RE: [newbie] resizing partitions mishap
sorry, jumping in late... can you boot from your mandrake CD, then update your system. that should allow you to repartition and reformat you partitions. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Dennis Myers Sent: Monday, March 04, 2002 5:56 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] resizing partitions mishap On Monday 04 March 2002 13:44, you wrote: Jeff, when you set up the partition did you format it? there is a button on the gui to format. If you didn't it won't see the partition as usable. HTH Actually, I did think of that afterwards. So that would be the problem with the swap, maybe not the new partition though. I think I may have formated it. In either case is there anyway to jump in and stop Linux from mounting them so I can format them? Thanks Jeff Oh man, I have not figured that out, someone with more wizdom than I needs to jump in here. I think it starts with using the first CD and hitting F1 at the splash screen and getting into rescue mode but after that I'm not sure what to do. RE: [newbie] mount ntfs partition in read/write mode
I don't know if I know the exact answer to this, but I can help triangulate for you. NTFS support is very iffy to say the least. I don't know if you have to recompile the drake kernel or not (it looks like you do), but the last time I compiled one (different distro) there was an option to include EXPERIMENTAL support for r/w NTFS, so I know you can do it if you relly want to. I have a similar setup, and want to share files back forth between Linux/Windoze, so I set up a data partition (VFAT) which I did make r/w. I prefer to leave my main windows partition unmounted and unavailable because I am paranoid about messing things up. Hope that helps. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of paolo brusasco Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 4:21 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] mount ntfs partition in read/write mode hallo everyone. I have a (lot of) question(s) about ntfs. my system has a ntfs partition crated installing win2000 professional I can mount only in read mode. fstab entry is /dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000 ntfs umask=0 0 0 I have also tried with /dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000 ntfs umask=0,rw 0 0 and then as root i have issued the commands umount /dev/hdb5 mount -t ntfs -o umask=0,rw /dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000 with the result of full read and execute permission, write for none or mount -t ntfs -o rw /dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000 with the result of read, execute only for root (obvious), write for none I looked in archives and found things like ...ntfs support is sperimental... and ...write may be dangerous...; It may also seem that a full support needs recompiling the kernel (in this case, I am not ashamed to say that I am too old for these jokes and I will wait for further relases...) Or, it may also seem there should be an upgrade ?ntfsfix? buthow can I know which version of the ntfs access system I have an how can Ifind an upgrade? apart from any considerations on the effective risks (that would be intersting, I mean: what exactly happened to some courageous???), if the danger is moderate I could afford the risk-my few data are almost all migrated to lin part; however win2000 part is still useful for driving a matrox 450 etv card (looking for a driver in linux), using nero 5.5 and sharing some music. thanks everyone. paolo brusasco. _ Do You Yahoo!? RE: [newbie] Lilo Problem
sounds to me like you installed lilo outside the MBR. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Kaj Haulrich Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 2:18 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Lilo Problem Rich wrote: I had already tried the Boot Config and Boot Loader, anything that I do there is ignored. I'm not sure that I understand the second part of your answer. Where exactly do I put those statements? In the boot loader? Rich Kaj Haulrich wrote: Rich wrote: I just installed a second copy of Mandrake 8.1 on some extra space I had on a second hard drive. The problem is that lilo is now completely ignored on boot, the latest install is booted every time, lilo never shows up at all. What do I have to modify to get lilo to show up? Rich, two suggestions : If you run KDE or GNOME, open Control Center, type in your root-password, and select Boot. Then, select Boot Config. Now, in the upper right corner, click Configure. This opens a dialog-box, called Bootloader Main Options. Here, you can select the boot device. I guess you can choose whatever here. If still in trouble, post two files to the list : 1. : /etc/lilo.conf 2. : /etc/fstab Then, I'm sure you'll be up and running in no time at all. HTH Kaj Haulrich Rich, what I mean is that in order to help you, simply post a new message to the list with information on those two files. You can open them in a text-editor, copy the text and paste it into your mail. That way, I'm sure we can help you out. Likewise, it would be nice to know where your hard-disks are located on the IDE-bus, i.e. first/second and master/slave. For your information, the scheme usually is as follows : hda = master on first IDE-bus (normally the first harddisk, with partitions hda1, hda2, hda3 and so on.) hdb = slave on first IDE-bus (I guess that's your second harddisk, with partitions hdb1, hdb2..) hdc = master on second IDE-bus (normally a CD-drive) hdd = slave on second IDE-bus (sometimes a CD-Writer). If you have the guts to experiment with editing those files, remember to make a boot-floppy first ! And finally : after editing lilo.conf (as root), don't forget to run lilo (just type : lilo). If still in trouble, get back to the list. Kaj Haulrich _ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
