I just started using nagios.

I have installed yesterday the latest stable build and plugins.

My problem is that on the tactical overview I see @ services 1 warning I

Hi

I'm not sure what OS your running Nagios on, but did you see section 5
on the installation instructions (for Ubuntu):-

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/quickstart-ubuntu.html

It takes you through configuring the web interface for the relevant
users.

I have a nagios 3 server monitoring several other servers. I use a
windows box to get to nagios web. I am not receiving a login screen and
it defaults to the user nagios. I need to open it as the nagiosadmin.

Thanks for your quick response.

Harry,

Configuring nagios for usernames and passwords is usually done in a
.htaccess file in /etc/nagios2 (assuming you are using nagios2!).

Once you have the users configured as you require, setting these
usernames up as contacts for given servers is meant to provide them with
only access to their servers.

What is it you are trying to achieve?

Kind regards,

Note that it's handy to include the matching service and command
definitions for troubleshooting.

 [Mon Jun 02 18:10:59 2008] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Directory

/var/www/html, the site directory for the apache web host that you're
checking, doesn't have a default index page (i.e. index.html,
index.htm or whatever apache is configured to accept). You don't allow
directory listing of that directory in apache so apache generates a
403 Forbidden error as a result. The nagios plugin is reporting
exactly as it should and you do have an HTTP 'problem'.

 And the access_log

 tail access_log

This didn't include the actual check above.

If you're only wanting to check that apache is running on localhost,
I'd suggest just creating a blank index.html file in /var/www/html. If
you're wanting to verify that a specific virtual host is running,
you'll want to add a -H and possibly -u parameter to check_http. You
can run 'check_http --help' to see the parameters it understands. This
is getting into more advanced topics and I'd suggest reading the
documentation and examining the sample config files so that you
understand the interaction between service{} check_commands and
command{} definitions.

Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring Windows Eventviewer

2008-06-03 Thread Frater, Greg J

  Thanks for the info,

Great that it can be done with the NSClient++ as I have it installed
on all our servers.

What do I need to define in the NSClient++ agent and where ?

Is it in the .ini file or elsewhere ?

The only thing you need to do on the Windows server is enable the
CheckEventLog.dll by removing the semicolon from that line in the
nsc.ini file.

Subject: Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring Windows Eventviewer

Dear All,

Would anyone have experience in checking the windows eventviewer for
certain events, or turning nagios red in case of ERRORs ?

What script are you using ? preferably something that can simply
interact with NSClient

We do this using the NSClient++ agent (www.nsclient.org
file:///\\www.nsclient.org ). It checks the event logs and filters
them based on criteria you define, alerting when the number of hits you
specify is reached (i.e. when the system log has 1 or more events with
an ID of within the last 10 minutes send alerts). Here is an
example we use to monitor for a specific Oracle error. In the example
we check the application log of the server every 60 minutes for
events with an ID of 20 with event type of Error containing a string
in the text of the message Can not allocate log, check turns critical
after 1 matching event is found that is time stamped within the last
65 minutes.

Checkcommands.cfg:
define command{
command_namecheck_eventlogs
command_line$USER1$/check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -p 5666 -c
checkEventLog -a filter=new $ARG1$ MaxWarn=$ARG2$ MaxCrit=$ARG3$

warning response)
# $ARG3$ = Critical level (i.e. number of hits to generate a
critcal response)
# $ARG4$ = Time period (i.e. 1 day is '1d' 30 hours is '30h')
#   $ARG5$ = Filters (i.e. filter-eventID==9009
filter-eventSource=Tcpip) see
http://www.nsclient.org/nscp/wiki/CheckEventLog/CheckEventLog

}

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios with NDOUtils is not working any more.

2008-06-03 Thread Marcin Praczko

Hi

'about 4'oclock' is a typical start time for cron.daily, cron.weekly
and cron.monthly scripts, at least under Redhat and clones, all of
which ran recently. Is there anything interesting set to run in those?
Database backups, anything like that? You have free disk space on your
 database partition?

