[newbie] Installation Help for v7.1
Hi Gang: I'm trying to install Linux 7.1 on an old PC in my office, (128 M of RAM; don't remember how much hard drive space I have butI think it's at least 4G), but it keeps hanging at the point where it's supposed to be configuring the IDE. Any idea why this is happening? Is there a fix? HLP!!! Andre--- __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Re: [newbie] Installing v8.2
Whoops! My mistake. The PC is PentiumII (266 MHz; I ALWAYS get that confused). I'm checking sites to find a good download. Thank you, much, for your help. Dre---Do you Yahoo!? Faith Hill - Exclusive Performances, Videos, & more faith.yahoo.com
Re: [newbie] Installing v8.2
Ok. Here's what I'm doing. I go to the Linux-Mandrake site (www.linux-mandrake.com). I get to the download page which takes me to the FTP site and all I see are 6 files: alt0, alt1, alt2, advanced.msg, boot.msg, help.msg, isolinux.bin, isolinux.cfg Which one of these files contains the .iso that I should download to allow me to install Linux. Can someone please explain step-by-step what I'm supposed to do? Or at least give me the name of a site that explains step-by-step what to do? (That FAQ site has very minimal instructions; I need something that explains what to do, as if I was a 5 year old.) Dre---Do you Yahoo!? [newbie] Installing v8.2
Ok. So I downloaded v8.2 by double clicking on the download files from the FTP site and then burning them onto a CD, but it's still not installing on the computer I want to use. Can someone PLEASE tell me in PLAIN LANGUAGE how to install Linux using the file "MandrakeLinux-8.2-CD1.ppc.iso" (this is what was burned onto the CD). If this is NOT the correct way to burn the CD, can someone PLEASE explain (again in PLAIN LANGUAGE) how to: 1. copy the file from the FTP site 2. burn it onto a CD Thank you. Dre---Do you Yahoo!? Re: [newbie] Installing v8.2
Additional information: I'm trying to install this on a WindowsNT PC (and I want to totally blow away Windows, here). I only downloaded CD1 and CD2 (there was a thrid file with the extension .ppc, but I didn't think I'd need this). Please help... Dre---Do you Yahoo!? [newbie] Now That I've D/L'd Linux 9.0...
How do I install v9.0 on a PC that has WindowsNT on it. I want to blow away the current NT OS. Also I'm not sure I downloaded the file correctly (everytime I tried to log onto the FTP site I got a screen asking for a username and password; I gave a username and used the "log in as anonymous user" selection); when I was able to connect to a site, I copyed the ISO files and burned them to a CD. Can I use this CD to boot from or did I have to expand the files first? HEELP! Dre---Do you Yahoo!? New DSL Internet Access from SBC & Yahoo!

Derek: I just did a copy/paste. Was this the correct way to copy the files? Dre--Do you Yahoo!? New DSL Internet Access from SBC & Yahoo!

Re: [newbie] Setting Up Modems, Printers, and a Home Network
Hi Derek! Thank you for the reference. I'll check it out as soon as I get soem free time. With reference to the Samba networking, will it allow me to connect my Winodze computers to my Linux computer? Or is it specifically designed for UNIX based systems? Thanx again for your help! [newbie] Setting Up Modems, Printers, and a Home Network
Are there any sites that explain how to set up internal modems andprinters for Linux? Also, I'd like to set up a home network and put my Linux computer on it. I currently have Mac, Win98, WinME. They're not networked yet (I'm a real novice), and I need some information about how to go about setting this up. My Linux version is currently 7.1, and I do plan to upgrade to 8.2. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Dre---Do you Yahoo!? New DSL Internet Access from SBC & Yahoo!
[newbie] Speaking of Laptops
I installed Mandrake Linux on my Windoze laptop as a dual boot, a while ago, but it didn't work properly. I haven't had a chance to investigate how to remove it, but I thought I'd ask the group here. Does anyone know how to uninstall Mandrake from a Windoze laptop without hosing the entire system? Tanx. Andre---Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes

Re: [newbie] Command Line Print?
Hi Miark: I'm trying to issue the following UNIX command: x=$(print $(somevariable%.c)). What this does is saves the value of the command "print $(somevariable%.c) into x, after stripping ".c" from the right side of the variable. I can then use the variable x for other commands. Any ideas how to do this Linux? Andre---Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes

Re: [newbie] Upgrading from 7.1 to 8.2
Ok. Thank you Gavin. Now another question: how do we do a "fresh" install? What files (or directories) should I delete? Should I format the hard drive and start from scratch (if so how would I retain my home directory as you suggest)? AndreDo You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes
