I 've been searched in google, can't find a link for that. The one at Nagios
 website is broken.

nagios is so much more then just a couple of webpages. I suggest you grab
one of the Virtual machines with Nagios on it from the catalog on the
VmWare site and play a bit with it in a virtual machine.

There really is no substitute for getting your feet wet other then taking

Hi,

well I did. But just used the default maps. I don't see any reason to put so
much efforts in painting some visio maps to render a better idea of the
network and services map. I tried it, then I removed. Painting is way too hard
for me :-P

2007-11-26 Thread Giles Coochey
If you post in plain text, it's much easier for me not to top post.

This is likely something to do with your socket file.

Check the socket file in ndo2db configuration file, mine is in:

/opt/nagios/var/ndo.sock

It is referenced in ndo2db.cfg with this line:

socket_name=/opt/nagios/var/ndo.sock

if socket exists, it may have been created with insufficient
permissions, or the directory mask was bad, remove the file, check
permissions and restart ndo.

Thanks

Giles

Re: [Nagios-users] [Nagiosplug-help] jabber notification

2007-11-26 Thread Giles Coochey

Below

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of
Giles Coochey
Sent: 19 November 2007 13:02
To: nagiosplug
Subject: [Nagiosplug-help] jabber notification

Hi All,

I have seen the notify_by_jabber perl script.

Because of the number of notifications that I get through some passive
volatile service checks I was wondering whether anyone has seen one that
was compiled in C rather than perl, as Nagios seems to take quite a
while running the notification script when I get a flood of events - I'm
thinking that a C program might be faster.

Are there any jabber alternatives to the perl script?

If there isn't one then I'll look at using sec.pl to handle these
passive checks (they're SNMP traps, after all) and only produce a single
alert (so far they've been routing topology change notifications from
multiple routers switches in our infrastructure).

Best Regards,

Giles

##

I've tried replacing the notify_via_jabber.pl perl script with centerim.
It essentially allows to run centerim in the background (as the Nagios)
user, and allows me to, as the Nagios user, send jabber alerts via the
command line.

A small issue is that as soon as I modify my commands.cfg to have a
notification I find it does not work, and cannot seem to talk to the
centerim process (centerim is running as the Nagios user).

This is what works from the command line:

echo Host '$HOSTALIAS$' is $HOSTSTATE$ - Info: $HOSTOUTPUT$ - Time:
$LONGDATETIME$ | /usr/local/bin/centerim -s msg -p jab -t
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is what doesn't work from the commands.cfg file:

# 'notify-by-jabber' command definition
define command{
command_namenotify-by-jabber
command_line/bin/echo Service: $SERVICEDESC$ - Host:
$HOSTNAME$ - Address: $HOSTADDRESS$ - State: $SERVICESTATE$ - Info:
$SERVICEOUTPUT$ - Date: $LONGDATETIME$ | /usr/local/bin/centerim -s msg
-p jab -t [EMAIL PROTECTED]
}

From the Nagios log, I see it calling notify-by-jabber but I get no such
alert (I was using $CONTACTPAGER$ as the -t parameter, but tried
hardcoding it in the command and it still doesn't work).

Any ideas as to what might cause this?

On an aside, I have implemented sec.pl, but still have Nagios spending
too much time processing notifications, so really need to replace the
slow notify_by_jabber perl script. Centerim looks ideal, but for some
reason isn't working.

[Nagios-users] Passive service notification after X minutes

2007-11-26 Thread Mohr James
Hi All!

We have an application that sends SNMP traps to a trap server. Which
then uses send_nsca to send status changes. The application may notice a
problem and send a trap, thus changing the status of the Nagios service,
but the problem is self-correcting and the application may be Ok within
just a few seconds. However, the Nagios service has become critical and
thus send a notification. Not a happy thing at 2AM when you are sound
asleep.

Looking through the service definition I do not see anything that
applies. If it were an active service, I could use max_check_attempts.
However, in this cases, we only get the traps on every status change, so
if the service is down, the trap is set and thus the notification is
sent. Within the trap receiver, there is no way to wait a specific
period of time before sending the messages, only wait for X traps in Y
minutes.

I am at a loss as to how to get Nagios to wait for a specific length of
time before starting the notification other than creating some major
kludge like tweaking the notification mechanism somehow. Any help is
appreaciated.

Regards,

Jim Mohr

2007-11-26 Thread Thomas Stocking
You can also try out GroundWork Monitor (without the config tool
enabled) at:
http://adzuki.groundworkopensource.com
login guest, pw guest
This package uses Nagios to feed a back-end mysql database that is used
for multiple displays and reports. It also integrates Cacti, RRDtool
graphing and several other packages.

