[newbie] New Kernel installation.
Hi all, i'm new to this list (I usually use the expert) because i think this Q doesn't qualify for the expert list. I have a laptop (doesn't have a brand, is assembled in a place here in Chile) that has ACPI support, but when i recompile the kernel with acpi support (i have 2.6.3-7mdk-i686-up-4GB) it doesnt work. (gives me the following line: No ACPI support in kernel, or incorrect acpi_path (/proc/acpi). So i want to know where can i download a kernel that is for mandrake, like, is there a place for downloading the kernel 2.6.11mdk (or something like that), the newest version, so i can use the WIFI also. Hope you can give me some directions Salu2 Gonzalo Avaria Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Re: Open Source (was Re: [newbie] Recommended office suites? Now OT)
Maybe we don´t need enormous software companies to do the job, just idealistic men like the ones moving the opensource world. And if someone offers free houses (and better than the one i'm paying for) wouldn`t you move?? Gonzalo From: Doug Lerner [EMAIL PROTECTED] If software were free how could the employees of the software company be paid to begin with? I'm sorry, but by this logic you could say, Instead of spending all that money on a down payment and mortgage, think of all the money I could save by just moving into the first house I see. doug Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Re: Open Source (was Recommended office suites? Now OT)
I don't know where the open source market is predicated on, but the global concept behind it brought a fresh and cleaner way of doing things not seen too much often since times of consumism, propietary and ownership take over us a few centuries ago ruling our lifes. Yes , it's beatufull but lets just dare to think it's MORE than theory From: David Reynolds [EMAIL PROTECTED] It seems to me the entire 'open source' software market is predicated on the free-time meanderings of people who already make enough money doing whatever it is they do in their chosen field, be it SysOp, Flipping burgers, or working in a Steel Mill. That amount of 'leisure time' is only possible when you already have the income to allow you that freedom. Saying that the world can function without a source of income is not going to serve you in the long run, although the anti-establishment angst right now is fueling plenty of coders to try to change things. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful THEORY. I just don't think its sustainable in the long term. The last two decades of computer programming have really been halcyon days, comparatively speaking. Re: [newbie] Software Manager
He says that he can't add new sources to install rpm packages throw software manager, not even a floppy or other folder. Gracias Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Re: Mouse Scrolling Distance
For 1024x768, put vga=791 For 1280x1024, put vga=794 in lilo.conf solo, you say 'console (not x)' is set to 1280x1024. just how did you get this setting? i was of impression that console was 25 lines by 80 coloums. i have a 19 adi monitor that i would like to get 1280x1024 on in console mode. mouse does not work, but i have no need for mouse in console mode. while under x and kde, i use 1280x1024, which is great when working in xterm. would be nice to have that size of screen in console mode for when i am in init level 1 and 3. tia. Re: [newbie] Machine hangs in X
I have the opposite problem: when in console mode, I don't know how to switch to X Anybody to help me? Is this a very stupid question? If so, please excuse me :-) Thanks Gonzalo H CB wrote: Alan Rolfe wrote: Could anybody tell me why my machine hangs when i try and run X Quick test. If you hit Ctrl-Alt-F1, does it go back to the text screen? If so, then press Ctrl-F7 and see if it pops up with something that looks like a desktop. I've seen numerous cases with machines that get their address via dhcp that X appears to hang. It's actually running, but something network related causes it to delay the display. This is a shot in the dark though. -- Blue skies...
