[Nagios-users] Need Help with Formatting URL for Host/Service Acknowledgment
Hello, I'm trying to include a URL in my alert emails that will allow the user to acknowledge the alert by clicking on the URL. I'm having trouble with the formatting so that the host and service will be passed to cmd.cgi correctly. When I define notes_url as follows the '' and spaces in the service description don't translate to a proper url format. Does anyone know how can translate this information valid URL to be included into my alert emails? notes_url http://example.com/nagios/cgi-bin/cmd.cgi?cmd_typ=34host=$HOSTNAME$service=$SERVICEDESC$ Here is an example of an expected output: http://example.com/nagios/cgi-bin/cmd.cgi?cmd_typ=34host=host.example.comservice=SSH%20Check Here is an example of the actual output: http://example.com/nagios/cgi-bin/cmd.cgi?cmd_typ=34host=host.example.comservice=SSH%2BCheckhttp://monitor.chpc.utah.edu/nagios/cgi-bin/cmd.cgi?cmd_typ=34host=hypno-hustler.chpc.utah.eduservice=SSH%2BCheck%2BIPv4 As you can see the '' is missing and the space in 'SSH Check' is coded as %2B not %20. -- *Robert V. [Nagios-users] Need help on running combination of Nagios, Nconf, and Nagiosgraph
Hi, I am new to Nagios and I am having problem to put all this applications together. I have very limited knowledge of all this tools and availability, so I need experts help on this. Here are the steps that I went thru: I installed Nagios in one of my Linux server. In the same machine but different directory I Installed Nconf to add about 70 hosts with about five services for each hosts. I have to add about 200 more hosts. I used CSV (comma-separated values) file to store the data. Now, I need graph so I installed Nagiosgraph and I am trying to make it work since last two weeks, but it is not working. When I reload nagios, it runs fine and I see the icon to brows to the graph, but when I click on it, I get following error: (Server error! The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script. ) If you think I didn't select right tool to add hosts and for graph, what is better tools to add bunch of servers and to get the graphs. I also have some switches to monitor too. Thanks Notice: This e-mail message, together with any attachments, contains information of Merck Co., Inc. I have a Dell PE2950 with PERC 5/i. The server suffered a failed disk under RAID 0. I obtained a replacement disk, rebuilt the system from the ground up (new logical volumes within the controller, new OS install) and the system is happy now. I installed nagios on a low-end PC (CentOS 5), and obtained nrpe from Nagios, installed a couple OpenManage plugins - Report and Storage. [Nagios-users] Need help with nrpe
I have some Dell PowerEdge Linux servers that I want to monitor with nrpe. I've installed nrpe daemon on the servers, and nrpe client on my nagios station, which is a simple low-end desktop. I've configured nrpe enough that nagios at least presents me with a service line on the server that the service has returned a response it cannot handle - not an error, but more of a null. I'm trying to get some perl scripts from nagiosexchange to be utilized. I am able to run the scripts fine from the command line and see their details, but having problems figuring out how to properly configure nagios to get me the results properly. I've got the OpenManage scripts, along with some basic Dell Hardware ones. Beyond this, I may implement similar configurations on non Dell hardware, so getting it working here can lead me to configurations in a more flexible environment. All plugins should go in /usr/local/nagios/libexec folder, the plugin should be made executable. You can reference the path to the libexec folder by specifying the path of the plugins in resource.cfg file. Hello Nagios users and lovers: I have Nagios successfully running on a CentOS 5 system, keeping an eye on two servers and two printers. What I'd love to do next is augment what I have with monitoring such as: - Hard drive health (SMART) - Printer paper/toner status - Specific services running on particular parts (i.e. port 9613/udp) - Temperature of system(if possible) - Network card activity (if multiple nics, has one failed or is a link down and the NIC is good)? How do I monitor these particulars, or do I need to obtain the specific MIB for said device and see if that mib provides said details? Thanks in advance. Hi Scott, First of all, if the device(s) use SNMP, you can pull the specific OID you intend to monitor. You can use check_udp to monitor any UDP port. Temperature of system, I can't say but you can dig up on this using google. If you can monitor the NICs with SNMP which I am sure you can, you can be able to find out what information you need. At first, I thought this could be a 32 vs. 64-bit issue, but the Nagios host is 64-bit while both remotes are 32. From the command line, both hosts work fine and 'echo $?' shows 0 for both. Logging into the remote boxes and running check_disk manually is fine as well. Using -v doesn't help since it doesn't show tracing information. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this? Re: [Nagios-users] Need help
