Re: [newbie] Q: XMessageBox

1999-05-02 Thread Martin Barnard

Much thanks, it works perfectly :)

If you were wondering, I want to use it in one of my scripts, which cycle
through a range of dynamic ip's looking for my friend, who sometimes doesn't use
icq/shells it's difficult to get in touch with him.

Snippety snip
xmessage should do what you want. Use it as something like:

xmessage -buttons OK:1,Cancel:2 "This is my message."

The arguments after -buttons are the button labels to create and the exit code that
will be returned when the user hits that button.

RE: [newbie] RH 6 CD

1999-05-02 Thread Russ Westbrook

Hi Steve,

Since Mandrake uses Red Hat with some of their own additions and
people on this list were talking about KDE being offered on Red Hat 6
I figured they knew of a site that showed what was on it. Seemed
appropriate to me. I'm still wondering btw.

I
am specifically wondering if WordPerfect 8 is included on the CD.

How about asking on the appropriate mailing list? Mandrake != Red
Hat.

RE: [[newbie] RH 6 CD]

1999-05-02 Thread Russ Westbrook

Thank you,

I am looking to buy the newest release of Linux and I have settled on
either Caldera or Red Hat. Both of the programs you listed below I
would like to install. I knew Caldera had WordPerfect but I didn't
know about SO (interesting). I have tried several times to download
them but Netscape is next to useless for this task and I haven't quite
figured out how to use the ftp. I'm getting closer with each try. I
figure if I tinker long enough, odds are I should stumble onto the
correct procedure. However, if they are both on the CD, makes life
easier.

Thanks
Russ

I believe it is on there (or will be). It IS on Caldera 2.2, along
with Star
Office 5.0.

[newbie] Problems with GTK+

1999-05-02 Thread walter kalata

Numerous programs I have tried to compile have required GTK 1.2.2, so I
figured I might as well go ahead, and then my trouble began:

I started by uninstalling glib, gtk, and gtk-devel using RPM.

Then I downloaded the newest versions from http://gtk.org.

First, I installed glib, which seemed to go fine, no errors,

Then when configuring gtk, it said It couldn't find glib-config.,
so I ran
ln -s /usr/local/bin/glib-config /usr/bin/glib-config
and I got a whole new brand of error:

*** Could not run GLIB test program, checking why...
*** The test program compiled, but did not run. This usually means
*** that the run-time linker is not finding GLIB or finding the wrong
*** version of GLIB. If it is not finding GLIB, you'll need to set your
*** LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, or edit /etc/ld.so.conf to point
*** to the installed location Also, make sure you have run ldconfig if that
*** is required on your system
***
*** If you have an old version installed, it is best to remove it, although
*** you may also be able to get things to work by modifying LD_LIBRARY_PATH
***
*** If you have a RedHat 5.0 system, you should remove the GTK package that
*** came with the system with the command
***
***rpm --erase --nodeps gtk gtk-devel
configure: error:
*** GLIB 1.2.2 or better is required. The latest version of GLIB
*** is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org
[root@max1-8 gtk+-1.2.2]#

What is ldconfig, how do you edit /etc/ld.so.conf, and Where do I change
LD_LIBRARY_PATH??

tells the dynamic linker the configuration has chagned (i.e. new libraries
installed).

 how do you edit /etc/ld.so.conf

You open the file /etc/ld.so.conf in your favorite editor, make the
changes you want, and save it.
You want to add the line /usr/local/lib.

An easier way is to recompile glib and gtk with ./configure --prefix=/usr;
this will install the headers and libraries where the compiler and linker
look for them automatically.

 and Where do I change
 LD_LIBRARY_PATH??

That's an environment variable - do export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=something in a
"normal" shell, or setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH something in tcsh.

First delete or rename the XF86Config and XF86Config.sav then try using
XF86Setup. I kept running into the same problems! This corrected it.

Subject: Monitor/Configuration (second attempt)

 Hi,

I've installed Linux Mandrake 5.3 on my computer a few days ago. Before,
I had Red Hat Linux 5.1 installed and I managed to get X working.
Unfortunately, I don't get X (KDE) working right now. If I start X
('startx') my screen gets black and I have to reboot. If I try to start
KDE ('startkde') I get a message that 'I cannot connect to X' and a lot
 more.

I have tried most configuration-options (via xconfigurator) and I am out
of options right now. Can somebody help me here?

My display adapter is a Diamond Stealth 64 (765), S3 Trio 64V + PCF and
my monitor is a Targa 14'' NI, Model nr. TM 3610 PNL. I don't have the
manual anymore so while configurating I chose the safe options.

 Thanks!

 Misha

I just pre-ordered Mandrake 6.0 (based on RH 6.0) for $4.95 (+$4.00
shipping) from Circadian (http://www.ccsoft.cc/software/linux/6now.html).
If you check the Red Hat site (http://www.redhat.com), you'll see that the
basic version of Red Hat 6.0 is $74.95 (+shipping). I dunno, seems like an
obvious choice to me!

Hope this helps...

I'll just wait until I can download an ISO file of Mandrake 6.0, just like I
did with 5.3.Saves me time and money! (The joys of having a cable modem
at work!) You're suppose to already be able to download an ISO of Redhat
6.0 from Linuxberg.com. (If you can actually acces their FTP site! I've
been trying for THREE DAYS and it's always at it's max capacity.) :(

Arnold

You pre-ordered the GPL single cd version, not the
official 6.0 version.
