[newbie] 3COM EtherLink 10/100 PCI TX (3C905B-TX) problems

2000-03-05 Thread Bryan Foster

Hello-

I have installed Mandrake-Linux 7.02 (AIR) and can not seem to get my NIC
card to work. When I tried to set up the networking stuff my card was not
listed. I tried with another and it didn't work. Finally I went to 3COMs web
site and downloaded the correct drivers for my card. (I wont even tell you
what I had to do to get it uncompressed.. needless to say I did manage to
get it uncompressed and the contents into a temp directory on my desktop).

Following the install instructions that came with the drivers I opened the
terminal as root, changed to the directory with the drivers and typed in the
following from the instructions:

# ./install3c90x

What I get is the following error:

'nknown option: `-
USAGE: csh [ -bcdefilmnqstvVxX ] [argument... ]

I have no idea what that means or what I am supposed to do to get these
drivers installed. Any ideas out there? I'd really like to get this card
working so that I can access the internet via my cable modem from Linux.
That would make learning this stuff a lot easier since I wouldn't need to
try something, write down whatever didn't work, log back into Windows, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Bryan

That is not true. Lucent Technology winmodems CAN be made to work under
Linux. I have one and I got it to run correctly.

RE: [newbie] Here is the dumbest question ever asked!

2000-02-26 Thread Bryan Foster

Thanks for info all... The problem was I didn't have an option to shutdown
or restart after logging out of X.. it just took me to a screen with only
the option of logging back in.

I reinstalled everything.. actually I didn't like the way I did the
original partition so that was the reason for redoing it and this time it
installed KDE as my default manager. Last time it was using something else
and that's why I didn't have the choices mentioned above. Everything looks
and worked much better now.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get the following items
working? I'm not looking for step by step (though that would be nice), but
where can I find the info I'm looking for.

Modem isn't recognized - 56K USR internal voice/fax modem. Linux says it's
busy when I try to set it up.

2-way Cable modem for MediaOne service (constant on) - Everything I've read
wants me to enter all sorts of info about the hostname, etc. Problem is
there is nothing like that in my Windows settings. Everything is blank in
Win98's TCP/IP settings for the NIC. The NIC is a 3COM EtherLink 10/100 PCI
TX (3C905B-TX)

Printer doesn't work - I have a Lexmark 3200 inkjet printer. I chose the HP
500C in the setup per the Lexmark instructions, but it doesn't print.

That's as far as I've gotten so far. I think if I could get those babies to
work (especially the cable modem) I could learn a bit easier by being able
to access the internet info from within Linux, instead of logging back into
Windows, reading some info or printing it out and then going back to the
Linux system.

Thanks for the help so far!

I have looked at a few different FTP sites and I can't seem to find a site
that has 7.02 clearly marked for d/l?
Is there a site at Linux-Mandrake or somewhere else with the 7.02
 version for
d/l? I have a cable modem and want to try 7.02.

[newbie] Here is the dumbest question ever asked!

2000-02-25 Thread Bryan Foster

I can call this the dumbest question ever because it is and it's mine.

What command do you use to logoff and shutdown the system? I have it set to
load X at startup and I can choose logoff, but that just puts me at the X
login screen again. I have just been hitting the reset button to reboot, but
Linux yells at me the next time I boot it up.

Thanks.. this is really the least of my concerns/questions at the moment,
but I'll save the other ones for later when I've learned a bit more.

[newbie] If you want to UNSUBSCRIBE follow these simple directions!

2000-02-22 Thread Bryan Foster

Instead of sending an email to the entire group with "unsubscribe" in the
subject and/or body of your message, follow these simple instructions. Not
only will it keep you from annoying everyone on the mailing list, but it
will actually unsubscribe you from the list.

Step 1) Head on over to the following URL:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3

Step 2) Scroll down to where it asks for your email address and type it in.

Step 3) Choose your language.

Step 4) Click on the appropriate mailing list radio button (in this case
choose newbie).

Step 5)Click the "unsubscribe" radio button.

Step 6) Click on the submit button.

There you go all done!

[newbie] Installing from hard drive using lnx4win

2000-02-19 Thread Bryan Foster

Hello all-

Here is what I am trying to do, without much success. I am hoping
Someone can tell me how to do it correctly or tell me it cant be done at
all.

I have 2 physical hard drives and I would like to install Linux on my D
drive using lnx4win, keeping Windows and all of it's components on my other
hard drive which consists of C,E,F and G partitions. Once I become more
familiar with Linux I will most likely decide to repartition and go with the
more normal install, but right now I'd like to take the path of least
resistance.

At any rate... I have downloaded the complete 7.0 directory via FTP and
then try to run install.bat from the lnx4win directory. When it asks for my
CD drive I have been putting the drive letter where I downloaded the 7.0
directory. It doesn't like this. I have tried doing it from the D drive,
where I want to install and I have tried moving the installation to another
drive and starting it there. Each time no go. It tells me to insert the
correct CD. I have also tried running the setup program in the lnx4win
directory after this and I do get the initial screen, but it will not
continue with the install.

Can I install Linux using lnx4win from the hard drive and can I place it on
a drive other than my primary boot drive? If so how?

Thank in advance for any advice, please let me know if you need any
additional information.