Been using nagios since 1.0, and I think the methodology has shifted a little, but I am still old skool. I finally got Nagios working and into the web panel. Excellent! :-) Now, how on earth do I ADD new services to monitor??? In your nagios implementation there should be a series of config files underneath the etc directory. In there will be something called nagios.cfg. There will be a bunch of config files specified thus: cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/contactgroups.cfg cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/contacts.cfg cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/dependencies.cfg cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/escalations.cfg cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/hostgroups.cfg cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/hosts.cfg cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/services.cfg cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/timeperiods.cfg These files are what you use to configure nagios. In the hosts file you can specify a host like this: # 'SydInt01' host definition define host{ use generic-host; Name of host template to use host_name SydInt01 alias SydB2 address 172.30.20.244 check_command check-host-alive max_check_attempts 10 notification_interval 480 notification_period 24x7 notification_optionsd,u,r contact_groups npsadmins Once the host is defined, you specify the services in the services.cfg. For example: define service{ use generic-service ; Name of service template to use host_name SydInt01 service_description PING is_volatile 0 check_period24x7 max_check_attempts 11 normal_check_interval 5 retry_check_interval1 contact_groups fw notification_interval 120 notification_period 24x7 notification_optionsc,r check_command check_ping!1000.0,20%!5000.0,100% } I hope this helps some. Zion Ahead wrote: I finally got Nagios working and into the web panel. Now, how on earth do I ADD new services to monitor??? By editing your services.cfg file. You should have done something along the lines of make install-config after having installed the nagios core and cgi binaries. If you use a distro that ships nagios pre-packaged you should be able to find your nagios config in /etc/nagios. The docs are so disgustingly confusing http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3...cservices.html http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/monitoring-publicservices.html Quote: Before you can monitor a service, you first need to define a host http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/objectdefinitions.html#host that is associated with the service. If you have already created a host definition, you can skip this step. It's actually the services that are associated with hosts, but that's a minor nitpick. Each service in Nagios belongs to one or more hosts, in much the same way that only one web-server / connection is actually serving content to a client. Both services and hosts use command objects as definitions on how to run a particular check. Each check is performed by a very small and simple program, commonly known as a plugin. The command objects simply define where to find the plugin and what argument to pass to it. Usually, multiple command objects refer to the same plugin. So.. in order for you to create a service-check, you'll need a command object definition, a host object and a service object. You'll also need at least one timeperiod object (make install-config provides several that will work nicely). Examples of such objects can be found in the documentation, which I notice you've already located. Quote: The host definition can be placed in its own file or added to an already exiting object configuration file. What? Where does the file go? What name? This is crazy. make install-config or rpm -ql nagios should provide some hints. If you've already done the make install-config thing, your example config files should be in $prefix/etc, or $sysconfdir if you specified that. Nagios doesn't even have a forum except that lame international one that is inactive/dead. True. It has this list (and a few others) instead. Some projects use web-forums, most use mailing lists. Webforums generally require more work to manage, so a properly archived mailing list is what most OSS projects use as it's basically maintenance-free once the list-server is set up. Personally I detest webforums with a passion as I need to actively check it to keep up with what's going on in insert-project-of-choice. I can't help but make the observation that you don't seem to like Nagios but still seem quite determined to install it. Usually such emotions and actions only occur when The Suits have shoved some decision down some poor technicians throat against their will. To ease your pain, I suggest you stick to using the latest stable nagios (2.9) or contact a support-company that help you get up and running. It's normally not very expensive and you will be able to show management a quick return of investment. The market-leading Nagios company in the US is IT Groundworks, which you'll find at http://www.groundworkopensource.com/ In Europe it's op5, which you'll find at http://www.op5.com (yes, it's where I work). [Nagios-users] need help with my custom perl plugin
