[newbie-it] Caricamento di applet java

2001-04-29 Thread Francesco Speranza

Ho notato navigando su mozzilla che su alcuni siti
come per es. http://www.gazzettaufficiale.it/homegu1.htmalcune
aree della pagina web non vengono caricate correttamente e compare un messaggio
tipo " caricamento di applet java. In queste zone dovrebbero comparire
delle scritte in movimento. La cosa non avviene in netscape. Ho gia'
caricato java2 re 1.3.0 e flash .
Cosa devo settare ancora? (

[newbie] Postfix not listening?

2001-04-29 Thread Marcio Cordero

Hi all,
after checking newgroups and the web with no significant answer, I post my
question here:
I tried to configure fetchmail with fetchmailconf and when I try fetchmail
-d0 -v -nosyslog, I get :
snip
reading message 1 of 33 (2224 octets)
fetchmail: timeout after 300 seconds waiting for listener to respond.
snip
I checked with netstat -an and I get (grep :25 ):
tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:25 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:25127.0.0.1:33780
ESTABLISHED
tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:33780 127.0.0.1:25
ESTABLISHED

I restarted postfix and it still didn't work. Is there anything I have to
change in postfix?
Any help is welcome.
Thanks, Marcio

RE: [newbie] rebuild src.rpms with athlon optimizations

2001-04-29 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

The existence of the Athlon directory is purely co-incidental.

The target command creates the directory you specify as it's parameter.

As I said RPM knows nothing about Athlon switches...

---

Thanks for repeating something that I already know as
if it's some kind of in-breaking of the divine word of
truth. That's really helpful.

As I said before I don't ask questions on the mdk list
until I have worn out all other areas of info. It is
a NEWBIE list after all. The only reason I ask there
is because I know that mdk people like todd and
civilme read the list and answer questions. Notice I
said answer questions not provide hints and clues as
if in a game show.

---

THE most annoying people are those that expect everything to be handed to
them on a silver platter... I.E. they do NOT RTFM.

A nudge in the right direction is what most intelligent people need. Not a
treatise on exactly what they are supposed to do, which is counter
productive for many reasons.

The BIG hint I provided should have led you to look up the command line
parameters for GCC Althon optimizations... all you had to do was in turn
pass that parameter via RPM to GCC thereby solving your problem.

If you didn't like my hint, you could have merely disregarded it...

2001-04-29 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

I'm amazed that this has caused you so much consternation.

As I mentioned, if you didn't like my suggestion, all you had to do was
disregard them, not complain.

The results of such indignation tends to cause the cognoscenti to shy away
from aiding others... a disservice to others seeking aid.

You make too many assumptions about what I know and
don't know and what I have and have not done already.
Once again, screw you and your bad attitude. Go away.

[newbie] sending control characterss to a printer ?

2001-04-29 Thread Renaud OLGIATI

I'm in the middle of writing a small gawk script that sends the content of a
text file to the printer, in character form, to fill in a printed form.

Query: is there a way, similar to Basic's LPRINT CHR$(27);CHR$(41), to send
control chars to the printer from gawk ?

I am trying to make a link to my windows desktop directory. The command I tried was

ln -d /mnt/(desktop directory)/ WinDesktop but it said cannot create hard link:
Invalid cross-device link. Also, would it be possible to make this link from the /
directory?

[newbie] LM8.0 - ksh error on login

2001-04-29 Thread Jason Jesso

Hi:

When using ksh as the shell for a user on Linux-Mandrake 8.0, the .profile
is not executed.

I also tried this:

$ su - test
Password:
[1] 1388
ksh: /etc/profile.d/mc.sh[12]: export: -f: unknown option
[1] + Done (1) export -f mc
$

where test is a user using ksh.

It looks to me that something in bash is not compatible with ksh.

Do you have the same problem? ksh users??

I submitted this as a bug to Mandrake but have not gotten a response yet.
Can anybody help? I need ksh.

Thanks
Jason

I had a similar problem using the same soundcard under Mandrake 7.2. The
This is Linux Torvalds ... message would try to play, but cut off in the
middle of the first syllable. Sometimes the .WAV file would play properly,
sometimes it wouldn't. The problem seems to be that sndconfig would select
settings that *almost* worked -- they should be valid, but probably
conflicted with some other hardware.

I found that if you tell sndconfig that everything is okay, then rerun
sndconfig (sometimes two or three times) eventually it would configure my
soundcard properly. Remember, do *not* tell sndconfig that the configuration
is wrong, just accept them -- and then run it again. Apparently sndconfig
looks at the previous settings and tries something different from its list of
acceptable settings.

Always log into a text session as root before running sndconfig, of course.

RE: [newbie] soundcard help

2001-04-29 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

There are probably modules already loaded in memory causing the error you
are seeing.

You need to first unload the memory resident modules...

Try

# lsmod

to list them.

Unload all sound related modules...

I.E.

# rmmod soundcore

etc. Make sure you get the MPU module(s) too. You need to remove them all
for soundconf to work properly.

If you are getting an error message while attempting to remove one, then it
is likely that you need to first remove a child module first, and try the
same one again.

Afterwards try running soundconfig again.
