Re: [newbie] no available partitions

You could fdisk the partition and leave it as free space. You should then be
able to install linux on the free space. *i think*

I am trying to install mandrake 7.02 on a old P133.
The install hangs when it comes to the partitioning sectiona nd says that
"it can find no available partitions", I know this is false, I have 1 GB
partition with nothing on it. Is there a certain format the partition
should be in for the install to recognize it??

[newbie] zip in dos help

2000-03-16 Thread Bill Kinsey

Hello all;
I have a question involving a zip drive and dos. My friend tried linux and
came to the conclusion that he didn't like it. He used the dreaded fdisk and
erased his whole hard drive. He has windows but its on a zip disk and he
doesn't know how to install a zip in dos. I know this isn't a linux question
but i'd greatly appreciate some help.

Tried that too. I don't know what kind of cd-rom he has but my win95 and
win98 disks don't offer support for his cd-rom. He has a really old computer
thats been upgraded throughout the years but his cd-rom is one of the
original parts

[newbie] some minor help

2000-03-14 Thread bill kinsey

I'd first like to thank all the gurus and helpful people who helped me get this
far. I'm writing my first email on my freshly set up mandrake box and I have to
say that i'm on my way to telling winblowz to kiss my a$$. I have a couple of
minor bugs to work out though. The first question is: Is linux capable of
running multiple mice. I use a ps/2 trackball and a touchpad on seriel port 1.
Right now i'm only able to work one at a time. The second is: Does linux have
any features that resemble the micro$oft accessability tools like sticky keys
or toggle sounds? I'm asking because my next task is to intigrate linux on a
schoo intranet and there are students that require these devices to
successfully type.. The third question is how can I change my login from the
standard type to the graphical interface. I know it involves changing something
from 3 to 5 but i'm not sure what. Thanks in Advance

Re: [newbie] Localhost login

2000-03-08 Thread Bill Kinsey

This happened to me the first time I installed linux. The only way I got
around it was to reinstall linux. You will be prompted at the X setup if you
want a graphical startup. Choose yes and you will be able to log on through
a GUI interface. From that point you will be able to use gnome, kde, window
maker, ect.

Re: [newbie] Disableing PNP IN BIOS

2000-03-08 Thread Bill Kinsey

I know I had to push f2 on my win95 machine. Try holding down the delete key
as soon as your machine boots. If it loads completely, restart and hold down
f2. You might also want to read the booklet included with your machine

I now know how to enter bios even though there is no prompt but I could
not find this PnP setting everbody is talking about. Where is it?

 Please share

 Matt

Hey Matt PNP OS stands for PLUG AND PLAY OPERATING SYSTEM. To get into your
bios just watch real carefully when you turn your computer on. It will say
something like press Delete to enter setup. When it says that press and hold
the! delete key until it opens up. One last thing it might not be delete.
Delete is just the most common it might be a differnt key so just watch when
it boots up

[newbie] what partitions should I have?

What partitions should I have when installing mandrake? I have a 251 mb swap
and a 1300 mb / but how should it be set up?

Re: [newbie] sndconfig problems

2000-03-07 Thread Bill Kinsey

Hello all;
Well, I finally solved the problem of my sound card not being detected.
Having turned off the pnp in the bios and running grep -r *sound blaster*
(not really knowing what the hell I was doing) I removed my modem and would
you believe that soundconfig immediately detected my SB16 card. I'm not
saying that this case would solve all problems but it deffinately worked for
me. After I configured my sound I reinstalled my modem and found out (much
to my surprise) that I had a crappy winmodem. Well, i'm off to try to find
an external modem at a reasonable price.

[newbie] question for the experts

[newbie] sndconfig problems

2000-03-05 Thread Bill Kinsey

I finally got mandrake installed and everything seems ok except now I'm
having minor hardware problems. I ran sndconfig to try to configure my
SoundBlaster 16 but it detected my AZT PnP modem instead of the SB card. It
then desplays the following error:

/lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/sgalaxy. o: init_module: device resource busy.

[newbie] Modem and sound problems

2000-03-04 Thread Bill Kinsey

To the linux gurus:
I installed mandrake and was able to
create the 20mb boot partition below the 1024 cylander ( thanks Michael
Scottaline for the advice) but I have problems onceMDK gets started. I get
error messages when I run sndconfig and kppp. Kppp tells me that my aztec pnp
modem on com3 is busy. I have the proper DNS info and Redhat never had a problem
finding my modem. When I try to run sndconfig, it displays the following
message: Error in modprone Call /lib /modules/2.2.14-15 mdk/misc/lib o:
init_module: Device or Resource busy. Sound Device or resource busy. I
am also stuck in tying to configure my serial touchpad on my serial 1 port. Can
someone please provide some insight on how to solve these minor
setbacks.
