Re: [Nagios-users] nsclient, is it still an acceptable method to monitor nt

2007-11-09 Thread Anthony Montibello
Thanks Andreas, Good Description of the differences,

However, you forgot to mension NC_Net also supports NSCA for Passive checks.

So in my eyes, each flavor of the current Windows Plugins offers a different
set of enhancements,

NSCLIENT++ has NRPE and some other enhancements
NC_NET has NSCA, event logs, RunScripts,WMI,... (And supports Whitespace in
Service names)
OpMon - may be introducing NRPE soon? and hopefully other enhancements

All three are compatible to the Check_NT from the official Plugins and
should return similar results.

[Nagios-users] Nagios web interface is blank but checks are running

2007-11-09 Thread Erik Froese
Everything was going fine with nagios until I changed a command today.
I added -t 20 to the check_ssh command definition and restarted.

Now the web interface gives the error.
There doesn't appear to be any host status information in the status log...

Make sure that Nagios is running and that you have specified the
location of you status log correctly in the configuration files.

That would suggest some kind of error reading the config files no?
So I checked the config files (/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v
/usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios/cfg). It gave the correct host, contact,
service, ... etc counts and reports no errors or warnings.

The permissions on the config files are fine as far as I can see.

Interestingly the objects.cache file is empty.
The nagios.log file is also empty
var/*.dat are also empty

So somehow nagios is loading up the configs, running checks, and
sending notifications but when asked for information about what it
monitoring, it says nothing.

Any ideas?

[Nagios-users] Nagios performance query

2007-11-09 Thread Carson Gaspar
(Disclosure - I'm giving an invited talk at LISA next week on Nagios)

I'm trying to determine the maximum active check rate that Nagios can
sustain on a given system. I'm rather surprised that I can't seem to get
more than about 3 checks per second. Am I just being dense? (I haven't
used anything but passive checks for years now, so my active check foo
is stale...)

Nagios config settings (testing with 2.9, which is what we're using in
production):

service_inter_check_delay_method=0.01 (tried s as well...)
service_interleave_factor=s
host_inter_check_delay_methos=0.01 (tried s as well)
max_concurrent_checks=0
service_reaper_frequency=1
sleep_time=0.01

performance stats show svc execution at 0 / .8 / .459, svc latency at 0
/ 10467.99 / 4475.5599 (3 hours after launch, with only 32708 / 5
services checked)

I never see more than 9 nagios procs at once. The config is large (5000
hosts with 10 services each). The service checks are a simple c program
that sleeps for half a second then returns OK.

Is this really the best Nagios can do, or am I missing something?

Re: [Nagios-users] Still can't, and needing guidance SNMP issue

2007-11-09 Thread Christy . New

Thanks, I have already read this, I even printed out the300 page manual. I
am slowly working threw it. There are parameter's, which have to be
changed to mirror your devices, however the manual, isn't that clear on
some things. I sent another email, which I answered some questions, and
clarrified more. This should help you get me moving in the right
direction.

As far as SNMP I know my devices are running it, because we use it for
Openview and Solarwinds, and PRTG. I downloaded this but have trouble
pointing the files to the right folders, which they need to be in when they
are extracted.

Nagios-snmp-plugins.1.1.1.tgz is the plug in I download.

Try reading some documentation:

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/installing.html

Googling for Nagios & libexec will also tell you where libexec would
normally be. But it completely depends on how and where Nagios was
originally installed. We are not psychic.

You might want to ask someone who knows more about Linux to give you
some pointers, Nagios is complicated enough to work out for people who
are seasoned Linux users, let alone those who are new to it.

/usr/libexec, and /usr/local/libexec is the quick answer to your

very helpful:

collected by a separate program called MRTG (which must be installed,
configured and running properly in order to generate the log file

- Nagios command definition for the plugin
- Nagios service definition for the service calling this command.

2007-11-09 Thread joseph . petrucci
I do not have a script that will log in to the application.

I run scripts that get status's from
$COMMON_TOP/admin/scripts/$CONTEXT_NAME.

I also monitor long running concurrent manager jobs through SQL.

What are you trying to monitor I can probably give you a script to do it.

What other oracle application besides the database are you interested in
monitoring? Looks like you need to explain your goals a bit more
clearly.

Are you _sure_ this is the notification command being used? The reason I
ask is that you appear to be using the macro correctly but this is an
issue that has only ever been seen when the wrong macro is used (i.e.
$DATETIME$ from nagios-1.x). For some reason I'm under the impression
that the debian packages are shipped with incorrect macros used. Did you
have to change them? Did you restart nagios after and verify that there
is only one nagios daemon running?

