Compiling stuff on the Mac shouldn't be any different from other
Unices, in general.

At what point do you run into problems?

Anyone asking a question on a mailinglist should expect an answer on that
list. If they don't care to read the list then it is their loss. It is
that simple. No one should be bothered to send duplicates to possible
non-subscribers. They have deliberatly chosen not to read the
mailinglist.

Frankly everyone posting a question and telling they are not reading the
list is showing a complete disregard for everyone on that list that should
never be rewarded. (Why would anyone put in work for someone clearly
showing that they are not willing to put in some work of their own.)

And duplicate filtering always gets it wrong. It always get the non
mailinglist message first. But the mailinglist one is the one that gets
organised properly with procmail. You can not trust the subject line to
know wether or not it is a mailinglist message.

Hugo.

[Nagios-users] NRPE compile error

2006-10-26 Thread Eric Smith
I've seen this mentioned in the mailing list archive; someone mentioned
I might need the SSL development libraries (zlib and others possibly).
Installing OpenSSL alleviated the configure "config: error: could not
find ssl libraries" error but apparently it didn't install all the ones
I needed for compilation. Can someone tell me which libraries I need
and where to get them?

Any help is much appreciated.

This has been fixed in the the newer 1.4.4 release.Off the top of my head, on your server, you need to give the nagios user enough permissions to read /var/spool/mailq. You do this by adding the user into the mail group and chmod g+r /var/spool/mailq. Alternatively, you can do what Sjaak has recommended of running this plugin as root via sudo.Warning: I think some system updates may change the permission of /var/spool/mailq back to g-r, but at least the plugin will now return an error correctly :)Tonhttp://www.altinity.comT: +44 (0)870 787 9243F: +44 (0)845 280 1725Skype: tonvoon -

Then have a look at PNP and remember how long you need to get
nagiosgrapher to work ;)

PNP is realy simple to install.

1. Download
2. unpack
3. copy process-perfdata.pl
4. edit process-perfdata.pl in one line to fit for the directory where
the "gui" looks into for rrd files
5. edit the gui configfile to fit the directory mentioned above
6. edit nagios.cfg to process the perfdata with process-perfdata.pl
7. restart nagios and wait a few minutes

I guess even for beginners it is a job for 15 up to 30 minutes and after
this it just works.

Best wishes
Hendrik

[Nagios-users] Referencing hostgroups in hostgroup definitions

2006-10-26 Thread Rogers, Nick
Hi folks,

I have devices on my network that are "dumb" (unmanaged switches, DSL/cable
modems, etc.) that I have host definitions for but set to never notify.
These devices are simply entered to get displayed in the Status map diagram
to show parent device relationships. I have a hostgroup defined that
explicitly lists the dumb hosts in the members directive named DUMBHOSTS. I
want a hostgroup that includes everything except the dumb hosts so I can
have just the responsive hosts listed in the Service Status Details For All
Hosts page. I tried !DUMBHOSTS in the members directive, but Nagios
complains about

Error: Could not find any host matching 'DUMBHOSTS'
Error: Could not expand member hosts specified in hostgroup (config file
...)

Any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks in advance,

My company has this project:

http://perf2rrd.sourceforge.net/

We use perf2rrd in combination with DRRAW to chart perfdata. It requires
plugins that support the perfdata standard (I'd rather rewrite some
plugins than try to regex this data out of standard output--just my
preference). perf2rrd itself requires very little configuration.
Performs ok for our needs--one of our installs has about 3500 items of
perfdata being updated every 2 minutes.

The log file is telling exactly what the problem is..
The ssh key exchange failed..

Fix the key exchange.. There's a problem with the
private/public keys..  Maybe they don't exist on the remote server,
or aren't set up right, or don't have the right permissions.  With
the commercial SSH package I'm using, it uses keys in the ~/.ssh2 folder..
It's not the same as OpenSSH, and the keys are in a different format.

You should look up the documentation for SSH2 for
your operating system and set up keynegotiation for the user that is connecting
to host host18.  You need key exchange to work before you can use
the check_by_ssh plugin.  There is good documentation for Commercial
SSH, that's why you pay for it.

I think it'd be a great idea if you put these checks together into
one nicely polished plugin! It's not something I have a need for

have a check for this. You can post it on the Exchange when its done.

Sounds like it wants to echo a message to the tty, but can't. Have
you tried "su - nagios" (or whatever user nagios is running under)
and then ssh'ing to the machine in question? I'd imagine you'll get a

This look like a shell error, not a plugin output. Maybe a semicolon
somewhere in url_secure?

Please post the complete command line you use. There is no point in
hiding the URL - either it is public, then who cares. Or it is private,
then we won't be able to access it, so no problem again.

I agree. My filter dumps the duplicates into my mailing list folders,
and since I have an extension for Thunderbird to remove duplicates
messages, I just run that once in a blue moon to delete them all.

Hi Andreas,

After doing a bit of thinking and Googling, I did come across the
Reply-To munging debate. I found a nice link here explaining why not to
add Reply-To:

After you read this, things do make sense as to why a list wouldn't add
a Reply-To header, but this comes with some other annoyances as well.
Even the author of the above link explains at the ends, that it
generally runs smooth but you should expect to receive a few e-mails
privately when not using Reply-To headers and it's basically something
you have to learn to deal with.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but with that being said, I believe
that if you aren't going to use the Reply-To then you should be a bit
tolerant on receiving a private message for that simple reason. I
understand everyone is busy and doesn't want to receive duplicate
messages, but at the same time many people don't ever even bother to
look at e-mail headers. They just want to get a response back and not
have to worry about it.

Generally, I don't do this, but I got in a hurry doing way too many
things at the same time and didn't take the time to delete the extra
addresses on one or two e-mails, because I'm used to a few of my other
lists where I don't have to worry about it.

Again, Hugo I'm sorry for being a bit testy, but I hope this explains my
self a little more, and Andreas, thanks for your input! Can't we all
just get along. ;)

Regards,
Max

There are so many parts of your own infrastructure
that you haven't told us about that answering this question is impossible..

So you changed your monitoring enviornment, and things
don't work the same way.. What did you expect?

I will recommend one thing:

Diagnose your network. If you can't do that, find
someone who can: your I.T. staff or a Consultant.

What is different between your old setup and your
new setup which has problems?

That is a question you need to ask yourself and the
rest of your I.T. staff, posting a question like this to a mailing list
is pointless.

Good luck!

rob

It's ok for some hosts/services. But if you like to monitor a lot of

configuration. There is AFAIK no configuration tool.

This is actually the preferred way of sending to mailinglists where
non-subscribers are allowed to post, because the original poster would
otherwise be cut out of the loop. As there's no way of telling if a
poster *is* on this list (no, I don't know if it can be posted to
without subscribing, and I can't be bothered with checking), the only
sane way to make sure the original poster and everyone participating in
a thread is to reply to all and hope that people on the list have taken
the 3 minutes it takes to set up filters to delete duplicate messages
*hint, hint*.

The "send-only-to-list-when-replying" option is really only useful if
only subscribers can post to the list. I assume those other lists are of
that kind.

Hugo, chill out. Max, you did the right thing. If this list is
subscriber only, then whoever set it up botched the job and need to fix
it (although I'm sure SF would be perfectly capable of screwing it up
and leaving it screwed for all eternity no matter how much grief it causes).
