automatically being good when it comes to the reply-tos. When you
click a reply all on this, you get the original sender, you, and the
list instead of just the list. If you only click reply, you get just the
sender.

I apologize for being to quick to click send instead of taking a peek at
the To: fields. Is this working as designed on the Nagios list? Since
other lists I'm part of seem to do it the way I mentioned so that you
never worry about sending dups.

You are using an out of support Fedora Core version. So you need to fix
your yum config file and use the Legacy support links instead.

Please note that full support of Fedora Core 3 will be gone in about half
a year as well.

The short life span of Fedora Core makes it a bad companion for Nagios

look at Centos for servers.

[Nagios-users] failover

2006-10-25 Thread Lehman, John

Question for everyone.

I have 2 nagios servers and one is active

I have read the documentation on
implementing failover but I am finding it difficult implementing.

Is there anyone that could give me sample
scripts which on the standby host would check the nagios master and if the nagios
master were down then the standby would become the active host?

I am losing my mind trying to implement
from the documentation and I would appreciate any
advice on this one.

Re: [Nagios-users] Net-SNMP and SNMP4Nagios

2006-10-25 Thread Justin Craig
Right, I only wanted SNMP4Nagios which I thought required net-snmp and possibly rdd. Forgive me oh hp sys admin GOD. I'm not a sys admin, I'm a Cisco VoIP engineer. I've successfully installed fc3 linux OS, and compiled Nagios, monitoring about 500 hosts. (kudos to me, no need to congratulate).

So I'm learning this sys admin thing and how to install these packages and dependencies and all that goes with it. Fortunately, you don't need to be a system administrator to use Nagios, or I'd be in trouble.

I conduct my own due diligence and research before I post to this forum. Sometimes topics wander, as there are a lot of different technologies touched when troubleshooting these types of things. So forgive me for exploiting my lack of basic system administration and annoying you experts with these petty questions.

As always, any help is always appreciated. Without the open source community support, we'd regress for sure.

Is there anyone that could give me sample scripts which on the standby
host would check the nagios master and if the nagios master were down
then the standby would become the active host?

I am losing my mind trying to implement from the documentation and I would
appreciate any advice on this one.

John

Subject: [Nagios-users] Configuring Nagios to Send SNMP trap to another
monitoring tool

Hi all!

I've a question for you:

I've the need to define a new command in nagios to send an SNMP trap to
another monitoring tool installed in my network.
This event must happen in the case of ALERT/WARNING or CRITICAL result of
check_ping instead of sending email.
Anybody have a solution?

Thanks all,
Raffaello

[Nagios-users] Alerts with sendxmpp in Google Talk

2006-10-25 Thread Jeronimo Zucco
Hi. Anybody use sendxmpp to do nagios alerts in Google Talk (jabber
protocol) ?

If yes, what line command was used? I try this:

# echo test | /usr/bin/sendxmpp -i -t -c -u [EMAIL PROTECTED] -p
password -j talk.google.com:5222 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But no success. Thank you for any tip.

Long ago a guy gave me the following but I
never got to try it. I would love to hear what actually works. Maybe
a howto

Configuration doc on slave server...

Failover Configuration:

Master Server (10.1.1.3):

Configure NSCA:

 Install
Libmcrypt:

 tar

tar -xzvf nsca-2.4.tar.gz

cd nsca-2.4

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/nagios

I BELIEVE it can, but I don't know that for sure. You can build a template for just about anything though...and in fact there is a nagios plugin already available though its mostly a frontend (the version I'm running anyway).
Check out cacti.org and cacti.net and cactiusers.org.On 10/25/06,

[Nagios-users] NSClient++ weirdness

2006-10-25 Thread Dan Finkle
Title: NSClient++ weirdness

Hi,

Im using NSClient++ to monitor a pair of w2k3 servers and trying to use both Nsclient and NRPE funtions I am getting funky data.

For example, when running...

monitor: sysadmin$ ./check_nt -H 172.16.232.37 -p 1248 -v UPTIME
System Uptime - 49710 day(s) 6 hour(s) 28 minute(s)

My sever has not been up for 49710 days.

Also trying to get use check_disk I get:
UNKNOWN: Drive is not a fixed drive: MinWarnUsed (it is a: 1)

I am able to run the standalone check_disk, but whenever I try to use thresholds the error is returned.

Ive checked the clock on my sever, and reinstalled several times, hoping someone else has seen this.

Thanks,

Dan

We use Cacti, on the Nagios machine, but in isolation,
though I understand this needn't be the case.
Cacti is nice, but imo, a bugger to make do what you want
unless you're prepared to invest significant time/coffee.

It's one of those products that if you spend a couple of
days on you can get the hang of it, but then you stop because it works and the
next time you look at it you're a noob again.

  Hello Nagios

I have a need to setup some
performance and trending graphing or charts for many of the service checks I
am performing with Nagios. My question to the group is what approach have
others taken to provide similar functionality in their own environments? I
have already done some research on some of these products and just want to see
if anyone has any advice, strong feelings or negative comments on which
package or add-on has worked best in your environment.

I'll chime in here with a recommendation for Ganglia,
http://ganglia.sourceforge.net/. I run both Ganglia and Cacti for similar
purposes but pointed at different devices. As a bit of a new school
guy, I don't particularly like SNMP monitoring my linux hosts. Instead,
Ganglia supplies a thin client that is multicast based along with the
ability to create a monitoring hierarchy that I really like. Nagios and
Ganglia have been installed promptly in every environment I've worked and
and the two have covered all my requirements for years.
