Re: [newbie] Visual Basic 6 for Linux?!?!
hmm i've been wondering about too... there are some other nice languages (with lots of documentation) out there that are fairly easy to program in and you can make GUIs. right now im learning python. I realize that this question might be "anathema" for all Microsoft haters out there. But being I newbie - I get to ask it anyway: is there a way to program for Linux using Visual Basic 6? Or is there a VB6-"like" integrated development environment for Linux? If not - what is the closest thing? How can a VB programmer apply his skills in the Linux world? Thanks!
Re: [newbie] System Commander 2000 and partitioning
u.. repartitioning a drive is a logical thing... as opposed to physical. the only physical thing you're doing is remagnitizing the platters. so to answer your question you won't have to disconnect the drives. - Original Message - From: "Romanator" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, March 19, 2001 7:57 PM Subject: [newbie] System Commander 2000 and partitioning Well, I finally purchased System Commander 2000. Or, should I disconnect them and repartition them individually with System Commander and then reconnect them? I would like to devote an entire drive to Linux MDK7.2 and the other to Windows. RE: [newbie] burning linux mandrake 7.2
You can't put 'Windows permissions' on a cd. CDs use an ISO standard. I don't know much about cd burning but that is what i know. Actually what i've done was download all the mandrake rpms from an ftp, stick them on a *windows* partition, booted the install using the harddrive image, and i was all set to go. -Original Message- From: dan.burrows [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2001 3:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] burning linux mandrake 7.2 hi all this is my first post and probably a silly question but i need help... so be nice now. i have managed to get my house mate who is connecting to the net via a cable modem to download the mandrake 7.2 iso file for me. now i am unsure of the bruners specs or model (as it is not mine) but apperntly it does not support RAW burning? we tryed to use nero (dont know which version is not mine again) to burn it to cd but it doesnt recognise the file type. we have found an iso buster program from the net and it seems to break it down in to the individual files. but after talking to a hard core red hat guy ho sometimes passes me in the office he thinks that it may alter the file permissions to windows ones therefor making them useless?? how do i get these images to disk? and before anyone says buy a copy i may do but i feel it A: defets the point of having a free operating system if you are paying for it. B: i am not callenged by it and C: learning more about linux and windows relationships. thanks for any help any of you can give dan

I really would like to use the vmware or whatever it's called but don't know where to start. i need a real idiots guide to downloading/installing, etc taking me right from switching on my pc to ?switching it off! I'm pretty much a whizz on '98 / win2k, etc but Linux is killing me. I was born and raised of DOS3.21 and i'm really struggling. help! I started way back when with MSDOS 2.0; glad to meet ya! :-) Wine doesn't like handle O2K. Wine is more for installing specific applications. What you want is a full OS emulation. You can try using Win4Lin (http://www.win4lin.com). Realize that this is not exactly a true newbie exercise, but you should be able to get thru it. Win4Lin is limited to only running Win9x, not ANY OS like VMWare is. It's also easier and cheaper. (VMWare is industrial strength hardware emulation, so you can install any OS into it's virtual machine) I have installed a full copy of Win98 using Win4Lin (you must have a legal copy of a Win98 CD to use, or the program doesn't even install). and I have installed O2K Pro into this Win98 install. Worked fine. I had to recompile my kernel, to add in support for running Windows under Linux. You might be able to use the RPMs available from the web site to do this step; I couldn't, because I had already upgraded my kernel to v2.2.18 - and the RPMS are for stock Mandrake 7.2, kernel versions 2.2.17. Wasn't hard, tho - you just need to (mostly) follow the step-by-step instructions for re-compiling a kernel. Then install Win4Lin. It - literally - is a full Win98 install, running in a window on a Linux desktop. I'm doing this on a P3-550, 384M RAM. No performance problems. p.s, while i'm on the subject. what's the best e-mail client currently. i'm after something similar to oe5 but without the vb / java script support crap! I like Evolution, from the Ximian (foremerly Helix Gnome) folks; very Outlook like. Also, KMail under KDE is quite nice. -- -- Michael J. Re: [newbie] compiling for windows
Possibly, if you could emulate the compiler (using Wine or something). Natively compiling it in Linux? Hell no, better write your own. However, if you would like to port a Linux app to Windows, you could try using DJGPP -- a dos implementation of the gnu compile tools. If it's just a console app you can probably compile with no problems (it even fakes a lot of Linux services). If the specific app has a GUI, you'll need to do a lot of modifying (and get the library for Windows apps -- I can't recall its name). Don't ask me how to do that, I only know ansi C++. Just my 2 cents. - Original Message - From: "adam" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2001 11:41 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] compiling for windows n... - Original Message - From: Carlos Berardi [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 16, 2001 4:13 PM Subject: [newbie] compiling for windows is there a way to compile an application under linux, for running it in MSWindows? Re: [newbie] the downloaded targz file via windowME can not be read by linux(LM7.2), need hel
Are you saying you can't access the cdrw, or that you can'tuse the file? If you can't use the file, it's likely that some sort of text file got in DOS format instead of Linux. (Dos text and Linux/Unix text are different) Look around for an option in tar that can convert text files Somebody can probably explain this better. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2001 10:08 PM Subject: [newbie] the downloaded targz file via windowME can not be read by linux(LM7.2), need hel Dear LM7.2 user: I download a driver of my conexant softmodem to cdrw on windowME via aol, but Lm7.2 can not read it, it complaint input/output error I tried mount -t vfat /dev/cdrom /mnt it is not work too.