Hey all ... I need to use nagios to check that a remote mail server can reach its relay. the remote mail server is an appliance and all i can do on it is run a telnet. to do this i've written a perl plugin that ssh's from the nagios box to the appliance and then executes a telnet to the mail relay's port 25. the script works perfectly on the command line - i can get all states (warn, crit and ok). Now, when i move it into nagios, i can only get critical and warning states. for some reason, my test and exit for the OK state just gets missed and the plugin returns the default warning status from the scripts last few lines (see below). i'm new to perl and nagios plugin writing, so i've probably messed up some fundamental thing here ... but i can't seem to get it ... any thoughts/corrections/criticisms/comments are greatly appreciated. here's the script: #!/usr/bin/perl -w use strict; use utils qw(%ERRORS $TIMEOUT); # in case we just hang - $SIG{ALRM} = sub { print CRITICAL: Plugin timed out.\n; exit 2 }; alarm(10); my ($host, $key, $remote) = @ARGV; unless ($host and $key and $remote) { die Usage: $0 hostname ssh_key remote_mail_server\n; } # default error # my $connect_result = Remote Test Failure; open (SSH, ssh -i $key $host telnet $remote 25|) or die Can't open pipe: $!; # iterate through the loop and skip lines that don't have what we want. then, store the last var - we know the telnet action is 4 lines while (SSH){ next if /^Trying/; next if /^Connected/; next if /^Escape/; if ($_ =~ /^220/) { print $_ this works; exit($ERRORS{'OK'}); } else { print Connect died at: $_; exit($ERRORS{'CRITICAL'}); } close SSH; } print fell thru; exit($ERRORS{'WARNING'}); close SSH; again, if i change the if statements to create an error (change ^Trying to ^rying for instance) nagios reports critical and clearly uses: else { print Connect died at: $_; exit($ERRORS{'CRITICAL'}); } and $_ is set to the line that didn't match and caused the error ... but when all those conditions ARE met nagios always makes it right past if ($_ =~ /^220/) { print $_ this works; exit($ERRORS{'OK'}); and gives me print fell thru; exit($ERRORS{'WARNING'}); printing out $_ in the while loop has the expected 220 line ... ok ... hope this is not too verbose; sorry if this is just such bad code that you all wanna slap me down! :-) thanks, august ps. the service is defined as (names changed to protect the innocent): define service{ host_name mailhost service_description smtp relay check test is_volatile 0 check_command check_smtp_relay!/usr/local/nagios/.ssh/id_dsa!remoterelay.mydomain.com# max_check_attempts 3 normal_check_interval 2 retry_check_interval1 check_period24x7 notification_interval 240 notification_period 24x7 notification_optionsw,u,c,r contact_groups unix-admins } and the command is: define command{ command_namecheck_smtp_relay command_line$USER1$/smtpchecker.pl $HOSTADDRESS$ $ARG1$ $ARG2$ } - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Re: [Nagios-users] need help with my custom perl plugin
good thought on perms - i double checked and i'm running as nagios so all good there ... marcel i think you are right, my match condition is just wrong for some reason ... when i change the while loop to: while (SSH){ next if /^Trying/; next if /^Connected/; if ($_ =~ /Escape/) { print success $_; exit($ERRORS{'OK'}); } else { print Connect died at: $_; exit($ERRORS{'CRITICAL'}); } this works and nagios reports OK. but if i let it get to that last line, which is the 220 line, it won't match. i'm guessing this is something to do with how the while loop handles the last line of input and places it into $_ but i don't get why nagios doens't see it and command line works ... i'll keep trying and if anyone spots it please let me know! august On 9/5/07, Marcel Mitsuto Fucatu Sugano [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Comments inline: On Wed, 2007-09-05 at 08:48 +1000, August Simonelli wrote: but when all those conditions ARE met nagios always makes it right past if ($_ =~ /^220/) { print $_ this works; exit($ERRORS{'OK'}); and gives me print fell thru; exit($ERRORS{'WARNING'}); printing out $_ in the while loop has the expected 220 line ... [Nagios-users] Need help with check_http
The check_http plugin doesn't seem to be catching critical events and connection refused events: Localhost.cfg define service{ use local-service ; Name of service template to use host_name app3, app4, app5, app6, app7, app8, app9, app10, service_description CC_PIXEL check_command check_pixel } Commands.cfg # 'check_pixel' command definition define command{ command_namecheck_pixel command_line$USER1$/check_http -e OK -H virtual hostname -I $HOSTADDRESS$ -u test url} When apache is off, I get a Connection refused in the status information, but the nagios status for the defined service is OK When apache is up and the app server is down, I get HTTP CRITICAL - Invalid HTTP response received from host in the status information, but the nagios status for the defined service is OK When I run check_http from the command line manually, I can confirm that I'm receiving correct status information back and the expect string of OK isn't in the response. What am I missing? Re: [Nagios-users] Need help for Nagios configuration