I agree with Hugo - it's much more than the just the web GUI.

nagios is so much more then just a couple of webpages. I suggest you grab

[Nagios-users] Nagios Doesn't Notify for Multiple Services

2007-11-26 Thread Joel Roberts
I have a server that has been crashing in the following order:

HTTP 80 fails

RDP 3389 fails

TCP/IP Stack fails

I have set up monitoring and notifications for each one, but I only
receive notifications for the first failure, port 80 not responding.
Once RDP fails I don't receive alerts and once the TCP/IP stack fails
(PING stops responding) I don't receive alerts for that either.

It seems like Nagios is seeing one error on the box and repeatedly
alerting about that, but ignoring any others until the first is fixed.
Has anyone else run into this and found a fix? I read through the
documentation for alerts, but don't see anything addressing this
particular issue.

This is a common problem if you happen to have two instances of Nagios
running. So the obvious plan is to stop Nagios the normal way. Then see
if anything is still lingering about and shoot to kill them. Tehn
 startup Nagios again.

If the problem remains also check that you are not mixing startup methods.

[Nagios-users] Nagios Master/Slaves Solution...

2007-11-26 Thread Chris Haulmark
Hello,

Have anyone got any Nagios Master/Slaves solutions that are currently
being used in production?

The reason that I am asking is because I would like to use Nagios to
monitor several hosts/services at

multiple locations. I have at least 4 facilities that I would like to
assign a Slave per facility while the

Master would stay at the office.

Each Slave would be monitoring the hosts and services only within the
facility that it has been assigned.

Firewalls and routings will be in place to prevent the Slaves from
interacting with each other. Only

the Master will be accessible from each of those Slaves.

I have experimented with using NSCA to send passive checks over to the
Master from each of the Slaves.

It seems to be the solution only if I am not concerned about the Master
having a failure or if the route

between the slaves to the Master has been interrupted. I have
considered giving a Slave the ability to self-

promote if this certain Slave detects that Master has became
unavailable. That would also include having

to make modifications to the send_nsca IP Address on those other Slaves.
That includes the firewall and

routing adjustments being required.

I have looked at DNX but I am thinking that it is really designed to
cross check the hosts/services from each

of those Nodes to distribute the work loads. I do not want the Slaves
to overlap each other's territory

unless a certain Slave have been self-promoted.

Anyone have suggestions on a working solution or can point me to some
reading documentations of how

someone have set up a HA Nagios Master/Slaves solution?

Chris

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios Doesn't Notify for Multiple Services

2007-11-26 Thread Joel Roberts
I know this is how the server is failing because of a review of the
Windows Event logs. The server is crashing because of a memory leak.
First it stops accepting incoming HTTP requests to try and conserve what
memory is left, then it stops accepting RDP connections, then the TCP/IP
fails completely. And yes, it is a Mount Everest of problems as it's my
RES PowerFuse server that provides remote desktop to remote users in a
Citrix type environment. Fortunately when the HTTP stops accepting
connections, I can usually log in via RDP remotely and reboot the
server, but I would like to know if I've missed the window and RDP is no
longer up and running and I have to physically drive to the site and
reboot from there. Once RDP fails, TCP/IP is usually right behind it. An
update on OS and PowerFuse software is scheduled, but until then, I have
to keep the remote users up and running.

Assunto: [Nagios-users] Passive service notification after X minutes

  Hi All!

We have an application that sends SNMP traps to a trap
 server. Which
then uses send_nsca to send status changes. The application
 may notice
a problem and send a trap, thus changing the status of the Nagios
service, but the problem is self-correcting and the
 application may be
Ok within just a few seconds. However, the Nagios service
 has become
critical and thus send a notification. Not a happy thing at
 2AM when
  you are sound asleep.

Looking through the service definition I do not see anything that
applies. If it were an active service, I could use
 max_check_attempts.
However, in this cases, we only get the traps on every
 status change,
so if the service is down, the trap is set and thus the
 notification
is sent. Within the trap receiver, there is no way to wait
 a specific
period of time before sending the messages, only wait for X
 traps in Y
  minutes.

I am at a loss as to how to get Nagios to wait for a
 specific length
of time before starting the notification other than creating some
major kludge like tweaking the notification mechanism somehow. Any
  help is appreaciated.

  Regards,

  Jim Mohr

I wrote up some internal docs for myself over a year ago now and don't
mind sharing them:

http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/~brylon/nagios2/

Note: I don't know if this is quite what you are looking for, but
figured I'd share and let you decide if it helps. I would also be
interested in other docs anyone may have with respect to distributed
monitoring and failover redundancy.