Yes, I checked cron tasks before I send this post. There was enough free space
on partitions.

I've seen this when ndo2db is doing it's initial logging to the
database and database cleanup tasks. I too couldn't get debug to show
anything but saw this activity using strace on the process. That
initial process was taking a lng time and seems to be noted in
various places. 'mysqladmin showprocesslist' will show you any active
connections to the database and a general idea of what it's doing. You
could also try using 'strace -fs512 -p pid of ndo2db ' as root to
see if it's doing anything. You can use CTRL-C to quit out of strace.
I've found that using the 'Retain status file over a reload' patch at
  http://www.altinity.org
works to mask the problem from the GUI.

Cheers - strace helped me.

I saw that ndo2db can't write to debug log file (wrong permissions).
So I changed permissions and I removed one database (old nagios_backup) from
MySQL.
Don't know which helped but one of above solutions helped.
I think that was problem with permission, but log from strace shown that ndo2db
asking DB and sending a lot queries.

I recently experienced something similar.  The reason for it is that
the plugin option to discard old data was disabled, and my servicechecks
table grew to a size that MySQL didn't like.  If you can't insert a record
in that table from PHPMyAdmin (or the command line), that may be your
 problem.

I was able to write to database and I already have setting to removed the
oldest data from database. So problem was somewhere else.

Thank you for your help.

Frankly. No. Since there is nothing in your message even remoty telling
us how you did setup Nagios to transfer the message to your MTA nor how
 you did configure your MTA.

So help yourself by showing us relevant information like:

MTA? First off, check out this site: http://google.com and type MTA in the

Ignore the Transit Administration links - then read the wikipedia on it

Any flavor of MTA will suffice (such as sendmail) to send mail

[Nagios-users] Newbie with Nagios

2008-06-03 Thread Reynier Perez Mira
Hi,
I'm starting with Nagios and have a lot of problem and the doc is not enough
for me. I have Nagios configured in Linux (Ubuntu Server 8.04). I need to
check, for now, 4 servers: 2 Linux and 2 Windows Server 2003. For the Windows
Server I have configured NSClient++. Now I get a mail from Nagios every time
with 5 minutes between. I mean one mail arrive the system wait 5 minutes and
send me the same email. The content of this email is:

* Nagios *
Notification Type: PROBLEM

Service: C:\ Drive Space
Host: Salva IP Server 2
Address: 10.128.50.100
State: WARNING

Date/Time: Mon Jun 2 23:47:07 CDT 2008
Additional Info:
c:\ - total: 17.46 Gb - used: 14.02 Gb (80%) - free 3.44 Gb (20%)

What this mean? How can I stop this and just receive email's when system is
critical or down or restarting or something else?

Cheers and thanks in advance

You really need to read through the documentation. It is very
 comprehensive
and will show you how to configure alerts, during what time period, how
often, and at what notification level you want. You will find all your
answers to these basic (and advanced) questions there. Start with that
 first
and understand how Nagios works before posting basic questions here that
 are
answered in the documentation. With only 4 servers it shouldn't take
 long to
 configure the way you want.

 Hi,
I read the doc before start posting here. I have Nagios configured in
Ubuntu Server 8.04 as I said before. Now look like I touch any file
because when I try to access to Service Detail item I get this error:

It appears as though you do not have permission to view information for
any of the services you requested...
If you believe this is an error, check the HTTP server authentication
 requirements for accessing this CGI
and check the authorization options in your CGI configuration file.

I check also the corresponding to authentication/authorization topic in
doc but I can't find where the problem is. I just touch the contact
address in /usr/local/nagios/etc/contacts.cfg file and now the content
 look like this:

Have you checked the HTTP server authentication requirements for accessing this

You do not show your config. But the message is clear. You passed the
warning value for this disk so the system warns you.

If you have set things up to warn every 5 minutes then you got exactly
what asked for.

The basic thing missing here is your configuration details. How did you
define that service?
