I would not be opposed to that. The quarterly release proposal has not
formally been adopted, i.e., it's been proposed and we're going along with
it until we feel that maybe it's the wrong direction -- and three times a
year could be good too.

Re: NetCAT 10.0 evaluation

2018-10-30 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Hi Geertjan,

nice post-mortem summary. My rough comments:

1. The proposal represents very minimalistic version of NetCAT, which
however in the past used to be a platform with a defined start and end
dates, where people gathered around particular features, distributed
work, reviewed test specs for accuracy (updated old ones or created
brand new ones) and then started testing daily builds, discussed their
findings, filed issues, reviewed tutorials, participated in surveys.
Activity of individual participants was tracked and evaluated at the end
and best participants were rewarded for their activity and contribution
and then everyone had time to catch up with other things/projects/life
so from that point of view I can't predict if and how same people will
keep contributing in the long term.

2. I agree we need to invite volunteers and immediately start finding
tribe leaders and then utilize them. Not doing this for NetCAT 10.0 was
a big mistake. Typically these should be the best performers from
previous runs.

3. Identified blockers need constant attention. Testing stuff is only a
step A. Step B (fixing bugs) is equally if not more important.

4. Wasn't there a discussion about only 3 releases per calendar year?
This would lower the rush and increase quality IMO.

I don't know, I see there's a test spec for it but it's not included in
the test run. If you'd like to go through the spec anyway and report
your findings, that would be great.

I wasn't even aware that anyone had written a test spec for this (I
added an empty placeholder for it during the last NetCAT, as I recall).
Since that's part of a larger spec and someone is testing a different
part, it's closed for edits.

The sections still being tested are IDE profiling and Heapwalker, both
by Michal Owsiak. Michal, can you complete these tests to open the spec
for John's edits?

in and add your details to the table.

Create your account in Synergy NetBeans test case management system:

Yes, exactly, you will create a release branch on the 30th and the first
voting candidate on October 1. With that achieved, we’ll be in really good
shape to complete the release on schedule.

Re: [news] NetCAT 10.0 proposal

2018-09-25 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Agreed. Let's see how things go for this release. But we may need to focus
on 3 releases per year, potentially one or two of them synced with new
releases of the JDK, or else we must make this 2 months release process
shorter in future, somehow.

Re: [news] NetCAT 10.0 proposal

2018-09-25 Thread John McDonnell
My one concern with the timetable is that it looks like its under 2 months
to do a release (if all goes well) from the 24th September to 15 November.

While this is doable and I have no problems with Jiri's timeframe, it does
imo put a little strain on us if we are attempting to do quarterly
releases, as we'll need to be looking at kicking off NetBeans 11 (or 10.1
etc) come mid to late December (ignore Christmas for the moment).

Are we still happy to go with quarterly releases?

Regards

John

[news] NetCAT 10.0 proposal

2018-09-25 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Hello NetBeans community,

the November release of Apache NetBeans is quickly approaching so I
would like to propose a schedule for the NetCAT 10.0 program [1].
Release drivers for version 10.0 are JDK 11 features and PHP support.

[1]
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/NetCAT+10.0+Schedule

Please take a look at this plan and share any concerns you might
have. I am specifically interested in opinion of Laszlo Kishalmi - our
Apache NetBeans 10.0 release manager. If no major objections arise, I
will officially start NetCAT 10.0 program on Thursday - 9/27.

Thanks for your feedback (especially the positive one :)!

Best regards,
-Jirka
