RE: [newbie] Gnome, or KDE
Just my experience: I use the following programs in the same time usually: vmware (running win98), mplayer, xmms, krusader, openoffice The cpu load in KDE 2.2 is around 89%, in gnome 1.4 around 31%(or even less) The machine is a 1,2GHz celeron with 256MB RAM Guess which one I'll use from now on. Still I need a good solution that works pretty much like krusader and koncd... any ideas? Let me know ur comments :) This is my opinion and sound like the general consensus: KDE is the better manager, that is, has better integration and consistent interface and is more mature. Yet most of the better apps are GNOME/gtk based (Evolution, Pan, Galeon, GnuCash). Also KDE is more like MS Windows than GNOME. just one more comment on this. i still have not tried any beta of 9.0 ( i don't wanna ruin the surprise, so i'm waiting for the final release :o) ) GNOME has improved quite a bit. KDE is more windows-like so it more comfortable for windows user but GNOME has its appeal. You know the saying you have to develop a taste for it. but unless things have improved a LOT, a 'default' KDE installation will look somewhat 'dissapointing'. this is because it has no theme/style configured, nor does it have a modern icon set ( i'm talking about taste here, so you or others may think otherwise. this is just my opinion) So, write this down: www.kde-look.org after the install and all that, take your time and go to that site and make sure you make your Linux box pretty! hehehe :oP Oh I agree with you... it amazing what happens when people fool around with the settings. Both KDE and GNOME are well, dull, especially, when compared to the eye candy of XP and WindowBlinds for MS Windows. I guess it comes from the fact there are few graphic designers involved the creation of the distros and managers. As to themes KDE is way ahead of GNOME in this department. So my advice would be tinker... with KDE, remember to save your setup in the themes section because it can be a bitch to get it back if you change or loose those settings. Has anyone gotten the current Nvidia drivers from Nvidia's web site to work with ML9b4? I tried, but now Xwindows refuses to start. I followed the instructions in the README. [newbie] permissions hell
Hello, I'm running Mandrake 7.1 (I know I know, long story..) and I'm having what I think is a permissions problem. Its the cdrom and floppy drives, specificly unless I'm logged in as root I can't get to 'em. This is, a super pain. I want to be a good doobie and not play around with stuff while logged in as root, but if I want to move stuff between machines I need the floppy drive(No network yet, coming soon) So smarty that I am I pull out the books. Yes books. Then I edit /etc/group and make my user part of all the groups that look entertaining, disk, cdrom, floppy, users. Doesn't help a bit. Finally in a fit of desparation I add myself to root. Which also doesn't help a bit. Oh, I do log out between tries, but I presume theres some way around that, which I'd appreciate knowing So I'm stumped, I can mount and unmount but not use... [newbie] [Newbie] SNF ... again... NIC configuration
anyone got any place i can look for how to enable a NIC on an SNF box NOT on a network atm? My dilemma is that the NIC thats supposed to hook up to the DSL Modem isn't working. Rather, it works I believe, but SNF isn't configuring it. so my network currently is thus: CompA Switch CompB ---^ ^ DSL Modem --| I assume (perhaps wrongly) the firewall will need to have ONE NIC accessing that modem directly no? Thus: CompA Switch CompB ---^ ^ |SNF Firewall NIC-A These are connected| |SNF Firewall NIC-B DSL Modem Damn I hope the formatting stays when this is sent. heh hope that helps clarify what i mean. Anyway, NICB isn't functioning. No lights on the back nothing. Yet I believe its detected. As an aside, is there an easy way to tell which is NIC-A and which is -B? Lots of Questions, sorry. Re: [newbie] permissions hell
This is a multi-part message in MIME format... =_1030741952-3326-218 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Hello, I'm running Mandrake 7.1 (I know I know, long story..) and I'm having what I think is a permissions problem. What are the permissions on the /dev device entries (/dev/cdrom, etc)? That's usually a clue - if they are set incorrectly, then you won't be able to access them as a user. /dev/cdrom should be permissions 440 (i.e., as root, do chmod 440 /dev/ cdrom) - because the owner should be able to access the cdrom as well as the group (more on that later) but 'outsiders' i.e., the world, if you have any remote users - shouldn't have access to the 'raw' device. Now they *can* have access to the directory where the cdrom is mounted, and IIRC that doesn't necessarily mean they need read access to the device. Lots of setups do things differently, and I may not be quoting the party line here - but it's your system :). My rationale is based on having users that can have access to the device (other than root) such as a disk or audio group. That is why I set the group read permissions on. If you yourself as a user are added to that group, then you get to use the device. What complicates matters is that (I think) somehow the permissions are being reset - and further complications arise if you use auto-mounting deamons and the like. Personally, I just like the idea of mounting a new CD as root, and then letting the user use the mount point, rather than having direct access to the device. I need the floppy drive(No network yet, coming soon) So smarty that I am I pull out the books. Yes books. Then I edit /etc/group and make my user part of all the groups that look entertaining, disk, cdrom, floppy, users. I think you're on the right track. root:x:0:root bin:x:1:root,bin,daemon daemon:x:2:root,bin,daemon,ldap (snips) (here I only have one user, i.e., me, but this should be enough cdrom:x:22:dfox usb:x:43:dfox cdwriter:x:80:dfox audio:x:81:dfox users:x:100:dfox etc. Doesn't help a bit. Finally in a fit of desparation I add myself to root. Which also doesn't help a bit. That doesn't really help - but other unices have a 'wheel' but Linux doesn't really have it per se. It can no doubt be added, or even faked, if need be. So I'm stumped, I can mount and unmount but not use... HELP! OK - now what are the permissions on /mnt/cdrom? Remember it's not simply the permissions on the device - a user needs to be able to see the files, for instance in /mnt/cdrom. If that's not also accessible by the user, it won't make a difference if he's in the cdrom or the floppy group. -Curt Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