If described as shown in the above-mentioned ,
It is sure to become the following formats

* Nagios *

Notification Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$
Host: $HOSTALIAS$
State: $HOSTSTATE$ for $HOSTDURATION$
Address: $HOSTADDRESS$
Info:

$HOSTOUTPUT$

Date/Time: $LONGDATETIME$

ACK by: $HOSTACKAUTHOR$
Comment: $HOSTACKCOMMENT$

> "** $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$ alert $NOTIFICATIONNUMBER$ - $HOSTALIAS$/$SERVICEDESC$

This is sure to become as follows, too.

* Nagios  *

Notification Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$

Service: $SERVICEDESC$
Host: $HOSTALIAS$
State: $SERVICESTATE$ for $SERVICEDURATION$
Address: $HOSTADDRESS$

Info:

$SERVICEOUTPUT$

Date/Time: $LONGDATETIME$

ACK by: $SERVICEACKAUTHOR$
Comment: $SERVICEACKCOMMENT$

I think that another notification settings caused the problem .

This means that nagios will check the service every 10 minutes until
there is a problem, then it will perform 1 check 1 minute later and send
a notification if it's still in a non-OK state. All future checks return
to the 10 minute interval, even if it's still in a non-OK state.
retry_check_interval is only used up to max_check_attempts.

Once the service enters a hard state, it will be checked at the normal
check_interval.

The service is only checked once a minute (using the retry_interval)
while it is in a SOFT state.

The documentation does explain this quite well, I am not sure whether
you can change this, but you won't be getting accurate downtime (to the
minute) anyway, because you normally only check the service once every
10minutes, so it could already have been down for ten minutes when it
first enters the SOFT state.

As Giles says, you really do need to have some understanding of the OS
you're running Nagios on. Different OS's can install different bits of
Nagios in different places, for one thing.

Normal Behaviour:

Scheduling During Problems

So what happens when there are problems with a service? Well, one of the
things that happens is the service check scheduling changes. If you've
configured the max_attempts option of the service definition to be
something greater than 1, Nagios will recheck the service before
deciding that a real problem exists. While the service is being
rechecked (up to max_attempts times) it is considered to be in a "soft"
state (as described here) and the service checks are rescheduled at a
frequency determined by the retry_interval option.

If Nagios rechecks the service max_attempts times and it is still in a
non-OK state, Nagios will put the service into a "hard" state, send out
notifications to contacts (if applicable), and start rescheduling future
checks of the service at a frequency determined by the check_interval
option.

[Nagios-users] Service scheduling

2007-11-09 Thread Jerad Riggin
I have a checkstring service that kicks off every 10 minutes. After
failure it will retry every minute. We're trying to track
availability on some of our servers so this is its purpose. However I
noticed this morning that a host went down, I received a PING 100%
packet loss alert, and shortly after within the same minute an alert
that it couldn't find the HTTP string. However, by 7:50 PING was ok,
and HTTP didn't return ok until 8:00 AM. If it's retrying every
minute (or should be), why is there such a large gap?

What snmp plugin are you talking about? There are plenty out there
What version of Nagios are you talking about?
Perhaps if you provide some of your configuration, we might be able to

[Nagios-users] RES: nsclient, is it still an acceptable method to monitor nt

2007-11-09 Thread Dario B. Bestetti

We are working (but slowly) to use the same protocol used/defined by Tony in
NC_net, but so far, we decided to stick with an "upgrade" of the old NSClient
without the use of .NET framework. The problem for us is that most of our
customers doesn´t want to install the .NET framework and we don´t want to force
them.

We´ll have a new version of OpMon Agent in a few days, with some improvements,
but our project is definitly different from NC_net.

NSClient++ has a nasty bug on the option to check services. It can't
handle services that contain white space in their names.

Hello,

on a fresh install of Nagios 2.6 on Debian Etch, I got a strange problem that I

* Nagios  *

Notification Type: PROBLEM

Service: Test Nagios

NSClient++ has a nasty bug on the option to check services. It can't
handle services that contain white space in their names.

They aren't really forks. OpServices have simply taken over maintainership
of NSClient (more or less, as the original author seems to have vanished).
NSClient++ is a re-implementation in C++, with support for NRPE style script
based checks as well. NC_Net does things through dot net stuff and some m$
voodoo, but incorporates the NSClient mode of address since that's what the
official plugins support.

So it's really three different agents.

I had this same quandary sometime back.

Options were

NSClient (seems too old, not being developed)
NSClient++ (presumably enhanced in some way)
OpServices version of NSClient (still being developed)
NC_Net (still being developed)

In the end I simply went with NC_Net and it appears to work for us just
fine, and I often see the author on this list, which tells me that he's
still involved with Nagios in some way.

It would be nice if all the different people who independently developed
all the different versions 'unforked' their efforts though :-), it would
make the decision on which one to use much easier, by having a lack of
choice!!
