[neonixie-l] Re: NE70V neon tubes
The interesting thing about the eBay listing is that it claims they are "Fully Tested". I asked the seller how that could be done without specifications. I haven't heard back yet. :) More picture from other angles would have been nice. I guess I sometimes buy a pig in a poke. [neonixie-l] Re: NE70V neon tubes
Thanks for the info. Now all I have to do is find my box of wire wound resistors. I haven't seen them since I moved here 20 years ago. Who knows, there might even be a wire wound rheostat hiding somewhere in my dungeon. And yes, I remember my guzintas. I actually had a pair of those in my hand, from the same source. The eBay seller is brokering them for a guy, who doesn't have an eBay account. Westdave knows both of them, and got a pair from the guy. Dave also had me test the pair that he had. They are most likely cathode poisoned. But probably not in a permanent way. Just run them for a while and it should clear up. I used a small portable test jig to run them. It can't deliver more than 15mA at 180V, so only a small portion lit up. When you get yours make a simple burn-in jig, using the household 110VAC and a power resistor. I'd start with an assumed sustained voltage of 70V (just a guess), and peak current of 20mA. 165V (peak value of 120Vrms) knock off 70V, gives you 95V. 95 goes-n-ta (see Beverly Hillbillys - Jethro & Advanced Math) .02Amps, 4750 times. So that's ~4.7K, and 95 times .020 (20mA) is ~2Wpeak; ~1Wrms. A 5W power resistor should do fine. See how much of the electrode surface lights up, and see if it grows after a few minutes. If not, make the resistance smaller. Cut it in half. Keep an eye on it. Don't do a 'Dr Conrad Murray' (see Michael Jackson), and ignore your patient. [neonixie-l] Re: Keeping your clock accurate
This is just way to much of a coincidence; I'm in Seattle to! I'm thinking to go with David Forbes idea. I hadn't realized that the crystals were accurately inaccurate. I'm thinking to have a BCD encoding dip switch that sets the number of forward or backwards seconds per day. Thank you all so much for your help and advice. Those are the ones. The word NEON is printed on the top of the tube. I'm hoping they're just large neon bulbs and that only two pins are used. I guess I'll find out when they arrive. Hi Larry, talking about this auction? Ebay # 160498913376 I saw them, too, but sadly I do not know what they are, either. The nomenclature NE suggests that they are some kind of neon bulb. I've just purchased a pair of Amperite NE70V neon tubes. The seller has no information on them and I've found nothing on the web. Re: [neonixie-l] Large tubes - advice needed for not getting swindled on ebay
Hi Adam, Even the IN-14 has risen in price dramatically. When I built my wife's clock 5 years ago, they were something like $1/each. Now they are something like $6/each. Actually they are about $4 each, but this is still very much, yes. [...] I continue to recommend the IN-12 for new designs, it has the same digit height as the IN-14 and is $1/tube. I wonder if the reason they are still cheap is because they are end-view tubes? Probably. Personally, I do like side view tubes much more. Another reason might be their base that requires a socket. Even the IN-14 has risen in price dramatically. When I built my wife's clock 5 years ago, they were something like $1/each. Now they are something like $6/each. She made me stockpile enough of the things to give her confidence that there will be replacement tubes for her clock for the rest of her life... and she's only 34, so that is a lot of tubes! Luckily, it's made it 5 years without needing new tubes, so maybe I don't need as many as I have But I'm still not allowed to get into her "stash" for new clock designs. :) I continue to recommend the IN-12 for new designs, it has the same digit height as the IN-14 and is $1/tube.