hi, Nagios is capable of monitoring many things, your best option is to Read The Documentation. then review the existing plugins that are out there. (review the official plugins, and Nagios Exchange) Basically nagios can check anything you want as long as you get can print output and return the proper exit code. For windows I recomend NC_Net (since I made it) but there is also NS_CLient++, SNMP traps, NRPE and several other ways to check against a windows box. (once again check nagios Exchange) Good Luck, TOny (author of NC_Net) On 4/14/07, Mukta Sharma [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, I have installed and configured Nagios on my laptop which has Fedora as virtual machine and it is working fine. Nagios is all about monitoring services. If you have to ask others which services to monitor I would say these services do not need to be monitored because they are not important to you. If they were important you could name them to us. If it is for educational purposes one should study the manuals. [Nagios-users] Need help
Hi This is Mukta Sharma. I am masters student in GWU. I am doing Nagios installation and configuration during my Unix project. I am having one problem, after installing it. I followed all the steps written in the documentation to install Nagios. But after restarting my web server when i just want to verify if that changes working or not or i want to see the Nagios web interface, i entered the following path in to my web browser http://localhost/nagios/ . It asked me for the user name and password for Nagios Access at http://localhost. i have not entered any password, i just created the user as written in the documentation. So please anyone can tell me what i should do to resolve this problem. Thanks Mukta Sharma M.S Student The George Washington University - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. You'll need to complete that process. Take a look at your Apache configuration, and any files you have specified there that it should use for authentication. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Hi, I have read through most, if not all, of the 258 pages of the Nagios 2.0 documentation and have been running a Nagios install for about four months. At this point I am monitoring about 45 hosts and around 100 services. My question is about network objects. I understand that I explicitly define host and service objects. What I don't get is how a network object is defined or determined by Nagios. Is this just determined by creating parent-child relationships, or is there some other way in which an object is defined as a network object, and hence it's unavailability is reported as a network outage on the Tac and network outages screens? I am sorry if this a silly question, but I am just not getting this piece of the puzzle. Thanks in advance. [Nagios-users] Need help to determine what service to use

[Nagios-users] Need help with service failure recheck interval
Using nagios 2.0b3 and have the following host and related service defined: define host{ usevip.template host_name ProdSystem alias Prod hostgroups Production check_command check-dummy!0!See Service Detail for Status Information address172.16.1.10 } define service{ use vip.template host_name ProdSystem service_description test_client is_volatile 0 check_periodOff_Peak max_check_attempts 3 normal_check_interval 1500 retry_check_interval20 notification_interval 0 check_command test_client!111.111.111.111!!35 } test_client is a simple script that tests the connectivity of the custom service that at listening at 172.16.0.50. It is set to timeout and fail at 35 seconds. interval_length is set to 1, therefore normal_check_interval=1500 should be 1500s=25m and retry_check_interval=20 should be 20s. However last night test_client failed and gave initial notification of state CRITICAL at 00:37:21. Manually testing by me immediately after receiving this notification showed that the service was indeed back up therefore I am almost 100% certain that subsequent test_client checks by nagios would have succeeded. However, I did not receive an RECOVERY alert until 01:26:46, which is almost exactly 50 minutes after the initial CRITICAL alert. Also, I have another test for a similar service with identical parameters, and in that case it didn't send a RECOVERY alert until almost exactly 75 minutes after the CRITICAL alert. --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media. Have you checked nagios.log to verify that your assumptions about the check results in both cases are accurate? We'd need those and related entries to know what's really going on, else we're just speculating. If you're not seeing sufficient log entries, make sure you've enabled log_ options in nagios.cfg. You may also want to consider enabling debug options at compile time for additional logging. As noted in nagios.cfg, using an interval_length other than 60 isn't common and isn't thoroughly tested. I for one have not experienced notification issues such as this using many versions of Netsaint/Nagios. Also, you should be using the 2.0 release now to make sure you're not hitting a bug that's already been fixed. -- Marc --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media.
