[newbie] Compiling chkroot

2003-02-08 Thread Dan Cox
I'm having problems compiling chkrootkit. When I try and make I get the
following errors:

gcc -static -o strings strings.c
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lc
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [strings] Error 1

I ran into the same problem a while back trying to compile an older
version, however I can't figure out what I did to resolve the problem.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

[newbie] Install fails

2002-12-07 Thread Dan Cox

I'm receiving the following error while trying to install Mandrake 9.0.

error in exec of stage2 :-(
trying to execute '/usr/bin/runinstall2' from
the installation volume,
the following fatal error occurred
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE1: Not a directory

I can't recover from this.
You may reboot your system

This happens almost immediately after I hot enter at the Press enter to
install Mandrake screen.I've tried using different disks thinking maybe
the disk was scratched and also tried a text install with the same
results.Any help is appreciated.

[newbie] two network questions

2002-11-10 Thread Dan Cox
I've been receiving the below message and I have no idea what it means.

martian source 192.168.0.255 from 192.168.0.1, on dev eth0
ll header: ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:00:03:47:95:34:2e:08:00

There is a message like this for almost every ip I have on my network.
192.168.0.1 is my gateway running win2k. I'm also receiving:

martian source 192.168.0.255 from 192.168.0.3, on dev eth1
ll header: ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:00:04:5a:4b:2d:09:08:00

Which is the hosts IP. Anybody know what this is?

Also on another box when the computer is booted I can't ping other
hosts. I get the message:

From 192.168.0.10 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable

ifconfig shows the interface is up, but when I ifconfig down/up I can
ping hosts successfully. Any help is appreciated

Now when I ifconfig down/up I still get the destination host
unreachable. All cables are plugged in and working.

[newbie] auto logout

2002-08-18 Thread Dan Cox

Is there a way to auto logout inactive users? I have seen something
about TMOUT variable, but when I set it in /etc/profile and login at
console I get bash: TMOUT read only or something similar. So my
question is how do I get TMOUT to work? Also does TMOUT work for users
who are using X, gnome, kde, ect.? If not how could I set an auto logout
for those applications? Thanks for all the help.

[newbie] file system

2002-06-23 Thread Dan Cox

I'm curios about the different file systems available to linux.
Specifically are there certain file systems that are better for nfs
partitions or other types of servers. What are the advantages of and/or
disadvantages of xfs, ext3, etc. Any comments and links are greatly
appreciated.