[Nagios-users] Bad group on cmd pipe after restart.

2007-11-26 Thread Kevin Scott Sumner
Hi all,

I've got nagios 3.0b6 running on Debian/etch with Debian's default Apache.

Apache runs as www-data:www-data.
Nagios runs as nagios:www-data, set this way via nagios.cfg's nagios_group
command.

In /etc/passwd, nagios has the default group of nagios. (Confusing, I
know, but I'm trying not to stray too far away from the Debian norm.)

When I restart nagios, the command pipe ends up with the group nagios, not
www-data, as I specified in the config. I'm confident in saying that it's
nagios that does this, not the init script. Is this by design or an
oversight? If by design, what have I overlooked or not understood?

Thanks!

Kevin,

Just out of curiosity, why not run Nagios as nagios:nagios? On my setup, the
apache user is a member of the nagios group. Maybe yours is using the nagios
user's default group?

[Nagios-users] Centralizing NRPE Configuration

2007-11-26 Thread Cipriani, Robert C
Does anyone have any suggestions on a way to centralize NRPE configs? I suppose
I can push (rsync, scp, whatever) my nrpe.cfg from the Nagios server if I need
to add any commands. Is there a better way to manage this? I'd like the Nagios
server to be a central point of configuration. I am using nrpe's
--enable-command-args option and passing parameters via check_nrpe, so once the
monitored host has the nrpe.cfg, there wouldn't be much to do there.

What about through SVN? I've never done it, but I just thought of it
when you mentioned centralizing it. I keep track of my Nagios
configuration files this way, but it wouldn't be hard to add NRPE into
the mix so that you can checkout the latest set of files.

Just an idea...

I use cfengine for that purpose. I have it copy the config from the

Re: [Nagios-users] Bad group on cmd pipe after restart.

2007-11-26 Thread Kevin Scott Sumner
Robert,

Affecting the apache user will affect *all* instances of apache in our
infrastructure (regular website, as well as BackupPC's apache, etc). I
know this seems like a broken setup -- it is. :) We're in planning
phases for better machine user/group management, but creating a one-off
machine in terms of users/groups is difficult at the moment because the flat
files
are automatically spawned by some, err... feature challenged
scripts. I'm pushing hard to get this changed, but for now, I can't change
change a user's group membership without it affecting that on every
machine.

I realize I could remedy this situation by running apache as
www-data:nagios on our nagios server, but my question isn't so much about
making it work -- it's about whether nagios is broken in the way that it
deals with creating its command pipe or whether I've over looked something
(a bug vs. my poor brain, if you will).

Cheers,
Kevin

Robert,

I second Aaron's CFengine suggestion.

Moving an infrastructure towards using something like CFengine or puppet
will make you saner in the long run. Much, much saner. Setting it up to
push a single config is a little overboard, but it makes syncing and
sanitizing all of your machines REALLY easy.

We use CFengine here, so feel free to contact me off-list for more
specifics about it.

[Nagios-users] Nagios Looking Glass

2007-11-26 Thread Dhawal Doshy
http://nagioslookingglass.co.uk/ and other sites related to Andy Shellam
(the author) appear to be down since about 2-3 weeks.

Does anyone have news on this site OR have a copy of the latest release?

TIA,

[Nagios-users] Scheduled maintenance

2007-11-26 Thread Greg Martin
We have several services that alert every night during a scheduled
process. (The drive partition drops below the free space limit). We
could reschedule maintenance everyday, but it seems there should be a
better way. Any thoughts on other approaches?

Re: [Nagios-users] Scheduled maintenance

2007-11-26 Thread John R. Daily
We wrote a couple of tools to assist with this scenario. I'm
attaching them.

They leverage an external tool which we wrote to parse the Nagios
configuration and identify/verify hosts, but that dependency can be
removed easily.

We run them from cron. Examples:

55 03 * * * /etc/nagios/tools/toggle-host-notifications --off server1
05 04 * * * /etc/nagios/tools/toggle-host-notifications --on server1

00 02 * * * /etc/nagios/tools/toggle-service-notifications --off --
service HTTP redirect server3.domain.com
40 02 * * * /etc/nagios/tools/toggle-service-notifications --on --
service HTTP redirect server3.domain.com

Right. You run a test version and you want to be handheld in monitoring
a box? Have you checked out previous posting on the subject? What did
you investigate before you posted this question?

I would choose to use two schedules with different monitoring values.

If this is business as usual then your Nagios config should reflect that.
