[Nagios-users] Active Check Schedule Accuracy

2012-09-17 Thread Nair
Friends

I have log parsing active check scheduled to run at 23:59 HRS every day. Time
period defined as below:

define timeperiod{

   timeperiod_name daily_23_59

   alias Daily at 23_59HRS, 7 Days A Week

   sunday  23:59-24:00

--

However multiple times i have observed the check schedule got advanced at
23:58:58 HRS.

Is there any way by which we can tune the active checks more accurately?

Thank you

Nair

That depends on you reporting tool.

Say if you use a perl script, dont think its a tough job to parse nagios logs

I could see few pathes with respect to nsca and nrpe for ipv6 support. And i

Any advice on same? Also do i need to patch nagioa for ipv6 support?

Nair,

As all good consultants would say, "It depends."

There is a small network load for every test so setting shorter intervals
increases the load. If you double the number of tests in an hour, you double
the load.  So if you have a large number of tests on a large number of
machines, doubling the frequency of the tests is probably a bad idea. What
value do you think would accrue from increasing the frequency of tests?

In my network, Nagios is set to start sending email notifications if the
failure condition persists more than 3 test periods, i.e., the remote disk root
partition is unreachable for longer than 30 minutes.  This particular test
fails on my ftp server during large file transfers, with the message, plug-in
timed out.  This has not turned out to be an actual problem, but is an artifact
of flooding the network with file-transfer traffic.  In this case it is more
sensible to let the file transfers go through than to know to an utmost
certainty that the drive is not too full.

YMMV

I do not believe there is a build in Nagios function for this but..

How about a wrapper script for the check command (ether server or client side)
that would check the time and use the appropriate thresholds. This could be
achieved in Shell or Perl or X scripting language relatively  simply.

Nevermind the issue. It was something simpel as I guessed. I forgot to
pass $ARGn$ on red5_restart command definition on red5 server.

command[restart_red5]=/usr/local/bin/restart_red5.sh $ARG1$ $ARG2$ $ARG3$

No more manual restarts! :D

Let Crystal Reports hand

[Nagios-users] help: nrpe + event handler

2009-11-19 Thread Arun G Nair
Hi,

  We use red5 to stream media files on our website. Sometimes the RSS
reaches 3.2GB of memory and it stops serving requests. Hence I've to
restart the service when ever it reaches the limit. I was doing this
manually for sometime and today I decided to make an event handler for
this. We use Nagios 2.6 on Debian etch. So on the nagios server I
created a service definition

define service{
use system-service
host_name flash1-server
service_description   check-red5-process-memory-size
event_handlerrestart_red5
check_command check_nrpe_1arg!check_red5_proc_mem
}

And the command definition for the event handler:

define command{
command_name   restart_red5
command_line   check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c restart_red5
-a $SERVICESTATE$ $SERVICESTATETYPE$ $SERVICEATTEMPT$
}

Now, on the red5 server I've defined the commands as:

#check RSS of red5
command[check_red5_proc_mem]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_procs -C
java -a 'red5' -w 290 -c 310 --metric=RSS
# event handler to restart red5
command[restart_red5]=/usr/local/bin/restart_red5.sh

I've added 'nagios' to /etc/sudoers:
red5:~# grep 'nagios' /etc/sudoers
nagios  ALL= NOPASSWD: /etc/init.d/red5 restart

Below is the restart_red5.sh script:
---
#!/bin/sh

# Event handler for nagios
# restarts red5 daemon when its memory consumption reaches 3GB
# args passed: $SERVICESTATE$ $SERVICESTATETYPE$ $SERVICEATTEMPT$
/usr/bin/logger -t nrpe "$@"
case "$1" in
OK) ;;
WARNING) ;;
UNKNOWN) ;;
CRITICAL)
case "$2" in
SOFT)
case "$3" in
3)
/usr/bin/logger -t nrpe 'Restarting red5 server...'
/usr/bin/sudo /etc/init.d/red5 restart
/usr/bin/pgrep java && /usr/bin/logger -t nrpe
'Successfully restarted red5 server...'
;;
esac
;;
HARD)
/usr/bin/logger -t nrpe 'Restarting red5 server...'
/usr/bin/sudo /etc/init.d/red5 restart
/usr/bin/pgrep java && /usr/bin/logger -t nrpe
'Successfully restarted red5 server...'
;;
esac
;;
esac

echo 'Done'
exit 0
---

And now about the issue I have. From the nagios log on the server, I
can see that the event handler gets invoked. But on the red5 server,
nothing happens. As you can see from the script, I log to syslog.
Nothing shows up in the log. If I manually issue the check_nrpe
command from the nagios server, I just get 'Done' as reply, whatever
the values I pass as argument.

nagios:~# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H red5_server -c
restart_red5 -a CRITICAL HARD 3
Done

logger doesn't print the arguments passed to the syslog as instructed
in the script. If I print $# (the number of args), its always 0. My
guess is that the arguments $SERVICESTATE$ $SERVICESTATETYPE$
$SERVICEATTEMPT$ are not getting passed to the script. I have tried
passing the arguments in the service definition itself

define service{
use system-service
host_name flash1-server
service_description   check-red5-process-memory-size
event_handlerrestart_red5!$SERVICESTATE$
$SERVICESTATETYPE$ $SERVICEATTEMPT$
check_command check_nrpe_1arg!check_red5_proc_mem
}

define command{
command_name   restart_red5
command_line   check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c restart_red5 -a $ARG1$
}

It didn't have any effect as well.

What am I doing wrong here ? Am sure its something simple, but I can't
seem to get to it. Please help.

TIA

Re: [Nagios-users] Service Dependency Config

2009-04-13 Thread Nair
Thanks you, Lei. But, I have two web servers in cluster. Webserver may be
online in any one of the servers. So I have defined www services in web servers
- host1 and host2. And dont need an alert when www is online in any one of the
servers.

Is there any config to support this senario.

Thank you
Nair.

[Nagios-users] Return code of 127

2008-08-13 Thread Nair
Dear All,

Using Nagios 2.11 with mysql DB using ndo2db plugin.

I am getting below error and the Nagios server hangs down.

(Return code of 127 is out of bounds - plugin may be missing)

Nagiosstat output:

Used/High/Total Command Buffers:  2561 / 2561 / 32268
Used/High/Total Check Result Buffers: 0 / 0 / 4096

I could see more than 33,000 of NSCA process running where the command buffer
is only 4096.
Resolved the problem temprorly by increasing the command buffer to 35,000.

Still I am under assumption that Mysql query is the root cause of the issue.

Please share your ideas, if hav gone simialr issues.

Thank you.
Nair.

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios Config Script

2008-03-17 Thread Nair
Sure.

I need to monitor CPU/MEM/HDD/Application etc on a Data Center Environment
having more than 200 Servers right now and it keeps on adding.

I need to automate Nagios *.cfg file creation and updation. Say i will mention
all system IPs and services, contact , contact group etc in a tab seperated
text file and a script should take care of file creation and updation.

Could not find much details NACE and not good at scripting :(

Can you give some ideas, how to go ahead on this.

Thanks,

Nair.

Re: [Nagios-users] Integrating MIBs with Nagios

2008-03-08 Thread Nair
As i understand check_snmp internally used net-snmpd for its snmp communication.

In that case if that any use of keeping new MIBs to /usr/share/snmp/mibs of
Nagios server.

Also, is there any tool to read OID from MIB files.

Please clarify.

Thanks,

Manu.
